? Just being rooted will not stop the update. In fact most paths will let you take the update and brick your phone if you actually did things like removing system apps. Luckily thats usually a soft brick.
Are you on EL29, some other Gingerbread, one of the 4.0.3/4.0.4 leaks or FF18? There hasnt been a "New OTA" in a month. If your not on FF18 and you want FF18 just odin it.
Fh13 update possibly or just sending out ff18 again.? Hmmmm

it's FF18 update and im on el29. I read more about it and mentioned that adobe flash will not work on ICS build and seen battery drainage from users who updated their phones. I guess I'll wait till the patches roll out if needed. Also can't flash with clockwork recovery installed. It has to be stock recovery.

LOL Flash works fine on ICS, are you sure you were not reading about Jelly Bean? Which still works in just no new installs allowed.
Besides as of today Adobe is supposed to have pulled Flash for ALL phones on all android versions that dont already have it installed
http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/14/psa-adobe-halts-new-installs-of-flash-on-android-as-of-tomorrow/
You can flash FF18 OTA, in clockworkmod, or flash the tar in odin that we had 3 weeks prior to the OTA. I flashed a tar/one click earlier for testing and someone else flashed a zip for it in clockwork mod using a safe recovery.
Taking the OTA means you loose root anyways, not sure why people think they want the OTA. With no root exploit youd have to flash an prerooted one in odin.
I tried to flash it with the original update and looked like it was going to update but after the animation showing as a box with a arrow unpacking the update it threw me into the Android with the exclamation screen. Had to battery pull and safe to say that my phone is safe and not bricked.

Well once again its going to rape you of root and the only way to get root is the same way to get rooted FF18 from where you are. Mind you the update to FF18 is not without its issues. Swype for example you have to delete its data for it to work again. Best bet is to backup your stuff and wipe it.

My understanding is that recovery stays in a separate partition and whatever you do to it does not affect getting an OTA, is that right?
Also, what if my phone is rooted using the Zerg exploit or whatever method, can I still get an OTA?
So basically I think my questions is, what ultimately decides whether my phone can get an OTA, or not?
if you are on stock ROM, you will get it just fine
but you might loose ROOT after it finish the upgrade
if you are on Custom ROM, you wont get OTA
You can get the ota even on a custom ROM. As long as you have the stock recovery.

How would you have a custom ROM with stock recovery? I've never rooted a Samsung phone since this is my first and I'm waiting to root it, so unless Samsung is different I don't see how.

I'm sure within a couple days there will be a custom rom with the new features. that's an assumption but its always been like that on other phones I have had. Hopefully that's the case with this phone also.
I have stock rooted ROM with CWM recovery, is that okay? Or do I have to have a stock recovery?

you will get the notification for the ota, your phone will download it but when it boots into recovery to flash it and its not the stock recovery, it will just give an error and you will probably have to pull the battery to reboot. i did this on the nexus s. if i remember right i never got the ota notififcation again either after it failed.
I know there are methods out there that can flash the entire phone back to stock (kernel, ROM, recovery) but that involves wiping everything. Is there a way to flash back the stock recovery only since I'm already on stock ROM and kernel?
Big thanks...
I wonder where it puts the update after it downloads it. Would be nice to grab it and maybe install without reverting to stock...

you can keep your phone more up to date by flashing roms as opposed to waiting for an OTA. galaxy s4g is still stuck on froyo. Epic 4g just got gingerbread.

If I unrooted my phone... Will I receive the new Ota on my epic 4gntouch???
It depends, what's your exact configuration? You have to be 100% stock EG30, zimage and all (meaning no CWM) to get the OTA and have it work. If you're on EG30 rooted with CWM, then just flash this in CWM. You HAVE to have EG30, though. If you're just rooted with EG30 (not EG31), however, the OTA should work.
Even rooted and custom-rom'd you will get the OTA update.
Im rooted and running ViperROM, with EK02 modem and I get the OTA notification constantly.

Sure you will get the OTA update downloaded to your phone with constant notifications, but if you are not fully stock (can't even have CWM), it will not install properly and you will lose the update. Talking from personal experience when I tried to update via OTA but forgot I had CWM installed... didn't work.
Thank you.
Does this install the ek02 modem as well?

If you are interested in getting the OTA for EG30 you should check out qbking77's youtube channel. He released a video like a day or two ago on how to revert back to EG30 if you are on EG31. He is very very reliable and knows what he is talking about. I always use his videos for my phone. I haven't had any problems because I follow his videos.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdVfbwAJzPU
I believe he recently released a new video on how to unroot/bring back to stock completely to EG30 so you can accept the OTA.
http://youtu.be/h9rmJGlRKik
Yesterday I tried to watch some videos on the YouTube app. Any video I tried, the screen would remain black and the phone would vibrate two times before saying it was not able to play the video and try again. Same issue happened today. I even tried uninstalling the updates, but still nothing. Did a couple reboots just in case, still no luck. I don't recall having this problem before but then again it's been awhile since I've messed with YouTube on my phone. Did some searching, couldn't find a solution.

Nope. I never got an OTA. Factory data wipe formats system, data and cache. OTA actually screws up people's phones. Better to Odin EC05, root and flash a GB ROM, then flash the modem delta.

I meant SOME people's phones dude. Some would not take to the new recovery no matter what that is why I prefer old reliable and I just Odin a prerooted EC05, flash CWM5 and I'm off and running...2 steps. Works every time.

If I'm going to an EI22 ROM, I don't have to Odin back to an older modem to go to the newer one, do I? I just got confused by the recent replies about going to EC05 and then going to EI22. Why downgrade just to upgrade?

We never got a modem.bin for EI22 only a delta from EC05 so yes you have to Odin in EC05 modem for the flashable to work.

Well, when u odin back to ec05 and turn on ur phone, sometimes u get an automatic alert about the update, and sometimes u have to tap on "update android" to make it happen. But u will eventually will see the update. It does take awhile though. Make sure u have a full battery doing this.

Okay, so I've searched and searched, but it's difficult to put into words my question:
I have a rooted Epic 4g touch running Calkulin's E4GT ICS rom v1.5 and Android Version 4.0.3. I don't use the root that much anymore, and the official Ice Cream Sandwich update is gonna be rolled out soon. Is it possible for me to update to the official Ice Cream Sandwich OTA update or do I have to unroot and do some other things before I can do that?
If worst comes to worst, I'll just stick with it being rooted. I just don't want to lose everything just to update to the official rom.
Thanks!

The simple answer is, don't take the OTA but rather wait a day or so until one of the Devs have it rooted and ready to flash.

Simpler answer IMO: Download sfhub's FF18 Odin OC and apply, unless you're waiting for a debloated version to be done. (I believe these are even already available...)

That makes sense to do it that way. Just wondering though. Do you know what would happen if someone tried to do an OTA update in this kind of way? Where you are going from unofficial to official?

I believe if you're on anything other than stock EL29 the OTA would simply failed when you tried to apply it. Nothing major just a minor inconvenience.

The previous answers cover it. I went back to stock on my S 3 for the last official ICS update, but was really a WOT. Don't have to ODIN back to stock unless you want to run on stock.
You would probably see an Odin update (which will install the firmware and and Modem when a simple ROM flash would not) pretty soon after it is OTA'd, and you could use this and not have to have the hassle of going back to stock to get it. If it is not a complete ROM, you will have to be sure you are already updated to the firmware that the OTA would be updating.
