How can I delete the stock APN in ICS? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hey guys, I use straight talk on this phone and thus i use a different APN than the stock T-Mobile one.
I have created that and it works fine except a weird MMS over WiFi issue that I am pretty sure has to do with the stock T-Mobile APN.
It seems in ICS it is harder to delete the stock APN, does anyone know of a way I can delete the stock APN?
And don't say just click discard, because it will not delete.
Thanks guys, I would REALLY appreciate a way to remove it!!

Turns out that after I Unlocked my phone, the factory locked APN went away so all is good now.
Thanks guys.

How is straight talk GSM? I read that after only 2gb of data you get banned. Is this true? How much data do you use?

So far I love it. I bought both an ATT and Tmobile sim card from StraightTalkSim . com and have been trying out both networks.
It is the same exact service you would receive from ATT or Tmobile directly as far as coverage and speeds go. (except no throttling from Tmobile)
As most suggest, I have found Tmobile to have greater data speeds with HSPA+ 4G, while ATT has the better coverage and lesser data speeds with HSPA 3G, but still not bad.
As far as the 2GB limit goes, I've read that I shouldn't go over it, so I set my phone to warn me at 1GB and stop me at 2GB of mobile data to be safe. If you are a total mobile data hogg, it might not work for you.
I am usually on WiFi at work or home, so I really don't use much mobile data. Per Sprints website (my previous provider) I averaged 300mb a month of mobile data, max I used in the last 12 months was 600mb. I am sure my usage will go up a bit now that I have a data network that is actually useable speed wise, but I doubt I will ever hit 2GB.
For $45 a month and no contract, it is unbeatable.
I priced the same thing out at ATT and I am looking around $99-109 / month for 2GB data, unlimited text, mss, and xxxx minutes. So with the ATT Sim card I get a $99-$109 a month (actually better because minutes are unlimited here) plan for $45 with no contract and I can swap between TMobile and ATT any time I want (just takes a few hours to provision the phone each time. I love it! I
I was with Sprint for 10 years and finally

Straight talk $45 unlimited plan

Does anyone have this plan? Im wondering if and when they throttle data, i called st but can't get a straight answer. Right now i get throttled after 5gb, if straight talk gives you at least 5gigs of full speed data it would be well worth switching for me. Just seems too good to be true.

They don't, common wisdom is that it's more like 2g/mo and 100m/day before ST throttles, but you won't get an answer out of them, ever.

You should look at the prepaid thread in my sig. It details all of the plans and there are lots of testimonials of people using them.
Common wisdom is that the Straight Talk plan caps at 2gb per month (theres no way they could do 5gb data at the $45 price point).
If you want more data you're either going to have to go with the $60 Simple Mobile plan, which gives 5gb+, or the T-Mobile Prepaid plans, 2 of which offer 5gb (then throttle).

so you are sure the simple mobile plan gives 5gb before throttling? Cannot find any definite number on their website just like straight talk. On tmobile/att/cincinnati bell websites it tells you the amount of data used where you will be throttled. At least they are up front about it.

It's not published, but just crowd-sourced that they offer 5GB of data. Many MVNOs choose not to publish whether or not they throttle/cap or at what point.
So after 5gb are you throttled or are there overage fees? Im assuming throttled since it's called unlimited. And simple mobile uses tmobiles network, correct?

My question for anyone using the gnex and ST is, does the phone use T-Mobiles network or atts? I read you can use either a T-Mobile or att phone and was wondering since the gnex is pentaband if you could potentially bounce from one network to the other based on which one had better signal? Thanks in advance guys.

You choose when you start the service whether you're going to get an AT&T SIM or a T-Mobile SIM (they can pick for you based on your zip code, but you can choose manually). You can't bounce back and forth, because the SIM is only provisioned for AT&T towers or T-Mobile towers. There's no roaming between the two.
When you order, its easy to tell. In the cart it will say "AT&T compatible SIM card" or "T-Mobile compatible SIM card".

straight talk is great as long as nothing goes wrong (which luckily is my case)
faster data speed than simple mobile and very good coverage
however their customer service is non-existent
calling them is a waste of time
try their facebook page if you really wanna have something done
much more responsive (they probably won't fix your problem immediately but at least they are responding)

This is true of prepaid carriers. You save money but get no service. I call CS maybe once a year, so I think that's worth saving $40 a month on service.
Has anyone on straight talk At&t sim tried doing a voice call or video call using Google Talk? when I try I get a message saying I need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network. Anyone else getting this?

I am now using my Galaxy Nexus with Straight Talk on the TMO ST SIM card. Overall its great. One thing I've noticed though are the ping times. On ST I can never get a ping better than 300ms using the speedtest.net app. Also several times when I've woken my phone from idle, I notice it says its not in sync with Google services...the bars are grey and not blue. It usually goes blue again within 30 seconds saying it synced. I think it may be related to the ping issue, as I think ST data goes through a proxy before going out over the TMO network to destination. The data speeds themselves seem the same as they were when I was on Tmobile, but I seem to recall being able to get around 100ms pings or less in the same locations when I was on Tmobile.

Is anyone planning on ditching AT&T to T-Mobile w/ unlimited data?

Heya - title pretty much says it all - have an AT&T Galaxy SIII and was seriously considering moving to T-Mobile because of the new unlimited data plan they were going to start offering on 9/5. I had also looked through the T-Mobile GSIII Q&A forum, but could only find questions of the situation the other way around, i.e. T-Mob GSIII phone on AT&T network.
Basically, was wondering:
- is there a hardware limitation that APN settings and/or installing a new modem will not get me good data speeds?
- would I just need to burn a new T-Mobile modem? Or, is it more involved?
- I'm assuming at minimum I'd need new APN settings, and am assuming T-Mobile would be able to help with that. Right?
Thanks, really interested in being able to do this! (if it's even possible...)
Look in the AT&T general forum for the thread title starting with BOUNTY..... didn't read the whole thing so not sure if its possible yet.
crrrap, looks like there's a hardware limitation. thanks for the lead!

thats still more then Tmo, even if you dont use more then 4gb. Tmo is still cheeper. hope that Verizon and AT&T see that they might not be able to keep that expensive shared stuff with other guys lurking around.
Unfortunately, it's the unlimited data that is the real desire for me. I don't do much talking or texting, but I do love streaming videos with Neflix while I'm on the elliptical at the gym, streaming internet radio while I'm out-and-about, etc.. Thing is, on my 2GB plan, that's only about 2-3 movies and then it's gone! Going from 2-3 to 4-6 isn't much of an improvement. :crying:
Since AT&T only costs me about $60/mo (taxes&fees included), I have no good reason to switch anywhere, and I'm stuck in my renewed contract unti Jan 1st, 2014 anyway.
(My 2011 monthly average was $69/mo though, with overages factored in)

I just jumped from T-Mobile to ATT. While the unlimited data is nice as you don't have to worry about overages there is a catch. Once you hit your 2 GB limit your data is heavily throttled. So even though you have 'unlimited' data you may not be able to watch movies after you hit 2 GB.
I ended up switching to ATT because T-Mobile's data speeds in my area (Minneapolis) suck... Then if I were to hit my 2 GB limit my internet would slow to a crawl.

I have the AT&T unlimited, it was 3Gb with 3G and 5Gb with 4G, then they would throttle data! but I think I read that the new TMo unlilmited is unlimited with no throttleing

ATT GS3 requires data plan?

hey guys i got my GS3 about 3 months ago on ATT and im looking to get the NOTE 2 unlocked...i have my own plan on ATT and my family has a family plan on ATT but not using data/paying..im going to give my GS3 to them when i get the note 2..
do GS3 on ATT require data plans if i give it to them? i remember i gave my ATT iphone 3GS on my lil sis and i forgot that ATT will detect it and add a data plan..not sure if ATT will do the same if i give my GS3 to my family..
thanks
It most certainly will. The moment the SIM is registered on the network, AT&T, in their omniscience, will add the 30$ 3 gb / mo data plan...without consent. Their used to be a loophole with some old blackberries, but that has since been filled with gummy evils ported directly from the Death Star. Good luck.

Unlock will not solve problem. I try this on my phone.
About data you need to call and tell att you want to keep your data. Also if you have old sim card you need new one to phone receive data.( applay to iphone4/4gs sims too)
You don't necessarily need a new SIM, LTE capable SIM cards are backward compatible, but 3G Sims do not work in 4g LTE devices. As for your unlimited, he's right, you must call ATT and have them manually add it. While they cannot force migrate you, they will certainly claim an inability to readd it back on once they change it away. Don't let them fool you, they are more than capable to add it back on the account if they can ascertain the presence of the unlimited data plan prior to a device change. Just be diligent and you will get it back. DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO CONVINCE YOU TO MIGRATE! The moment you consent to the change, they will not, under any circumstances, put it back.
Sent from my nugget
They will take the plan off if you use no data but whoever has the phone will have to contact att every month because att will just tack the plan back on
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
The only other way to do this is to take data off completely on that line. I have kids and we have unlimited text, so I called ATT and had them remove data completely from their lines. They had phones that did not require data. They cannot get pictures texted to them, otherwise they can call and text all they want and I dont have to worry about them killing me on data. I have swapped one kid to a SG1 I got from a friend and they did not do anything with data, if you say this is a minor and I want data off, its off. They use wifi if at home or school and they are fine. I do not think there is any other way you can get away with this.
Forgot to mention that my Lil sis is using a GS1 with no data plan I remember they went to att and got it to that set up and they got hooked up from the att manger... So if I give my gs3 to my sis they will still have to call and let att know that she's using a gs3 and keep the same plan she has with no data.. I believe her plan has 600mins/5000 nights weekend with unlimited text with mms /talk unlimited mobile to mobile..
As for me is just straight up put my 4G LTE att sim on my note 2 and put the lte apn settings and good to go?
Thanks guys :highfive:

[Q] Just rooted , no internet

Hi,
I just rooted my new Note 2 and it went smoothly thanks to all the information I read here. However, I have no internet connection now. I'm not saying that rooting had anything to do with it; I probably didn't have it before. Where in the phone's settings do I check to make sure internet is enabled? I found in the "settings" screen how to turn on Wifi and bluetooth but I didn't see anything for internet.
1. Settings. 2. More Settings. 3. Mobile networks. 4. Mobile data.
Make sure it's checked.

Yeah, its checked.
On the status page it says my network type is HSDPA:9 I switched simm cards because my old phone used the larger one. Is it p[ossible that the phone is trying to use LTE and my unlimited data plan is not LTE and that is causing the problem? How do I get to the screen that tells me the WAP I'm uisng? My old simm card (VERY oold) was from cingular so maybe that setting is wrong too. Just throwing things out here. Not really sure what is relevant and what is not.

APN says "phone"
MMSC http://mmsc.att.net
MMS port 80
MCC 310
MNC 410
APN type default.mms.supl
APN protocal IPv4
APN enabled
I am unable to edit the access point settings. Is this normal?
Edit. I added a WAP for cingular.com that I found in the thread about "how to get around throttling" and it seems to be working. I guess that means I'm still on some low speed plan. I'll test it later and see how slow it is.
The default AT&T WAP is still not working though.
Edit2:
Just downloaded the speedtest app and I get 1900 kb download speed. So I'm still 3g. Should I call AT&T to get them to change my phone account to LTE or is there someother way I can get my AT&T WAP setting to work and that will enable the higher speed of LTE?
how did you get a new smaller sim card for the new phone?
When I got a new sim the guy at AT and T said something about if I didn't get LTE showing up in a minute or so after booting my new note 2, that he would have to put my IMEI number in the computer. We were holding off because I was buying a Note 2 outright and also had a Note 2 in the midst of an insurance claim and we didn't want to switch the number and risk screwing up the insurance claim

The AT&T guy asked if I had a new phone and I said no because I didn't want to get switched off of my unlimited plan. I might have been being paranoid but I figured worst case I could always go back later and say I upgraded phones if I need them to do something to enable high speed.
To get the new smaller sim I just told them I was going overseas for a big and would be using a smaller sim so I had purchased an adaper and I wanted to use a smaller sim so I could keep the adapter in my phone. I got the idea from one of the threads here. Again, maybe paranoid but the idea of paying $50 a month for 5-10 gb of data with thrattling does not appeal to me.
and the proof:
if i'm understanding your delima - which was similar to mine - att needs to flag your account for LTE access and that's it. no plan switching, etc. i have 2 lines, one with a grandfathered unlimited LTE data plan and one with the the $50/5GB plan. the main differences between the unlimited and 5GB plans are: i get throttled after using 3 GB on the unlimited plan (vs. 5GB plan) and i cannot (legally) tether on the unlimited plan (like i can with the $50 plan). i've been throttled twice on the unlimited plan, but only after exceeding 4 GB.

All you need to do is call customer care (611) and ask them to update the imei on your line so they can add the lte feature code. The system won't allow an lte phone to connect to data unless the imei/feature is correct. HSPA will keep working, so if there's no lte in your area it doesn't really matter. You won't lose your unlimited data plan unless you give up data completely, want tethering, or switch to a mobileshare plan. If you keep that feature though, you'll be throttled at 3gb's, whereas you'll get 5gb's on the lte feature.
PM me of you have any questions. I know a certain company well.

I'm using the AT&T sim card through straight talk. You can get a T-mobile sim but I don't have any experience with that.
I am using the default tmobile radio. I get much better signal through that with AT&T than any radio I used with Tmobile in my area. 3g speeds only but it's an acceptable trade off for me (better signal and $600 bucks/year savings).
Use the APN settings on the straight talk webpage.
I currently use straight talk with the T Mobile SIM card and reception and data speeds are both fine for me. I haven't run a lot of speed test or anything of that nature but service works, calls work, I receive SMS and MMS messages promptly, and thus far have had a little issue with anything. I also managed recently to Zero my IMEI. No effect on service.
Was able to get a discounted rate and used a cash back card also, and got my monthly service down to $36, which I locked in with 8 months reserve. Am on month 3 and have yet to regret leaving post Paid T-Mobile.

I have ST on my gs2 right now with the new sbean 13.5 ROM . The service is def nice . I pay 45 a month and I get unlimited service. Even though its frowned upon I still tether my phones internet connection and it works great as well. My speeds with straight talk on at & t are about 7megs down with 1 meg up , I play minecraft on my laptop at park with no issues as well. Ping is usually around 120-180 but if you tether through USB instead of a WiFi hotspot it will bring it down to were games are playable .
