I noticed today that when I watched an HD clip on youtube using wifi that is is 720p but not when on a mobile network. Yes it's full screen and says HQ but it's not 720p.
How do I fix this or is this a limitation put on by Samsung?
I'm having difficult time believing that the stream is 720p even on wifi, how did you verify it?

Just watch a clip (1080p HD trailer or something) on wifi that is insanely sharp and you'll know it's 720p. There should be no pixelation at all.
Watch the same video on the mobile network and you'll notice the difference.
You have to activate it in Settings, its off by default to save people!

Even if you activate High Quality for mobile in the settings, it's still not as sharp as wifi.
It's true, it looks upscaled. High quality on mobile data is lower quality then on wifi.

It's normal, the speed is not the same..

ZOMG I didn't even know it was possibible to do 720p from the YT app! This phone is just getting cooler and COOLER!!
... back to thread.
There is a HD icon on the bottom left of the screen when the video is playing. Just hit that....but watch out if you're on AT&T!
Ok I don't think people are understanding so let me clarify:
- When on wifi, HQ youtube videos are sharp like they should be
- When on mobile internet, the SAME video with HQ on Mobile turned on is not as sharp
- Even while on mobile and having HQ turned on in the settings menu and the HQ button is lit up on the bottom left; pressing it makes the video go to a non-full screen blob
Why doesn't it load the real video if on mobile internet? I can wait a little bit longer for it load if it means sharp videos how they're meant to be viewed on my screen.
Wasn't there someone talking about how the Netflix on the new razr has actual non-wifi HD youtube? I noticed this problem the day I got the phone as well.
.
Yeah, I hope they fix this.
Do you have the latest version of YouTube? As was said before it should say HD not HQ. I just watched a video on mobile and it was definitely HD! Go to the market and see if there is an update for your YouTube app.

Not only that, but because this is a buttonless device, watching videos just looks stunning. Specifically with the youtube app over wifi, 720p only. It just blows me away how good it looks.
I know its not quite as convenient but 720p flash video plays flawlessly in the browser. I even sent it to my 19" with a mhl/dvi cable and it blew me away. For a mobile to be able to play that kind of quality video that smoothly is really impressive imo.

it does, to which my Galaxy S2 using mother said WOW when she watched one.
In the YouTube app I had to go into the settings and check use HD video. After that the videos looked a lot better.

Do you mean the 'High quality on mobile' setting in the General section? That just defaults the playback to HD when not connected through wifi. HD streaming on youtube can consume quite a bit of data if you are on a mobile network thats why its set by default to low def in the settings.
Mark.
Thanks for the answers guys - as an avoid YouTube watcher, I am excited for the 720p vids!

As mentioned if you enable 'High quality on mobile' in the general settings then you 'should' be able to watch 720p streams over 3g but it will consume alot of data.
Mark.
For some odd reason, my YouTube app seems to be playing the wrong video all the time on Wi-Fi. Perhaps something to do with my ISP?
I can only watch HD videos when on wifi. HD dosent work over 3G any fix?

This does not work on my phone.
I have unlimited data on Three so I dont care about my Data Consumption however videos still play at something around 360p even with HQ on and the options ticked in the settings.
I have the same issue. HD over mobile checked in youtube, but still can't view videos in 720p. Any one got a solution?
I hooked my Galaxy Nexus up to my 50" plasma, and Youtube looked great on there. Netflix looked horrible.
I unrooted and went back to the stock 4.0.2 and videos are still not showing up in 720p while on 3g. The reason I tried that was because I vaguely remember that it worked when I first got my galaxy nexus. Anyway, going to go back to 4.0.1 and see if that helps.

Thanks. You're probably right. It's just that using the youtube desktop site with the browser, I have no problem viewing/buffering any 720p on my 3g network. If only you can force the resolution manually in the youtube app.
Hello
I uploaded 1080p and 720p videos taken with my Note 2 on Youtube. But then the quality is very bad when im watching them on the youtube app frop the phone. Even in HQ. Is this normal ?
Same thing watching them from a computer in 480p ( i have to choose 720p streaming minimum to have it quite ok but for me its a lof of time to load) but I have seen some video test taken with the Note 2 and they look fine in 360p.
Anyone experienced it or has a solution ?
Can you give us a link to the YouTube video so we can see what's going on?
I haven't uploaded video into YouTube from this phone, but I don't see why the quality would be poor.

Just checked from the phone, it's HD, no problem with that. Quality looks okay.

I really have a good network connection, the carrier or Youtube must have blocked HD videos. still, my 3G HQ quality really sucks then
thanks for your time
now for the second part of the matter, is this normal 360p using the computer to stream is such a bad quality ?

Do you have a compression app like Onavo Extend running? Maybe the video is being compressed to save bandwidth on playback?
Sent from my Galaxy Note 2 using Tapatalk 2
The native YouTube app on our phones only support HQ on mobile data. HD on wifi.
There is a hacked YouTube app on XDA which allows HD on mobile data, but you need to root to be able to install it.
I'm using it at the moment and it's beautiful.
It's got nothing to do with your carrier blocking HD on mobile data, just the YouTube app itself.
Try the hacked YouTube app here on XDA.

Both YouTube and Netflix apps streams in 360 or 480p even when HD button is on. it's kind of annoying when I know I can get better picture than that. What's the purpose of having a nice screen when you can only stream in this resolution? is there a way to force these to stream in 720p? or at least an apk that will work on Galaxy Note II. i've found some but it doesn't work on my NII. thanks.

For youtube you can go to settings but I think its HQ and for you to see videos you have to make sure whatever video you choose to watch is a HD video that way when it starts you can select the HD option button remember on youtube you have to hope that the uploader had recorded their videos in HD also. Now for netflix it shows on its own since I have lte I really never tried to see if their was an option for HD in the settings.

mine didn't. It seems like it's not just me. There's a huge difference between the modded apk linked above than the one on play store. no pixelation and discoloration on the new apk. crisp and clear just like how it looks like on a laptop. but now it eats a lot more data which is fine since I have unlimited 4g nationwide. I guess I see why the official one doesn't offer true HD. ^^.
I hope somebody do something like that for netflix. I've searched but no one has a working apk on Samsung devices. :/

i dont know if you see the difference, but for sure when you hit the airplay on chromecast they will play 1080p is the movie is available on HD.
also, make sure you have the highest setting on your netflix account
I mean it's clear and good looking but I'm looking hard at it and it's not crispy like the tv.. And yes the shows I'm looking at I know for sure are super hd aka 1080 format, signal isn't a issue as I'm pulling 30mbit down on the phone, just wondered if it's 720 or actually 1080

OK no matter how I go to watch a 2 or 4k video trailer it lags very bad. I am on charters 60mbs service. Getting 59.9mbs with a speed test on my tablet. I tried loading it through my player, the stock video player, chrome, and the stock browser. It all lags and shutters badly making it impossible to watch.
Why would this play? YouTube app will not play higher than 720 and if I load it in the browser it also won't give me the option to watch it in full hd or higher

First of all, the Tab Pro/S screens aren't even 4k resolution so you wouldn't gain anything from watching it at that high of a resolution. Secondly, I'll leave it to the next person!
I know that this is only a 2k screen but it should be able to play a 2k or a 4k video right? 1080 plays fine with no lag or anything.

Wanted to chime in here... I have the U.S. Galaxy tab pro 8.4, I did not update to the newest version of software it keeps telling me that is ready to install. Its the black model...
I have on my networked server the timescapes 4k 2560p video clip. I copied it over to the 16gb built in sdcard storage on the tab and played the file using the stock video player.
It plays fine and is 99% smooth, here and there it may hitch once or twice. What I did notice is there may be a ghosting problem on this tab because the stars from the video clip smear when they move and are sharp when they don't in the background.
So 4k videos do play smooth its just there is ghosting.. This file was a .mp4
Maybe streaming them is the problem compared to playing them from storage with the video player built in
