I was told I can download handcent sms to fix a timestamp issue im having (because it automatically displays texts in the order they're received instead of using timestamps). However, I had the program and deleted it once before, but after reading up on it I still have a file somewhere on my phone called com.handcent.newsms, and having that somewhere on there is preventing me from installing handcent. I checked in titanium backup and its one of the files with a line through it (aka-its been deleted supposedly), and my phone has been searching my files using ES File Explorer since about 7 hours ago with 0 progress. Any ideas on where this file might be?
Same problem with the XDA Forums app. Had it, deleted it, but after searching Titanium Backup theres still a file being displayed called com.quoord.tapatalkxda.activity and i'm assuming thats the reason I can download but not install the app. And idea where to find this one?
back everything up, boot into recovery and wipe data/cache. then reinstall everything
ive wiped several times when installing new roms (before i knew i even had this issue).
are you restoring the same rom after wiping? if you wipe then install a new rom there should be nothing leftover to give you issues
nope, ive installed a new one every time (to be more specific- miui, cm6, evozone.pure, evozone.riptide). and ive tried searching for the file on my file explorer and it just stays at 0% (on hour 8 now). It shows the files (the handcent one and the xda one) at the very bottom of Titanium Backup with a line through it.
when you touch that line does it not give you the option to delete it? if it is just a line that means that you have a backup for an app that is not currently installed
nope, and it says that theres no backup for it. it has the yellow sign with an exclamation mark in it next to it, which after i looked means theres "nothing"? this is doing a fantastic job of irritating the piss out of me.
in titanium backup, hit menu then clean dalvik, then reload app list, if still there then with a file explorer go into the titaniumbackup folder and delete the files associated with those entries
cleaned dalvik, still there. and thats the problem, i cant find any files associated with them.

Have you ever copied your SD card to your PC? If so - you can go into the TitaniumBackup folder on your SD from previous manual backups and just reinstal the apk from there... I do that all the time. When I flash a ROM, First I make a NAND backup of said ROM, restore all apps and info (Texts,Contacts,Emails etc) then I do a TB back up and a MyBackUpPro Backup and then I copy all the files from my SD (which will contain all the backups you just made)to safely keep all the back ups you just made safe on your PC...If you dont alredy do that kind of thing, maybe its a good idea to start for these types of problems
hope that helps, if not - I do have the Apks for both apps your looking for - I can email them to you if you want
make a backup of your sd card on your computer, then format it and put only a rom .zip file, wipe everything multiple times, install the rom from sd card
check if handcent or xda will install, if yes, replace the files on your sdcard that you copied before format.
if no you have successfully gotten somebody else as frustrated with your phone as you are
Worked, thanks a ton for the help

I am running current version of Bonsai 3.0.1 Yesterday, my phone dropped and the battery fell out. When I tried to reboot the phone, there were many Force Closes. I tried fixing permissions twice but it was still having FC issues, so I figured I'd restore the data. Well, I hadn't backed up in several days, so I did a Nandroid backup before I went to restore. I kind of figured that restoring the phone from a backup of bad data wouldn't work and it didn't. Restoration from that backup causes a endless reboot. Sooooo, I restored from a backup which was several days old and it worked fine. But, my data is old for one particular app.
So my question is this: Can I extract data for one particular app and restore it from a Nandroid backup?
Or is it possible to restore the apps only from the Nandroid backup?
If I choose "Restore Data" from the Nandroid backup, I go into an endless reboot loop.
Restoring the "System" will bring the phone back to working, but the data is old.
Yeah, Yeah, I have Titanium and could have accomplished this easily with it, but I hadn't been backing up there either.
I know I'm probably screwed, but if anyone has any suggestions about how to get my data back (for one app or all), I'd sure appreciate it.

I think there is a way. Someone else had a similiar problem and wanted to get their text message data out. It is in the thread below where 00dwan talks about unyaffs and data files. Seems a bit complicated but if the data is that important you will need to be able to identify the data file for that app.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Thank you Thank you. Works great!
I'm having trouble putting the file where it needs to be (I'll figure it out), but I am able to get the information I need from the data file even if I can't get the file where it goes.
It is kinda weird. I put the file on my SD card and then put it into the phone. I copy the file to the clipboard and then go to the directory I need to place the file in. I select paste and it seems to paste the file, but nothing changes. I think it was because I hadn't mounted the system/data as RW. But the strange thing is that when I copy the file to the clipboard from the SD card, the file DISAPPEARS as if I cut it instead of copied it. Anyway, I'll figure it out.
Thanks again for the tip!

Glad it helped. Definitely sounds like it wasn't mounted r/w. Wierd that it disappears from card on a copy operation. Root Explorer is good for this.
trying to restore apps and i get this message! ? fix?
the restore of data was fine but apps wont!
I'm getting this too when trying to restore my data after flashing a new rom. Let me know if you hear of any solutions.
The mybackup website says its an SD card error.. that may be the case, but it was working fine an hour ago on the old rom I had (because I'm new I can't post the link, but a quick google to their FAQ and you'll see what I mean)
I think my issue was due to the SD card. I reformatted it and then copied the contents back again from my laptop. I've now re-installed the new ROM and am using mybackup root to restore my contents as I type this - all seems fine so far
Thanks for the feedback.
What did you format normal or ext or both

I had the same error. I don't find how to fix it but how to recover my data app.
Save the backup on your PC
Execute all .apk in my save folder from your phone
Launch mybackup to do another apps save with data
Copy all file wich are not .apk in the old backup (on your pc) and past them in the new backup folder on your phone (replace all existing file)
And finaly restor the backup, it will restore the data with the app
It's not "user friendly" but it worked for me, it was not a SD card issue
I was having this same issue. Watching alogcat revealed that an apk that MBP was expecting was not there, causing an IO error.
I tried to restore again, this time unselecting that specific app and it appears to be working.
So to fix it, install alogcat and watch for errors as the restore is taking place. This should clue you in on the problem.

This was exactly my problem. Seems like the ****ing program didn't actually back up a damned thing. The folder which was supposed to have the backed-up APKs was completely empty.
I had to restore from an older backup and it worked.
I guess that's just what happens when you rely on free apps.
Just got the same STUPID problem - I'll try the fix above.
The only reason I chose MyBackup Root was because you can do "0-click batch restore" for free which you can't with the free version of Titanium Backup.
EDIT: Backups won't restore. It says "I/O Error". I've had the SD card for a few weeks and it was working perfectly with Titanium Backup. Also, everything's been properly installed formatted and fixing permissions and clearing caches makes no difference.
EDIT 2: After running aLogcat, it says that Mybackup has the following error: "...apps/appnamehere: open failed: EM0ENT (No such file or directory). It's like this for most of my of apps (and I have hundreds) that are now lost with all their data!
Also, none of the apps that do restore so far link to the market (it says this after restore).
This app really needs updating to resolve these serious issues.

When backing up apps and data again it STILL won't backup some apps!! Any suggestions?
I keep getting an error because I previously uninstalled google earth. The install fails because it can't find the files and I get an installation aborted message. I tried restoring the backup of the app through Titanium backup, but it still didn't fix it. I have a mac and can't find any way to extract the files from the factory image (I can only find how to do it on a pc). If someone could upload those two files I would GREATLY appreciate it and I think it would solve my problem with updating.
Team,
I just recently bought a Google Pixel and was attempting to transfer my contacts and messages and stuff from my HTC One M8 to my Google Pixel. However, my HTC One M8 was still on KitKat (4.4.2) and would not work with the transfer tool. So then I said let me take a TWRP backup of my phone before i start attempting to update it.
I attempted to download a rom to flash via TWRP but it did not work so I naturally tried to restore back to the TWRP backup I took.
Except now everytime I try to restore the backup I took all I get is extractTarFork() process ended with ERROR: 255
I have attempted to google all day with no luck.
Anyone dealt with this and have resolved it?
Thanks!

Did you try updating TWRP? I had something like this happen a few years ago with my S3 and updating my recovery fixed it.

yep, I had updated to twrp 3.0.2.0...still no luck
there has to be a way to fix this
so now even more weird. I downloaded Titanium Backup to try and extract from my TWRP backup, and nothing is there!
how the f is that possible!? does this mean my data is forever gone?
NoCall log, you should backup your calls with CALL LOG BACKUP & RESTORE apk from play store.Messages, you should backup with SMS BACKUP AND RESTORE apk from market(witch also can make a backup of all your sms/mms & call log!!!),so it's an one app for all. Both app make folders on your internal/sd memory that contain files selected by name and date, and you can just transfer this folders from M8 to Pixel and download those apps from playstore on your new Pixel phone, and restore calls/sms..About Titanium restore, isn't M8 ARM phone and Pixel is ARM64(or x86,I'm not sure)?so you can't restore those apps in TB cuz they're different versions with diferent screen DPI,and I suppose they won't work or TB gives you error cuz of that. You can only restore data from TB ,and it's very probable that some of those "restore' s" will give you problem due thing I sad in upper text and also cuz of big difference in Android versions(4.4>7.0+).
I hope you understand what I try to say,English is not my language, and I'm just trying to help you.I didn't by Pixel yet,I plan to,and this is what I would use in mind doing those transfers and restore procedure.
I had LGG4(ARM64),I transfered all my TB folder from M8(ARM),and when restoring ARM>ARM64 ,many of them force closed or mail function. But ONLY data restore allways worked on already installed app.
And about your error and problems on m8 with TWRP,yes try with some other and maybe older versions of TWRP(if m8 is on 4.4.4 ,then maybe latest recoveryes have problem to do backup and restore. In the end,try to flash stock RUU for your version on it,then TWRP+superuser,to try to fix all.BUT BEFORE Ruu Move all your TB and other data from internal memory/sd to computer or some other external drive-in case you lost or overwrite your data on phone.
Maybe someone will point you in right direction, maybe someone already had that problem.

I took the full backup of my M8 using some version like TWRP v2.8.0.? I tried to restore the backup and it kept throwing me that error. So I said, lets try to flash the latest version of TWRP and that is what I did. I attempted restoring through the latest TWRP but still I get the same error. I have also tried to extract the backup using Cygwin with no luck. Titanium Backup also does not see it as a valid backup.
I am still on Android 4.4.2 (I had a backup from 2014 I was able to restore to in the meantime and is rooted).
The only place the data from my M8 is, is in the TWRP backup file which refuses to restore. All data on the phone was formatted and overwritten as I tried to flash a newer rom on it with no success. I have not tried to restore the data to my pixel and will not do so. All I need to do is restore the M8 backup to the M8 and try the methods you listed but I cannot get past this TWRP error. Or, get the backup to extract properly without throwing errors so that I can get the appropriate .db files from within
I am sure there is a fix involved with TWRP or is my wishful thinking sore out of luck?
I had this problem and it took me two days to resolve it. I had a good backup and I know it was good because I had used it several times and it worked. But then after doing some system installs I got the error 255. I tried several things to fix it and nothing worked and I really did not want to lose my backup. What did work for me was to use TWRP wipe function to FORMAT the phone. Wiping or factory reset did not work. I lost the contents of my internal SD card but I was able to transfer most to my external SD card. You could also connect the phone with a cable to a computer and use the pull command in ADB to backup the contents f the internal SD card. Given the choice between losing the SD card and the data files I come to lose some of the SD card. Anyway, a FORMAT worked when nothing else did. I read that this error is caused by a lack of space. When I checked the log it seemed that the restore was failing with a particular file which misled me to thinking I had to remove the corrupt file, but since after the format I was able to restore without any problem, it would seem that there was no corrupt data. Hope this helps someone.
