Just got t-mobile service update - what should I do? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I just got this message on my T-999.

I'm running FreeGS3 but I guess that didn't matter to T-Mobile.
I searched the forums but didn't see any discussion of an OTA update. Where can I go to see the update files? I'm fully rooted and know my way around root explorer.

Well, I did fresh Nandroid and Titanium backups and then let it try to update. The phone rebooted into CWM recovery and attempted to apply the update. It failed due to some kind of signature problem. I then rebooted back and got a message saying the update failed and the previous state would be restored.
Before all this started I did have issues with low free space on the internal card (it seems to give a warning if less than 500MB is free). I also get renotified about a missed call after every reboot (even though I have cleared the notification before rebooting).
Could this be a phantom update caused by low storage space?

You can't apply the new ota updates if you're rooted and running a custom recovery. Devs are working already to get the flash able zip for us rooted people

Just to add to this, you can go into titanium backup & freeze software updater 1.0 & software updater 3.0 if you want to stop the update from coming through while your on a custom Rom. You can then wait for your rom to be updated shortly by the dev with the new base incorporated.

I just used Kies to update mine, you can use Kies while rooted and on CWM but it will reflash to stock and you'll have to reroot

Im in stock rom and rooted.applied the zip update from rom development page and i had success not losing root.

I have the stock rom, and have rooted too. I am waiting for the upgrade zip.
My only complexity is that I have unlocked the phone.
Will upgrading using t-mobile's update lock my phone back?
cheers!

Hi, is the freeze software updater in titanium backup or is it a separate app? I could not find it. If it's in titanium backup could you tell me where it's located? Thank you.

Definitely do a titanium backup first! I used ota root keeper to test how easy it was to go back and forth from rooted to temp un-root and titanium backup failed to startup afterwards. So basically I just reinstalled titanium and then it worked fine. So if you're going to use ota root keeper ...
Make Titanium backup first (should be a standard to all)
use OTA root keeper to backup su and then temp un-root
apply patch
then OTA root keeper to go back to root and delete su
If you have problems with titanium again, just reinstall
And if you end up not being able to go back to root...just re-root (but should not be a problem)

[Q] Firmware upgrade with root?

Good morning everyone.
As you can see from my post count, I am fresh meat on the XDA forums, and more in general to fiddling with Android.
I rooted my phone while ago, doing great so far (but no custom ROM yet, waiting for CM 7/9).
Today I opened up Kies and found thet there's a firmware upgrade avaiable.
It reads like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Now, my situation is like this:
. I am rooted
. I have uninstalled several system apps (mainly Samsung Bloatware)
Being the total noob I am, am I safe to to the upgrade from Kies? (apart the known fact I learnt that Kies is Satan's stepchild)
Thanks in advance for any reply!
Update from Kies is a risk. Many ppl was posting that they have some errors. I prefer to update by Samsung Ota, just need wifi connection and thats all. I made the update with rooted phone and after update phone was still rooted.

I saw another thread similar to mine being opened, in which it says that this update is just the 2.3.6 one.
But I'm already on 2.3.6
My main concern about updating was about the fact that I'm rooted and uninstalled some default apps, and if that would interfere with the update
This update should bring your Version build to "GINGERBREAD.XXLA2"
It is now available in Italy both through Kies and OTA (I updated yesterday evening via OTA).
I think this upgrade can unroot your phone. But you can always root it again.
The "Root via Recovery" method should work on this release too.

Yeah I'm investigating about ClockworkMod (I hate mindlessly use things without prior knowledge of how they work)
By the way I have succesfully upgraded with Kies (OTA Update kept failing instead).
Now I'm waiting for an update of ZergRush root, cause this last firmware update screwed it.
Thanks anyone for the tips

Not sure if that will happen soon, but I would recommend you to read, as mentioned above, about the rooting via Recovery:
It is also possible via ClockWorkMod.
About the CWM, via ODIN it is very easy to flash and you have the possibility to reflash the stock recovery in a couple of seconds, too. This may be needed if you update next time via OTA.

[Q] Rom not very stable

I'm on stock 4.0.2 rom and kernel. The launcher FCs about once a day and the UI isn't very smooth, so I ran a benchmark and the score I got was even lower than the nexus S (I ran it several times even after reboots).
How do I fix this? I don't want to lose my apps and settings, mainly because I don't have much time to redownload and set everything up.
The bootloader is unlocked and I have a nandroid backup of this rom.

If you like stock then go for stock 4.0.4 IMM76i or try other roms here tools to get started, with stock if you dont modify stock files included with the factory image you will be able to get OTA updates as soon as they are available.. Meaning your phone will be a yakju and supported for updates straight from Google and not waiting for carriers
Edit: and Yeah titanium backup will save your apps but be becarefull to just backup user apps + data and not any system app

I would actually recommend he upgrade to 4.0.4 stock rather than flash a custom ROM. He just wants the stock ROM to work... maybe we should start there? There's no reason to automatically push everyone to a custom ROM if they don't decide themselves that the pros/cons work out for them.
And OP, don't pay attention to benchmarks. They mean nothing.

Since there is only one stock image available to download, I assume it's compatible with all versions of the Gnex (I have gsm unlocked) right? and the guide I found lists flashing the bootloader and radio image as optional. What's the difference?

Yes, I'm going for stock 4.0.4. I had CM7 on my old phone, but to be honest the only features I miss are the notification switch toggles and the ability to skip songs while holding the volume buttons. And I can live without those features. ICS is actually pretty complete, and the UI is a pleasure to look at.
Thanks for the help,
Edit: Flashed 4.0.4 and wow is this smooth, no lag whatsoever. The UI feels so much better. 4.0.2 feels broken now.
Flash all files radio kernel bootloader all..

If you have CALEM then it's probably trying to upgrade you to CALG1, which is the update that removes universal search. If you're already on CALG1 it's something new...otherwise it's a few weeks old.

I would flash the stock rooted version of lg1, find herehttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426 .
Also in that post is the apk got the universal search that the update strips out.

Flashing the root-injected LG1 through Odin as mrhaley30705 suggested will preserve all your apps and settings. If you're worried, do a nandroid first on to your external SD card (or pull it to your computer) before you flash, just in case. But you won't lost your apps and settings because it leaves /data untouched.

Yes all ota rootkeeper all it does is hide super user from your carrier during your ota update. As long as you dont delete the titanium back folder on your sd card your fine.
OK cool. Last question, I think. As you can see in my screenshot, all boxes are checked except 1, and it looks to be the most important one. Is it? And Superuser has a survival function, does that one work? Or SuperSU's survival work?

As for TB backups with the free version you can make batch backups and do batch restores....its what I did when going from verizon stock to Hogwart's COLA rom...just make sure app+data is chosen (should be by default) whwn backing up and restoring.
Sent from my R800x using xda app-developers app
Ya u can even restore backups from a nandroid, which is nice.

Ok, so i am confused. I have Superuser installed, with it's option checked for OTA Root Survival. As you can tell from the screenshot, Voodoo OTA Survival seems good to go. I re-installed my Mobile Care app so I can do the OTA update. Here is the issue: I check for updates, it says there is one, so I accept. After the download finishes, It reboots the phone to install the update. After it is "done" it reboots again to turn the phone on, at which time I get an "Error: Update failed" message. Nothing changes.
What am I doing wrong? Does having both Voodoo and Superuser checked for the Survival cause a conflict with the update? Or is something I have installed/removed since rooting preventing the update?
What is your carrier/model of play?
Sent from my R800x using xda app-developers app
Verizon and r800x.

Hmmm...as far as I know verizon pulled the 2.3.4 update because they had some pretty bad glitches with it. Then again I've stayed on 2.3.3 due to stability and more rom choices. I've had mobile care frozen/uninstalled using link2sd for a few months now simply because I found no reason to upgrade to 2.3.4 as there is much more support for 2.3.3, mainly from here lol.
Also if you have removed anything from the 2.3.3 I do not think you will be able to update to 2.3.4. I think it has something to do with system apps not being found...I really am not sure about it though.
Sent from my R800x using xda app-developers app
This can be difficult idk if verizon already patched their ota updates for their devices that prevents ota rootkeeper to be used properly. Idk know what to do in your situation. Cant you use flashtool to upgrade yourself to 2.3.4? Either way your going to lose root one way or another.
Ya I can use flashtool to go to 2.3.4 but it seems its either really difficult or impossible to root it. I have a few system apps still frozen, and I honestly don't remember if I removed any system apps.
Guess I'll just stay on 2.3.3 for now. Not like I'm having issues with it. Just got a wild hair to update for some reason lol.
Well thank u everyone for trying to help!

Rooted Nexus 5X update question

Hi there guys! I own a rooted Nexus 5X. I currently received the OTA update for Nougat and would like to do the update. My question is: how can I do this update without reverting everything to stock first? I don't mind loosing root access, I would just like to update using the OTA update without having to revert everything back to stock and then doing it. Can you guys share a little knowledge here? I have TWRP installed
I think you can maybe sideload the OTA or flash with Flashify or something. It's really recommended to do do a clean install with a factory image and then reroot, especially if you're coming from M. Takes no effort to just back up your SD card with your PC
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Download FlashFire app, go to official page for Nexus 5X OTA packages, download it(around 1.1GB) and flash it as factory image through FlashFire app.
Untick flash recovery.
After that just flash SuperSU zip from twrp and you're rooted.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Using FlashFire Pro, the previously downloaded OTA,(approx. 50 MB), when FlashFire opened, it detected the OTA download and I simply hit the Flash button and it performed flawlessly. Preserved root and recovery.

It didn't work for me either at first, then I checked the "Restore boot and recovery images" option (The "Mount /system read/write" option was already checked, so I left it). Once I checked that option and flashed the OTA update (NRD90S downloaded from Google), it installed just fine.
