Data Restoration From CWM - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am running current version of Bonsai 3.0.1 Yesterday, my phone dropped and the battery fell out. When I tried to reboot the phone, there were many Force Closes. I tried fixing permissions twice but it was still having FC issues, so I figured I'd restore the data. Well, I hadn't backed up in several days, so I did a Nandroid backup before I went to restore. I kind of figured that restoring the phone from a backup of bad data wouldn't work and it didn't. Restoration from that backup causes a endless reboot. Sooooo, I restored from a backup which was several days old and it worked fine. But, my data is old for one particular app.
So my question is this: Can I extract data for one particular app and restore it from a Nandroid backup?
Or is it possible to restore the apps only from the Nandroid backup?
If I choose "Restore Data" from the Nandroid backup, I go into an endless reboot loop.
Restoring the "System" will bring the phone back to working, but the data is old.
Yeah, Yeah, I have Titanium and could have accomplished this easily with it, but I hadn't been backing up there either.
I know I'm probably screwed, but if anyone has any suggestions about how to get my data back (for one app or all), I'd sure appreciate it.

I think there is a way. Someone else had a similiar problem and wanted to get their text message data out. It is in the thread below where 00dwan talks about unyaffs and data files. Seems a bit complicated but if the data is that important you will need to be able to identify the data file for that app.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Thank you Thank you. Works great!
I'm having trouble putting the file where it needs to be (I'll figure it out), but I am able to get the information I need from the data file even if I can't get the file where it goes.
It is kinda weird. I put the file on my SD card and then put it into the phone. I copy the file to the clipboard and then go to the directory I need to place the file in. I select paste and it seems to paste the file, but nothing changes. I think it was because I hadn't mounted the system/data as RW. But the strange thing is that when I copy the file to the clipboard from the SD card, the file DISAPPEARS as if I cut it instead of copied it. Anyway, I'll figure it out.
Thanks again for the tip!

Glad it helped. Definitely sounds like it wasn't mounted r/w. Wierd that it disappears from card on a copy operation. Root Explorer is good for this.

[Q] Really bad problem with CWM :(

Hmm..that's a strange problem.
Did you try to reinstall the CWM??
Edit: I pushed the Thanks Button unfortunately -.-
Every little helps
And I've tried, no such luck, so I'll try an older version and see what happens
EDIT: There's a thanks back!
Okay I've tried a different recovery, no luck
What have I done wrong? I seem unable to make any recovery.
I think the problem may have originated when I installed CWM 3.0.0.5, everything was fine before that
This is just a long shot, but have you tried checking your SD card for errors from your PC? The backup file could be corrupted, and that might fix it.
It would probably be a good idea to copy the /clockworkmod/backup folder from your SD card to your PC before you run the check. If it doesn't help or makes matters worse, you can copy it back.
Also, which version of CWM did you use to make the backup?

I used 2.5.1.3 in both cases, went down to 2.5.1.2 to see if it was linked to the recovery itself, it wasn't

If you look in the /clockworkmod/backups folder on your card, in the folder for the relevant backups, what size is the data.img file? Have you got any earlier working backups you can compare it to? I'm wondering if the backup failed part way through.
I take it you're trying to restore data only using Advanced Restore?
I can't think what else could cause it apart from a damaged sd card or corrupt file, but I'm not a CWM expert.

I have looked at the backup is around 1.11GB which is the expected file size, the data.img being around 730mb, it's done this twice, and I've always checked that I've had plenty of space before attempting nandroid, and nothing's ever happened to the sd, i've never moved it or anything

I'm not sure what else to suggest besides checking the sd card for errors. There have been some bugs with the HTC 1.72 stock ROM, which affect all custom ROMs based on it, that occasionally cause sd card errors. This is most likely to happen if you connect to your PC with a USB cable, mount the SD card as a drive in your PC, and disconnect the cable without using "eject" in Windows. It might happen at other times as well, I'm not certain.
This is usually fixed by checking the card for errors through your PC. Some people recommend defrag'ing the card, but I think a check for errors should be all that's needed. I'd copy all contents of the card to a folder on your PC first, just so you have a backup.
Otherwise I've run out of ideas, sorry. Hope you get it working.
What I'll do is transfer my backup to my brother's SD card, and then attempting a nandroid then, if that doesn't work then I don't know what will, but I'm 99% sure it's probably due to a problem on my SD card.

Well it doesn't seem like option, brother's too stubborn, so I guess I'll have to stick with what I got for now until I can fix this problem, it's really bugging me

You didn't say whether you tried checking the card for errors from your PC, did you try that yet?
CWM created an MD5 checksum for the backup, so it's not very probable r/w errors are the cause of the problem. If the data was corrupted CWM would notice before attempting to restore the data.
But if in doubt you can verify the checksums manually. In the backup directory there's a file called nandroid.md5 it's a text file that contains the hashes for each backup file. Compare those values to the actual checksums. If you need a tool use Hash My Files.
CWM 3 backups aren't backward compatible with CWM 2? Then you could try restoring with CWM 2 and see if that works. Then you'd at least know if it's you phone or a software problem.
This may sound silly but did you upgrade clockwork to 3.0.0.6?

I tried upgrading to see if it would solve the issue, it didn't.
And as for md5 checksums, it all checks out fine, everything starts to restore fine, and on two of the latest occasions it will not fully restore data, but will restart CWM between restoring. I really don't know what the cause is :/

I/O error write to sd card (mybackup pro)

trying to restore apps and i get this message! ? fix?
the restore of data was fine but apps wont!
I'm getting this too when trying to restore my data after flashing a new rom. Let me know if you hear of any solutions.
The mybackup website says its an SD card error.. that may be the case, but it was working fine an hour ago on the old rom I had (because I'm new I can't post the link, but a quick google to their FAQ and you'll see what I mean)
I think my issue was due to the SD card. I reformatted it and then copied the contents back again from my laptop. I've now re-installed the new ROM and am using mybackup root to restore my contents as I type this - all seems fine so far
Thanks for the feedback.
What did you format normal or ext or both

I had the same error. I don't find how to fix it but how to recover my data app.
Save the backup on your PC
Execute all .apk in my save folder from your phone
Launch mybackup to do another apps save with data
Copy all file wich are not .apk in the old backup (on your pc) and past them in the new backup folder on your phone (replace all existing file)
And finaly restor the backup, it will restore the data with the app
It's not "user friendly" but it worked for me, it was not a SD card issue
I was having this same issue. Watching alogcat revealed that an apk that MBP was expecting was not there, causing an IO error.
I tried to restore again, this time unselecting that specific app and it appears to be working.
So to fix it, install alogcat and watch for errors as the restore is taking place. This should clue you in on the problem.

This was exactly my problem. Seems like the ****ing program didn't actually back up a damned thing. The folder which was supposed to have the backed-up APKs was completely empty.
I had to restore from an older backup and it worked.
I guess that's just what happens when you rely on free apps.
Just got the same STUPID problem - I'll try the fix above.
The only reason I chose MyBackup Root was because you can do "0-click batch restore" for free which you can't with the free version of Titanium Backup.
EDIT: Backups won't restore. It says "I/O Error". I've had the SD card for a few weeks and it was working perfectly with Titanium Backup. Also, everything's been properly installed formatted and fixing permissions and clearing caches makes no difference.
EDIT 2: After running aLogcat, it says that Mybackup has the following error: "...apps/appnamehere: open failed: EM0ENT (No such file or directory). It's like this for most of my of apps (and I have hundreds) that are now lost with all their data!
Also, none of the apps that do restore so far link to the market (it says this after restore).
This app really needs updating to resolve these serious issues.

Replaced Evo, nandroid missing files

Recently I had to have my evo replaced because the mic died. sure was nice to spend 35 bucks instead of 400. after a little work i got it rooted and flashed and made a fresh nandroid of the new rom. I noticed that titanium hadn't backed anythingup lately but I had made a nandroid before taking the phone in. After a little research i moved the old nandroid to the new nandroid folder (serial numbers and all that) and proceeded to wipe everything and restore nandroid. Now I have almost everything back... except most of my apps. seems they were on the sdcard and now don't want to play nice. I can go to manage applications and sdcard and they are there but greyed out and unchecked. if I tap on one, it will crash immediately. I tried fix_permissions which ran for a few mins but nothing changed, so i rebooted again. still nothing. is there another solution for this or should I just attempt to pry open the img file and extract my data there? If so, where would said app data be? not the apps, but their data for saves/bookmarks/etc. Any help would be appreciated, this has been very frustrating.
Use Root Explorer to check whether the data's there (in /data/data) and whether the APKs are missing (/data/app if they were stored on the phone, /mnt/asec if they'd been moved to the SD card). You probably just need to reinstall the app, though you should backup the data just in case.
seems that the info is there in data/data, but not in data/apps. mnt/asec is also empty, though I recall moving most of my things to sdcard at one point. how can I copy data/data to my pc? can't seem to mount it where the pc will see it, even through recovery.
I decided since I can't mount it for some reason (lack of knowledge comes to mind) that I would just unyaffs the files. how would I push the data/data files back to the phone?

[Q] A Different Problem with TiBu

When I flashed my way to JB goodness, I somehow wiped all user data from my "SD card".
I do have a complete TiBu file on my desktop, but it does not seem to be formatted correctly to be used to Restore from within TiBu.
Does anyone know how I can reformat the file, and exactly where to place it in my phone, so that I can get my data back?
Well I fixed it myself.
The answer was simply to delete the TiBu folder in my phone and replace it with the one from my desktop.

[Q] Titanium Backup doesn't detect any backups after wipe

I accidentally deleted the contents of my SD card when installing a rom, and then I reverted back to CM 10.1. This obviously deleted all of my data, backups, ect but I had TB set up to sync with dropbox, so I had the backups. I wiped the phone and installed TB. I put the backups back onto the SD card and set the location in TB preferences. Now it will only detect a few of the backups. I've tried everything that I can think of or that I found on line but to no avail. Does anyone know a fix for this? I really don't want to lose all of my data.
bump
Did you install the Dropbox app and then enable Dropbox in TB's preferences?
Edit: Nevermind, I misunderstood. Usually when something like this happens to me it's do to apps being filtered out somehow. Make sure you have "All" selected for all the "Filter by..." options.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, that was the first thing that I checked. There are no filters on. I even tried to reinstall TB and delete the settings file on the SD card, but it still won't recognize the backups.
I'm also gonna try to install CM 10 and see what happens. I don't have much hope though.
Ok, more info. I tried installing CM10, but it didn't do anything. When I set it to the backup directory, it only finds 13 backups, but there are well over 100 in the folder.
bump
I'm running out of hope, but bump.
Sorry man, but you gotta bite the bullet.
Grab a drink, go to play.google.com and reinstall the apps you want.
Has happened to me twice... makes a quick, simple flash on Sunday night turn into a tired lug to work/school on Monday morning.
My guess would be that the Dropbox sync in TB was never able to complete. Uploading gigs of files can take some time, even on a decent connection.

I had something like this happen. I put a new rom on and even though I didn't do anything to my backups now in Ti backup it says im missing a ton of them. There more backups then it claims I have apps.
Anyway I deleted all the history for the app, clear all pref , reinstalled and its working now use Ti backup to uninstall its self lol
Seeeveral months later, but I had the same problem. No version of my backups would be detected, etc. Happened after an incident while redoing a ROM. And this is the only thread anywhere that seemed to say anything about the issue.
What ended up working, for whatever reason: I cleared everything from my SD, probably not entirely necessary, just remove TB and it's folder. Reinstall, update TB. Do a new backup of everything. Then I hooked the phone to the computer, copied my old stuff into the folder, overwriting the many that asked for it. When I went back to TB and did a batch restore, it picked up all the previous programs.
Unfortunately, I did have to sit with my phone, and most applications would ask if I wanted to install it, click Install, then Done, then it would move on to the next. Or if it was a system application, just hit cancel and it would skip it.
But it fixed it. So, I'm not complaining too much.
Next step is to delete all backups, do NEW backups, then go forward from there. Will probably see about doing a full wipe and TB backup, which I sure hope works.
My fix
I logged in through adb as root and found that the external SD card was being hidden from Titanium. So I just copied the files as root onto a directory next to the existing Titanium back up (the one just created that it could see) via bash command
Code:
jfltexx:/ # cp -a /storage/6163-6233/TB_orig/ /mnt/sdcard/
I think each new release the Google people decide to move around the SD card and generally make it hard for old data to be seen by Apps on the new system in the name of security or some fancy new feature.
Painful but as I could see the SD card when plugged into my laptop I knew it was really there.
