Getting an S3 soon. Any trips/tricks/warnings? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

So I am going to buy an S3 soon. Does anyone have any tips or tricks that I should know about the phone before I buy?

Highly suggest enabling "Power savings" in the settings. This will help battery life and doesn't make the phone as hot to the touch. Other than that, invest in a great case. You will love the phone!

Id highly recommend not enabling power save mode. I don't feel it's worth the performance hit. I get great battery life still and the phone has never been hot to touch for me.

And if you decide to root/rom backup your IMEI information as well prior to doing that.
If you're not a flashoholic, Google Wallet fix is a nice little feature.
Don't buy a case that has a metal back(blocks NFC)
Before buying ALWAYS check Radio Shack pricing(usually they are ~$50 cheaper than AT&T store directly)

I would suggest reading these forums regularly, especially if you plan on modding your phone. Little things can screw stuff up and you dont want to be left helpless . Lot of interesting stuff if you browse other posts and threads... Learn as you go .
In general the phone is great. Maybe some things are missing comparing to the international version but nothing major.

Yes don't go to att store go to radio shack picked up mine for 150$

Install CM10 or AOKP.

Get a good case + screen protector.

Walk outside with one before you buy. Make sure you can live with the screen.

definitely don't go to at&t store, the shack hooked up mines for under 100!
from MIB galaxy SIII

Check amazon, wirefly, bestbuy, and radioshack. Compare the prices and look for specials sometimes bestbuy gives free stuff with the phone exclusively like a case or Screen protector.

Find someone who needs to make quota and you can pick one up for around $100-$150, depending on your social skills, and might be able to pick up some accessories near cost. The Samsung flip cases are pretty legit. They replace the back cover.
Get the Invisible Shield HD for the screen, and then get a skin/maximum coverage for the rest if you don't plan on using a case. The HD is so much nicer than the original Invisible Shield. The texture is smoother so it feels more like glass and I've noticed that it's easier to use when it's humid than the original model as well.

I dont know who's gonna let you walk outside with one (makes me laugh when I picture some one saying "I just want to see it in the sunlight ").

Lol no kidding.
If you have a friend with one, just ask them to take it out in the sun. Yes it irks me to have a crappy screen in the sun, but it's just a matter of downloading a brightness app or setting it to auto before you go out (if it isn't already). Minor annoyances for arguably the best phone on the market. You won't be disappointed.

This is the first phone I've ever set auto brightness to on and left it on. It does a great job figuring it out. I haven't had any direct sunlight problems.
As for OP, the phone will get warm under heavy usage. I usually use GPS and bluetooth at the same time while I'm in the car and if my phone wasn't in a case, I'm sure I wouldn't be able to pick it up. Also, keep a charger handy whenever you go, especially in the afternoons. I charge my phone overnight but by 1pm, I'm down to 50% battery and need a little boost.

if you do get a case (and you should) I would strongly recommend otterbox.

Caps are appropriate imo, back up that imei if you plan to do any flashing at all, period.
Also, make a nandroid, having one saved me a ton of grief during my recent "nuked my imei, have no imei backup, omg what do I do" adventures. Restoring the nandroid backup didn't recover my imei, but it did help me on the path to getting back to a working phone ;\

Before you do that, it's probably a good idea to take it apart and find out which size connector cable your screen has. The Evo two types, a "small" and a "big" one.
I'm posting these amazon links for reference about the flex cable size, I am 100% sure you can get these for cheaper elsewhere...
A "big" one: http://www.amazon.com/ORIGINAL-Display-Screen-Sprint-HTC/dp/B004RDGTJ2/ref=pd_sim_e_7
A "small" one: http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Evo-Replacement-LCD-Screen/dp/B00427SHXO
Again, there are surely places where you can get these for cheaper, but the amazon links do have photos of the items so you can see the difference between the two flex connector sizes.

Do your research, ask many Others I have helped on this forum with repairs. Yur best bet is to spend the extra money and buy it preassembled. I had for sale screens with the digitizers already attached directly from htc. Wth the plastic stil on the front. Many members purchased from me but at the moment I'm sold out. Save yourself ANY little or big headaches, spend the extra few dollars and buy it all in one piece. Maybe a few of my friends or customers might chime in...good luck

Considering Gnex

I'm coming from an LG revolution on Verizon, ill admit it's plagued with issues. The main reason I liked it was locking in my unlimited 4g data, and it handles wifi tether somewhat well. Anyway
Seeing prices on an off contract Verizon GN ($200-300) makes me consider buying one outright to replace. Doesn't help my revolution has a crack in the glass (not screen). Are there any considerations I should make beyond what I find reading out of reviews and going by user experiences? I'm so far happy with all that I'm seeing, and the caveats aren't big for me, such as omitting Google wallet and it having a pentile display. Ill bet it's miles ahead of my revolution (plain LCD 800x480). I have the extended battery for my revolution and will most likely soon after buying a GN go for the same, but I want to also hear from the xda community. Thanks all in advance.

Get the Gnex in your life... you will probably **** your pants and sit in it for two days out of joy... I know I did.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Do it. Seriously. Its a great time to be holding a gnex.
But definitely get some form of screen protection immediately. Preferably a case of some kind, as this phone is like a wet bar of soap.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Nah. I used to use the dual incipio case, but the slimness just cannot be covered up! Just slap a screen protector and you're golden... unless you're really clumsy. But yes, get the GNex, flash Jelly Bean, and you will be convulsing on the ground struck by awesomeness (if that makes sense? )
I just got my gnex from eBay. And this phone is so awesome! I am coming from a epic touch 4g where the phone specs should be a slight wash but I am digging this phone sooooo much more

This phone pwns!!
So much development too.
The phone is great. A few days with it and you'll wonder how you ever lived with a smaller screen.
The stock experience isn't bad, but unlocking the boot loader and rooting couldn't be easier so you'll be up and running with new Roms all the time.
I'm quite enjoying mine, but it is slick and has a tendency to want to slide out of your hand. Get a case and an extended battery.
It does get warm near the top when browsing the net but its a big deal. Anyway off to work I go, get the damn phone you'll have no regrets.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Thanks all for the support! Forgot just how free and open nexus devices are. Is there a particular extended battery and case go for? I noticed an off brand 3800mah with cover (same company also makes suitable cases) for $20, didn't look like a half bad company at least. I know batteries can be hit or miss. Also, does the (insert power control widget w/wifi tether button) trick still work for that? Atm I use wifi tether and by sheer luck it works in AP mode, vs adhoc, which I much prefer. Also any particular big pros to rooting besides jellybean? I only really rooted my revolution to remove bloat, extend battery and use wifi tether. Afaik with the nexus, there's no particular bloat being vanilla android, battery is more solid than my phone, and if that tether trick works then no root needed for that with what I'm reading.

DON'T BUY SKETCHY BATTERIES!!!
Buy only genuine Samsung extended battery or from a somewhat legit company, like Mugen power.
Sketchy batteries present a high risk of breaking your phone.

I've seen this and reviews a while back but it's not my cup of tea... Though I can say that for anyone other than past loyal customers $30 is probably too high a price. Cost of materials can't be more than $5-$10. I'm really not trying to be **** either just stating my 2¢

yeah exactly. i couldn't agree more @
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
The product isn't worth $30 but they have a patent pending on it. I own one and i have to say, i love using it. I swapped back to my old Incipio Sillicrylic because I was in an environment that need the extra cover. After I got home, i swapped back to the Flygrip right away. I like that it doesn't bulge my phone up all around and i can touch every part of the screen without feeling that i'll slip the phone through my hands and end up in mud/water/concrete. It took me a while to get used to putting my fingers through it. in the end, i'm satisfied.
It's a little steep in price, but I was more than willing to pay for it and might buy another since mine is just slightly large. It is really useful and I get so many comments on it. Plus it's really cool that it doubles as a stand in both landcape and portrait modes. My only regret is that it definitely means it will be inconvenient to do the wireless charging hack and I think it might interfere with Google wallet. In the wireless charging hack the phone must sit flush with the charging pad and it may be the same with using Google wallet to pay via PayPass. I'm still looking into that last one.
yeah that's my only complaint as well and if it interferes with S Beam, etc

WOW....... Price is ridiculous. I usually pay for an over priced item now and then for something I am interested in but the price on the FlyGrip is really pushing it. Most defiantly passing on this product!

the double sided tape is from 3M so it should stick no problem unless the outer shell is soft. but that's going to be pretty thick attaching the flygrip to it. i'm using the flygrip solo and it feels very secure. i haven't dropped my phone(knock on wood).

i always wait until the remorse period is over to root. Just in case. It usually takes that long for stock firmware to show up anyways.
I Odin'd MDL back and everything went back to stock. I got my warranty back and they exchanged it. I doubt it because lg screens are a bit complicated and ppl are scared to attempt it. However there are how tos on YouTube you can follow. I would go with the link I gave since the two pieces are attached. With the separate piece you might have to loca the glass to the LCD so u don't get an air bubble in the middle or dust in the screen after time. My first time fixing my Note I didn't use no loca since none of the vids instructed to do so. Worst experience ever, thank god I was able to take it apart and redo it.

The phone kit is the best thing has everything you need.http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=13180768&retainProdsInSession=1&znt_campaign=Category_CMS&znt_source=CAT&znt_medium=RSCOM&znt_content=CT2032236 And use a hair drier or heat gun to get the screen off. DO NOT touch the battery if it gets poked or bent out of shape a little it will go bad very quickly. Obviously unplug it from the board but thats it, and its only 2 connections to get the screen off the main board. Everything is pretty easy once you get inside. I watched a video and that was a huge help.

For 80 bucks would you recommend just the digitizer or the bundled glass and digitizer? I'm assuming the two piece together is the better deal and less work correct? Just trying to make it easier for the op lol

Definitely get with the glass. If you get a fingerprint or dust under the whole thing wont work.

Get both. All things being equal, your best bet is to replace both. Since screen and digitizer are so close together on this phone a break like you got probably means both are damaged anyway.
