Hello. I am new to this forum. I am curious how many people really use a swap partition and what is the method of of using swap in htc wildire s?
I am well aware of Linux OS and understand the need of swap but in case of android does it really improves something?
Hi.I will try to explain you what i know:
-swap partition is needed to work some ROM's,combinated with ext partitions.
-you can create swap partition with MiniToolWizard
-in same time, you can create with CWM recovery.
If you need,i will give you a link for MiniTool.
If i helped you,please click "Thank's" button.Have a nice day !!
Does android automatically detect SWAP Partition on SD Card and utilize it automatically?
Yes(i think).

does it? i thought the kernel had to had zram enabeled to allow swap use? i might be wrong though..
Most roms auto-detect, but I'd recommend checking with the devs before partitioning your sd card.
Also, unless you have a class 6 or upwards, it won't really do any good.

Where did u find that info?? Is class 4 mmc that bad????:s
never use a swap partition on any android phones. It does no good. The swap partition are made with your sd card which is more than 10 times slower than your internal memory. When an app is loaded or is sent to swap partition cache memory, it takes time to copy or load the files.
Android already has a system for moving unused apps to cache memory. So, let android do its job.

Just ignore his comment. We need Linux swap. Without it phone gets laggy. I tested it myself.
Download minitool partition wizard home edition. Its free Google it. After installing it and insert ur sdcard via card reader and run the program.it will show ur partitions.
You don't need to uninstall ur system. Just make nandroid backup using recovery. Re format only the ext and swap partition. Based on wat ext u had earlier. All partitions should be primary.
Then from advance recovery restore sd-ext.

@Edu: just search xda for details of swap partition. There have been number of discussions regarding it and all have ended up denying the use of swap partition. These have been comfirmed by much experienced devs, who have been cooking roms for more than 3 years. But still if you dont believe, i would recommend you to google a little and then make the decision.

But sir without it the phone gets very laggy. Means every games run slower. The antutu gpu score gets lowered.
U can easily get 645-630 3D with swap. But without it u can't cross 615. That may seem as little gain but for games it becomes a big issue.

Maybe that is because the extra cache memory are directly transferred to swap memory. Games which require huge cache memory can be of profit. thanks for the screens btw
@op : just take nand back up and back up your sd card. Try the swap partition thing and if it is beneficial, go ahead or else you know what to do

Hi, i'm new here so i'ld really appreciate anyone who can really help me on this:
I created a swap partition(256mb) on my sd card for my HTC wfs. now after making series of research on swap partition, i found out that swap parttion is necessarily not needed and even if i av to use the 256mb i allocated is too much. Now i need help on how to delete the swap partition without losing my DATA ON MY SDCARD. PLEASE ANYONE WITH THE RIGHT HELP

that's kinda not possible i guess..with mini partition tool you can delete swap or ext3 partition and create ext4 visa versa..but if you wanted only fat32 it isn't possible.
either if you have ext3 or ext4..open mini partiiton tool..delete swap and delete ext3 or ext4(which one you have)
and create partition(ext3 or ext4) from remaining free space...in this your fat32 will be unchanged..
but obviously ext3/4 will be deleted..bt its okay to hv swap partition..256 MB hasn't big space..the whole concept of swap derived frm link2sd i guess..latest int2ext scripts dont need swap..but int2extv2+ need.

Copy all of your data to your pc, then format the card via clockworkmod recovery. It should remove the partition. If not you can try gparted for linux or easeus partition master for windows pal.
If your trying to keep your ext partition but without a swap then copy your data to the pc, then select partition sdcard from clockworkmod recovery. Just don't select a swap and you will be fine
Oh, and make a nandroid backup to back up whats on your ext partition

Hi everyone,
i was just wondering about what partition sizes I should set for my memory card using Apps2SD as I am a little unsure. I am currently using a 8 GB SD Card.
I was thinking to set it up with a 32mb swap, 512m-1gb ext2, and the remainder as fat32? Is that suffice? the ext2 size I assume is the space I would dedicate for the installation of apps.
Then after that, should we convert ext2 to ext3?
Please advise
Thank you.

I wouldn't use swap at any time. Your phone has 578 MB of Ram - I don't know how much is left for the running system after the substraction for radio, 3d,.... but it still should be around 400MB. Using swap would just slow down your phone.
A 256 MB ext partition for programs is enough.
Greets
Kind of depends, I will for sure get a bigger partition then 256MB, some games are 20/30MB in size. Will be nice to not worry about those anymore!
I just installed apps2sd then started installing was I meant to do different? lol

Hello guys,
I'm a newbie with Android.
I've not understood: with A2SD I can "migrate" all apps to sdcard or there is a way to choose what to have on the device and what to have on sdcard?
Thanks,
ghale
I have this question too. are all the apps going to the sdcard or you choose where to go ???? or when the phone memory fills the sdcard is used ???
and another question I have is if the sdcard apps are copy paste backup able

I have read that if set to 0, no swap partition will be created. The default is 32MB.
Im not using a swap.
I just created my ext2 using gparted on Linux. I resized the original fat32 and then used the free space to create ext2. No data was lost on original partition after resize

Hi there,
im not a big user of apps and won't end up installing many to the sd card. Would you suggest I set up the partitions as follows:
0mb swap, 512m-1gb ext2, and the remainder as fat32?
I have also read that if you convert EXT filesystem from EXT2 to EXT3 after partitioning, it results in better stability/performance, and by converting the EXT filesystem from EXT3 to EXT4 results in best stability/performance.
Can anyone clarify this please?
Thanks again in advance.
EDIT
Found it !
This is where i'm getting confused... this article, for example, states to allocate 32 MB to the linux-swap partition, 512 MB ext2 partition, and remaining free space as a fat32 partition (for an 8GB SD Card).
It also states this is the most common setup...
I used 980mb for my a2sd not swap and everything seems to be working just fine

Im just thinking... the Android OS is designed to do this for you, when it runs low on free memory it starts closing apps based on a ranking system for deciding which is 'least important' to avoid actually running out. If you later switch back to an app that the OS has removed from memory it will be reloaded from internal storage which won't be as quick as if the app was still in memory, but on the other hand it won't be any slower than if it was being loaded into RAM from the swap partition on the SD card.
Actually, I can't see swap helping... Either the Android OS will avoid running out of physical memory as it's supposed to and never actually use the swap partition, or worse it does actually use it as if it was extra physical memory (unlikely, I think) which will interfere with the sophisticated memory management scheme that's already there. Is this the reason why Android phones don't ship configured for swap? maybe because the OS is already doing something better that makes swap unnecessary?

As long as you followed the correct procedure (accessing recovery, installing the Apps2SD.zip file via recovery and set the partitions), then you are set.

Well, what would be the point of installing Apps2SD then if you did not allocated extra space to the ext2 partition
Backup everything on the SD Card before attempting:

You will not need to hard reset, just access recovery again via Linux and select the option to Partition the SD in recovery mode, enter the partition sizes you want, then you may want to select the option: convert ext3 to ext4 for improve stability/performance. Yes, use the Gold Card SD.
Hey folks,
I spent a long time searching, but I can't seem to find an answer. I'm using my sdcard and the partitions I created from my G1. I'm running low on space on my sdcard and I realized that the ext partition is not being utilized.
I tried to move some apps to the sd card using the native apps2sd (settings > manage applications) but it seems to be moving it to the main FAT partition and not the gig I set aside as ext.
Before I repartition it and get merge the ext partition with my main partition, I wanted to know if there's any point in having an ext on the G2. If so, how do I take advantage of it (for apps and cache)?
Its an 8gb class 2 sandisk with r/w speeds of over 10mbs. Aside from the gig for ext, I also have a wee bit set aside for swap, which is just about useless now - right?
Thanks for all your help!

Jury is still out over the need for swap with the Desire Z,some say it makes a difference but what is clear is that with the swap partition enabled,on Unity at least there is a display bug on widgets,I would say that the phone runs ok without it.
I don't mean to be rude, but I don't care about swap. The G2's performance is great. I am concerned with space and before I merge the ext3/4 partition with my main FAT partition, I wanted to know how to utilize that gig I set aside as ext.
Thanks again.

Ok but you did ask about the swap partition being redundant or not, anyway a gig ext is a waste of space with this phone so repartition and make it smaller 128mb or 256mb should be more than enough
When I was on my rooted stock u20j I used a app called 'Link2SD' which made use of the ext2-partion to store apps on... Maybe try looking at that on the market?
Good luck!
I had an ext partition with a2ext on my G2 but honestly it wasn't needed. I have a ton of apps and still have just under 1 GB of internal memory left.
Swap, as I'm sure you're aware, is pointless on this phone. Compcache is about the only thing I'd use and even that is debatable.

No, it won't use the ext just Fat32.
Instead of the market app, use darktremor's A2SD script. You have much more functionality with it. It also can use ext2, 3, and 4. There's an app that I'll try to locate on my computer for you that gives you a GUI to control it all once you have it installed and active.

I have no Idea what I'm doing I go to recovery and press partition card and pick 1 or 2gb and it doesn't affect the phone. I need more memory so I can have more apps and also in low memory I can't get texts so its kind of a necessity. I'd like if possible a walkthrough in simplest terms and if possible avoiding adb cause it confuses me

The easiest thing is to put the card in a computer, copy anything off of it onto a folder on the computer, then use a partition editor program on your computer.
If you can get to that point try a program such as gparted to partition the sd card. 1-2 gb in ext2 or ext4 format and the 2nd partition will be the remaining space in fat32 format.
If you Google something like "partition sdext android"someone may have a tutorial with pictures. I'd just find instructions that are the easiest to understand.
You are on the right track though. As you've found out partition creator in clockwork recovery doesn't work well.

just curious- what filesystem does it format to?
Uh, no recovery will fix "it does not do anything" "problem". You need to actually install/flash some sort of a2sd script so that the partition is used (unless the ROM already includes that functionality). Like, S2E, Link2SD, data2sd, move to sd-ext or whatever.
If you are planning to use Link2SD then go here: http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-all-things-root/364833-link2sd-you-tutorial.html
This will explain how to partition your uSD card with "Mini Tool Partitioning Wizard" and how to use Link2SD.
I have over 120 apps downloaded and installed and still have over 80MB of space on the system thanks to Link2SD.
I partitioned the uSD card with the Xionia recovery (2GB), then just reformatted it to FAT32 with Mini Tool Partitioning Wizard. This is the easiest way to partition the uSD card, it's fool proof. If you already tried to partition you might want to check it out with Mini Tool .. first to see what your uSD card looks like now.
All recovery's format the partition to ext.3 which is not usable on every ROM. FAT32 can be used with every ROM except ICS
Keep in mind not every app should be moved and linked. Widget apps, Titanium Backup, ROM Manager, etc.
If an app doesn't work properly while it's linked, just remove the link and move it back to the system.
Mini Tool Partitioning Wizard can be found over at Cnet

You know how to make partitions with 4ext. You cant do it without losing data. Unless you use gparted

I recommend to backup your sd card to pc first.
Then backup your sd-ext partition within 4ext if you have a stuff on the partition.
Within 4ext there should be an option to format sd partitions, then repartition with 1gb. Consider increasing it to 1.5gb if you have spare fat32 space and want to install even more apps.
Finally restore sd contents from pc and sd-ext from recovery.
Thanks guys. I thought I might be able to just increase it without doing anything else but obviously can't. Thanks again.

Theres no actual maximum limit, but it highly recommended that you dont make the ext partition more than 1.5gb
OK, thanks, I will reduce it, but is that why the phone doesnt see the increase?

you can't just swap cards. have you restored restored the ext4 partition from the old card to the new card?
also depends which leedroid rom you are using. you can get much more space by changing hboot and installing the data++ version of his HD port, read the FAQ. this approach requires s-off.
you don't see the increase because a2sd won't report internal memory as "internal + ext". apps get moved to ext automatically. keep them on internal will trick them to sd-ext, i.e. don't manually 'move to sd'
you can use more of the ext space by also moving dalvik to sd-ext, search the leedroid threads on in that FAQ for flashable dalvik to sd zips. there will always be a limit depending on how many apps you install.
i always recommend using an app like 'diskusage' to browse all your partitions, that way you know exactly how they are filling up
Chief,
Thanks for your responses so far... I am thinking to "upgrade" but the LeeDroid 3.3.3 Data ++ ROM is no longer available to download it seems..
Any idea where I might find it?

Also when u partitioning all *our data wil be lost so backup your memory card first.

Can we Change The amount of partition once we have done it before ??
512mb sdext will be just fine. I've heard of some scripts that do the trick with ram but I've didn't try them. With internal memory free u should get faster, more responsable phone, and for gaming u should try some of the roms made specialy for that (gingerDx is very good and superfast, have one or two bugs but developer will fix it very soon). hope it helps
U can't change size of partition without formating all data (I think u need to use killdisk software). But realy u don't need biger swap partition of 512mb. Ofcourse sd card class 8 or 10 is preferable.

I can't use partition, i read a lot of tutorials and any of them helped me, 'cuz my mobile don't recognize the partition, but my sd make it. How can i me it work??
ps: i have sd-card of 2gb
4 now tnks
CAUTION
you should do it only if your sd gives at least 6mbps read speed.Otherwise your phone will lag even in best roms like a granny driving a lamborgini
