[Q] Going to Cyanogen Mod without bricking - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So unfortunatley I was stupid on my first device, and it got that dreaded emmc brick. So before I root and update my phone to cyanogen mod alpha 6 I want to clarify what is considered safe at the moment. I plan to do the following, and if someone could let me know if its most likely safe it would be greatly appreciated.:
(I currently am on a new Epic Touch I purchased, which is not rooted, on 100% stock out of the box)
1. Flash E4GT-EL29-directbootCWM-v3.tar.md5 through Odin (will this work as a first step, or do I need to flash something else first in order to root?)
2. Through that recovery flash my Cyanogen Mod and Gapps
3. Never do anything to my phone after that without extensive reading
Should that most likely work without bricking? Thank You!

That should work. Also, from what I've read, if you are going to wipe your phone, DO NOT use "Wipe data/Factory Reset" through an ICS recovery. That has been triggering the random emmc brick. Use "Calkulin's Format All" instead or Odin back to an EL26 kernel. Hope this helps.

Thank you, one more question. From an out of the box phone with no custom recovery or root or anything, will it be okay to flash that CWM file I listed as the first thing that gets flashed, or do I need to flash another root package first?

Use sfhubs one click el29 then mobile odin el 26 kernel and flash cmod and gapps through there. Also dont flash calks format all in ics recovery either

New Plan, would this work and be very safe?
Take unrooted stock phone, put it into download mode, flash SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097 package found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
Then flash a StockCWM-EL26.tar.md5 file in Odin
Then do a Wipe/Factory Reset
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Then Flash CM9 Alpha 6 and Gapps

Never used odin to flash kernels, just mobile odin cause it doesn't increase flash counter. Sounds like a good plan though

Thanks,
is going from EL29 to EL26 considered safe since it is going down? (Im just really cautious as I bricked going from ICS to GB and although these are both GB I want to make sure its okay)

Yes its fine as they are both gb

Rule of thumb. Never flash ics to ics unless using one of agats safe ics repacks or mobile odin el26. Wiping data or format all in ics recovery can cause a brick.

Help with root!

Ok, So i've successfully rooted my epic 4g touch and I successfully installed the rogue CWM found on this forum. Now whenever I try to flash the CM7 zip (trying to get AOKP), it will only boot into CWM and the phone won't boot. I've tried re-rooting, wiping dalvik (gives me volume patch error), and wiping cache, etc.
Any help?
No need to boot flash aokp in the recovery and on pretty sure aokp will boot
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
It also seems to be installing the zips very fast.

No, it doesn't boot. Gets stuck on Galaxy S II screen.
Help please!
Flash it twice. This is a common occurrence
And by that I mean flash it twice successively, one after the other. Should fix you up. Let us know if that doesn't work.

I've done that. It didn't work.
You don't need to install CM7 to install AOKP.
Try this: ODIN to stock EL29, use one click root (choose option C, then I (this'll root your device and give stock CWM recovery)).
Then boot into recovery, flash AOKP, gapps and FD02 modem if you'd like.

Really? Interesting. Ok well most people are actually flashing AOKP and Codename from the EL26 CWM that is linked in the OP of those threads. That is actually how I have flashed over 15 times with different builds. So if you can Odin EL26 with clockwork mod you should be able to flash AOKP after you flash a calkulin format all to wipe all relevant partitions and don't forget to install Google apps.

Yes, root works a bit different on this phone. Pretty much every single rom available will provide with root and superuser when it is installed via some sort of custom recovery or Odin. Odin is actually a very safe and convenient method of flashing.

Hmm that's strange. A lot of people definitely have the fast zip installing issue but when they flash it for the second time without ever rebooting recovery or the phone it takes a good 15+ seconds to flash and it successfully writes to your phone and boots up. Going back to stock certainly can't hurt. Perhaps start from there.

How to go back to Gingerbread?

I have been reading a few posts, and have been having a TON of problems with ICS, so I am going to go back to Gingerbread MIUI. Can someone please verify how I should do that?
I know I have to Odin el26 with CWM, but can I then just flash another ROM or do I have to do a full wipe (restore to stock via Odin) and then work my way from there?
Thank you in advance.

I use Mobile Odin to flash the stock EL26 CWM Kernel, then right when it reboots....I hold Vol ^ + power button to get to CWM, then wipe and restore my GB Nandroid, or flash GB ROM.

This works, as does the other methods I have read on here up until this point. This is personally how I do it. I odin EL26 CWM (no reboot option) then I yank the battery and turn back on going into CWM before phone boots. Once there, wipe everything and then restore nandroid backup. I have done this several times coming back to GB off of several ICS ROMS including MIUI4.
BTW, this will result yellow triangle from just using ODIN for the CWM file. I have a jig, so don't care. That triangleaway program might work also, but I haven't used it. If you don't care about the yellow triangle, then no matter.

Right, and no triangle problem with your choice either.
OK guys thanks for the replies. I do have a backup of a GB ROM. I am probably just going to Odin the el26 with CWM and just wipe and flash my GB ROM over again. I don't really care about the triangle, I just don't want to go through the hassel of flashing this, then Odin that to get CWM.
Or I can just do one Odin, get CWM, then flash from an ICS ROM to a GB ROM, thats probably the way I'm gonna go.

Custom recovery

Hello everyone, I'm a new to the et4g , i just came from an evo 3d a few weeks ago. Right now I'm a running calks latest fd26 with the help of acs test recovery. I've been searching spool over the threads but can not find links for any of the custom recoveries. So what i would like to know is what do you think is the best recovery in your opinion and if you can drop links/point me in the right direction thanx!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
You should NOT be using custom recovery in ICS if you are not absolutely certain how it all works. I know that the Calk's 1.5 FD26 kernel came with one but if you use it incorrectly, you will have a very nice paperweight.
The only recovery that is recommended while on ICS is the STOCKCWM-EL26.TAR recovery that you can get here and it should be flashed from Odin:
http://chris41g.devphone.org/index.php?dir=EpicTouch/Stock+Repack/EL26/
Thank you, i have read that about it could cause many problems but wasn't sure which could be used

If you were on Gingerbread it wouldn't matter. But, you're using ICS so it makes a huge difference.
Since you are on Calk's 1.5 like me, I will try to tell you how to use the built-in recovery as safely as possible with the FD26 kernel.
I use the recovery to backup or restore the FD26 rom only while I am using it! (Do NOT use it to flash another rom or restore a different version of Android, if you plan on going to a different rom, see below!) You can do other simple stuff that won't harm anything like wipe cache and davlik too.
If you plan on flashing a different kernel or modem, use ODIN:
If you plan on going to a different ROM, use ODIN to flash the EL26 stock recovery I gave you a link for.
Once you flash the EL26, you will no longer be able to boot into ICS, so be prepared and have the ROM you want to flash (with EL26) already downloaded to the phone. Always wipe manually or use Calkulin's 'format all' before flashing a rom.
If you are not certain about using the EL26 recovery or get stuck in some other way, just use this easy guide I wrote to bring you back to stock rooted with CWM recovery:

Noob Root Questions

Hello,
I am brand new to all this stuff and this is my first post. I just rooted my phone and installed CWM. My question is I want to install the blu kubin rom but is there anything else that I need to do regarding the kernal before I switch from EL29 GB to an ICS rom? Also if I dont like the rom and want to switch to another one what do I have to do so I dont brick my phone? Do I have to flash back to EL29 before switching roms? I am so confused!!! Thank you all so much for all your help!!!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
You will need to Odin the el26+cwm5 kernel to flash blu kuban, to return to GB if you so choose, just Odin one click el29, to change to another ICS rom Odin the el26+cwm5 kernel and boot straight into recovery to flash the rom you choose. I've gotten into the habit of just odining el26+cwm5 any time I wanna use recovery no matter which rom I'm on. Make sure you ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS READ EVERYTHING IN THE ROMS OP AND FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY. Also read up on the stickied threads about flashing roms and how not to brick

You can also safely use the format files that avoid the wipe data/factory reset that is so risky instead of the el26+cwm. But both methods are safe, just depends on your preferences.
Calkulin's format_all and/or Rujelus22's format x2 (which is in the OP of the Blu Kuban thread)
For best results, everyone will tell you to flash ICS roms using EL26 kernel. I used EL29 to flash the BluKuban Rom without a problem (not saying u should) I think you are safe as long as you DON'T do a factory reset or reset data INSTEAD use Calkulins Format all file OR Rujelus Wipe 2x file Then flash the Rom.
So; Download the BluKuban Rom.
Download Rujelus Wipe 2x file or Calkulins Format all file.
Place files to sdcard.
Go into GB recovery (hold vol up and power)
Flash Rujelus wipe 2x or Calkulins
Flash the BluKuban
Reboot. First reboot takes a bit.
After reboot go to settings, Rom updater and download part 2 (it finishes theming Talk) that's all.
Alot of helpful people on that Rom. Just ask if u have any further questions.

Also if you want to flash a different Rom, just go into recovery (if the ICS rom that u downloaded has recovery)
Go into ICS recovery. Flash Rujelus wipe 2x file or Calkulins format all file. Then Flash your new Rom.
NEVER go back to GB from ICS (if u choose to go back, flash EL26)

You can get the format x2 right in the opening post of the Blu Kuban thread, just use it and you'll be fine.

If you've just rooted but haven't installed recovery then you need to run the autoroot tool. And then you can more forward with flashing Blu Kuban.

From CM10.1 to TW Goodness without computer?

Hi all, I went from stock ICS FH13 to CM 10.1 WFTN... I love it but not having MMS work is driving me crazy. Now I want to try a TWbased ROM and decided on the Goodness. In the instructions it says
Prerequisites: Currently be on JB FK09, FK23 or FL04 (recommended is FK23).

Checking the Stock ROM repo I see that they only come in oneclick.exe format and tar format unrooted.. Is there a way I can get it in zip format ROOTED so that I can use mobile Odin to boot into EL26 CWM and install FK23 before flashing to Goodness or does it have to be done on a computer? I don't have access to a computer where I'm at so I'm praying I can get FK23 without one!

I didn't know mobile Odin could flash stock ROM! I thought it was just used to flash kernels. I checked the mobile Odin thread and read that it could flash the stock ROM and if I get the pro version I could root it while its flashing. I do have one question though. This is what mobile Odin description says:
All partitions are supported, as are loose files, .tar files and .tar.md5 files. Mobile ODIN will even check the MD5 signatures before flashing. While in theory Mobile ODIN can repartition and flash EFS and bootloaders, it will cowardly refuse to do so, for your own safety.

It is my understanding that FK23 format and repartition my internal storage partitions. Does this mean mobile odin won't work with FK23?
Yes mobile odin can flash roms in tar format. Before I cause the loss of your stuff on your sd card I will let someone more experienced tell you about that. I have actually never flashed a jellybean stock rom through mobile odin. I have done so with ics and gingerbread but there was nothing that would wipe rhe ss card in those. Jellybean needs new partitions. So its best to wait. Sorry. I just dont want to ve responsible for giving wrong info. Goodluck.

You can flash this stock build using cwm. I'm not sure it chimes with cwm, but that doesn't matter. You are flashing stock to set the partitions. Once flashed, flash el26 with MO, reboot into recovery, follow Goodness OP wipe instructions, flash Goodness, modem(?), profit.

It's ALWAYS a good idea to do a backup on your pc when you go flashing around different builds, setting partitions, etc. But no, the only thing that should(I say that lightly), completely wipe out your internal storage is formatting it. Good luck!
