[Q] Best ROM/Kernel combination for louder speaker? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Alright, guys. I hate starting a new thread for this question, but searching gave me a ton of different results and nothing specific.
Background: My biggest issue with my GNex (as it is for lots of people) is the low volume on the external speaker. Let me clarify...I'm not looking to make music/media louder. This is purely to make the volume louder on phone calls. Part of the time my job involves driving around in my work truck and I nearly always use the speaker phone while on a call. Since JB was released, I can't seem to get any of the traditional mods/apps to work that used to work on ICS.
So, what I'm looking for is this. I'd like recommendations, based on first-hand knowledge/use, of what ROMs/kernel combinations would allow for the greatest speaker volume on phone calls. I've tried a few different ROMs (MinCo, ParanoidAndroid, Codename Android, etc) and a couple of different kernels (Franco and Trinity), but I haven't seemed to be able to find the right combination for tweaking the volume to be louder.
Any help you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated! :good:

In-ear bluetooth will solve the problem, i never found the speaker phone on any phone to be loud enough.

I had the exact same concern as the OP, I needed loud speaker vol for calls for work. I tried CNA 3.3 + Trinity kernel stable and the vol is loud enough for me to actually have to turn it down sometimes lol. I'm trying CM10 official nightly now with its default kernel and it has loud speaker vol too but the CNA + Trinity combo still takes the cake imo.
There's also other roms/kernels that implement the loud vol fix for e.g Bugless Beast if you want to stay as close to stock as possible for the rest of the rom/features, but I haven't tried that one yet, on most rom threads you can quickly scan the features list to see if its addressed.
Let me know if you find something else that I can try too

I'd like an app solution to this also/ i've tried lots of things that claim to work in the play store.

in call volume over headset too low

Anyone notice that the incall volume is too low? I noticed this when I was listening to Pandora in my car with the AUX input. A call comes in, I can barely hear the caller even with the incall volume at 100. I pump up the stereo to be able to hear, then the call ends, and I have Pandora blasting my ears off.
Tried apps, the service menu isnt the same as I've seen online in other posts, so frustrated......

Hey babokd,
Though this is my first post on XDA, I have been "trolling" quite a while and sucking up all the useful information I can. That said, this is the first time that I think I may have an answer. I hope this helps.
Bottom Line: If you have Google Voice installed, try uninstalling it and then make a call.
I will offer the troubleshooting I went through below so that anyone reading this can guage the validity of this and provide better commentary. I am not half as technically smart as the rest of the people here!
I have been having the same issue with my T-Mobile SGSII. I went through great lengths to figure it out. I noticed that on my phone the volume rocker works during calls to turn up and down when connected to auxillary and on speaker. However, the volume does not actually change.
I believe this issue stems with the KL1 update that I obtained through Samsung Kies. I reverted back to stock and the volume worked fine. I updated again to the KL1 update and reloaded all my apps, etc. Volume was broke again! (note: I did not install Google Voice when I reverted back to stock, so this could be an issue in the stock version as well).
As you suggested about the service menu... I am not sure if this is a KL1 issue, but on my T-Mobile variant of the SGSII (T989), the service codes that a lot of people are talking about do not work as well. It says "menu does not exist" after entering the codes.
In attempt to find a better answer for the T-Mobile variant, I updated to KL1 and installed all my apps one by one, but making a phone call after each app was installed. In my case, I found the culprit:
Google Voice
As opposed to other posts that I have seen saying Google Voice helps increase the call volume, I suggest that it does not. On the contrary, it makes the volume stick at low volume with no way to turn it up in speaker or auxillary. I uninstalled Google Voice and voila!, volume works again.
After all of this, I will still note that my SGSII volume is still not at the level I want during calls, but it is a whole lot more acceptable. Unfortunately, I can't use Google Voice for my calls now because I have it uninstalled just so I can make calls while driving.
I hope this was semi-insightful and helps you and others. At the very least, I hope someone else that is more tech-saavy chimes in!
Do any options help in the call settings like hearing aid or TTY? Seems like these might affect the volume output.
I was just on a call and the volume seemed to be max on the earpiece. Pressing the volume switch shows the increase and decrease as pressed but the output volume stayed at max. I made a second call and the problem went away. Not sure what the deal is, maybe related to the rom i am using (beastmod)
Are you running a custom rom or stock? Most custom roms I have run are too loud and I end up having the volume between half way which is nice to have wiggle room.
I am running.

Hi bigcletus and DensoYamaha41,
I am not sure if your response was to mine or the OP, but I will provide info in my case anyway.
I wish I had more time to post more information in my original response. In my case, I am only rooted and using the latest superuser. I have the stock ROM.
When I was troubleshooting this issue, I did go into settings to change hearing aid, etc., but that did not help. The only thing that helped was removing Google Voice.
It does seem to be an app incompatibility issue because when I end the call with Google Voice, the "hang up" sound played by the dialer app is really loud. When I turn the volume down and hang up, the volume of the "hang up" sound is really low. The actual in call volume does not change.
I do plan to run a custom rom someday, but I literally just got the Galaxy SII. I like to play with the original for a while before I change over.
If the OP has the same setup as me, I believe Google Voice is the culprit. For anyone out there reading this, do you have the the following: Google Voice installed on the T-Mo variant of SGSII and running rooted stock ROM with the KL1 update? If so, are you running into a volume issue as the OP stated?

[Q] Galaxy nexus low speaker volume

Hi everyone,
I'm getting a nexus soon but while I was looking around in the forum,it seems that the gnex's speaker volume output is low.I know that volume+ can raise the volume but it's currently not supported in JB.I read that some kernels/ROMs do boost the volume but not as good as volume+,not to mention that I would hate restricting myself to specific ROMs/kernels just to have good volume on the speaker. The nexus is amazing phone due to the updates and developer support but low speaker volume is kinda like a deal breaker for me since I can miss a lot of notifications this way then I might just force myself to get the S3 I had an I9100G and volume was pretty nice on it.
PS:I hope my thread is not a spam/trouble/annoying thread but I had to post it because this determines which phone I'm getting so..yea

I didn't tried this phone on ICS so don't know if this is JB issue, but yes volume of external speaker is low compared to i9100 I had.
ROM I'm using now is androidme and I think he raised a little volume by default plus he have 2 mods to go when further, though I found the highest one distorted my music a little.
Right now I'm not using a mod on his newest And its fine. Okys this phone has a led notification that S2 didn't had so that helps too

Hi Mate,
New version of Volume+ works fine on Gnex Maguro with Jelly Bean. Volume+ works best with Bugless Beast JB ROM. As most other JB roms are based on CM, the sound starts crackling once you pump the volume to 10. I think any stock like AOSP rom is best paired with volume+.
Hope that helps you.
Cheers, Sumit

How did you get Volume+ to work with JB...On the devs website, this is what he says:
"It seems Google have completely removed the ability to attach the Audio Effects to the system output. I knew they were removing it but I assumed they would replace it with something better but it seems they removed it without offering an alternative. This means Volume+ no longer works for boosting Ringtones/Messages/E-mails, etc.
Will it ever work? No idea. Depends if there's any way around it." I guess it does work for music and such, just not system stuff...

I love my gnex with jellybean, but the low volume is a really a killer Ive missed a few calls because it and you can't listen to videos in a noisy environment at all, guess well have to hope that a Google update addresses it.
There are only two things I don't like about this phone...the speaker and the vibrate...they are both much lower than my RAZR was, but the rest of the phone more than makes up for it...
Maybe use a pair of headphone but it gets kinda annoying at long term...
However your sure not to miss a single notification

My Gnex has completely gone mute
Bought my GNex from Play Store in US and got it shipped to india.
Have been encountering problem with loudspeaker from Day 1.
My phone's rear speaker stops working when:
1. Headphone is plugged in and then taken out.
2. Data cable is plugged in
3. Data cable is plugged out
4. Sometimes just like that... (no reason)
How i made it work again:
1. Plug in the headphone into the jack.. pull out a couple of times
2. Plug in the data cable move it up-down n left-right... it works
3. Just tap near the back of the phone with ur finger (near the speaker)
Also the volume levels keep changing as u move the jack or the data cable inside the socket.
Read somewhere like the OS is assuming that the headphone is connected n all... not sure if that is true...
Tried Wired Head Phone routing apps. the speaker worked for a few minutes, that's all.
Now... the phone's loud speaker has gone totally mute. It just refuses to speak... wat ever i do.
yup my dad realize too..very low speaker volume
is it can solve without root?
or will be solve on android 4.2?
anyone knows

[Q] HTC Desire HD Sound Issues with Touchscreen

Need some advice or trouble shooting tips.
Lately, my DHD is experiencing a sharp popping sound when I wake the device, use an app, or receive messages via Whatsapp or Line.
Presenting I am on JB and had been on AOSP for a long while. The popping sound only started recently after a period of testing Sense 3.6 and Sense 4 ROM's. Going back to AOSP, I noticed the sound right away. Even with all touch options disabled, the sound remains. It's coming from the rear speaker and even if the device is on mute, the sound can be heard.
As well, with online messaging, if I put my ear on the speaker, you can heard a slight hiss and it gradually gets louder until the pop sound cracks.
This problem doesn't happen with the new Sense ROM's I tested. What I have done was tested different AOSP and JB ROM's with the same result.
My next plan is to download a stock version on GB (ARHD is the choice I selected) and test the issue there. However, I am starting to think that I should return straight back to unrooted stock ROM, but I am not sure if that is really necessary.
My question is,,,, has anyone experienced this sound issue and if so, are there any suggestions or tips? As well, could someone experienced actually offer an explanation for the sound. Is my device on its' last legs?
I am thinking it might be kernel or radio related. I really don't know and hope someone can shed some light on this subject.

I highly doubt that it's software related. I've not seen anyone report any such kind of behavior and neither have I experienced it with either Sense or AOSP roms. The fact that the pop sound does not happen when you're on Sense roms is a bit strange, however I think it maybe explainable by the fact AOSP versions generally have boosted volume levels for better sound.
Personally, I think that you should get the speaker module replaced before it breaks down completely (which I believe is a very real possibility given the nature of the problem you've stated).
Just tested ARHD and when I make a call, there is a slight tick or crackle sound coming from the front ear piece. The sound is faint, but when put the phone to my ear and press the call button, I can clearly hear it.
I'm going to test the original radio and see if that sound remains. If it does, it seems the previous post above just might be my issue and I really hope not.
You could also try a can of compressed air.
By the way buddy, you've been here too long to be posting in the wrong section

LOL,, did I? HTC Desire HD General Section? Maybe I did... Where should I post?
As for the air compressor, I did that a couple of months ago. I'll give it a go.
As for changing the radio, I did and still have that click with calls. Looking grim at the moment.
It's a thin line between where to post, but yours is a question.

[Q] Call volume issues

I know this has been an issue for a lot of people by searching the forums, but I was wondering if anyone has had any success at all in boosting the in-call volume to an audible level on the Galaxy Nexus with JB installed? I've tried using a custom kernel (Franco and Trinity), NexusLouder MOD, the build.prop settings, all to no avail. I can hardly listen to the other person within a phone call, unless its in a quiet room. One anomaly I have noticed is that the in-call volume is louder one step down from the maximum, which is a bit odd. I know its listed as a bug in the Google Code database, but how widespread is the problem? It's pretty hard to classify it as a phone when you can't hear phone calls.

i would suggest you to get a good custom rom and flash it , most of them have unlinked volumes and pretty ok . i have tried xylon and para android and others. all are good . you can have your pick

[Q] Volume randomly goes low, audio crackling and popping

So after searching around the web and installing different ROMs I cannot seem to fix an issue with my Verizon Galaxy Nexus. My volume on speaker will just go real low by itself when listening to music/spotify/tunein. Sometimes if I wait a few minutes it will come back on by itself. Other times it takes a battery pull to get volume back. Even just a reboot doesn't fix it. I've tried the tricks that have been posted in the forums but nothing seems to work. This is only with the speakerphone. Headphone jack works great all day long. Here are the ROMS I've tried with no help.
MmuzzyROM, CM10.1, paranoidandroid, AOKP
Is there a specific kernel that fixes this?
Thanks for the help.
