Son of a motherless goat!!!!! - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Well, not even 24 hours into owning my Samsung Galaxy S3, I now have spidered front glass. Phone was sitting on the kitchen counter. Apparently my wife’s new freakin cat was up there sniffing around. As I walked in from the garage it freaked out and shot off the counter taking my phone along for the ride. I guess it landed just right causing the front glass to spider.
Good news is I have insurance through T-Mobile. Bad news is the deductible is a $130 dollars. On top of that, T-Mobile didn’t have my account set up correctly. It still showed me owning my HTC Sensation. So when I got on the phone with the insurance company they said they could only replace my phone with a Sensation.
Had to call back T-Mobile to get that straighten out and then call back the insurance company. Now they say I have to wait 2 days before completing my claim to confirm with T-Mobile that I actually own a Galaxy S3. They said I should be getting my phone on Friday once everything checks out.
Now I have to sit here and look at my poor broken phone. I can’t start my healing process until I have the new one lol.

hahahahaha!! daammn that sucks I feel for you man. That's crazy sad.. Get a case on the new one asap..

Sorry to hear that...ummm quick start d/l stuff and trying everything before you send back....not going to hurt and try things, if you brick it...so what....
No really, hope you get your phone soon, I know the feeling. I bricked my S3 day 1 hour 3....was without for 4 days. BTW good movie quote, one of my favs.

man that sucks, sorry dude....i shattered my front glass recently, as well =(
such a horrible feeling isn't it? at least i had my phone for about a month when it happened. if this happened to me within 24 hours of owning it like you, i might have very well started crying.
my takeaways from my traumatic experience were:
the S3 seems fairly fragile, as shown by other xda folk who have also shattered the screen.
i usually keep my phone "naked" but have opted now to go for a fairly thick case. i don't think the "skins" like ghost armor will cut it for me anymore (my usual go-to). worked great on my S2 but i'm not taking any more chances. such a shame too, the phone looks so great as is. covered up with a case, it just looks like any other ordinary phone
asurion has pretty darn good service
this was my first ever asurion claim and although the 130 dollar deductible sucks, which just adds insult to injury (almost literally) after ruining your brand-new shiny device, i was impressed by asurion's speed. i shattered my phone on a wednesday at 3pm, ordered the replacement at 4pm and they had a BNIB! S3 in my hands by 11am thursday. sucks you had that glitch with the sensation though.
again, sorry for your loss. i hope your back in the saddle soon!

The motherless goat epidemic is a serious problem, i am petitioning for it to be addressed on the presidential platform this year! sorry to hear about your phone that does suck, i know id be pissed!

I've been super careful with this phone and I'm gonna try and stay careful cause I like to keep my "naked" too lol

I had my LG G2x for 2 or 3 days before I ruined it. I was at a friends house to go swimming. I changed and put the phone in my swim trunk pocket. I had just recovered from a surgery (testicular cancer removal) and was pretty excited to go swimming since all I could do before was lay down. Anyways, I just dove right in and didn't realized my phone was in my pocket. After a few minutes in the water, it was like a lighting bolt struck me, I remembered my phone was in my pocket still. I was super pissed.
Luckily I had Asurion insurance and it got replaced couple days later. Bad thing was I had my old Nexus One but it wasn't working to well. I still had my HTC G1 so for those 2 days, I ended up using the G1. Such a tiny screen and so slow.
Now I baby the crap out of my GS3. Skin and screen protector and no cats. :good:

I thought the glass was strong, gorilla glass 2 no less. My daughter dropped mine from the kitchen table onto the ceramic tile floor, thank God no damage.
I've seen the video of the guy dragging a gs3 and iPhone 4s around a parking lot tied to the bumper of a car and the gs3 survives no problem.

Do not do ANY other roms/kernels/radios, for other makes of the S3. PERIOD. Only the SGH-T999 tmo. They will hard brick. I didn't read, and did a 9300 rom. Bam, off and never returned. Bought a Jtag box, won't be without again.

Yes the wife and my 5 year old daughter have been wanting a cat for like 2 years now. I finally give in and 3 weeks into owning the cat, it has already cost me

i think it's 2 claims per year.

is there an easy way to buff out scratches on the phone, I have no clue how I got them cause I've used a case since day one and lay the phone on its back, and don't carry keys in that pocket (nothing at all really) but I can feel the scratches when I run my finger nail along the glass in tiny areas and barely see them in sun light... I'm not stressed about it, but thought I'd ask lol. Sorry to the op for the cats misfortune... You did get rid of it right??

[Q] Replacement Screen!

Yo guys, Had a bad day today.... Broke the screen on my phone. Does anyone know where to get replacement screen's from now a day's? Preferably not Ebay as i hate it but If that's the only place i guess i must. Now I have checked ebay but the ammount of Galaxy Nexus S Screen's that are on there it didn't seam like anyone would have any replacement screen's... could be wrong though! Any help appreciated
Kind Regard's James Mackay
You broke the screen already!? What happened?
You not going to tell me that you didn't insure device worth 500quid?
Sent from my GT-P7510 using xda premium
ill admit that this is the first phone ive had that i DID insure !
What happened? ... How is broke?
I was wondering how long it would be before someone killed one. I very much doubt you'll have any luck sourcing a screen for one this soon after it's release, your only choice might be to contact Samsung regarding repair I'm afraid.
Haha, yep I broke the screen. Well I've cracked it any whoo. Still working perfectly fine . I dropped it yesterday when I was walking to work. Landed right on a curb....
Yeah I didn't insure it, never dropped the previous phones I've had, this ones a slippery bugger though.
I didn't think there'd be screens out yet, I'll keep my eyes posted for some. Anyone know any decent sites to check?

There wont be any replacement screens out for quite a while im afraid, maybe 6 months or more as this is such a new phone and all available stock will be going to make the phone itself or held by samsung for repairs. As mentioned before your only option if you want it fixed is to send it back to samsung for repair or claim under your contents insurance if you have accidental cover.

do you have accidental damage on your home insurance? might be worth checking if they will cover you that way. All my gadgets are covered this way, whether inside or outside the house.
God know's ha, I'm currently living at my mother's so no idea if she has or not! Ahhh well, as i said i didn't expect there to be any screens. I can still use the phone, and at the moment can't be arsed with the hassil of ringing all these place's to check if they will replace it. Thanks anyway's guys, Got a perspective from it if anything .
Did you pay for it with a credit card? You may be covered for accidental damage eg barclaycard:

Buy eligible goods worth over £50 with a Visa or MasterCard credit card and they will be protected against accidental damage, loss or theft for the first 90 days, subject to an excess of £50. You might want to look into a warranty like square trade. I was looking at insurance options myself and square trade seems to be the best. They allow you to buy insurance for a phone that is up to 30 days old. It might not be the most ethical thing to do to buy it for an already broken phone but they wouldn't offer that service if it wasn't profitable for them.
The plan is not cheap, and there is a deductible for replacement but it beats having a broken phone for 2 years.

I am shocked . 500 quid phone barely a couple of weeks old and you can't be arsed to get it fixed? I would have literally in tears!
i saw on eBay it has already full housing.
The only parts site I know of is cnn.cn.
It doesn't look like they have anything for this phone right now though.
Well it isn't that bad. I can still use the phone perfectly and only notice the cracks when the screen is off. I can't get hold of a screen and am not dealing with insurance company a cause I feel them to be a majour pain in the arse. No point in getting worked up over something I can't change . I'll buy a screen when I find one online. Thanks for all your options though

I'll be going to china on december 7-8 and 14-16, i'll check it out for you, i'll look on the 7, and let you know, and if the price is ok, you can paypal me and i'll buy it on the dec 14, at present i'm searching for white nexus s battery cover for members in this forum.
dont expect the screen to be cheap, i remember the nexus s screen cost approximate USD 120 when the phone was first released.
I have had my Galaxy Nexus for 5 days, and have also cracked the screen.
Problem is I have no idea how it happened. Phone was fine this morning when I set out for work and put it in my trouser pockets. But when i got to work and went to use it there was a huge crack across the screen, about at the point where the curve starts.
So i thought i would try my luck and see if I could get it replaced under warranty, as i had not dropped it or damaged it in any other way, so felt it was a manufacturing defect. Unfortunately I had no luck. As far a Phones4u (Where ig got it from) are concerned a cracked screen is accidental damage, so i will have to pay to get it repaired.
Then they quoted me a cost of £40-£70 for the repair, with the final cost inside that range depending on the amount of damage they had to fix. Now if the fix comes in under £70 i will be extremely happy. When i broke a Galaxy S screen it was £70 for the part alone, so under £70 for the part and fix looks like a good deal, so i accepted thinking i would get nowhere with my warranty argument.
I am waiting for the catch as currently it sounds too good to be true, as i was expecting something closer to £200. I will let you all know how it goes.
Pics or it didn't happen
telepathically sent with my Galaxy Nexus which is being imprisoned by FedEx
pics
same thing happened to me, dropped from 2 feet onto linoleum.
still very usable, only somewhat annoying. guess i will wait a few months for replacements to appear. in the meantime i am ordering a case. also just want to say i have never dropped and broken a phone in my life before this.

[Q] Worst Build Quality of a Phone

I've owned my Galaxy SIII for almost three months now and it probably has the most defects out of any phone I've ever owned. The hardware buttons are loose, the back cover doesn't stay down on all the corners, and the back cover came with hairline cracks already on it. However, the final thing that really made me consider getting a replacement is the fact that the back cover doesn't even hold the battery in all the time. When I set my phone down on a hard surface without being extra gentle, the phone turns off. I temporarily solved this by putting a folded up piece of paper under the battery cover to keep the battery in better, but I don't think this should be necessary for a $200 flagship phone. I'm already over the 30 day return period, but would these reasons qualify for me getting a replacement phone under warranty?
I have 0 defects. My phone costed 549
Anyways call sammy and send it in for warranty
Yea I'd get a new one I paid $649 for mine and its perfect no problems at all!

Sorry for being blatantly sarcastic but loose buttons, cover not seating properly, battery falling out, and cracks? Obviously it was damaged. Before you got it. Pretty sure I'd return a TV with a cracked screen right away before stating it was the worst build quality of any TV ever due to dead pixels and screen flickers and the picture going wonky. I mean, come on man lol. Those defects absolutely would have qualified.. had you reported it right away.

I agree with the group consensus; is there any reason you're reluctant to bring it back? Do you feel guilty about dropping it or something? If not you should be on your way to the store and hope the phone gods have mercy on you since the 30 day return period is over.

Since you're pass the warranty buy a new back cover or a case like an Otter commuter, it will keep the battery and button in place...btw still dont get why you didn't exchange it if it came with a cracked back. Lets see pictures of all these defects!
Wow, I did a COMPETE work over on my phone when I was getting it, checked EVERYTHING, the sales rep was getting a little agitated, but I ask her, if she were spending $500+ on a phone wouldn't you check everything? She shut her pie hole quick, and had her get another one once. Oh well.
Unlike some of you, I actually have enough hand-eye coordination skills to keep my phone in my hand. Cases are bulky and for the clumsy. I am still under the one year warranty and the hairline cracks are only visible from one specific angle. They're really not bad defects, but they just add up and get annoying. I'm only asking if this is worth getting my phone replaced because I don't want to restore to stock for no reason.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
....... again..... if it had these defects.... and they've "added up" to become annoying.... why exactly did you decide to wait 3 months to try to do anything about it?
And if you think that cases are "bulky and for the clumsy"... then the only cases you must see anywhere are OtterBox Defenders and such. Did you ever hear of TPU? next to no bulk added to the phone (about as thick as a DVD... roughly), and gives the phone a bit nicer feel in the hand. Plus makes it a LOT less slippery than with no case at all. I've never dropped a phone either, but i'm not the type that's willing to risk the off chance that something DOES happen that a little bit nicer grip could have prevented.
The only "issue" (if you can even call it that) that i have with my phone that you are also experiencing is the loose volume/power button... which i'm pretty sure EVERYONE is experiencing. They aren't screwed into the phone in any way. They are slotted in, as they are for just about every phone. Yes, they're slightly loose, but it's not like they're ever going to just up and fall out of the phone.
At this point i'm tempted to ask if the hairline cracks you speak of are actual cracks or if you're just seeing the brushed finish of the back of the phone (assuming you have the Pebble Blue)
Still... why did you wait 3 months? Especially with the battery issue and such. I can toss my phone onto my bed, cover or no cover, and it doesn't shut off cause the battery popped out of place.
I've worked in the wireless industry for over 10 years I've yet to see anyone keep a phone out of the box with parts literally falling off and out of the phone. Hell I've never seen that at all for that matter. I can guarantee you've dropped that phone and I doubt that stuff happened out of the box. You may be in the on year warranty but if it has that sort of physical damage good luck getting it replaced.

Screen toughness

So I've had my note 2 for about 4 days. Paid full retail $700. First thing this morning I dropped it and boom goes my screen. My problem is. I was sitting and it only dropped about 2 feet. Onto a soft wood porch floor. By soft wood I mean it is and old porch and needs replaced. The wood is old and soft. also the phone landed on the back. I feel like any phone should be able to survive such a small drop. Not to mention we have the new ultra durable gorrilla glass 2. Right? Wrong. Samsung refuses to even consider helping me out. It is against policy they say because I dropped it. But I think a device like this should have been able to handle such a drop. If I dropped it from 5-6 feet or if I dropped it on concrete I would understand. I have had 2 vibrants. 2 galaxy s2. 2 galaxy s3. And now the note. Paid full retail for all of them because I use straighttalk. I would think being such a loyal customer would mean something. Guess I was wrong. They will fix it for me. For about $200 and I have to ship it to them then be without a phone until it is shipped back. Not cool samsung... not cool.

Did you pay via a credit card? My card (citi dividends) has a 90 day protection against loss, theft and accidental damage. Check if you card has the same, then see if you can send them the $200 bill and they should pay you that. Also, most credit cards add a year onto the warranty, so keep your reciept

Gorilla glass is hard, not durable. The hardness makes it scratch resistant, the tradeoff is it becomes brittle. Just like diamond, super hard but hit the right spot and its dust.
That said we all are owners of a super hi tech device that is NEVER MEANT TO BE DROPPED.
If it even survives 1 mishap, consider the gods smiling down on you.
Sucks but I think we expect too much.

I agree. Its not supposed to be indestructable. But also I expect it to withstand normal wear and tear. Like I said if it had been a drop from maybe 4 foot or higher, or a drop on concrete I would understand. Also like I previously said. I have bought every samsung phone since the vibrant. Actually 2. Of each me and my girl. And I paid full retail for all of them. They have all been registered with samsung. And I have never asked them for anything extra for free. But in this situation I believe the phone should have held up. And it didn't. Not even close, it was such a small drop and the entire screen is shattered. If you seen it you woukd think it was hit with a hammer. It still works,I just think my loyalty to them over the past few years could be rewarded with at least a slight break in the price. I'm all about samsung, I should be a salesman the way I try to push there products just because they are good products. And I feel they are looking at me like well look how much money he has dropped before with us. He'll just pay what it takes to fix his phone. And they are right. I just feel they could help me out.

I'm not stupid I know **** happens. My point is you dropped yours from 4 feet and got a small nic. I dropped mine from 2 feet and my screen is destroyed. The phone should have held up to such a light impact. This post is more to warn people of how fragile the phone is than anything. So there is no need to come in and tell me **** happens like I'm some idiot saying oh my god I didn't think a phone could break. I am aware of how much a device is suppoed to be able to handle. These screens should be able to handle what mine didn't. So again more than anything a warning for everyone else to be careful. There are not as durable as they try to make you think.

You obviously are missing the point. This can happen with ANY phone. Your phone just fell the "right" way. It doesnt mean its anymore fragile. So yeah...**** happens.

Your phone must have taken the hit in the perfect spot to shatter. This past Sunday at church, some of the youth were looking at my note II while I was having a conversation with someone else. A couple of the middle school boys were fighting over it and my phone flung out of their hands, hit the wall behind me where we were sitting, and it slammed the ground about 3 to 4 feet down. The battery and cover popped off, but there was little damage. All I can see now is a barely noticeable, tiny crack on the battery case, which is replaceable. The screen is as pristine as ever though. Side lesson? Don't ever let your note II out of sight when it's in the hands of a middle school boy. Or you can be the grinch of the group and not let the boys see it at all (girls are ok though).

I don't think you understand the differences between gorilla glass 1 and 2. 2 only got thinner, not more durable. These screens should not, and will not, be able to handle even a tiny drop. And on top of all this, you called Samsung expecting them to help?

That's a screw job if I ever heard of one, plus it sounds like you got a bad model. Mine survived a drop from a 6ft ladder onto solid concrete landing point blank on the corner with nothing but a scuff of the plastic that you can't even tell without me pointing it out.
It's just messed up that they won't replace it for you after such a short period of time

It's just bad business. I work in a customer oriented job, part of it is dealing with exchanges and whatnot, if you sell something and it breaks within a short amount of time regardless of the reason it's better to just replace it for them, on the grounds of good service and company image.
Had it been awhile then it'd be another story, but less then a week makes it look like you won't return or replace it cause you expect it to be a trend and have no faith in the product. And really there's money to be made there, charge a fee of some sort, replace the unit then fix the screen on the old one and sell it. Or just charge to replace the screen, that'd be the most fair offer to both and it'd make samsung look like it has good support for the customer.
Of course if he'd just bought insurance it'd be a moot point. 4.97/mo from tmobile, best thing to do by far

I bought my s3 on friday had my mom pick it up from best buy. this morning i went to shower and left the phone on the shelf playing music at least 6+ inches away from the edge of the shelf which over looks the toilet, some how while shampooing my hair the phone fell into the toilet...... :crying:i took it out dried it blew dry it a bit and then put it in rice as few suggested and read online..... what im asking is there anything i can do/say to ATT/Samsung/Best buy to get another one w/out having to pay 200 dollar deductible for ATT insurance? i would not care about paying up too 100 too get another one but i realize its highly unlikely. the phone is not even a week old and pray a miracle can happen.... any answer would be greatly appreciated...

Yeah, the countless number of people who've dropped their phone into the toilet. You could ask bestbuy but I doubt they will refund you/replace since this is an issue you brought upon yourself.

i didnt drop it in there, the phone vibed itself to the edge i guess from the music being loud and phone not having the slightest bit of friction?
Phone shouldn't be in the bathroom while showering. High humidity isn't the best thing for electronics.

lol very true but not too helpful the phone works fine besides the speaker...... please some advice i begggggg
Sorry to say it man but you may be out of luck. Water damage is really tough to talk your way out of, even if the phone vibrated itself into the toilet, you still set it there.
Maybe find someone who can do speaker repairs or else you may just have to deal with whatever fee it is.
I'd consider myself lucky that it still works at all, minus the speaker. Yeah, it's an important feature but with water damage...it's usually a non-working device with a $200 price tag to fix.
Yeah that's absolutely a bit of a tough position. Definitely not the best place for a phone, but you do have options. You could call AT&T and beg for mercy, threaten to switch, call retention, or do something like that though. I would say first just try to win over the sympathy of someone working there. They're people too and a lot of people have had toilet-phone related incidents haha.
I believe that you have a certain number of days with Best Buy to buy the protection plan. I also don't know how rigorously they test it to return withing their 14 day return policy. I might try a couple of stores if I didn't meet with success. With iPhones they put them into baggies with rice.
Good luck.
after testing it yeserday i put it back in rice cuz there was some moisture left on the front cam.... today its all gone and the phone works pretty fine, but like i stated before everything but the speaker..... i spoke with the insurance company for ATT with is asurian and they told me 200$ deductible best buy told me im basically screwed and that i can try and go to the best buy store and try and beg them to let me either exchange it or kick rocks....i wish i can pay another 50 for another phone.... they should have some policy for phone under 7/14 days old and if it works should be able to exchange for a newer one.... FML, if phone had a bit more friction, it dove into the water on its own =( thanks for suggestions ^

This actually made me laugh. Please don't try to play the victim here. This was 100% your fault. Don't blame the phone for not having enough friction.

lol i didnt drop it in the toilet it vibed in there my fault was bringing in the bathroom but all the other 100+ times i brought my old skyrocket in the bathroom and set in the same place playing music it never moved or anything and the s3 on the first time i bring it to play music it slides of the shelf is pretty unexpected especially when im washing the shampoo out my hair.....

My friend's iphone had water damage and geeksquad fixed it for free with a warranty. Im not sure how much the warranty is but im guessing its way cheaper than 200 dollars lol. Some dude dropped his s3 in poop water and putting it in rice worked perfectly maybe the poop was the charm xD
R.I.P
Your Phone's speakers
yea its working now after the rice but im gonna take it to best buy either tomorrow or friday and pray i leave with a positive mood and smiley face lol.... the phone should have a 30 day warranty from best buy and like 90 days or w/e it is from samsung but the lady from samsung told me that after water damage the warranty is basically gone and if the technician see a problem with the motherboard it will cost alot of money.... =(
I agree with Samsung stance on that. By no means was your phone defective.

Scratched the screen in under two hours... What the heck???

I picked up my Note 2 on Friday night and leaving the mall I put it in my pocket. I then made the mistake of putting my keys in the same pocket and put two large scratches in the middle of the screen.
I thought these screens were nearly bullet proof???
I putt a Zagg screen protector on it yesterday and you can just barely see the scratches, but I know they are there....

These screens are not bullet proof, they're just really hard, and follow very basic laws of nature, ie. Material A will scratch Material B, if Material A is harder. So, never take your phone to the beach either as the miniscule pieces of quartz in the sand will lay waste to your phone too.
I agree, absolutely stupid and not something I normally do. But its just strange to me that three keys, none of which are particularly sharp scratched the screen in the 15 to 20 minutes they were in my pocket with the phone. My previous phone (Galaxy S2) was pretty well abused over the time I had it, and it still does not have a single scratch on the screen.
Just seems odd to me. And wanted this to be a warning to others that the screens are not as hard as we might otherwise think.

Wow , that really sucks man . I'd have a ill panic attack if that happaned to me. It would literally make me for over another 650 to buy a new phone knowing those scratches were there within hours of buying it . :/ I hope you bought the Ins plan? Sorry for your loss sir.

It's your own fault dude. Gorilla glass never claimed to be scratch proof, its is more flexible than regular glass and stronger. I for one, always put a high end screen protector before I even turn device on. I call it "insurance".

No need to fault anyone. The individual already knowledge fault. You like some people I know in my life. Rip a hole into the person even after they ripped a hole into themselves. Doing nothing more than being annoying.
Gorilla glass is scratch resistant. Which is why manufacturers use Gorilla glass. And why some people think of it as "bullet proof". Of course it is not "bullet proof" or scratch proof. Nothing better educator than experience.

What are we going to do with you. You are in this: "Everyone at fault for devices costing higher and insurance costing higher" thing.
It is up to the store, in the mall, that chooses to take it back or not. Not that many get returned or exchanged in the grace time. And with the price deals that T-Mobile get they can afford it without spreading the cost to us.
The insurance thing is a different story from this grace time. Still $130 to $175 to replace a $699 device is a deal for the customers. Which means that the insurance business is still make very good profit. If it is worth it to you all depends on when the device is damaged/stolen or when you are planning to get another device. Saying to people not to return to repair or get replacement (after the grace time period) is like telling people to not go to the hospital because that will make your insurance higher. People should be able to go to the hospital even if they caused the problem. That is the price you pay in getting insurance yourself. This is the same with Cellular device insurance. If don't like this then don't have insurance and pay full price for each and every device. Then, for right or wrong, others are not effecting you.
When it comes to T-Mobile at 2013 on charging full price for devices: That has nothing to do with users "abusing" the system. T-Mobile is taking out the cost of the device from the monthly rates. So after spending $699 for a device you will get a lower cost monthly rate. And at the end save around $200 within two years of using that one device on the value plan. So stop blaming others for T-Mobile changing their business methods.
Of course you going to rip me a new one on this. I can hear now.
-
Quick question in the insurance, let's say i lost my phone, when I pay the 130 or 175 and I get the new phone, do I still have the same phone number or I get a new number?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk 2
i dropped my phone face flat from the chest height on a bus and 2 feet face down to a table and no scratches or cracks
After you replace your device you still will have the same cellular phone number.
