Hi. I have rooted EL29 right now and ICS OTA download notification is up on my phone.
I'm guessing I can't just OTA as is.
What is the best way to update? Unroot it to stock EL29 then get OTA then root it afterwards?
I haven't looked at this site since EL29 release so I'm kind of behind about new stuff and forgetting lots of what to do and NOT to do....
I just want well functioned device. I have no intention to try out new ROM or anything.
The reason I rooted was to use tether. That is the only reason.
So what is the best way to go for me?
If you rooted and did nothing but tether you can take the OTA, if you removed system files etc it will fail.
You lose root taking the OTA, No root exploit available. Rooted FF18 is achieved the same way you can get to it from el29 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229
No Data is the same effect as the OTA. There are problems with not wiping the phone. Swype data for example needs to be deleted for swype to work. This is one of many things that OTA users needed to do to make their life work normal.
Well I'm no expert but I flashed my phone back and forth between ICS and GB more times in the past week then I want to think about. I went from EL29 rooted stock to the ICS OTA without problems. If you want to flash to a custom ICS I would suggest using Odin to go back to EL29 rooted and then flash from there. For what I read the risk of bricking occurs when performing a factory reset on ICS OTA.
So I'm on CM9 now and here is what I did.
1) one click Odin to EL29 rooted stock.
2) D/L most recent CM9 build and gapps
3) Flash through CWM
4) Enjoy!

Hi i currently have stock rom but have it rooted. Can someone provide me with a link to update my phone to the new update w/root or let me know what I need to do? Thanks!
Also I am not sure if I am running ext or rfs can some tell me how to figure that out?
A great place to start learning about modding the Epic are the QBKing77 videos on youtube. Just search for them or check out the links to his videos in most of the OPs in the development section. There are a ton of custom roms to play with right now, as well as the stock EI22 Gingerbread rom that came out OTA.
Thanks as I said though I am already rooted but unsure if its ext 4 or RFS I need help figuring that out and then I think I can just odin it from their.
I wish to stay on stock.
Might I suggest taking a look at the MostlyStockROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1339579
You can even go to the "old links" and choose to download the deodexed only first release which is Stock + doedexed + root. Or choose one of the newer releases which has the fixes/features you want.
If you want EI22 Fully Stock then I believe you will need to unroot your existing install and install the OWA. I haven't seen a stock ODIN method but may have missed it.
I see. How do I unroot my phone?
odin back to stock ec05.
ok so then how do I root my phone after going back to stock updating then what?
Or couldn't I just do a factory reset then update?

Once you odin back to stock ec05, it'll do the OTA update onto ei22. That's how I did my phone. Warning, once you odin back, you'll lose all your app and data.
I'm not worried about that I have titanium back up pro. their has got to be a easier way to do this though. Before All I had to do was Odin to the next update and that was it (eco5) now I have to odin back to stock remove root then update and then reroot...... thats a lot of work.
Is their a way to do this without un-rooting my phone?
Also can someone shoot me a link to a tutorial on going back to stock?
Also once root is removed I take it I would have to re root it. (this is ridiculous un root, update, reroot)
So what DO i do to re-root it?

you can just download the file and install it using CWM but i'm 0 for 2 with this method.

Follow the video that babystewie posted. I've used it twice, both succeeding with no issues what so ever. It will allow you to update to GB with root, but will give you a stock version of GB. If you're interested in rooting GB as well, check the video description and there's some more videos.
There are a lot of mostly stock roms or even just a cwm flashable ei22 in the development section. You'll keep root and won't have to go through using odin so many times.
what do you mean a stock version of gingerbread? also I already have clockwork if that helps does it mean i have ti do anything different if i want to keep root?
There really is no completely stock Gingerbread ROMs because we don't have the tar file for the Odin flash. There are several ROMs in the Development thread (where the ROMs are) that are mostly stock. You can simply flash one of those, and if you want the EI22 modem, you can flash the EC05 to EI22 modem updater found in the stickies in development. I recommend you start here:

Hey guys,
So I am on EG30 modem (stock), and I only installed crawlcj's odexed stock rooted ROM.
I got the OTA update notification today morning and I just pressed update and walked away for like 30 minutes, and when I came back there was a yellow triangle with the android figure on the screen and it seemed to be stuck.
So I just held down the power button to turn the phone back on and it seems that the phone is still working fine under EG30 but EK02 was nowhere to be found.
I'd like to get the EK02, do you know why it failed and what I need to do to get the OTA to install correctly?
Thanks in advance
it failed because you are rooted and dont have stock recovery anymore. so if you want to upgrade to EK02 you should just flash the update that is posted already for rooted phones its fast and easy to do.this is the link to get you right to the new modem. after you flash the modem upgrade just chose a rom that has also be upgraded too. now you have the new update its just that easy

I'm going to jump onto this thread to because I'm having the same issue (and have searched this high and low for a solution). I have Crawrj's Stock EG30 Deodexed with Root 3.0/Busybox 1.18.4 on my phone. All I would like to do is to upgrade to EK02 and 2.3.6 (which I'm not sure if it's one and the same), remain stock but retain root. I don't have an SD card in my phone and I don't have clockworkmod (@ewalk4366 the video in your link assumes the upgrader has CWM). Since the OTA failed, I'm at a loss of how to proceed next. It seems I'm missing one thing or another when it comes to trying to upgrade. Any help would be appreciated.
P.S. Sorry for some noob butter but I still don't have all the terminology down correctly, so there may be times where I say modem but I mean rom and visa versa. For the sake of this thread, I think I'm saying what I mean.
just install the new EL13 modem using odin... i hope you are rooted

Thanks for your response but don't I still have the stock recovery? Crawlrj's odexed busybox rooted 3.0 rom didn't have any other recovery mods..
And I'd like to have the completely stock version of the EG30 ROM and the Modem.. So I should flash both? Wouldn't that erase my memory?
Skoksn,
I was using this thread and a few others to solve my problem which I think was similar to yours
[ACS][How to] EVERYTHING EK02 AND EG30 Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread
Step 1)
How to install ACSRecovery5 (EK02 Kernel):

I did these 3 things in this order and I'm now on 2.3.6 and EK02 Modem. Hope this helps.
I am running stock 2.36 with EL29. I would like to be able to tether and install an Internet unthrottle tweak I just saw and keep everything else stock. Can someone suggest the best path to achieve this? I have used the phone stock for about 2-3 months. It does about everything I need in its stock form. I miss these two things from my old Palm Pre.
Also, if I root to achieve this will I have to unroot and remove those tweaks to update to ICS?

I am not familiar with this tweak but if its more than just an app then it shouldn't be kept through such an upgrade. If it works with ICS then just redo it. There is often not much harm in trying to upgrade without wiping everything but you can face many problems with the causes of which being unknown just makes it more heartache than its worth.
Since the zerg exploit no longer works your going to be rooting the phone the same way your going to be rooting ICS. ODIN over a rooted tar for EL29. This can be done now in a no data fashion on your stock phone and you wont lose any contacts settings or apps. Once any changes are made to the system, possibly this tweak trying to allow an over there update can be disastrous.
Right now many of us are running leaked ICS roms that were prerooted and flashed via ODIN or custom recovery on EL29 or other gingerbread roms. If you have really messed with the system and even if you havent it would probably be advisable to backup your contacts and data and flash the phone with the intention of wiping everything on it, wether this is ODINing over the data destroying version of the tar or using Calkulin's format all in custom recovery.
With the tweak out of the question rooting your phone now and getting rooted ICS later is as simple as flashing a tar through ODIN. Sfhub has many "One Click" odin's packaged up ready to go in both no data and regular form. Sometimes final builds are leaked before the OTA but at worst you probably wont have to wait more than 48 hours after ICS is released to get the latest stable build from here.
I'm running Stock EK02 rooted, but I keep getting the notification to update, and everybody knows you can't system update when rooted. So could somebody direct me to the right thread to update, but I won't lose any data? Thanks in advance!

If you want to do it without using CWM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
Use the NO DATA one. This will odin over a stock rooted EL29 which will not erase apps settings or contacts/messages as long as you use the second one no data.
However on a stock rooted system with no modifications you CAN OTA but you would lose root. I wouldnt risk it if your not sure. But i have and its normal to OTA from an EK02 rooted tar to non rooted EL29 but you lose root so thats not interesting anyways. Any removed apps, modified or missing files run a huge risk of bricking.
Lost my root virginity with my E4GT (I are big noob at this stuff) and had some questions.
How do you go back to Sprint's stock EL29 with no CWM or root?
I have rooted EL29 with CWM on my E4GT.
How would the soon to be incoming OTA affect my phone? How would any OTA (possible stability fixes to FF18 and maybe JB) affect root and CWM?
If possible, would I be able to flash official FF18 with root over my EL29 root + CWM providing I wait for ODIN One-Click to be updated with official FF18?
Watch qbking77's how to unroot//unbrick video. Make sure its the latest one and he has links and step by step of what to do. It is very helpful as I am new too. I did this last night.

You could just apply sfhub's FF18 + root instead of waiting for OTA if you want. It is linked in the first post of the Official ICS OTA thread in General.

Wouldn't there some differences between sfhubs release and the official OTA like battery life, bugs, and stuff? I kinda wanna see the differences first =d

Unlikely IMO - changes would be minor if any. One example mentioned in another thread was a different modem. In either case I'm certain we'll get another repack when OTA drops.
For my wife, she won't know the difference - hence I already did the update. I'll probably do mine again once OTA is pulled and repacked with root.

Even if there is, you will not be able to root the OTA. When you take the OTA, OTA it unroots the phone. With there being no root exploit you then have to flash a rooted FF18 tar since your no longer on a firmware with CWM to flash a zip with.
If the FF18 that is OTA happens to be a slightly different revision of FF18 then to get root you will have to wait maybe 24 to 48 hours for someone to come up with a rooted tar or the tar for that revision to leak so you can flash it with mobile odin on a rooted phone.
If the OTA is the same as the leak then to get a rooted FF18 you have to either flash a cwm zip version from whatever rom your on, or flash a rooted tar/one click.
Eitherway all paths to a rooted FF18 do not involve taking the OTA. If you take the OTA the method you will use to get root is one of the methods you would use if you do not OTA.

This is all really good to consider, for anyone who is currently rooted, (like me) looking to go back to pure-stock (like me) to try out the OEM update.
However, I suspect not a big deal, because the purpose for going back to stock to check out the stock ICS update would be to run it for a few days to see how it is, what it's all about, at any rate. I have faith that there will be a rooted FF18 - in fact, isn't there already (sfhub's FF18 + root)?
True story - this is all my fault, the long delay for stock ICS to be released...
I waited months and months and months - since I got the phone, for the stock ICS update to happen. Rumors in March (and even some official press) were that it was just around the corner. Then the GSIII launched. Then some coworkers got the GSIII. Then my buddy got the GSIII. Then Google launches Jellybean... and still no ICS for us. Then my buddy flashes JB on his GSIII, and I'm still running GB... wtf.
So, two nights ago I finally said screw it - wiped my phone, rooted it, and installed the AOKP version of ICS.
So naturally, the very next day, they announce the stock ICS update.
I should have rooted my phone and installed an ICS ROM months ago. Sorry.

One reason that I want to go back stock, and try stock ICS, is for some Exchange account properties that may/must be Sprint exclusive...
You can set a peak/off peak sync schedule - important for me since I get an Email every 2-3 minutes at work when I'm in the office. I can set it to not check Email at all between 8am and 6pm, and then check every 15 minutes during "off peak" hours when I actually want to be notified of Email.
With these custom ROMs (or at least AOKP) you can't - all you can pick is a static frequency - every 15 minutes... all day.
So I'll be happy running the OTA update for a while, I'll root it in a few days, install a custom launcher (why haven't I seen anyone using Go Launcher? I like that one a lot on my GB, I'd use it on ICS if it works), and maybe some day a custom ROM if I can port or use the stock Email settings.
Has anyone else flashed a custom ROM and missed this particular feature?

Couldn't I just use the CWM5 recovery to flash a new ZIP version of the stock kernel?
As it was, I personally went from ICS back to GB by flashing back to the EL26 kernel with CWM5, then restoring my most recent GB nandroid backup prior to upgrading.
I'd think I could use this CWM5 to just flash the stock kernel back without an issue. I think the general rule of thumb
Is there a link to this unrooting video? I'm not finding it, I've clicked through several of the links from the wiki on rooting, "how not to brick", etc.
Video would be helpful to watch, thanks.
I'd also think I could use the one click tool at this point. I used option C to flash CWM to my phone after getting root, option B is designed to remove root access.
