phone stuck restarting itself - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

hey guys i need help stat, my phone all of a sudden rebooted itself and wont even get past the darkside load screen, it just turns off and keeps trying to turn itself on. i can't even boot into recovery via volume button. any suggestions?

Sounds like a faulty power button. Mobiletech will fix it cheap or time for a warranty or insurance exchange.

So you can't hold down the volume keys while it reboots? I did that when my phone got in a boot loop and it booted into recovery.
edit: to clairify, I didn't need to hold down the power button, just the two volume keys, I figured I'd point that out since we're thinking its a broken button right now

I had this issue a couple days ago , but after constant pressing , air duster-ing , and smacking the phone, the issue completely stopped , I'm thinking maybe a piece of dirt got stuck between the outer shell of the button and the actual button attached to the motherboard (never opened this phone but assuming its a similar to the 3g slide I took apart and repaired )

[Q] Need help plz phone died

Hi there
I updated my phone to jellybean yesterday i am with tmobile uk , the phone worked fine after this everything seemed to install ok.
until a hour ago, i got a phone call answered it, then hung up, i put my phone in my pocket, next time i took it out the phone was locked on the boot page the white screen with htc logo on, i tried to power it off and the the 3 buttons on the bottom of phone started to flash white for 10 seconds then phone swithed off. the phone wont turn back on, it wont charge, tried usb to computer no lights nothing. the phone was fully charged when it switched off. my phones a standard one never touched bootloader etc
i spoke to htc they think its software problem, they say when i downloaded jellybean i used 3g not wifi (my fault) this could have caused the problem as there could of been a drop in signal they tell me.
the problem i have they want 210 pound to fix and they say its not under warranty as i have had the screen replaced, but not by htc voiding the warranty.
Can anyone here give me some advice or help to fix my phone please.
thanks
maka
Can you enter the bootloader by holding the power button and the volume - button together, keep them pressed until it enters the bootloader.

[Q] Stuck power button?

So I'm not entirely sure what is wrong with my phone. I did some searching and I assume it's a stuck power button.
I bought a used logic board and swapped it with my hardbricked phone. I resurrected it and got to use it for about 2 weeks. Today out of the blue it dies out on me.
I was running AOKP build 4. Not too many problems besides the random reboots.
I took apart the phone and found out that the power button can push in but it doesn't click. It just gets pushed in and it relaxes itself back out.
When a battery is placed into it, SAMSUNG pops up then screen goes black and vibrates. If I plug it into the computer, it is not recognized, screen is black, starts to vibrate. I have a USBjig which I used on it. It put it into "factory mode" in which after like 3 seconds it flickers blue and then blackscreen and then vibrations.
Any idea on whether this is power button failure, or motherboard failure? I hope there is an easy fix to this. [aka swapping out power button etc]

[Help] Infinite vibrate boot loop, bricked? please guide me! ><

Hey guys,
I recently installed a new rom but it kept turning off if i take any action so I used Odin and went back to stock unrooted. It was okay for half a day
and it started to shut off randomly as well.
*NOW it's in a constant boot loop. Once I insert the battery it vibrates and turns on by itself and shows the Tmobile logo for a sec and turns off -> vibrate x infite showing black screen
I was told that this could be a "sticky power button, stuck power button" so I opened the housing and used air can, and kinda cleaned and messed around a bit but I dont see how it will fix anything (Suggestions please!) Didn't look like it was sticky or stuck at all @@
I can't get into download / recovery mode because phone just shuts off before I can do anything and vibrates over and over.
Is my phone bricked? or that sticky power button issue? I heard theres not really a simple cure for the stuck power button.... is there?
Does samsung do anything about this even though device is out of warranty? I'm so confused atm >< please share your thoughts and guide me please!

Try holding down the volume up and volume down, then hold down the power button until it vibrates twice then release the power then volume buttons. Not sure if you have tryed this yet but that should boot you into recovery.
I dont think that your phone is bricked. I had the same problem and thought the same thing you have. That maybe it bricked or what not. I tried flashing different roms and that didnt work. I went to a repair shop and I got my power button repairs and I flashed it back to stock 4.1.2 unrooted. It has been working fine for me ever since. You might just need to get yours repaired. Hope this helps.
it's not bricked, this happened to me about a month ago. Your power button is broken most likely and needs to be replaced. I got mine fixed for $40.

Google search is a prerequisite for troubleshooting. Here's a couple links which might help, if it's actually a bad power button.

[Q] Power Issues... Even in recovery/download mode

Phone randomly turns off/reboots (mostly reboots). Sometimes the phone won't go past the "SAMSUNG" screen on boot. I booted the phone into recovery and download mode multiple times but it'll reboot after a minute or two.
I've tried another battery and still had the same issue. I've removed the battery and held the power button down to discharge power. I've opened up the phone, blew the dust out, and made sure that the power button was not getting stuck. I'm fairly certain it's not a rogue app causing the issue, but I've factory reset the phone to stock.
Please advise!

if you have a sd card, sometimes a funky sd card will cause this as well. remove yours for a while to check if its causing your issue
Sounds like the same problem I was having. Take your finger and lightly move it up and down over the power button.. if it acts up or reboots it could be the button issue..

I was having the EXACT same issue. I thought it might be the recent upgrade to the cm11 nightlies since before it was once a week but now it's just non-stop. Is the issue the actual power button switch or the plastic buttons?

For me it was the power button itself.. Read my post on how to fix the issue yourself if you dont want to take your phone into Sprint
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2679936
Fixed (kind of )
I've taken my phone apart before to replace the speaker/audio jack module after my headphone jack stopped working in one ear (also a common s3 problem). I did as suggested and added a piece of paper wedged in between the button and the button switch. Surprisingly the switch was perfectly clicky so any problem will have to be internally such as corrosion or just worn out. The problem seemed to have been fixed (kind of, not really) as the phone turned on and wouldn't freak out when I rubbed the power/hold button. I got all my data off the phone successfully. The buttons themselves are pretty cheap online but I don't want to have to solder considering I have an upgrade. I'll just get an S5 whenever they are available. Thanks for the help.

I'd like to thank everyone for their suggestions. I determined that it was in fact a power button issue.
My "FIX" (for anyone with similar issues):
Temporary:
I removed the logic board from the phone and flicked the button up and down and that helped a little with the button's hypersensitivity. Because a slight tap would make the button "stick" and power off, I took apart the phone and physically removed the plastic power button. I could hit the button if necessary with a small screwdriver or my watch strap thingy, but I did my best to keep the battery from dying out. As for dealing with a lack of "lock" button, I installed an xposed module that let me remap my volume up button as a lock button.
Permanent:
My mother recently upgraded her phone and gave me her S3. Unfortunately it had a cracked screen. I removed her logic board and swapped it out with what was in phone and reactivated her phone as mine.
Thanks for everyone's help, and hopefully this can help someone else too!

phone keeps turning on by itself after i put the battery back in

This has happened to me before where my phone would just turn off and not turn on until i take the battery out and put it back in. When i put it back in it goes on by itself and shows the samsung logo then nothing happens. The same would happen if i keep on taking the battery out and putting it back in. I read somewhere if you bang the side of the phone where the power button is it will fix it and i did that and it worked. Now this time it isnt working so i dont know what to do...
My best guess would be that its an issue with the power button being internally stuck. I had the same issue and fixed it by basically trying to pull out the button the get it unstuck then i got the app called easy touch android and I don't use my power button.

OK so is the phone failing to boot? Or is it just always turning on

i was able to fix it. i banged the side where the power button is and now it works. unfortunately thought if i press the power button the phone will go in and out of sleep and then restart because it thinks its being pressed when it really isnt. so i dont know what to do about that now
Well if you have a little hardware skills you could probably fashion a new button onto the sensor

i popped the power button out and i put it to the side so now its fine. I dont really need to use the power button. Paranoid Android has a feature to put the phone on sleep and I can easily go into recovery using rom manager
banging it is a temporary fix. ultimately i soldered off the power switch completely and replaced it
i wouldnt be able to do that aha
Had the same problem with my Samsung Infuse. Had to replace the power switch, PITA

i didnt think i could either for the record. try an old device first
I dont have an old device. Im hoping i can keep this working until i can get an LG G3. Right now I cant get it to turn on. I have to keep trying to turn it on and hope that i get lucky that it doesnt think the power button is being pressed
