Hi all! New Nexus owner. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello all, I've gotten to meet some of you already.
I got my GNex earlier tonight, I haven't rooted it.. I just wanted to test stock and dig through the options and get use to the nexus.
I came from the Droid Incredible so the nexus is like the "One Giant Leap" of phones. Its a 3'7 screen while the nexus holds a 4'6! But even so.. its still a baby in my hands. It sure as hell feels wonderful though, the vibration threw me off for sure. Its very odd to say the least..
Anyway just wanted to say hi and hope to fit well!
P.s. anyone recommend a good way to root? I'm imm76q*

Congrats. I should be getting mine tomorrow. I had to go into the Verizon store yesterday to play with one to tie me over (and I wanted to find out when we are getting LTE in my area).
One thing that concerned me though is the store model had pretty severe screen burn in / image retention. Obviously the thing has been sitting in the store for several months on the same home screen most of the time so the burn in is explainable, but I'm just wondering if this is something that will happen to mine over time.

Welcome! You will enjoy it!
To root just do adb reboot bootloader
Fastboot oem unlock
Then flash root .zip file
For more info on how to do it step by step, go to the sticky guide on the Q & A section.
Congratulations on your purchase by the way

Congrats & welcome to the best android has to offer!

Welcome! There's an All In One root tool available on the forum here..I went into this whole thing clueless and it couldn't have been easier! Good luck!

Once you get a hang of the phone.. install a custom jelly bean rom and install Trinity kernel. Your speaker and vibration will return to what a phone should have! Enjoy

Thanks all, I've been rooted and am enjoying the goodness of jelly bean
What is the best kernel you'd suggest? I'm on Franco, tried Trinity once but might try again as I might get better color frequencies.

use adb to root. Go to YouTube and look in the gnex folder on qbking77 channel. He walks you thru the whole thing starting with adb
If you're going to root you need to become familiar with adb in case issues arise.

I've used paranoid and I'm not too impressed with it on the nexus. The DInc was great it just suffered horrible battery. I'm currently on JbSourcery and it works great.
Edit: not to boast lol.. but I'm a pretty big guy, 6'1 and theast times I was weighed I was about 240-250. I gained 3lbs in one year, I gotta say I smiled at the doctor and said this is impressive. Plus my hands are like boxing gloves.

Out of those of us here who still support newt, are you able to access his site?? I'm unable to with the app or the browser. Here's what I get:

I'm trying to figure out like how I'd find it or whatever. But you're saying you can't get on either?
Something else weird, is I can't select the "whos online" feature in the xda app. Everythings breaking!!!
Same for me. It went out sometime late last night. Tried to access from my phone app around midnight and it was down then. Thought it was just my phone until I tried this morning from the computer and keep getting the "bad gateway" error.
Yeah, I just read somewhere that the site is indeed down, but how are we gonna find out when its back up?? Maybe Andy will post here and let us know??

Harley, I know its off topic of this thread, but how sick is this ROM??? Like I don't even know how much more newt can do to it. It's so smooth and I can't wait to see what he does next. I know he's working on more tweaks, that'll increase speed and whatnot, since he only tweaked the framework in the newest build.
Like anything you'd really change in this ROM?

There's not much I would change. I would like to see more skins, particularly the original Bliss skins. And there is a problem with a particular HTC widget that I've mentioned on the site that I would like to have fixed, but thats no big deal. Other than that, its just about perfect.

Actually...I AM getting amazing battery life on LTE now. I left it running all day today.
Come on people. This is completly unnecessary bickering. Im sure many are curious about battery life on 4.04 . To me it actually seems not as good unfortunitly. ( although i was in and out of service alot today) so ill have to give it more time to see.
I am certain my increased battery life is due to not dropping 4G every 5 minutes ( I work in a fringe area).

What is working in this? xboarders did not have data or any signal for that matter and a few other things but wifi did work? I cant wait it is only a matter of time now before someone gets it going for us I hope soon whoever does it is going to get a nice donation from me anyway.

Funny how there arent even CM alphas yet these guys are makin progress.
I'm be honest there won't be a fully properly working one till graphics drivers are released and proper source is released. I don't know what is rush to have ice cream sandwich. All the other devices have leaks when our device get a leak you will also start to see ics roms. The hp touchpad has extremely hacked android drivers. This is why cm is probably still not releasing alpha for the certain devices. There not reliable to work effectively and efficiently.

You just made my day, night and weekend. Flashing as soon as its done downloading.
DaxMax,
What is your icon pack? I downloaded this ROM thinking I'd have those sweet icons, but no love!
Really nice ROM by the way...as long as I'm here, I think I might stay a while!
Thanks,
Jim
Looks awesome! Gonna try right now!

Man that was a quick port Dax, you don't mess around huh? Thanks for showing the Toro some love too. Hopefully Goo will come back up by tonight so I can give this a try. Have only heard good things from the GSM thread. Thanks again!

Is it all mashed together so that you can't slide to pick an option? If so then it has to do with the inverted GApps. All you need to do is take a Phone.apk (just any normal non-inverted one) from another rom and place it in /system/app and that should fix the problem.

That makes me nervous about this rom working for me or not. Does it also show you as roaming? I had that problem with ICS where I could only use 3 or 4 different roms and the rest would show that I was roaming. Never could find out why and only a couple other people even had the problem. Luckily once Jelly Bean came along I haven't had any issues *knock on wood*

Nope. Doesn't show me as roaming. It does say mobile network is disconnected under settings. Yet I still have 4g

Official Jelly Bean for VZW Nexus OTA OUT!

Received the official Jelly Bean 4.1.1 for my Verizon Wireless Galaxy Nexus this morning. It's about F'ing time. Located in Los Angeles County, CA. Completely locked bootloader/stock rom. Just went back to factory everything last night due to battery issues and then getting Jelly Bean Notification is great.

Sorry the screenshots took so long, this damn forum said I am a new user so had to verify some horse crap and wouldn't let me post within 5 minutes of each other. LAME since I have been here since 2008.

Awesome. Were you on WiFi when you received it?
Nothing here in NYC. Must be rolling out in waves, as usual.

Posted this earlier, but yes, I received it too.
Located in Ohio. I woke up this morning and was promoted to install.
Can someone grab the update file name please? Open up the logs in /cache/recovery using a text editor and search for a file name ending in .zip. Thanks.
That's hysterical. I'd finally run out of patience and rooted last night. My girlfriend should be pleased though. She's still running stock on hers and is a little leery about rooting her phone. Now we both get JB!

My phone just updated (Florida) a few minutes ago after I connected to wifi for the first time today.
Orange County, Ca and no OTA as of yet. Cleared framework at least 50 times and still no go. Mine is running the leak, but my wife's is stock, locked, and unrooted. Does anyone know if the OTA disables universal search?

Has anyone who's received the Vzn JB OTA had enough play time on their phone to see if the LTE signal issues have been resolved? I know we all have a 99% sure suspicion that the new radio files would fix it but I'm really curious if people are noticing a difference.
From the screenshots I saw the radios are the same from the other leak. Anyone confirm this yet?

I've never had any of the signal drop-out problems that other users have reported. I did flash the new radios today and have noticed significant improvement in wifi/4G hand off. Enough so that it actually diminished battery life slightly, since the 4G signal is stronger outside my house than the wifi and it makes an almost immediate switch to 4G. Not a complaint, just surprised at how efficiently the transition is made.

Also in Ohio. No OTA here. Was rooted this morning. Restored due to no Facebook/Gmail notifications on CNA. Saw someone mentions wiping framework. Not sure what or how to do that?
Cracks me up that all you guys have a Nexus, and have not rooted. What a waste of a phone.

Some of us wanted a phone that was free from manufacturer skins and bloat ware, and the Nexus was just that with great hardware. I've played with custom ROMs on a GalaxyS, and found that I'd rather do work WITH my device instead of working ON my device. Rooting is fine if you have the time, but I don't and would rather have security and stability.

It cracks me up that people who have rooted Nexii have quite the same elitist attitude that iPhone users have.

It feels that way sometimes. So many threads and blog articles have comments from these dicks saying things like "If you haven't even rooted it you don't deserve to have a Nexus". It's like just shut up.
