OK I wanna know how much more complicated unlocking and rooting is compared to GNEX.
Because a GNex is very easy to modify. I also wanna know if this device has any common defects. Because I currently own a Galaxy Nexus and my friends is waiting for my recommended device.
I wanna recommend a GNex and use all my experience on it for a quick hackery job. But the Gnex is too outdated for my friend's taste.
I wanna recommend the S3 for it's superior hardware, BUT!!! how easy is it to root and slap a ROM on it and swap out kernels and unlocking it and what are possible defects. I wanna rate of difficultly for the rooting experience of GNex(its a 1 on difficulty)

No experience with other devices, but it's pretty easy. Slap a readily available pre-rooted stock ROM onto it through ODIN one time, install CWM, and then you're flash-happy forever.
Videos to see how easy it is....

I'm guess it is the same as a gnex tou just flash zip files and from posts above you can see how easy it is

Yeah it seems. Easy.
How bout switching from Twiz to AOSP??? And then switch back to Twiz.
I just want to be sure everything is exactly how I see it. So far doing that seems easy.

I have had a epic and a nexus s 4g and I rooted both of them and loved it. I rooted for the main reason to help with making the phone faster due to them just having a single core. Using the galaxy nexus it seems to be very fast stock. Will I see a big difference rooting this phone and over clocking it and running roms or is just as smooth as it being stock. I do not use wifi tether and themes really don't matter to me. All I care about is speed and stability. If rooting makes this beast even faster please let me know and recommended what you feel would be the best set up for me to use.

I've always rooted my devices and ran custom firmware (Xperia x10, Captivate, Xperia Arc, Desire Z, Desire S, Xperia Ray, Nexus S)
But with the Galaxy Nexus...ah I am just not feeling it. I am going to wait I think until it gets old enough that google is not giving it the latest version of Android...and by that time I might not even have it because I plan on just paying the early upgrade fee and getting the latest Nexus always, then selling my current device to cover the cost anyways so...I don't know. But I am personally happy with it as is for the time being.
You've rooted before so you know what it's like. I like having complete control and the ability to have access to system apps as well as flash custom kernels and ROM's. So if you want speed and stability then yes root because ROM kernel combos will give you that. But I'm sure you're aware of this already. My phone is much faster with better battery life than stock. AOKP ms3 and faux123's newest kernel has given me what I look for. AOKP's customizations make the phone my own which is what I want besides the speed and stability.

I didn't root for a while but now am happy I did, I dont really notice speed increases but the customability is much better, I have a menu button always visible better lock screen with access to SMS, Widget for wireless AP and silent in my Notification bar. There is definitely benefits!
I never even had a smartphone till I got the nexus. I was so nervous about rooting it. Thought for sure I would brick it. But I realized what is the point of having a developers phone and not seeing what developers can do with it? Might as well have gotten a razr or something that would have ics in a short time. I read, and read some more, found a toolkit that also had a video and rooted my nexus. Best decision I ever made. The development for this phone is insane. I still get nervous when I flash any new rom, theme, animation mod, softkey, or whatever, but that keeps me on my toes so I don't make any mistakes. Stock was nice, but why not have stock on steroids? Battery life improvement is reason alone to root. So I guess I wood say read, learn and root.

Thanks for everyone's in put I feel in about a few days I'll just root and be addicted to flash crack again. Lol

What ROM are you trying? I'm using Gummy and I love it- awesome battery, performance, and customization.
I used my upgrade from my Nexus S 4g and decided to come over the the S2 on Sprint. I intend to play with this phone till my wife upgrade is in August which she will take the S2 in hopes that I will get the S3 by then.
Been reading up on these posts on here and I think I got it but wanted to make sure.
1. I need to Odin to get root with el29?
2. Never flash, wipe, reset data in ICS CWM?
3. Is it me or are there no Kernels like AirKernel for this phone?
4. I plan to go with CNA as I had on my Nexus. Love that rom anything you would like to share about this rom?
Any advice on the questions would be great and to be honest I really only post here and there but I'm always on here. Been here since the release of the Evo 4G.
Thanks.
Thanks and it awesome to be a part of the S2 community. WOW.
Really feels welcome here......

Wow, congrats to the E4GT community. You just enrolled another winner to the team.
How come no one rolled out the red carpet within the first few hours of this thread?
Glad I moved onto another phone, you guys really suck here
OP, you should get a GN. After my first post there, I was sent a 4 course meal from my favorite restaurant.
xda same as always...
Stoked to be here though.
Sort of asking for help, those are things that I've read up on. Just kind of a ice breaker more then anything.
Welcome to the party and congrats on the new phone.
The only question I can answer is #1, which is yes, to get an easy start just Odin sfhub's one-click EL29 for root, then read, read, read in the development section for all the goodies available.
Happy flashing and remember, if you brick your phone it's all on you.
1. I rooted just fine without Odin.
2. Yes it's also recommended you do that with most roms overall to avoid technical difficulties later on.
3. Idk what airkernel is, but there seems to be a limited choice if kernels for ginger.
4. CNA? Don't think I've seen a ROM called that around here but what do I know? I'm just a newbie...

You just have to have thicker skin over here, people may seem a little harsh at times (me included) but at the core of their comments you typically find the truth you needed. If you read around enough you'll see there are a lot of good people in this community. I'd suggest you start with the thread below to see what I mean.

Most important of all, just follow the #1 rule of thumb for the internet, don't take things personally and you'll be just fine.
Oh, also, don't expect anyone here to a)kiss your butt (well maybe iSaint j/k lol), b)hold your hand or c)pat you on your wee little noggin when you f*ck up because you didn't read and ended up bricking your phone. That is all.
Everybody moved to the Evo One. This place is a ghost town now.

Coming from a Evo then a Nexus S 4G I can't believe the trouble ones has to go through flashing roms that are ICS.
Odin is easy so that is nice but still. Seems like a lot of effort.
This phone is sweet. I just got to wait till I actually have time from work, kids and family so I can sit down and root this think and flash away.
Excited.
I can honestly say if it weren't for Odin and sfhub's one-click goodies I would probably still just be an observer on this forum. But he made it easy and then I learned to flash recovery and in doing so was able to start flashing Calkulin's custom ROMs. Although that's as far as I've gotten for now it's a long way from where I began and I'm excited for what's around the corner.

Once the source is released and official ota's are out im sure all the kinks will be ironed out. Development for ICS is still early for this phone. Using Odin isnt that bad, you can still flash a rom in about five minutes.

It may seem a bit overwhelming at first but it really is incredibly easy. Just make sure your CWM is stock (just flash CM7 or GB Miui), and then you should have no issues flashing ICS.
mobile Odin is your friend guys. as quick as a reboot.

OK I have the dual booting app all set up and everything(I think). But I can't seem to pass the Google Screen when I try to dual boot to Paranoid Android.
Any ideas why this fails and how I can get this to work on my Galaxy Nexus. This app is really cool and I want to Triple boot to MIUI, Paranoid Android & Vicious JellyBean.

maybe its a kernel issue like a jellybean kernel wont work on a ics rom like miui idk thats what heppened to me when i tried to dual boot
Kernel???? How??? I did an experiment to see a certain result. I tried to duel boot from JB to JB (Vicious Into CM10) and it didn't work.
So it can't be the kernel.
This app is sooo neat though that I refuse to give up and get it to work. I've been reading the App's website about how to use it.
MUST MAKE IT WORK!!! :banghead:

My dad has a Droid Incredible.
I just got it to do a dual boot with Sense 3.5(v2.3.5) into ICS CM9(v4.0.4) 3 hours ago(2:30)
IM SOOOO JEALOUS!!!!
And I just did ICS to ICS. it works......
I sent an email to the app devs about this. Hopefully they'll give me some clues. And I hope it's not an abandoned project. This app gotta be THE GREATEST idea ever.

---------HERE IS THE EMAIL----------
Hello!!!
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
I have downloaded your jaw dropping app "Boot Manager". I have the Galaxy Nexus running v4.1.1. I have read the Manual Website and learned a lot about your app. Just when I thought my phone was ready for it's first ever dual boot, my phone gets stuck at the Google Screen and then directs me back to Recovery. I was able to fix it by following instructions on your websites.
Attempted Dual Boot:
JB(Vicious JellyBean) into ICS(Paranoid Android)
So then I tried an experiment. I figured maybe I can't dual boot JB into ICS. So I tried to dual boot JB into JB. It failed as well.
Attempted Dual Boot:
JB(Vicious JellyBean) Into JB(CM10)
I have never tried ICS to ICS yet. But I don't want to use ICS as a primary rom. So are you guys working to fix this with an update??? Or do u have an answer to fix this now???
I really want to buy the Pro but I don't think that will solve the issues. =\
Thanks for reading!!! ^__^

I just got my S3 on Monday, my first Android device.
I followed the same tutorial defnow provided, specifically, the clockworkmod one. I also have chosen diet rom as my rom to use from all the praise given from this community.
And yes, you have to root, the order you should do it in is
1. root
2. clockworkmod
3. flash your Diet rom.
Hope I helped!

+1^^^ Also, usually when you flash a rom you should wipe your data before flashing. This holds true for most roms.

I just graduated from an Atrix 4G to the Galaxy S3 today. AT&T - Garnet Red variety. So far...absolutely loving the phone. Rather close group of friends and I from my work are quite enthusiast when it comes to rooting and flashing custom roms and the like. Several of my friends own Galaxy Notes. But coming from an extensive learning romp from my Atrix - which I beat to death and rom-flipped about 9 thousand (and one) times a week. I can vouch for everyones comments that you should always tread carefully once you venture into the realm of Custom ROMs. I only soft-bricked my Atrix once...and I recovered from it rather gracefully (Read: Clumsily). Just keep your head on straight and don't freak out. Accidents are bound to happen, and if you follow the guides and faq's you should be able to enjoy yourself and enjoy the wonders of custom roms without too much fear of turning you beautiful S3 into a brick. Well I will eat crow here now. But in a matter of a few hours I have managed to figure out (with a bit of help just for the unrooting part) I unrooted my phone and was back on stock sprint JB for a short time and compared to the custom codename android, it sucked!!! It was slow and laggy. I know I caused a fit here but hey, I learned the difference between stock and custom and also learned how to root, unroot and flash new roms using my mac. I wanted to let you guys know even though you think I am a biotch, I learned a lot from you here and a few others. It is friggin hilarious to me that I pitched a fit to go back to stock on sprint and here I am back to codename android and now I know how to update and flash roms. Go figure.
