My phone was constantly rebooting so i went into CWM and did a factory reset and it froze while wiping and since then it wouldnt reboot. I went to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1551901&page=11 and followed the directions for the one click recovery using odin 1.81 but it stopped updating on the data.img. I kept it connected for over an hour. I disconnected the cable and rebooted the phone. now when i turn it on it says "firmware upgrade encountered an issue please select recovery mode in kies and try again" i tried holding power and volume down and it briefly boots up but then goes to the firmware upgrade screen. Kies isnt recognizing the phone as being connected. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
you are not the first one today (yesterday) reporting the same problem. There were about 3~4 incidents reported during today. So, don't go further at this time. I hope some more Devs joining to give more helps.
During the time you are waiting, read the almost same case -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1554392
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1549382
Also, please describe the full details about what you did and how you did -
where did not download the rom, what's your rom/kernel version before installing the rom, how did you proceed to odin the rom, etc...
You mentioned that you tried to flash the rom using the one click recovery using odin 1.81. Can you please be more details about this?
Before flashing the rom, you said that your phone was constantly rebooting. What was your rom and kernel at that time? Do you think there was anything suspicious causing the rebooting?
Maybe the solution would be simple but I saw many people reported same thing, there would be common issue in here. So, we need to find out what that is....
Sorry for not giving you the suggestion at this time.
This isn't an ODIN issue. ODIN is just the messenger in this case.
There is a problem between the ICS kernels and custom recovery where it will sometimes corrupt your /data partition if you reset/wipe/restore/format/etc. Any large partition operations are suspect. Copying files seems fine. It doesn't necessarily do it every time so it'll work for some but brick others. Even if it works a couple of times, it can brick at any time.
The EMMC memory actually becomes damaged and even JTAG repair will not fix. By the time you get to ODIN the damage is already done. ODIN won't be able to write to /data even using a .pit file with repartition set, ODIN one-click won't write to it, CWM will hang writing to it, JTAG will have issues also.
Your best bet is to get a replacement.
There are multiple threads about this, which is why people suggest you go back to a GB-based kernel+CWM to do your ROM flashing.
This is one thread where the data.img corruption is discussed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504808

Maybe try using odin to flash a kernel with recovery, and get into recovery before it reboots(or pull battery since it won't boot after odin is done doing its thing). then restore a nandroid, or flash a Rom?

I think we are in synch - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1556609 (the suggestion that I provided).
Adding to this, I personally recommend to format the sdcard before installing anythig - there's a option to format sdcard.

My phone kept looping on the loading screen, so i pulled the battery and got in CWM. When i did a data wide so i can restore from a saved file the phone got stuck on wiping.
So i pulled the battery and the phone kept on looping the samsung logo and would not go back to CWM, got inside ODIN and tried the stock one click EL29 ODIN method, everything flashes but gets stuck on data.bin. i re-start the process to only be stuck in the same data.bin step. the ODIN one click pro does not stop responding it just gets stuck.
I tried the ODIN method where i load the stock none rooted tar file in pda mode, this method completely passes but when it restarts it goes back to loop mode.
I tried getting into recovery mode but it loops also (Holding Volume up and power)
I am currently trying a different ODIN oneclick TAR file, maybe this will work, i will update when it finishes.
I do not know what to do next, i have flashed all individual files in ODIN also.

I did search all over xda and androidcentral, i was in ics 4.0.4. Thanks for the links i left the phone flashing, when i get home i will read those threads. If it all fails ill just go to sprint tech bench and get a refurbish replament.
You were on a ics ROM ?
Used a ics kernel to wipe data ?
Were using ROM manager?
Using touch cwm ?
Didn't read OP for the ROM either ?
Almost all ics roms will tell you not to use a ics kernel with cwm that is the cause of the bricks ...
If you can answer yes to any of the above you didn't read enough... There are a dozen threads about bricking phones on here that would have saved your phone....good luck at sprint getting it replaced

Samsung screwed us by changing some partitions and until we get source to know what they did its best to follow the OP to a T because no one has bricked when using a GB kernel to wipe or flash ....just the ics ones

ODIN OneClick is just serving as the messenger to tell you your /data partition is corrupted. You could have used CWM, ODIN, ODIN OneClick, etc. They would all tell you the same thing. The EMMC memory is actually damaged, it isn't just a partition data problem.
It is unfortunate to have the issue with ICS-based kernels and custom recovery, but that is why all the threads stress using GB-based kernels with custom recovery to do your flashing.
Lesson learned. At least you work for Sprint and can probably get things resolved with less hassle.
Yeah lesson learned. I just did the repair ticket on it and will have one on tuesday.
When the new one comes i will go straight to ICS build 31, and not even mess with anything else.
Its just amazing how we cant figure out a way to format/partition the currupted /data.

It isn't a format issue.
The hardware emmc memory is damaged.
JTAG bitblasting would have overwrote everything if it was fixable. That is failing in this case.
So basically you are asking why we can't reformat a hard drive that crashed and make it work.
You are doing what's right. I had to flash the one click Odin 3 times to get out of a boot loop after trying to restore a GB ROM MD5 from a ICS kernel. Learned the hard way. But if you can get to DL mode, you can usually fix it. After the third time i was able to get into standard Android recovery and do a factory data reset. Then flashed the rom again and it booted right up. I was lucky though. Hope it works out.
PHONE WONT BOOT AFTER USING ALPHA 6 ICS(darchstar)
I was using this rom since it came out and haven't had 1 problem. after just using it normally it froze. did a battery pull and tried to reboot but was stuck on logo with the cm9 animation. so i went to recovery mode i had an error. i tried doing a format and froze. so i did another battery pull and now my phone wont boot into recovery or download mode. all i get is a blue led light. any ideas?

So unfortunatley I was stupid on my first device, and it got that dreaded emmc brick. So before I root and update my phone to cyanogen mod alpha 6 I want to clarify what is considered safe at the moment. I plan to do the following, and if someone could let me know if its most likely safe it would be greatly appreciated.:
(I currently am on a new Epic Touch I purchased, which is not rooted, on 100% stock out of the box)
1. Flash E4GT-EL29-directbootCWM-v3.tar.md5 through Odin (will this work as a first step, or do I need to flash something else first in order to root?)
2. Through that recovery flash my Cyanogen Mod and Gapps
3. Never do anything to my phone after that without extensive reading
Should that most likely work without bricking? Thank You!
That should work. Also, from what I've read, if you are going to wipe your phone, DO NOT use "Wipe data/Factory Reset" through an ICS recovery. That has been triggering the random emmc brick. Use "Calkulin's Format All" instead or Odin back to an EL26 kernel. Hope this helps.

New Plan, would this work and be very safe?
Take unrooted stock phone, put it into download mode, flash SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097 package found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
Then flash a StockCWM-EL26.tar.md5 file in Odin
Then do a Wipe/Factory Reset
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Then Flash CM9 Alpha 6 and Gapps
Never used odin to flash kernels, just mobile odin cause it doesn't increase flash counter. Sounds like a good plan though

Rule of thumb. Never flash ics to ics unless using one of agats safe ics repacks or mobile odin el26. Wiping data or format all in ics recovery can cause a brick.

I wanted to try an AKOP ROM or two on my completely stock, never rooted Note 2 running the OTA UCALK7 update. I followed the guide here (flash the SU injected stock UCALJ2 image) to root and now my note gets stuck at the Samsung logo. I have tried the following:
Downloaded the completely stock UCALJ2 unrooted image and flashed via ODIN.
Tried flashing both stock and rooted ROMs on another computer using the stock USB cable.
Flashed CWM touch via ODIN after flashing rooted UCALJ2 image, it can boot to CWM but fails miserably most likely to the lack of root.
My guess is it's bricked because sammy closed the root hole in the UCALK7 update and flashing back to rooted UCALJ2 isn't enough to bypass the patched exploit. Is there an ODIN flashable complete UCALK7 image that I can try (I've looked to no end, all I can find are rooted zips flashable via CWM) or am I really up the creek?
Pull the battery.
Hold the Center Home Button + Vol Down + Power
Slide the battery in.
If you do this right you can get into odin before the Samsung logo. I just had the same problem because I flashed the wrong recovery. It worked for me.

Thanks but I can't even enter the network configuration settings - it tells me to insert a SIM. My SIM is in the phone.
I'm having other problems too which I think are partition related. Apps are acting funny, saying there isn't space on the phone (dropbox can't download anything, etc). I'm trying to get TriangleAway installed so I can just RMA it but I can't even download it to my phone. Also a CWM fix permissions fails even though I grant it root access.

I know what you're saying, I'm definitely using the right file and process. I'm a pretty seasoned veteran when it comes to rooting/odin/RSD/fastboot, etc. I've run custom ROMs on dozens of phones since the G1. What's happening to me is apparently not a common failure with the note 2 or GS3. Is there a PIT file available for the AT&T Note 2? I see one for the Verizon Note 2 but I wouldn't dare try to flash that.
There is a pit file around but I really don't think it's that.
And also just checking don't mean to insult ur intelligence but if u are using Odin it will be a .tar, if it's a recovery its I .zip

Yeah, it's a tar file I'm flashing through Odin, got it from SamsungUpdates: Samsung-Updates.com-SGH-I317_ATT_1_20121005095854_bpaaavv07o.
I also tried flashing the stock ROM in deodex'd zip form after I got a custom recovery on there, still no dice. The non-functioning modem and lack of proper root/storage affects both Sammy and CM/AKOP based ROMs. I don't know about the modem part but I've seen weird things like this when the NAND starts going bad and things written to it don't "stick." I don't think that's the case here since it's only on its 4th or 5th flash. More than likely the latter problem is a file system issue. I have no idea about the radio.
I'm going to try and exchange it tomorrow. At least I got the flash count cleared and I'm back on a stock ROM (with the same problems).
Hey all, my sister just got a brand new GSII from T-mobile and wants me to put cyanogenmod on there. I saw that the 4.3 was still a bit buggy so I'm going with 10.1 / android 4.2
All of the stickys for rooting are a bit old so I'm not totally confident choosing one without posting first. She's on 4.1.2, what would you guys say is the best route for rooting? the toolkit? the odin way? or the last method. Speaking of which, is this phone T989 or the D?
Looking forward to answers, thanks guys!
PS - Do these rooting methods also unlock the phone?

If ur using any newer rom besides 4.3 try using twrp older cwm has a problem flashing the newer roms, it doesnt like to load the preload partition so u will end up with boitloops, if u want 4.3 u need the 4.3 recovery, u can find it in the op, just flash in recovery and then reboot to recovery and flash 4.3

U can go one of two ways, for twrp u can DL the flashable zip and flash it in cwm, or u can use Odin and DL the tar file for the latest twrp and flash it over cwm with Odin, and the 4.3 recovery zip is flashable right through recovery

HOW TO ROOT AND FLASH CYANOGENMOD 10.1 TO YOUR TMOB GS2 IN 2013!
Download latest 10.1 ROM and put on your SD card or internal storage
CM10.1 nightly
Download latest Google Apps/Gapps under the 10.1 column and put on your SD card or internal storage
Gapps
Download Odin3-v3.307
Odin3-v3.307.zip
If you're already on Android version 4.1.2 then you're fine, continue below, if not;
Download 4.1.2 stock rom
Tmobile GS2 Stock 4.1.2 ROM
1) “Extract” or “unzip” the downloaded stock ROM to get the .tar.md5 file
2) Run Odin3_v3.07.exe on PC desktop
3) In Odin - only check ‘Auto Reboot’ and ‘F-Reset’
4) Click on the PDA button then browse to the folder where you extracted the stock ROM “tar file”
‘T989UVMC6_T989TMB_T989UVMC6_HOME.tar.md5′
5) Connect USB cord to phone and PC and boot into download mode. In Odin, the ID:COM box will change its color and its an indication that the device is connected properly to PC. If you still do not get any results, try another USB port on your computer.
6) Click the Start button to begin flashing.
7) Wait until it finishes or watch out for the word “PASS”.
Once the phone completely reboots, perform wipe/factory reset to get a fresher firmware installation.
1. Hold Power and Volume Up together, this will switch the device into recovery mode.
2. Release Power after holding it for a second but continue to hold the Volume Up button until recovery menu appears.
Select wipe cache
Select wipe data/factory reset.
Select reboot
