Just wondering if you guys have a Paranoid Android ROM. I'm looking to buy the Gnex or the S3 but I'm wondering about that.
Nexus S. (GSM i9020a)
Paranoid (1.97a - 4.1.1)
Air Kernel (Week 182 - Voodoo)
SmartassV2 (1000/200)
Deep Idle (On - Deadline)
Black Exodus (Inverted apps)
Yes we do. it's in the Original Development section. But it's still really buggy. if you're looking to upgrade from a Nexus phone...i'd suggest going the same route with the Nexus series. Although, our S3 is also full of great devs.

Ah, I'm geared to the Gnex right now. The development in the S3 doesn't seem the same. Maybe I'm just not used to TW.

I have both devices and even though development isnt as big as the nexus you got to think the gs3 just came out a little while ago give it some time. The s3 is faster and with all the features i find myself reverting back to it. But then again it is your choice and if u are really into flashing a **** load of roms the gnex is where its at.

I see Development in the Gnex forums as a bunch of kangs with tiny different not really noticeable changes... Just different names, colors and such lol. Kernel and mods though yes, definitely looks like a whole much more capability there. We have reports of a few other devs that are thinking about jumping ship to our side with the advanced hardware and such, and Qualcomm releasing drivers and code, I see development just beginning for us.

I might just wait for the newest Nexus..... Google updates right away and the quickest growing development (in my opinion). I just don't really see the S3 getting development comparable with the Gnex let alone the next Nexus.

Definitely an option.
I'm currently job searching so by the time I land something in a few months after I'll have a enough. (I want to have double the price for any if the phone for savings). Man, it is hard to get a first job. Haha.

Then why did you even include the S3 into consideration?
Hardware wise...the S3 > the GNex

I was thinking about the massive hardware.
And I was thinking Paranoid Android might work on the WIND SGS3.

Been running the PA ROM since release (8/10) and i think it's great.
There are definitely some bugs but i would say half of them are due to the early nature of CM10 and JB and not the PA ROM itself. most of the tablet/phablet/hybrid features work great and is definitely daily driver worthy IMO
Here are some of the bugs i noticed:
1. Sometimes after a configuration change, the system asks me for a SIM unlock code. At first i was afraid i lost my IMEI but after i clicked dismiss, it works fine (this only happened a few times after initial flash but hasn't happened since)
2. Wifi toggle in tablet mode seems broken. People have said a re-DL/re-flash fixes but i prefer phablet mode anyway
3. Battery percentage in tablet mode doesn't show when enabled
4. Sometimes after switching modes, my screen goes black. After a manual soft reset (hold down power for like 10 sec), boots up fine in new mode. The "sleep-of-death" will also happen to me randomly sometimes
dig through the dev thread though. some others have reported bugs like unable to send texts/make calls or other potential deal-breakers but none of these happen to me. if you do jump ship, flash with TWRP (almost perfect results from what i can tell using TWRP instead of CWM, with no reported incidents of IMEI loss)
This is in addition to the normal bugs you will find in the CM10 nightlies. I've read that a lot of those bugs have been addressed in more recent nightly builds so hopefully we get an updated ROM soon!
Overall i am LOVING PA

Hi guys,
I know that a lot of users or kernel developers using their SGS like CM7 and/or MIUI on their phone
but the high "battery drain" due to not fully implemented powersaving features [e.g. battery usage of 1-2% per hour in idle and very high consumption during data usage]
and some missing features in the CM7 kernel can be sometimes quite annoying for users that need all or most features of the phone
teamhacksung | cmsgsteam back in April (JVB at that time) had made an attempt to port the Kernel from Samsung's GB sources to get it working with CM7
there were several issues with stability - e.g. rebooting of the phone when activating WIFI, the RIL instability (due to samsung's proprietary RIL/modem driver), don't know about access to the external sd; to only name a few ...
so the majority decided to go the other way around - step by step porting features from the Samsung GB source to the Nexus S port of the SGS
at least the 3 mentioned
can be sort of fixed
- wifi instability (perhaps by force-compiling it via -Os)
- samsung's RIL driver (creating a prebuilt modemctl driver with -Os and stock setting and then using that in optimized kernels; meanwhile the new RIL is used in CM7)
- external SD access (might work with the kernel, the framework might need changes; or the kernel might need some changes that were introduced in the existing CM7 kernel, e.g. 2 luns in devs.c and some changes to the android gadget driver if that's enough)
I used the newer kernel-source from JVH (where deep idle powersaving mode [allowing several days of standby] seems to be working on stock roms and it being enabled in the config)
added the modifications to make it work on CM7 and added some of the newer commits to reflect recent CM7 changes
prerequisites to run it are:
- a Gingerbread bootloader (according to source needed for Deep Idle to work)
- a SGS (GT-i9000), since for the other phones captivate, vibrant there aren't any GB bootloaders yet
- lots of time, commitment and some knowledge to test it & hack on the source
the source can be found in my repo:
jvh_cm7_merge
or if someone feels like hacking on cpuidle/didle stuff on the currently used CM7 kernel:
cpuidle branch
(work mainly done by GuiperPT here; recent didle/cpuidle changes in cm7 kernel were committed/done by coolya (?))
I hope additional devs can be found to attempt to get this kernel working
Thank you for reading this post !
Love the enthusiasm of this guy!

EDIT: Don't wanna press you, but can you open a twitter account auto-updated by github to follow all your works? I really like the way teamhacksung adopted
I really love CM7 on my SGS, and I would love to use the phone in the most complete way. So I think a ported Samsung Gingerbread kernel would be a fantastic idea.
Hope some of the kernel developers (maybe hardcore, i have always loved his Speedmod kernel) will spent some time on this.
Had this idea a while back (but would have no idea how to make it) - would this be for CM7/MIUI or GB firmwares? Cheers
Wow. What timing. I have been using CM7 for about 2 months now and I was just thinking that maybe it was time to pop a JVP GB build on to see how it feels. Some CM7 features I would miss for sure, but it seems to me that the speed gap has closed, and battery life on CM7 leaves me wanting (particularly in use, idle consumption has come a long way) and doesn't seem to have any positive prospects. No fault of the devs, who have put an amazing amount of work and progress into it, just a fact.
I was just cruising around to see what was what in the land of customized GB ROM's and stumbled upon this! Wouldn't this rock the casbah!
You rock, Zach! This thread should be sticky / kept alive! And +1 for opening a Twitter account linked to your git repo!

Funny. I've been thinking the exact same thing. Popped JVP onto my brothers newly acquired SGS and I'm going to monitor it over the coming weeks to see how it performs. I love everything about CM7 except the idle battery usage and perhaps the battery usage during 3G. Damn you Samsung!!!!
EDIT: I wholeheartedly approve of this thread. Although I cannot contribute in any way due to no programming skills whatsoever, I hope some progress can be made

Same for me, miss features in both CM7 and MIUI but the battery life kicked me away. I'm on F1 S2 JVP room now with beautiful UI from galaxy S2, great battery life and stable, been using for few days without any FCs. But Im still looking forward for every updates of CM7 and MIUI

they're probably busy with SGSII
and the issue is that GB bootloaders are only available on the SGS right now (and might only be available to the SGS in the future)
so it's hard for atinm, unhelpful and other coders with e.g. captivate, vibrant, etc. to work it
if I were in their position I wouldn't risk irreversibly bricking my device by flashing a SGS (!) bootloader on a non-SGS device
besides that most of the work would have to be started sort of from scratch for the other devices
so in each way it's a win-lose, you never get a win-win for all :\
(would be easier if samsung provided at least GB bootloaders for each device)

Yeah..you are right...but even if they would release the bootloaders for vibrant or cappy, it would still not be implemented in cm7 cuz its not cm7 protocol...i think.
But still...you glitch fugu guy(complicated name) and volunteers should get started on this ... i would help if i knew anything more advanced than instaling windows... lol.

I'm fairly new to android but went ahead and unlocked and stuff to install stock 4.0.2 ahead of my phone receiving the update. I'm growing frustrated with some lag and things here and there so I think its time I install a custom rom. I'm currently running stock 4.0.2 unlocked GSM version (yakju). Can anyone give me a good recommendation since there's so many to choose from?

Yep. The AOKP ROM is about as flawless as it gets. Even full stable CM7 ROMs on my previous phones were not as good as this. And the way Romanbb designed the settings toggles within the notification drop down is absolutely perfect, IMO.

I'm currently using bigxie's rom and its really good - smooth and with great added features.
I might try the AOKP one though as it does seem to be favoured by quite a few people !
Its easy to flash the new roms so why not just flash one, try for a day , then flash another ? Everyone has their personal likes/dislikes anyway.......
The only way to truely know is to try them all yourself but for me after doing that I am stuck with AOKP and APEX kernel. Great match.
Only thing stopping me from using AOKP is the pink unicorn - NO THANKS!!
bigxie's ROM does it for me personally, but ultimately you have to try them for yourself.

This is a great combo. I too was a little disheartened by the interface lag the gnex had on stock, but after I flashed this combo I was MUCH happier. My phone is so buterryyyyyy now and I love it.
GummyNex. AOKP has too many mods for me. I want as close to stock as possible but still have that customized feel.

A lot of UI options in the room. Like add remove and change order and color of the on screen white nav keys! For me this rom was a must have and I highly recommend it!
I'm using FOXHOUND. Only had my phone for 2 days now. I may try aokp as I have been hearing good things about it.

lol Yeah, I wasn't a fan of the pink unicorn boot animation either, but it is easy to use custom boot animations.

Again, for those of you happy using AOKP: I am trying to figure out whether to jump to the GNex yet. I am on an old HTC Incredible, but frankly, it gets the job done and I get better than 24 hours battery life yet. I remember the bad old days when my batt life sucked & I was always flashing new SW to make my phone work, and I don't feel like going back to that. I will be on the Verizon CDMA / LTE version. If I flash AOKP + Franco:
1. Will most of my apps run smoothly / not FCing all the time?
2. Will I be able to get 12-14 hours of light usage from the phone?
Not looking for guarantees, just your personal opinion if you're running this setup.
Thx in advance!

1) The only thing I ever got a FC on was when I was using LauncherPro Calendar widget. Now that I'm using the Nova launcher I don't remember seeing a force close.
2) 12-14 hours should be easily doable. With my current config I'm at ~ 79% in almost 6hrs with 1h10m screen on time.
AOKP definitely at the moment, smooth, more features than any thing else ive tried. Combined with Nova launcher there aint much it can't do.
Load a new boot image though LOL.
Definitely AOKP. I don't know about smoothness (I thought the Gnex was smooth already) but I absolutely love the added control. To be honest though, it was the notification toggles that got me (and admittedly cause me to root). The unicorn was a surprise, but a quick bootanimation flash was all that was necessary.
Curious about the franco kernel...
Why does everyone rag on the Unicorn ? Cause it's pink ?
First time Samsung user coming from EVO 3D. What are your recommendations for ROM's and kernels? And is CWM favored over stock recovery? I guess i will try them all tomorrow. Thanks in advance
-CWM Is yes the best and most used recoveries. (Are there even other ones, lol?)
-I recommend AOKP (Android Open Kang Project) Milestone 3 or the latest nightly, you can find these in the Android development section of the GNex.
-For kernels, they all act differently for everyone. Some people are great with franco kernels, and trinity, and james bond, and leankernel, just gotta try them all really . For example I'm getting the same if not worse battery with franco, but I might try James Bond kernels, (they are great they seem.) But they are all good in terms of performance.
Good Luck on the new GNexus it's a hell of a phone
I use GummyNex, much more stable and closer to stock than AOKP. I'm also using Franco's 18.2 nightly and get excellent battery life (around 10 hours). Just try everything out there till you find what works for you.
Just make sure you go to the 'CDMA Galaxy Nexus Android Development' for your ROMs. I learned that the hard way...

AOKP is extremely stable and offers a ton of options. Latest build is sick and allows you to remove the bottom softkeys in the power menu so you can use anything full screen and bring the buttons back with the power menu again...
welcome aboard! I just switched from Sprint and was rockin a epic Touch 4G (great phone) and have had this phone in my hand for a week now. Extremely easy to unlock, download and install the toolkit. It's a stickie in the develpment thread. the only mistake I made was not running the stock software for a few days to get a feel for it before flashing something new. I would flash a couple roms and see what they are about, then settle on one.
I'd also like to the recommend aokp which is a very stable rom. I use the stock kernel and don't really need any custom one .

eh, the download link goes directly to the AOKP site: http://forum.aokp.co/ which lists the latest build. People still talk about the latest nightly, the only thing that isnt updated quickly is the title of the thread
I am no fan of nightlies and only look for stable versions. Currently, I run stock 4.0.4 but am looking into flashing a stable ROM and kernel. I tried AOKP nightly and a franco kernel nightly but want a stable release.
I've heard a lot of good things about AOKP Milestone 4 and Franco's Milestone 2 kernel, but what do you think? I'd like CM9, but there are only nightlies released so far.
What ROM and kernel work best for you that aren't nightly builds, i.e "stables" or "milestones?"
I personally haven't seen ANY problems on the newest AOKP.
I think the buglist on 32 is literally down to 2 things that people have found...
Pressing "reset navbar" causes a SystemUI FC loop.
Fix: Don't press it? All it does is return your navbar back to stock settings. You can do this manually in 5 quick button presses if you really wanted to anyway.
Torch will enable...but not disable...when used from the "power menu" (the menu that pops up when you hold power.
Fix: Remove torch option from power menu...use toggles instead. Or, toggle "off" with the status-bar toggle if you wish.
You see, I don't like nightly builds or builds which are updated every second day.
That's the thing about nightlies. One fix for one bug may break another feature and fixing that might break a third feature. I have had previous experiences with nightlies on my old Nexus One and therefore I want to have a stable release.
I appreciate your input and it's been noted. If many people happen to recommend the nightly builds I might just try them.
I love this phone and have nothing to complain about. It's a huge step up from the N1.
While that may remain true...
And I appreciate the fact that you're a purist...
I'm generally THE bug-finder for AOKP builds.
The devs even seem to take note of my posts...and have PM'ed me a few times asking for logs/details/tests/etc.
Clean flashing (obviously) and I haven't found anything in the last couple days.
Also, while these "builds" are technically "nightlies" in that they're pulled for us at random, it seems...
They also don't occur every night (as you may be well aware) so if the daily flashing drives you away...it'll be more like weekly with AOKP if you want to stay up-to-date.
Gosh.
I never ever recommend a rom to people asking. Generally just tell 'em to "find your zen" on your own...
But I just wanted to emphasize the stability here.
Edit:
Oh, and builds 31/32 are prequels to another Milestone build. So if you don't find something you like by then...Milestone 5 is always a possibility.
I don't know if there will be a 33 first...
But Roman mentioned we're fast-approaching one.

Well that's not entirely true, and I guess I somehow worded it wrong. I want a ROM that's stable, kinda lika OTA-stable but anything near a stable OTA is fine by me. The part where it "just works" it not really 100% accurate as I wouldn't choose android as my OS if I wanted stuff to "just work".
Some customization has to be done for me, whether it's homescreen editing or overclocking and whatnot.
Either I worded it wrong or you misunderstood, but I consider the first option since I'm not speaking English natively.

We honestly need to ban "what's the best rom" topics...
I've decided I want to run a nightly now, after spending hours and hours of checking ROMs, and I think it's safe to say I'll choose between either CM9 and AOKP.
Then it comes down to what kernel to use.
I am really sorry for being such a pain in the rear for you guys.

He he!!
I'm using Aokp 32 and Franco 135. Have had no issues, reboots or fCs. Just ensured not to do the 2 things mentioned above.
I absolutely love it. Couldn't be better.

Okay, I've flashed franco 135 and AOKP 32. Feels alright so far.

My preferences in order of quality, stability and speed.
LiquidSmooth 1.2 (default imo kernel)
BAMF 1.2
Foxhound 0.4
AOKP m4
Liquidsmooth 1.25 + Trinity - Bomb Proof.
May test out a new rom soon but liquid has everything I need so dont see a reason to switch expect the fact to see what other roms has to offer. Still waiting on CM9 to get few more features.
I only use the stable Rooms/Kernels myself. I been using AOKP build 32 and used Tuna-faux 123 and had no issues or problems. I am noe using the stable version of Franco's Kernel. And again, no issues. I used to always use regular CM but after using AOKP I just keep using it. I know there's all kinds of roms built off of AOKP as others. But I just use the stock versions of ROMS. Like stock CM9 or AOKP and not a ROM built off of it.
There's a lot of great choices out there. Find what works best for you and your device.

AOKP 32 with Latest Stable Lean Kernel with Interactivex governor = Best battery and performance!
Honestly I'm loving AOKP M3 and Leankernel 3.0.0. I had battery issues with francos and stuck with it till about #13, then switched to lean and never looked back. My battery life has improved dramatically and performance is still no problem
With regard to AOKP's stability, I used to stay up to date with it but I think I might just start looking for the milestones, mostly because I think I don't end up using the vast majority of features they introduce with every build. I also got hit with that systemui bug in 32 and ended up just reverting to 31 before the devs posted a workaround because it made the phone unusable. I think I got a little comfy assuming that the beta line was generally stable.
I've been thinking of trying Liquidsmooth when they release the newer 1.3, which based on the chatter in its thread sounds like it will be soon.
As far as kernels go, I think leankernel is the way to go if you're a fan of stable releases. The stable branch probably sees an update about once a week with new features. I don't use franco's kernel mostly because the milestone releases are so far and few between, but apparently he's working with the liquid team for optimizing their rom, so maybe franco M3 and liquid 1.3 will be a nice combo to settle into when those hit.

you'll have to go to rootzwiki for it ... try GLaDOS kernel too while you're there i swear by it (after trying them all)
... at least for me imo CM9 + GLaDOS are my picks i always come back to them every time (so far)
while it's only $100 at best buy. How's the development for this one (AT&T)? It looks like 9/10 of the ROMs have been abandoned and not updated for a month or more, is there some reason for this?
Anyway, if I get the SGSIII I will NEED
GPS that locks within 30 seconds, I get lost A LOT.
Working audio (no skipping or weird issues) from the 3.5mm connector
stable and doesn't crash or go really slow
Camera working enough to at least take clear pictures quickly
Do any ROMs do this currently?
Also a couple other questions. What can I expect for battery life, does it last a whole day with moderately heavy use? Any known issues that just come with the device and can't be/aren't currently fixed, like crapple's camera flare or my Infuse's terrible GPS (that got fixed with a relaunch and silent recall)?
Wtf. Almost every cm10 or aokp rom has been updated nightly. Most touchwiz roms don't get updated since they are close to being finished since there are no bugs on stock roms.
If you want it to work good run touchwiz roms. With battery I get 15 to 25 hours and about 4 hours on screen time which is pretty heavy use. As for bugs none I know of on stock. Everything works flawlessly.

you can use aokp, Its great!
While the International version has a ton of roms, the I747 has a good amount of solid builds. You can have your choice of stock ics touchwiz (ariel), jelly bean touchwiz leaks (aristodemos, serenity) and aosp jellybean hybrids (aokp, liquid smooth, paranoid android). All work perfectly with GPS locking on within 15 seconds max. Never had a problem.

100$ outright or under contract? BB canada is 0$ on our crappy 3 year plan
Yea.... a lot of the TouchWiz ICS ROM's haven't had updates lately because there isn't really a whole lot for them to do with the ROM, since it was pretty much complete to begin with. Just about all they really did on them is remove bloat, add custom themes, and tweak some stuff here and there. The TouchWiz JB ROM's still get updated fairly regularly, since there are still tweaks to be made here and there, and things to be updated as new leaks arise. But stuff like Cyanogenmod and the different ROM's built off of it are updated daily or every other day or two.
Been using CM10 nightly and now on M2 stable build. I use it as daily driver and don't have any issues. You won't be disappointed OP
I'll give my two cents as I've had this phone for bout 4 days now and I am coming of iOS.
I am a fairly techy user. I I run Linux servers for fun. I am but never got jntk android because I figured I'd play with the phone more than use it and it would end up being broken half the time.
Immediately after getting it I rooted it and flashed the rom and have already tried CM10, two TW ROMs and whatever else I could get my hand on.
Ultimately for stability purposes I'm still on stock. The phone is really good in terms of use, and but be prepared to know that ROMing it is still an experimental thing and if you want it to work flawlessly, and you'll most probably sitting on stock (which is not a bad thing)

not to hijack the thread..
but is Ariel the ATT equal of CleanRom for verizon?
I'm on SlimBean but battery isn't stellar... so going to try my luck at a touchwiz rom.
I have a international gs3 9300 and an ATT gs3 and I run my Att gs3 as my main phone because tasks aokp jellybean ROM is hands down the best ROM built for either phone. The 9300 has many more roms than the i747. I bought the 9300 for the increased development and I learned the expensive way that quality beats quantity in the ROM department. Get the Att gs3 and root and flash tasks aokp and I guarantee you will be very happy.
I hope you got the phone today and I hope you enjoy it. Personally, I'm so satisfied with the stock rooted ROM that I've almost kicked my flashing addiction.
Almost.

You can look under the original development page for some good stable roms like SlimBean, PA, and Aokp. All function well enough to be a DD.

I agree with Jonny here... I too am running JB AOKP and everything works perfect. Task650 is always adding new commits and is constantly updating the ROM. Another point to consider... every phone is NOT created equal. The same ROM and kernel can run better/worse on one SGS3 to the next. You have to flash and try a ROM out to see how it runs for you because it won't be the same on another phone of the same model. Besides, what's stopping YOU from going through the development area and reading the threads like the rest of us have to do to learn what we need to? First suggestion.... don't be lazy and expect others to spoon feed you answers because you WILL receive backlash and grief. Do yourself a favor and SEARCH and READ anything and everything you feel is pertinent to your query. Spare yourself the frustration. This is just a word to the wise. No disrespect intended.

The GPS and Navigation is AMAZING on any Android phone.
Their Music app could use some work, however i do use the app PlayerPro
TouchWiz is pretty stable but i find gets slower with time and i think thats due to the fact that its running ICS. I would recommend flashing a custom ROM such as CM10 for JB which makes the OS run ALOT smoother.
The stock camera is also very good with alot of features.
Hopes this helps.
