[Q] Searching for Kernel manual - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

HI mates,
I'm searching for a link/doc/manual on how to install the latest Franco Kernel to my JB 4.1.1 GN, I've read several posts and couldnt find a guide on how to do it; also I found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367341, but no guide on how or what kernel to install.
Please I'd appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks a lot.

if its a zip file, flash it in recovery. if its an img file, flash it in fastboot. until you do a bit more reading and educating yourself, i dont think that youre ready quiet yet. but, thats your choice. just be careful when asking for help in the franco kernel thread without first educating yourself :silly:

Meaning, I just copy the a zipped franco kernel to 'sdcard' on my GN and install it from CWM Recovery and that's it? It'll boot on the new kernel? It reminded me when I had HTC running xdandroid, everything was smooth and easy

yup, thats it. unless its in a .img form, since francisco likes to do that sometimes. if its in .img form, then you need to fastboot flash it.you have a nexus now, its the easiest to modify

Well, I installed Milestone 4 and after installing it I sent it to reboot and it's now frozen on the 'Google' initial screen, should I allow sometime to the Kernel to read the hardware and stuff or its just screwed

was it in zip or boot.img form? maybe it was a bad download. to get back up, either flash a known good kernel or just reflash your rom(in recovery). it shouldnt take more than a minute to pass google.

Its was an ok zip file, how can I access recovery mode? I used to access trough a program called QuickBoot, but since I can't access the userland anymore, how can I access it?

Hold the volume keys and then the power key to enter the bootloader
Then use volume up or down to navigate to Recovery and hit the power key.

pull your battery then reinsert it. then power button + press in between the high and low volume at the same time. this will take you to the bootloader, then chose recovery. anyways, you should give trinity kernel a spin.

+1 for Trinity kernel.
Especially now that I got used to the default color setting.

Ok that worked, I flashed Milestone5 and now it's booting with message (Android is upgrading ::: Optimizing app XY from 108)

yup, that is right. its just rebuilding your dalvik cache now. after it rebuilds it, itll finish booting

The first and foremost reason to change kernel for me was battery draining, I will try this M5 for a week or less and later on will try Trinity, thanks a bunch mates

[Q] [NOOB Q] Having some basic issues with flashing the Beta

Right sorry about this but I'm having a little problem trying to flash the Sony Beta so I can flash another ROM. Basically, I've just unlocked bootloader and then I go on to the next bit that says flash these three images separately etc...
Anyway I go to flash the first image and cmd just hangs on "waiting for device".
I think I've got it all set up right. I'm guessing I need it in the mode where I hold search when I plug it in and the blue light comes on right?
Anyway I'm guessing I'm missing something very easy. Help would be appreciated! Thanks!

did you put in into fast boot? hold the search key for a bit then plug in usb, the blue light will then turn on and you'll hear your usb noise. Then you hold SHIFT on the folder of fastboot and of course flash it, it will run after that

nah it should only take a sec for the boot img and depending on file size of the system etc it should take a min but the fast boot cmd would give you any errors if something went wrong
and yes you did mention it lol but im reading off a little screen off my phone so just respamming things that come to head just give it a min if you don't want that one i recomm ka12 if your not a cmda user

Try "fastboot -i 0x0fce flash boot boot.img"

if you unlocked it then its unlocked, which you can verify by the blue light if it stays on while the usb if plugged try that method ^ and see how that goes if it doesn't let me know
also you can try another method which i did but im a cdma user and i used dooms kernal by flashing of course then installed official sony then back into fast boot and install stock kernal which booted up fine but cdma users have bugs no texting etc so i just went back to stock,

my phone will not boot into recovery mode through CWM or by powering off and manually starting it. I get a dead android with a red triangle and ! sign, how can i fix this?
galaxy nexus (verizon)

That is the stock recovery. You need to permanently flash CWM (a.k.a. a custom recovery) for you to get into it.

If you are rooted, you need to check the CWM thread for the file to delete through root explorer and then re-flash CWM to get it to stick.
Or use rom manager to flash it.

Ah yea, good point.
I prefer the difficult and manual way lol
Or re-flash your recovery from fastboot, then boot into it, and install whatever ROM you wanted.
OR don't flash cwm at all, just 'fastboot boot cwm.img', allow it a few seconds to enter cwm, then do your thing, flash your rom/much needed zips, reboot and you're good to go.
this world is all about choice ain't it?

I agree. This option will let you boot into cwm once. when you finish there and reboot your nexus will wipe every trace of cwm. When you need it again just use the same trick again.

Before anybody suggests I use search - I DID search, and it brought me to this thread.
Background: After unboxing my shiny new GNex last week, I immediately flashed stock yakju IMM76D using GNex Tookit.
So ... let me make sure I understand this. With stock recovery, when I fire up fastboot and select recovery, it is NORMAL to get the little dead robot with a red triangle above him? And the only way I've found to get out of it is to pull the battery? Seems odd.....
(I did temporarily flash CWM via the Toolkit and it worked fine. I don't want to leave it on as I understand it will prevent me from getting future OTA updates.)
As long as you run stock ICS, you'll always get that error upon every boot, even if you rename/delete the "boot-from-recovery.p" or whatever. The only solution is to flash a custom ROM and that error will be permanently gone.
At least what I've read and heard and what it's like for me.
If you get that error, your phone will reboot after a minute or so, but like I said it should be gone after flashing a custom ROM.

it is not a error. that is the stock recovery and if you press vol up and vol down (might have to press power too) it should get you a menu.

I renamed it, it should be the same as doing away with it. However, upon rebooting, I faced that triangle. I ran stock 4.0.4 by the time.
you still have to reflash CWM after deleting/renaming the file.

Just for additional info, those files are not present on any original stock ROMs. They are added to a stock ROM if that stock ROM is updated, i.e., OTA update. They serve no purpose but to re-flash the stock recovery (i.e., which is the android lying on its back with the red !) On every boot of your device.

Who knows? I personally don't care, and no one else should either, as:
1) the OTA update file to IMM76D is availability for any yakju user to install,
2) the full IMM76D image is available to install,
3) the IMM76D source has been pushed to AOSP.
Those are three options for you to get IMM76D on your device, with the first one being the same as an OTA update.
For me, IMM76D runs perfectly fine, and better than ICL53F.

I can answer this question: it is impossible. There are certain problems in work of this Mod. The first: does'nt making full nandroid backup. The second: does'nt flashing boot.img. It is necessary to develop this program still. But something, already is able: root, interface modding, ect....
Howdy.
I have flashed this recovery image and for the first time, can boot into recovery and see what I'm meant to see! Thanks. Previously (2012 hardware) I just hung on the white HTC logo screen.
Now, if I select backup and restore, press the power button, all the text disappears and I'm left with the central hat image... but nothing much happens. Pressing power again brings me back to the main menu. Same thing with -power off. The top option of reboot system now works just fine.
Any ideas? I'd like to backup my current system before flashing WildChild 3, you know - just in case anything goes wrong!
EDIT: immediate edit. cancel all of the above, I'm just new to recovery (obviously!). I went through the main menu a few times, it told me the back button was now active and away I go - backing up as we speak! Apologies!!! and thanks!

[Q] Noob needing help

Hello peeps,
I've just come from an iphone so please forgive my stupidity. I've been looking around XDA and various other places for 2 days trying to sort my One X, but don't seem to be making any progress.
I currently only have access to the bootloader
I managed to unlock and root the phone, but then got stuck on a boot loop which I haven't been able to get out of. I was able to get into the OS, but had no cell or wifi, but now I'm just stuck in the bootloader after a failed flash of probably an incorrect RUU. The phone has been relocked.
I ran Vtool from post 7 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1989358, and my main version is 2.17.206.2
I'm in the UK on the o2 network.

So do i need to flash the boot.img and the rom from CWM and I should be ok?
Just look around in the One-X forum, do some searching, see if you can find a stock rom to download to your computer then move to your phone.
CWM has this handy feature I think in the "mount" tab, where you can mount your phone as a usb device, from which your computer will pick it up and you'll be able to move the roms file to your phone for flashing.

Thanks for the info - think I have a rom I can use.
1 more question before i continue, how do i flash the boot.img file? I have a zip with the rom / boot.img
I have mounted as usb storage and copied the zip file across
I've installed CM, after wiping cache, dalvik, system etc, but seem to be stuck on the JB animation screen.
Wondering if this means the OS is installing, or if I'm still stuffed....
I don't know if I need to do something with the boot.img file as the onlyl thing i did was load the zip file for CM

Personally I've flashed a total of three roms which isn't many, but in all my time spent reading threads of the latest and greatest roms I've never heard anything about a separate boot.img that you needed to flash... (perhaps a One-X specific thing?).
Just be patient with it when it's booting, the first boot after an install always takes longer.

I do need to flash the boot.img first.
I'll do that once my battery gets some more charge.
How much charge does it have right now? It's important to always go into using CWM on a substantial amount of battery life. Upwards of %50 is recommended, but but you should do just fine with around 30, that is assuming you're able to tell.

download the rom's boot.img and type with the phone in fastboot mode:
Code:
fastboot flash boot path/to/boot.img
after that your phone will boot up correctly

Fastboot won't let me flash cos of the low battery, so will let the phone charge for a bit then try again. Thanks.

Anyone capable of unlocking bootloader R800x?

Unfortunately, my bootloader is locked and I don't even have a status to see if my bootloader status can be unlocked when I type in the code to my Xperia Play. Now, I've read that some people have R800x unlocked, and i'm interested if anyone here (trustworthy), does it? I am also willing to pay...
Most people say go to "Alejandrissimo", however, his website doesn't seem to exist anymore. I sent him an email but i'm not too sure how good that will work. If anyone knows of a trustworthy website or anything that would help very much.

how were you able to do that when step #2 says:
"In your device, tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can continue with the next step. If it says No, or if the status is missing, your device cannot be unlocked."

Skip #2, The R800x is different then the rest of the Xperia Play line. Just enter your MEID to get your code and then follow the steps to unlock.

Wow, I believe it worked. The CMD prompt appeared to be all good and same with my unlock key. Now, what do I do?... How do I know which kernel my Xperia Play can use?

Install Recovery [XParts] [Xparts Thread]
As for the kernel I suggest DoomKernel. [DoomKernel Thread] [(CDMA) DoomKernel Download Link]
EDIT:
I believe DoomKernel has built in recovery. I dont remember... it's been a long time since I played with my R800x. Also stop by this [THREAD].

Ok, so I have X-parts downloaded. Now I have no clue what to do. I wasn't sure which kernel to download
[CDMA][v2] DoomKernel + WiFi Drivers.zip
[GSM][v14] DoomKernel.rar
However, you put CDMA, so I'm assuming the CDMA one. How do I put that onto my phone though?

Yes, the R800x is CDMA. If you're NOT going to use your R800x as a phone (call, sms, etc...), then it doesn't matter. You also don't need X-Parts if you're going to use DoomKernel as it has it's own recovery built in. Doom explains how to flash his kernel in his [THREAD] or you could use Flashtools. Also here is a [LINK] on how to enter recovery on DoomKernel.

Wow this is awesome, I read his tutorial and I have doom kernel on my play. Only problem is that I am without wifi, I read his tutorial, but I do not know how to do this part:
reboot phone and enter recovery
flash the wifi modules update.zip for my kernel
reboot phone and enjoy the kernel
now that i have a custom kernel though, how would I go about putting new roms onto my play?

To Flash the Wifi Modules you need to enter the Recovery, here is how you do it:
[How to enter Recovery]

There are multiple notifications to tell you when to press the entry key:
LED will light up to BLUE
The phone will vibrate when its waiting for keypress
Thats it you should now enter DoomKernel Custom Recovery
[How to use/navigate in recovery]
BACK button to GO BACK
SEARCH button to SELECT
HOME button to GO UP
MENU button to GO DOWN
[How to Flash any .zip file]
Select "install zip from sdcard"
Select "chose zip from sdcard"
Find the .zip file that you want to Flash and selected
Click "Yes - Install..."
Wait until it finishes, Reboot and enjoy
This applies to any .zip file(ROM,Mod,Module)

You do not have to hold the Back Button you need to press it multiple times(As it boots up).
BTW you are using DoomKernel Version 3, right?

Oh no! I am using v2
What does this mean? If it means I have to get v3, I think I may want to use what you have, LuPuS instead since it seems more popular. I also feel it is more easier. But I am so confused with what .FTF files are, kernels, and ROMs. I'd like to just be able to use the new 4.1.2 jellybean rom and have it completely working with overclock, but that seems impossible..

Okay, first the way you enter the Costume Recovery on both Doomkernel V2 and V3 should be about the same.
FTF stands for Flash Tool Firmware(or Flash Tool File) they can be both Official Firmwares or Costume Kernels.
The Kernel(.img or .ftf) is basically whats between the Hardware and the Software(the OS and applications)
And the ROM can be described as the Operating System.
If you want you could use what I use:
Lupus Kernel Version 13 and Racing SPEED EDITION EOL ROM

I'm guessing that you downloaded the ROM to your computer, in that case you have to move it to your phone's MicroSD Card. There are two way of doing this(Since you are stuck on a bootloop), the first is to remove the MicroSD Card from your phone and use a MicroSD Card Adapter to move the ROM from your PC to the MicroSD Card. The other way would be to enter the Recovery(while its powering on press the Voulume- Button Multiple times) and mounting it.
Once you have the ROM on your Phone's MicroSD Card you can flash it by selecting "intall zip from sdcard"(In the Costume Recovery)

Ok sweet, I've learned how to do the custom kernel and recovery. I'm almost done asking you a ton of questions (I appreciate you a ton, I tried looking through guides and was severely confused since this is my first Android altogether). Now I ultimately decided on using Doom Kernel because it comes with CWM, which is nice. However, are there any roms with 4.1.2 that work with Doom Kernel? Upon looking I didn't find any in the rom area.

I think DoomKernel is only compatible with GB and ICS ROMs, if you want to get JB you need to use Lupus Kernel or Turbo Kernel. IDK why the Recovery would be important but Lupus Kernel also has CWM Recovery(All Costume Kernels have some type of Costume Recovery).
EDIT:
In Lupus Kernel you can chose what Recovery to use(CWM or TWRP)
