Holy crap - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

So I live in the DFW Metroplex and it's been raining all night and all of a sudden my phone started making a siren noise and this popped up on my phone:

so i clicked it and it brought me to this:
i have NO installed weather app or anything. does anyone know how this came up? it's pretty badass and VERY unexpected.

part of the Gov's new early warning text system

Its CMAS. Commercial Messaging Alert System I believe. In the messaging app go into settins and look for emergency alerts.
Pretty cool indeed!

Kind of useless though, right? Raining for hours and then a text message warning you about floods?

Yeah i got this too (while on stock rom, have since switched to Paranoid Android). I thought it was a cool feature as well but did anyone else notice that these notifications would pop up CONSTANTLY?
One night, my wife and I's phone (we both have the S3) were literally buzzing every 5 minutes for an hour straight with the same flood warning. Note that there were no thunder storms or rain or anything of that sort in our area but obviously this warning could have been for my entire county or something like that. Regardless, we ended up disabling the feature

You can disable it in the stock message app settings. The only alert that can't be disabled is the Presidential alerts.

Yeah the feature is cool when its accurate. Unless I have that setting disabled, I get those alerts constantly even when there is no severe weather in the forcast... sucks!

Are you sure you do not have the "Alert reminder" turn on? Or are you actually getting multiple text messages? I also live in the DFW area. I also got this warning. However, I got one and only one text and only once did it sound off.

Its only gone off once for me, but it seemed pretty accurate. There had been a flash flood warning for PART of my county (uses the polygon warning boxes), and it didn't go off for me until I drove into the warned area. Only went off once too. Though I must add that we were under a flash flood warning again a couple of days ago and it never went off. I'm using a custom rom now so I'm curious if something was removed or changed that it depends on.
Has anyone with a custom rom received any alerts?

Possibly a couple reasons for this:
When weather alerts are issued they are based on the polygon warning boxes. So you could have just been outside the warning area.
The tower you were connected with may have been outside the warned area.
If you are using the old radio and had wifi on, you may have the bug where sms/mms may not have been working properly.
GoSMS may have tried to intercept the message but isn't able to process CMAS msgs. (Not sure how those 3rd party apps work though)
Could be they are still ironing out the kinks in the system.
Who knows what else?!

Why These Weather Alerts w/ Sprint???

How Do we OPT out of these sprint weather alerts? I have gone into my messaging settings and turned them off. But I still get the stupid flood warning texts. When I delete them, they just keep coming through. I received like 20 text alerts yesterday because it rained lol. Any way to block them? I called sprint yesterday and the lady I spoke to, knew nothing about them lol.

You can opt out of most (but not all) wireless emergency alerts. On page two of this link is instructions on how to opt out:
http://community.sprint.com/baw/servlet/JiveServlet/previewBody/2811-102-1-2310
The code you put in the dialer doesn't work (at least for me) on CM9. Hope this helps.

For like the millionth time since this is like the 5th thread since aosp based roms have been released on this device. It's the national emergency messaging system test message, on TW roms its in plain text and says "this is a test of the emergency alert system, this is only a test" or something close to that since I haven't gotten a plain text version of it in months I can't remember the precise wording, but its only a test of the national emergency alert system used in the event of a disaster, natural or man made. It will text you if there's a severe storm, hurricane, earthquake, blizzard, tsunami, terrorist attack, nuclear reactor meltdown, biological outbreak, etc.
ETA: info on this should be stickied IMO so we don't keep having these threads pop up every month.

Well its not carrier specific, and the reason it doesn't show a sender is because it doesn't go against your messaging allotment, and will come thru even if you have no messaging plan. I've gotten about 3 dozen of them since the tests started being pushed in March. Usually get between 3 and 6 one day a month when they push the test messages. The tests show up in black text, in the event of a real emergency, or amber alert they come thru in red text with the location and details of the event.

[Q] Anyone know how to turn off the Amber Alert?

Was cruisin' on my motorcycle yesterday happily listening to Pink Floyd via Bluetooth when an earshattering buzz let me know the phone was receiving an Amber Alert. Anyone know how to disable the Alerts?
You can't. They are pushed from your carrier. These notifications are a good thing, what if the vehicle described in the amber Alert would have been in front of you?

You must not ride....
The air horn I have on my motorcycle startles other motorcycle riders that know I have it, when I set it off, so I can imagine a scenario where some loud ear splitting noise could startle a motorcycle rider and cause them to crash. Concentration, especially with regards to where all of the other vehicles are on the road and who could be potentially driving stupid so you have to watch out for, is necessary when riding a motorcycle.

The new facebook phone looks like a launcher on top of android.

Good point, though at least with Google I feel a little more in control of my information. Each app is by itself and asks permission to do something. At the same time it integrates nicely with everything. Google Now is very customizable and I have it tuned to just find certain info. Sometimes though, I wish I knew why Maps feels the need to access my GPS so often...but at least with that I can just shut my GPS off completely. Countless times I've opened up chat on facebook, and I always turn off the GPS function because honestly I don't need people to know exactly where I am just because I'm chatting with them. It always turns itself back on no matter how many times I change it to default OFF in the settings, and it always bugs me to turn my GPS on.
I always feel the need to check my privacy settings on Facebook since they have a bad habit of changing them and "accidentally" fixing my settings so more of my stuff is out there. I'm very reluctant to only share what I know I'm sharing, I approve every picture and post I'm tagged in or that has my name on it whatsoever. Honestly I don't trust Facebook more than I don't trust Google.

It might be a nice & cheap phone for custom ROMs. Never mind stock bloatware if the hardware is good.
If price/performance is good it could sell very well. H/W is HTC so quality is likely at least decent.
If that and the bootloader is unlockable, and the phone ROM'able, I'd expect to see custom ROMs getting built eventually.
EDIT: I see it's $450 off contract. There are probably better options in that price area IMO, such as an "old" Galaxy S3, if not now then soon.
And guess what ? I've read that there will be ads all over that launcher/phone thanks god Adaway exists.

So it might do same on other side too. Its dangerous to all.
It is a launcher but it will only work on 4.0 and up but its being released for a huge line of devices including mainly HTC and Samsung as they are the supporting companies. The lock screen features are cool I just wish it was for something other than Facebook.

Im also surprise that they dont have the N4 or the GNexus as their supported devices for the launcher and the icons doesnt seem to be vanilla JB but ICS. It would be a huge fail if they released this phone with ICS. Facebook app have bugs in it. Imagine having a phone that will run facebook home as default.

It was the worst 5 minutes of my time when I was playing with it. But it would be nice to use it as a live wallpaper

Really really weird bug. ROM? Phone? ATT?

Once a day, at least, i won't get text at all. For a period of time. Then if anyone did text me during that time I'll get all texts at once at a later time. ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCING THIS??? ITS DRIVING ME CRAZY!
Ex:
Wife text me at 5:00 "Hi babe"
5:15 - Babe?
5:30 - Hellooo??
6:00- OK text me when you have time.
At 6:20 (just an example not the exact time) I'll get everything at once.
Here is a pic

Notice how they arrived all at the same time. This convo was at 10pm
They all came at once at 12:10 wtf?? Lol
It happened on my Note as well so I know its not ROMs or phones.

Something similar happened to my girl's phone a couple months ago. 2 separate occasions about 2 weeks apart, but definitely not daily as u have stated. She could send text just fine, but wasn't receiving them. I found that if I sent her a picture with the text, making it an MMS it would go through... Pretty weird!! Anyway after about 3 days of not receiving regular text, she had like 300 + messages come through in the middle of the night!! Lol... She woke up thinking her alarm was going off...

Yeah this never fails to happen at least once a day. Could it be an ATT thing? I mean it happened on my GNote.. Didn't happen on my Captivate or Infuse... I'm still puzzled by this. Hopefully there is an answer. It would save me some arguments lol

She was using my old gs2 at the time, and on straight talk (at&t towers). She has an s4 company phone now on AT&T... I'm not really sure what it was. She finally called cs the second time, and they told her to factory reset, and it worked after that!

I have this problem with phone calls and voicemail only when I am on WiFi at my house sometimes. I personally think my WiFi is the culprit.

I have it both on WiFi and regular data

That has to be on AT&T's side. I have my AT&T S3 unlocked on T-Mobile, and it's working great! Absolutely no issues except that T-Mobile still uses the 1700 band instead of 1900 in some areas, so I'm on EDGE instead of HSDPA in non-refarmed areas. Thankfully they are building LTE quickly (as well as refarming), but I fixed data issues by using the ODIN mods on the AWS enabling thread.
Okay that was mostly OT lol XD but you might want to call AT&T, or switching your Mms.apk (it's probably SecMms.apk since it's a Samsung Phone). Hope that helps!
That hapoened to me a long time ago on a carrier called virgin (they're extremely awful don't go to them) but I think it stopped at one point and went back to normal.
Hold on, I have another trick, go to loserskater's stock 4.1.2 ROM/OTA. They posted the latest firmware that's flashable without Odin! It has a radio so that can help.
You also flash other radios in Odin too I guess.

Please read my previous post. I've used Odin many times with latest firmware. It happens on both stock and AOSP based ROM.
No. I don't want to flash a TW rom, it pointless, a waste of time and I'm not a fan of TW.
