Desire losing mobile network connection and will not turn back on. - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having a problem with an HTC Desire from Australia being used in the US on AT&T.
My father had this phone for a very long time. Since stock suited his needs for so long, I never bothered to S-OFF. Recently he was running out of space on his phone. I got S-OFF, flashed Supernova Rom and partitioned his SD card with 4ext Recovery, giving him 1.36GB to play with. Everything seemed to go fine until 3 days after the Rom upgrade.
His phone's mobile network keeps turning off and staying off. When I go to the quick settings tab, in an attempt to reset the mobile network, it doesn't allow me to turn it back on nor off. It's like the option is disabled. The only way to reset the network is by going in and out of airplane mode, but after time, even that one becomes disabled. The only way to reset from that point is by a full reboot.
I was getting com.andoid.phone force closing on me but I have fixed that by uninstalling facebook. I have tried 5 different radios so far and each one has the same problem. Works for 15 minutes to an hour then shuts off the mobile network. Leaves nothing but an X and no bars and never reconnects on it's own.
If anyone has any idea how to fix this, please fill me in. I don't know what I should try next.

Maybe its not software issue but hardware? Try to backup actual ROM(e.g. using Recovery) and install official 2.3 HTC Sense and find out if problem still exist.

Thanks. Will give it a shot. I'll check back in with results.

Go to settings/wireless and networks/mobile networks and check if you have access point names configured. I'm pretty sure that the upgrade deleted them and if it's like that do a fresh install.

If you need to restart connections you may not need to reboot. There is a utility in Play store called Restart Connections which does a reset of your connections. It works for me when I am in a low signal area and phone gives up after sometime.

I have faced similar issue as you describe here. I had internet until I installed an application on my HTC Desire (Froyo 2.2). It was some application which would let me access my HTC files through a web interface from my LAN PC. After I uninstalled the app I did not have access to the internet though it was connecting to WiFi.
Issue was solved when I did a factory reset of the phone, I lost all my apps and contacts, but after this internet was working again on my phone. Now I'm thinking that I better had to check what was the VPN parameters set as I believe that program could set some values there without reverting back after uninstalling it.
Hope this helps.
hi thanks for the reply but as i said, i have done a factory reset and its still not working..
Im on O2 uk and my data stopped working today, my apn name had the word void at the end???? i reset to defaults and its been ok since.
i guess O2 had some problems
Mine never said void but ive reset it to default many times, no change

Just a though
Do you have any VPN declared in the settings?
(Settings/Wireless & networks/VPN Settings)
No.
But its sorted now. I got the new sim but it didnt work so i went back and they said when they switched the sim they accidentally removed the free internet bolt on.
I think they may have bullshitted me somewhere but it works now anyway.

[Q] Why am I not getting signal at all...anywhere?

I just got a G2. perm rooted it. and everytime upon booting up it has signal for 1 second then literally just disappears and never comes back. can't choose mobile network or anything because it can't search for it. tried doing *#*#infor#*#* and it says GSM ONLY and everytime i try to change it to WCDMA PREFERRED it keeps reverting back as soon as i exit. the only way i've been able to get signal back so far is to connect to wifi and enable wifi calling, then after disconnecting i'm able to get signal and i'm able to check the WCDMA PREFERRED option but awhile ago i was on wifi calling then left my house and it was disconnected but wasn't able to get signal again.
can anyone help me with what i should do because although i might be able to get it back through wifi calling, this will be very problematic whenever i'm not near my normal wifi locations...
thanks for the help
Eh... I would try reinstalling a stock rooted rom.

Is it factory unlocked? Have you used an unlock code? Have you tried the full radio s off, super Cid thing?

I wonder if your SIM card is faulty, needs cleaning, or is just a bit loose in the socket.

This is what it sounds most like to me. Also try to install another rom since you have it rooted now and see if that fixes the issue. Make sure you do a Nandroid backup first though!

I never put an unlock code and I'm still on tmobile. I called them and so far I haven't had trouble with signal as much but my number doesn't show up under status in about phone settings...it just says unknown. Its only on this phone though, my n1 shows my number with this sim.

No it wasn't. For the past couple of days since calling tmobile, its been significantly better but today I did randomly have that same problem of no connection, but mostly right now my problem is my g2 not being able to read my phone number in "status" under "about phone" settings but it does on my n1. When I called tmobile they tried sending my number ota 3 times with no luck...

During the first 30 days you can go to a TMO store and get a new phone, pretty much "no questions asked". I'd go ahead and do that if I was you. Oh, go to a corporate store though, not a mall kiosk.
While you're there, get a new SIM, too. All free of charge.
If you still have the same problem after that, I'd try an exorcist
Is this problem solved now ? I got the same problem but have no chance to return it back.
If there is the way to solve it, could you please inform and share
Thx

My signal problems seemed to be resolved, at least for the past week. It was resolved by calling tmobile customer support and they did some tests. However, my phone not recognizing my phone number under settings> about phone> status, is still a problem. Even tried getting a new sim and still didn't solve the problem. Did numerous OTAs with tmobile that didn't work. My number still shows up on caller id and stuff its just that menu thing. Sounds insignificant but some apps use that to determine your phone number. Also, when putting my sim back into my nexus one, it does show my number...

Nevermind, my other problem was just resolved after reading a post in the cm6.1.1 thread. Settings-call settings-additional settings-my phone number.

[Q] Help! No mobile data after Starburst rom and data2sd. Network is fine.

Please help if you can!
I've been running a rooted HTC Desire for a couple months now without problem, but once I ran into the lack of internal memory, I flashed the Starburst ROM to get data2sd to work. This is my first experience with a different rom on the Desire, after never having problems on the Droid or Dinc.
I partitioned successfully, flashed successfully, and began starting up a "new phone". I hesitated to restore my backups, because the phone was cluttered and I wanted to start over and see the results before putting everything back on. I was at home, using Wifi to get everything loaded quickly.
Only when I left the house did I realize that I had no 3g or H signal, I had no data connection. I can make calls, and the network shows up correctly, SK Telecom, but it never connects for data.
Is this something that I should have restored from a backup, or some setting I need to change after flashing a rom? I'm not a total noob, but I don't know my way around radio stuff at all!
Please please help!!
Did you disabeled data and reabeled it?
Did you check the apn settings?
Have you rebooted?
Did you do a full wipe when changing rom?

Yes to all of the above. Under APN, there is nothing. I just woke up the next day and still nothing.
Just realized it's not S-Off, does that matter?
No you don't need to be S-off, but you do need the correct apn settings for data to work.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
Got the APN from the provider, web.sktelecom.com, and it worked fine for a few hours.
Then everything started force closing and restarting, and the sync logo was on almost constantly, whenever any internet connection (3G or Wifi) was present. When I disable all connections, it's stable, but it went loony tunes as soon as it had a connection... Every app I started, Handcent, Talk, etc, would restart itself after 10 seconds.
I may have overstepped my bounds... is there a safer way to improve internal memory without this ROM?
Not sure if you found the answer for your problem yet, or maybe just gave up. I came across your post while looking for the solution to the same problem. I'm also using a Desire on SKT and just flashed ReflexTSenseHD 1.8. It turned out you need to enter more than just web.sktelecom.com. I found a Korean sight with the rest of the variables and now it works for me just fine. Hope it helps

[Q] 3G Not Working Correctly

Hey there! I've recently started having problems using 3G on my DHD.
I'm running Android Revolution HD 5.2.3, but the issues started occuring many versions before this, I just haven't had a chance to sit down and look into the problem.
When I connect to 3G, the icon appears in the notification bar but I simply seem to have no connectivity at all. Occasionally the icon will change to a H. If I try to browse a webpage, the up arrow on the icon will light up and the down arrow will occasionally flicker, but nothing happens. Can't browse webpages or use any apps that require a connection.
Sometimes it will randomly start working again for 15mins or so and then drop out again. 90% of the time, turning airplane mode on and then off again will fix the problem for 15mins also before it drops out.
Does anybody have any idea what problem I may be having? I'm with Vodafone Australia.
Update: At the suggestion of another XDA member, I tried flashing another radio and I'm still having the same issue, so I assume it is not related to the radio.
Bonus Question: When I can get access to 3G, since upgrading to ARHD 5.2.3, the google homepage no longer detects that I'm on a mobile device and does't take me to the mobile version. How can I fix this?
Please do check your 3G mobile data APN configuration. Make sure the 3G APN matched with your current carrier 3G configuration (search google for your Vodafone APN setting). The letter H indicates HSDPA connection (or 3.5G, maybe).
In browser setting, check your user agent setting, set it to Android/mobile. If not, clear cache and data of Browser program in Manage Application Setting.

Fixed the browser, thanks!
However, I have set up my APN correctly (as far as I am aware) and am still having the issue. Could re-flashing my radio help?
Update: At the suggestion of another XDA member, I tried flashing another radio and I'm still having the same issue, so I assume it is not related to the radio.
You have a fine, working mobile data, so you shouldn't have to push radio,RIL or flash kernel though. My best suggestion was the APN thing mentioned earlier. Or its network carrier related maybe? Try to consult your carrier customer service.

I consulted customer service and they are uncertain of any problems and simply told me that their service is 'not guaranteed to be perfect'.
However, a friend who lives in my area on the same carrier with the exact same phone is having no problems at all with connectivity, so I'm certain it's related to my phone alone.

Wow, that is not a nice thing to say to a customer. Have you tried to revert to stock rom with stock kernel and vodafone radio?
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA App
I haven't tried that as I couldn't find the stock vodafone AUS RUU (I think that's what I need anyway...)
But I've had a custom rom and custom radio since the day I got my phone and up until two months ago or so my internet has been incredibly fast and not dropped out once, so I'm doubting it's ROM/Radio related... Starting to worry that it could be hardware.

I'm afraid so too. That's the worst case scenario. Still, you should consult someone who's expert in this matter personally. Not the repair shop (that would be last resort).

3G/Data connection hung up

I always have to reboot or turn to airplane mode to get it responsive again.
Its annoying cuz first, yay I can browse happily and fast, but after a few page, the data icon will stuck(arrow up and down wont change, stayed on white colors), which made every connection error.
Rooted/Unlocked/Custom rom/Custom kernel. Tried every baseband available but same trouble.
Is it related to faulty sim card? or is it my network is the problem? tried other carrier and worked fine though.
and fyi, AOSP gave less problems except connection drops sometimes(which is related to AOSP thing I guess) but data hang is not frequent. On Sense, every single time!
+1
Happens to me as well from time to time.
Anyone knows what is the cause?

I called my telco and ask them to check the connection with my number. they said its unstable and improperly connected. so they rebooted the (I dont know what they called) and etc. Rebooted my phone, turn on data, and damn it worked! Speedtest gave me average of 7-8 mbps for download. i rarely get that. now no more hung up. now i'm in love with my hox back. never thought thats the problem since other phones are working well previously.
