Hi All,
Love this community! OK, ran into a hiccup while trying to get GPS working on my CM10 Alpha:
-Was on CM10 Alpha with safe recovery (Alpha 4)
-Decided to fix GPS by flashing an EL29 ROM (Calkulin 3.0, which I gravitated to since he's legendary but I had never run his roms. I figured everything would be totally current since it's reputation seems to be the best)
-Got my GPS lock and everything was going fine
-Tried to boot into recovery but it flashes a Team Rogue sign and then just reboots into the main system
-Figured I'd mobile odin EL26 BUT there's a problem with the rom and I can't download an app from the market!
So:
1) Which ROM should I use to get my GPS lock that has a good recovery and will be good for re-flashing JB once I have a lock?
2) Since I'm still rooted, can I flash that ROM via desktop odin? If so, where are the best instructions on how to do that?
----(I typically follow QBKing's videos but my current train of thought has me flashing a stock rom, then re-rooting it and I feel like I should be able to do this with quite a few less steps since I'm already rooted)
You can download mobile odin apk from xda I think, pretty sure I got mine from here.
Personally I'd get lock with stock GB or stock ICS, install directboot EL26, wipe all and flash JB

Yes. There's a free version of mobile Odin on xda by chainfire but you have to download the flash kernel for the et4g listed as sph-d710 in post 5 or 6 of tthe mobile Odin thread, the free version won't automatically download the correct flash kernel like the pro version will. PM me if you need help or can't find the thread I have a copy of the free version in my box account and a link to the thread so u can post a thanks to chainfire

Hello everyone, I'm a new to the et4g , i just came from an evo 3d a few weeks ago. Right now I'm a running calks latest fd26 with the help of acs test recovery. I've been searching spool over the threads but can not find links for any of the custom recoveries. So what i would like to know is what do you think is the best recovery in your opinion and if you can drop links/point me in the right direction thanx!

You should NOT be using custom recovery in ICS if you are not absolutely certain how it all works. I know that the Calk's 1.5 FD26 kernel came with one but if you use it incorrectly, you will have a very nice paperweight.
The only recovery that is recommended while on ICS is the STOCKCWM-EL26.TAR recovery that you can get here and it should be flashed from Odin:
http://chris41g.devphone.org/index.php?dir=EpicTouch/Stock+Repack/EL26/
Thank you, i have read that about it could cause many problems but wasn't sure which could be used

If you were on Gingerbread it wouldn't matter. But, you're using ICS so it makes a huge difference.
Since you are on Calk's 1.5 like me, I will try to tell you how to use the built-in recovery as safely as possible with the FD26 kernel.
I use the recovery to backup or restore the FD26 rom only while I am using it! (Do NOT use it to flash another rom or restore a different version of Android, if you plan on going to a different rom, see below!) You can do other simple stuff that won't harm anything like wipe cache and davlik too.
If you plan on flashing a different kernel or modem, use ODIN:
If you plan on going to a different ROM, use ODIN to flash the EL26 stock recovery I gave you a link for.
Once you flash the EL26, you will no longer be able to boot into ICS, so be prepared and have the ROM you want to flash (with EL26) already downloaded to the phone. Always wipe manually or use Calkulin's 'format all' before flashing a rom.
If you are not certain about using the EL26 recovery or get stuck in some other way, just use this easy guide I wrote to bring you back to stock rooted with CWM recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24158551&postcount=9980
Edit: Corrected link posted above. Thanks.
I was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem I'm having. I installed the AOKP rom (Build 32) and used it for a good month then today I flashed the stock rooted EL29 rom using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
The problem I'm having now is, when I use e4gtauto to install CWM it goes through it really quickly and my phone never reboots. Even if I do it manually CWM isn't installed. I want to reinstall AOKP but I can't if I don't have CWM to flash CM7. Any ideas?
I had that issue before. I had to use Odin and just flash this kernel( http://db.tt/0QJkleJR), rebooted into recovery wiped and flashed as normal. I use mobile odin to just flash this kernel and never had an issue since. You don't have to go back to a el26 ROM, you only need the kernel to wipe and flash between roms.

Thank you for the quick reply.
So do I absolutely need Mobile Odin?
And also, once I install the AOKP rom, I use Odin again to flash the EL26 kernel so I can switch between roms?
You don't need it, but it is a huge time saver. I always flash to el26+cwm using it. I don't ever use my p.c., but I would advise that you always do a md5 check every time before flashing. There is a free lite version on here somewhere. I never go anywhere without mobile odin and root explorer, plus I keep several roms on my phone at a time.
Mobile Odin is a mobile version will allow you to flash el26+cwm from your phone, just hold power+volume up to reboot into as you would with regular odin.

Thanks for the help.
Hello!
If there is a thread for this already this can be deleted and I would like to be shown the link, but from what I can tell most threads are old info or a bit misleading.
So right now I'm running an ICS ROM. I hadn't looked into the fact that going from ICS to a new ICS ROM back brick the phone, so I looked a bit more into it. From what I gathered, using a recovery on and ICS rom to install a new ICS ROM has a CHANCE to brick the phone?
If this is true, what is the easiest way to go from one rom to another? For my recent ROM I used the guide where I use odin mode to install the stock GB ROM then use another tool to get CWM on my phone then use THAT to install the ROM.
So my main question, is, is that the easiest way to go about changing between ICS roms? Can mobile ODIN be used more effectively? If that's what I have to do that's what I have to do....but I feel like there should be an easier way....hopefully.
Thank you all and thank you devs for all of your hard work!
There's an el26 + cwm kernel our there. I know you can get it from several threads to include the Frankenstein rom. All you need to do is mobile Odin that flash and as long as what rom you flash has an ics kernel you are good to go. No need for multiple flashes and odins

Ya mobile Odin makes it ez. Flash a non-stock recovery kernel prefferably the el26 cwm on mobile Odin then in cwm use calkulins wipe all zip then flash rom of choice

I'm currently running the stock EL29 with root and CWM but whenever I try to install a custom rom (AOPK, CM9, etc...) through CWM, it says "Instillation Aborted" as if they weren't made for this phone when I know they were. What's going on?

Silly question, and not assuming, did you use autoroot for cwm?
May want to Odin to el26 and autoroot cwm ans try it that way.
I personally Odin back to el29, autoroot, and (knock on wood) never had an issue.

Usually that happens on a bad download. Did you download them on your phone or PC?
It turns out that is was just the version of CWM that I was using but now I have a new problem. I flashed CM9 and everything worked EXCEPT the data connection so then I flashed AOPK and had the same problem. The only way I can get online is via wifi. How do I fix this?

Check you baseband in settings>about phone. If it says unknown then just flash a modem of your choice. This has happen to me. On several occasions.

I started from scratch and followed all the steps until I ended up in the same boat. AOKP Build 38 working perfectly EXCEPT data. I tried the EL29 and FE10 kernels but neither made a difference.

Try going back to gingerbread and flashing the EL26 kernal. Then flash the ICS rom you want through that recovery.
AOKP and CM9 have problems with data. every time you or system turn off screen say goodbye to data until 1.enable disable airplane mode or 2.reboot that's the main reason I stay away from these awesome roms until source arrives.
These roms are the best. IMO
1.odin back to stock el29 full reset oc
2.boot update profile and prl
3.copy the rom files to sd
4.turnitoff it off
4.enter download mode and flash el26+cmw for AOKP or el29+cwm direct boot for CM9
5.clear cache, factory data reset, clear dalvik on advance menu
6.go back and select install zip from sd card and choose the rom and flash it
7.flash gapps if apply
8.go back and select reboot system
9.enjoy these awesome roms.

I think I FINALLY got it to work. I started stock with rooted EL29 Odin-OC, flashed the "StockCWM-EL26.tar.m5d" in Odin, flashed the AOKP build 37 rom, flashed gapps, then flashed the FE16 kernel AND modem. When I rebooted the data was working.
Not that I am advocating this, and I am far from an expert, but I odin flash a stock rooted rom (SPH-D710.FC22_CL287574_ROOTED-oc-sfx) without going back to el29 just to have a nice clean stock rom to flash over with something else (like FIFO2). I just try to make sure I do everything in the same session so I don't get stuck in a stock recovery.
My order when flashing (non-Odin):
calkulin's format all
Modem (sometimes...if newer is available)
Rom
Kernel (with a custom recovery; sometimes the roms come with a stock recovery so if you reboot before installing a custom one, you'll have to either use odin to flash a custom recovery or mobile Odin)
any additional items that the rom didn't include (like gapps, etc.)
reboot

Another thing to keep in mind is that AOKP was ported to the E4GT. That could cause issues depending on what you're coming from. Make sure to read all the instructions from the dev before flashing. If the worst happens, buy insurance on your phone and smash it...That's what I did with my evo when I bricked it.
Hi everyone. I got a question about switching to a more current ROM.
I currently am on "PARANOIDANDROID 2.52 4.1.2" (Baseband FH13) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31047469
And want to try something Jellybean. For example, "Touched By SGSIII Version 6.0" (GB27) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2051374
My memory is foggy, but I remember having to flash EL26 before moving to ParanoidAndroid from my stock ROM and going through a big ordeal. I wish to not be surprised when trying to change ROMs this time, so my question is what is the process? Not step by step, since I have more than a moderate understanding on what need to be done, but just clarification on what it is I need to know so not to brick my phone. What ODIN, which recovery, if need be. (I'm on CWM 6). I believe I would be switching to JB from ICS, so will I have to go to stock JB first? Ect...
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Kchannel, I think what he means is will he be switching from jb to ics kernel/recovery wise, but it kind of threw me off too:thumbup:.
Actually since source dropped, none of that is necessary. Just head over to here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39865775
download the GB27 with Agat's recovery to your phone, downloan a gb27 modem if you don't have one, reboot to recovery, flash the GB27 modem if you don't have it yet, wipe data, cache, dalvik, flash TBSG3, flash agat's kernel, reboot. You'll be golden. For the wipe, it's never a bad idea to find and use the jb format x2. Have fun! The reason for flashing agat over the stock kernel is so that now you'll have recovery, as before when you had PB, before source dropped, that wasn't an option.

Sorry, I was under the impression that base bands corresponded with android version.
For example, I thought that EL26 was a kernel that needed to be ODINed to then run a ICS custom, if I had a GB ROM. If I wanted to run newer ICS ROMs I would have to ODIN and updated kernel like FH13. Thus if I wanted to move over to a current JB ROM I would need to ODIN GB27. I guess I was wrong.

EL26 from the repo(thank Rwilco12 and Chris41g) http://www.rwilco12.com/downloads.p...ls/Recovery Kernels/GB/Chris41g/Stock CWM/TAR
is considered a "safe" kernel for flashing. Use mobile or pc odin to flash, reboot to recovery, clear cache/dalvik, flash jb rom, flash jb kernel(gb27 if your custom ROM is that build, can also be found in repo), reboot, should be good to go. First boot will take awhile. Good luck!

Sorry, I'm a bit confused. So do I need to flash EL26 and thus go through the steps mentioned? Or do I follow the steps in your first post (omitting EL26, but making sure I flash a modem)? Maybe its easiest to just tell you what my understanding is and you can correct my sequence or change the details:
Since I am already on a 4.1.2 rom, I can go directly to TBGS3 (or TBGS4 now) but I have to
1. Flash the GB27 modem in recovery
2. Wipe (JB format x2)
2. Flash the TBGS4 rom in current recovery
3. Flash the GB27 kernal (GB27 + Agat's tRec)
Currently on ParanoidAndroid 4.1.2. (FH13, CWM 6.0, MetroPCS)

Seems like I am getting different answers but I guess I won't know what works without trying. I'll try tonight but becuase the above stock rom doesnt preserve data and I will need to reenable my MetroPCS service, it will take time but I will try to update with how everything went.
Well, I made it to stock GB27. I will post details on how I got there tomorrow. But for know, which JB roms do you recommend? I would prefer a TouchWiz one, thus I was looking at TBGS4, but any opinions are welcome. Thanks again.

There are several good ones out there. Shadow_God's Jellverse is super smooth, and has tons of mods thanks to SG and Tdunham. Goddly's White Out is also another good, stable, ROM. If you want JB stock, me and Febby both have GC01 rooted available that works just fine on Sprint or Boost, and in the same thread, I have a debloated version as well. Good luck!
