Xperia S becomes an experimental device for AOSP - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

Yes, you read that right. The Xperia S tree will become an experimental playground to investigate possibilities to add more devices to AOSP. This doesn't mean we'll have a fully working build any time soon, but the work is starting on lower levels. This also means Xperia S becomes the first non-Nexus device supported in AOSP.

More info here. Way to go Sony and JBQ and Bin4ry.

I wouldn't necessarily say supported, but it will be the first non-nexus to be merged into AOSP - and because of that maybe we might get a fee more devs here.

TBH I intentionally made it sound like this, for people who think there is no development.

Jean-Baptiste Queru is an official google developer?
EDIT: ok, yes:
Jean-Baptiste M. "JBQ" Queru
Technical Lead, Android Open Source Project, Google.

here is the current progress:
https://android.googlesource.com/device/sony/lt26/+/master

What does this mean for users of the XPS that arn't devs or techically minded?
How is this different from what FXP are doing with CM9, or devs doing their own ROMS?

AOSP is the Original android proyect by google. We can have a pure Android device

Ah, I see. So like the Nexus devices then? No skinning/mods at all included?
Sounds good!

This is great news! Looking forward to the development!
Sendt fra min LT26i med Tapatalk2

AOSP = Android Open Source Project.
It's the one by google.
JBQ wanted ot start this as an experiment, so we (FXP Team) thought we want to support this step and are currently building an AOSP tree for XPS which is mergeable Of course we have some experience on this device which helps us to get this straight forward Hopefully it will be good for other interested developers too!
So hopefully we can see Sony in official AOSP soon, this will be the first NON NEXUS device included to AOSP tree
You can read the google groups postings if you are interested in current process.
For now, its just a start nothing finished here.

Maclaw, wonderfull job!!! but...
No offense.. But where are sources?
I can't find GioRIL source for CM9 (I asked you on your website before) so I made one myself (based on SpicaRIL from Criminal, all credits go to him) and published on github.
I have a 4.0.4 running, greatest part of source is AOSP. It has also CM9 sources in it because of enhanced hardware support. I didn't publish yet, still testing for several days now for bugs (well, only encountered same ones as on Galaxy ICS). It is based on the device part you guys published and I wonder if GalaxyICS team is allowing me to use ir
So I hope you can publish them all, I am very willing to test and contribute where I can. In my opinion that is the basic behind opensource and development
Again, great work! Keep it up!
Only GioRIL is unpublished (forgotten about it), and IDK how did you made it from SpicaRIL, really strange... Also SpicaRIL is made by tom3q, Criminal only fix some things to make it working on ICS at Spica.
And why everyone must to attack me when I'm making something?
And our AOSP is not using CM sources, everything is patched to work armv6.
Sources will be published if it'll work without minor problems, testing right now.

It depends on Samsung, they have to publish the scource codes of the kernel and other hardware components or CM cannot go ahed and start coding.

argh,
really, if paranoid (or at least cm10/11) won't be available soon, that will make me buy these LG Nexus or whatever else Google may show us
Right now, there are no official porters for CM10 for the galaxy note.
Samsung, by not releasing exynos/framework documentation, basically has made it too difficult to develop CM10 for it.
The Note 1 developers basically got fed up and quit until Samsung makes it more practical.
So no CM10 means no PA.
We can hope that a new developer takes the reigns, but as the other poster said: we're in for a long wait.

We have no official CM porters? since when are porters official its either original CM or ported CM
Anyways , atleast im more than 100% sure we WILL get ported cyanogen mod, and most probably PA too.
now ive used ported CM 10 on around 3 of other devices, and take my word if you havent tried it yet, a port totally depends on which device CM it is ported from. E.g. If we get ported cm 10, it will atleast be as much performing as CM 10 on S 3, whose hardware is resembling, because the porters will take as much help as they can from CM10 of S3...
And if CM10 may be ported, why not PA? its not like first CM has to be ported in order to port a PA second
Thats kernel source, not hardware sources, they are two separate things the CM team need both to make a fully working CM rom for this device (and any other modern Samsung device)

Release AOSP means all drivers and proprietary binaries will be open source?
If that so we could try modifying camera drivers to get less compression on photos. It's funny how 12MPx camera makes 1.5-2.5MB photos, just like my old 5MPx nonOS phone :]
Thread moved to Xperia S General section.
I would request the section mods to close it if it's a duplicate. Thanks.
Nice, does anyone reckons this will get a release for everyone with an unlocked bootloader to use? This would stop me buying a Nexus 4.

Just read the article on Sony's blog. The AOSP project do not longer in the hand of JB Queru. Sony dumped the folder on their gitHub.
They also say that they can't release some proprietary binaries, but they work on it.
Technical status of the project
As for the current status and progress of the AOSP on Xperia™ S project, we actually have a lot of things working now. With the code we’re now making available on GitHub, AOSP now boots up, and we have the SD-card, Wi-Fi® and sensors working. And as you can see in the video above, internally we also have audio and the modem running. However, these functions require proprietary binaries that we cannot publish at the time being.
Going forward, the next steps are to replace some of the previously published binaries with source code, and to get Android 4.2 working on Xperia™ S. This can be used as a development platform, and as a base for the work of opening up source code for more modules. For the latest technical status, check out the project on GitHub.

I think it is available, but you need to compile the rom yourself. It's explained on the git page, but still need some skill if you don't know what you're doing.
Could someone please put up a link to their github?
So what does this mean for us, the end users? Getting Jelly Bean sooner? Easier for FXP to finish their CM10?

The problem is the very limited availability of the ZL across countries. I really dont understand this move by Sony. Shouldn't they be releasing both the Z and the ZL in every possible place to increase sales? That and a steamrolling ad campaign is how Samsung has managed to be more ubiquitous than Apple. Now they have dedicated places in Best Buys!! Sony is either plain stupid, or just plain stupid

[discussion] aosp and cm

why dont u people try to build an AOSP rom instead ofa CM....coz probably cm is sumthing that is modifications made to AOSP....and even the touchwiz ui is modified AOSP so if we can have a AOSP build itll probably be easier for us to build these roms..
...if sum one is ready to help me learn about building roms from source ill sure try making CM's and AOKP and paranoid and what not
is better but its based on AOSP.....its like imagine AOSP as a stock rom and CM as a custom rom...wait why imagine..its actually like that....so the basic idea is to improve performance...where CM show up...but whats the base CM uses??...its AOSP....so if we have a perfect AOSP which is obv possible...coz Samsung wouldn't be able to build TouchWiz withouta base...for obv reasons...so why not try building an AOSP first and then continuing with CM
do u even know whatcha sayin?
tl;dr
Here's some math:
No sources = no base
No base = no sources
No sources = no cm
No cm = no aosp
So unless you try to find a way to make those proprietary sources available then I'd suggest doing some research.
Also even if you tried you'll fail, we have the best devs for sgy working hard for that goal and we're honestly not making good progress. Well except for percy and his cm9 and psycho's cm7 but still a long way from "stable as stock".
This post is in compliance with the national potato safety regulation.

My information might not be correct. A friend of mine told me this.
See cm is made by aftermarket developers keeping in mind that it can support lot of different phones.
On the other hand aosp was made for nexus phones so they don't give a damn that it works on other phones or not. They are just selfish lol.
So building pure aosp is tougher compared to cm. Cm has modifications on aosp to support different phones.

Naman...we haven't tried making AOSP yet so we cant just confirm this and it cant be that it was made for nexus only coz its an open source project so they must have probably kept in mind that many dev's will try to have it on different devices ..... the Gingerbread that our SGY uses is nothing but a custom rom of the aosp which we call as stock....
for obv reasons...samsung would not have made their own android os right...they have used google sources....the point is...the time dev's have spent on making CM if would have been focused on AOSP we might just have a build close enough to psycho's work!
and what ive learned or i might be wrong in this that psycho used aosp's sources for the fixes....Maybe wrong about this...i just read it somewhere here!.....and as our device has the largest community of awesome dev's why not we try the AOSP thing out??
we cant just conclude without trying...can we??......some months back people were like we wont have a CM....we have a working CM7 and CM9 which are working pretty fine except for the driver bugs....same way,we might just end up having an AOSP...
another hope to Young GT-S6310. need a great developers to make it true

Maybe you should see this. www.cyanogenmod.org/about
And also about android opensource project. Google gives aosp source to all manufacturers as part of aosp allience/programme which they further modify. And first phone running android was not nexus to say that they don't give damn about other devices. And the number of devices running CM is still very low.

man.. they are just stock based roms.. everyone is upgrading these days, android 4.3 has been released and you are still on 2.3.6. Which makes you guys really outdated..
Kernel? yeah there are huge number of kernels here but if you notice that most of em have same features See other phones like nexus 4. They have whats called "real" kernel development.
Pico which is 1k more expensive is 100 times better than this phone and you also know it. Why not buy that? I sold my Y for 3.5k and another 3k can buy you a arm7 phone. Which wont get outdated for another year atleast..
