Perhaps I am missing something, but I have researched much and I have hit a dead end.
I recently inherited an Xperia Play r800at.
I worked to try to install CM9 but found that the bootloader had to be unlocked from Sony.
Went to Sony's site and read through. Looks like it has to be carrier unlocked (from my history with other systems, this is the type of unlock for any SIM card, not just AT&T, even though this is an AT&T phone).
As with plenty of other phones, I called up AT&T and they, after requesting my IMEI, provided me with the unlock code.
The lady tried to be helpful in telling me how, but had never unlocked a "Ericsson" phone.
My understanding after research was I had just put in a non-approved SIM (in my case, a T-Mobile SIM) and it would then prompt me for it.
This is where it gets strange. With the T-Mobile SIM, I booted the phone and it just happily turned on. After staring at it for a minute, I received a call on the T-Mobile SIM. I was then able to get data (kinda, this SIM has no data plan, but EDGE registered), send/receive texts and calls.
This leads me to believe this phone is already carrier unlocked.
But it does not seem to be: As outlined at Sony's page, if I check the service menu, I don't see the "Rooting Status" entry and nothing is there relating to the "Bootloader unlock allowed" bit. Its just missing that whole text.
I tried this procedure:
Power off phone (with T-Mobile SIM), press and hold Search button while phone is off and connect USB cable. USB cable is connected to Mac. Sony Ericsson words come up for about 45 seconds. Then the screen goes black and I get a charging image and the power button turns green.
What am I doing wrong??

I would say this phone was already unlocked. But it is only sim unlokced. What you need it tp unlock the bootloader via alejandrissimo at unlock-bootloader.com. It is $25 to unlokc your bootloader, this is not money that alejandrissimo makes, the software he uses to unlock bootloaders charges a fee for each time you use it, so in tun he is simply charging you the fee while he makes zero money on this...
Go to here:

or

The only phones that can be unlocked via Sony's website are the R800i (international) The r800x (verizon) R800at (AT&T), must be unlocked via the above site.
I had my R800i (Rogers Wireless, Canada) unlocked by alejandrissimo. Everything went smoothly and worked perfectly. I highly recommend alejandrissimo.

I have seen great things about him, but I was confused how he played into the whole deal. Now that I see it, it makes perfect sense.
Thanks all, I believe I will be contacting him soon!

I purchased a r800a phone that is supposedly both rooted and unlocked (2.3.3). It appears to work with AT&T, but fails to work with my provider... T-Mobile. There appears to be no place to enter a PIN code as well to unlock the phone. The app superuser is on the phone, so that is why I believe it may be unlocked. When I insert my SIM card (or any other T-Mobile SIM card), it senses that one is plugged in, but fails to connect to the server when I search for networks. I have created a new APN designed for T-Mobile US, but that has not helped. I have the network mode set at GSM only. I also receive a yellow warning sign that states: "no service selected network (t-mobile) unavailable". Does anyone have any suggestions? Besides the obvious take out the battery or turn on and off the airplane mode of course.
It seems your phone is rooted, but not SIM unlocked. You have to talk to somebody on this forum named Alejandrissimo if I am not mistaken. He can do it for you real quick. Though, this information is just what I have gathered from creeping these threads so if I am wrong, don't hold me to it!
Yes i can unlock it, also check if you model is R800at instead a or i
If yes then is an Xplay 4g locked to att, I just answered you email
I think I am having the same problem. I am on rogers. Is there any chance you could help me out with this?
Again... my SIM works in other phones. Other SIMs don't work in my phone.
I get the message "Your SIM does not allow a connection to this network"
Thanks

Search the forums and google for what is called "trim area" (TA) because At&t and T-Mobile have a few different frequencies they use, the device might not be seeing the T-Mobile ones. I had the same problem a while back, there are some TA flashing programs online through websites or you can contact a user name Alejandrissimo through his Xperia Unlocker website, he can flash a TA file from another R800A that is functioning on T-mobile, he has many TA files for R800A / R800AT that work on T-Mobile which he backed up from users.

Hey 216, I know you had issues with your PLAY on Tmo, however when I got my unlocked ATT model it worked without a hitch on Tmo's network. When I PMd you all those months ago about not connecting it was because I had inserted the sim backwards.. hence my comment above. Yes.... idiot move but if this is the case here then I hope it helps.. if not... its a good laugh.

i got same problem. my xperia J is SIM unlocked. after flashing CFW . i got problem about my SIM " not allow acces network"
i attach SS.. please help
I have a o2 branded xperia play and i was wondering how will i unlock the bootloader. i've checked the service menu and it says bootloader unlocking is not allowed.
I think you'd have to contact Alejandrissimo and have him help you do a 'testpoint unlock'. I think it's 20 bucks to buy the credits for the program that must be used
Fair enought, i will pm him/
I have an at&t branded play. Service menu doesnt say anything about locked. Would I need the same thing? I know the sonyericsson site says I cant

You could go to a local market / shop that sim unlocks phones. As I understand (got an o2 branded one myself and did it) part of that process is unlocking the bootloader as well
Okay, depends how much they are going to charge. I will check it out.
Hi All,
Does anyone know if I can use my rooted SGS2 over in Europe? Specifically I'm using a rooted T989 running TDJ's Darkside Evolution 3 v7 with the venom kernel and the Touch0Color theme. I'm going to the Netherlands, where I think I can just get a local Tmobile (NL) sim and be fine, and the Romania, where I believe the phone will work on the Orange network.
Since the phone is rooted, it should also be unlocked, so there shouldn't be a hitch in just switching the sim and being up and running, correct?
Any thoughts, and especially first hand experience, would be appreciated.
I just want to make sure I'm not missing something completely obvious that makes simply buying the cheap $15 throw away the better option.
Thanks,
That's correct. Just call tmo for the unlock code...tell them the truth-you're going overseas. When you get there get a local SIM and pop it in.

your phone should work in with any gsm carrier to make phone calls but your phone has to be unlocked. I dont know how the data will work since most gms carriers frequency bands are different from Tmobile's.
Ok, so I went to T-Mobile as instructed, and they said they would get back to me in 14 days (I know, right?). So they just sent me the below.
What should I do? I'm still wondering if the phone is just blanket unlocked as a result of the root and the new rom, but I'd prefer not to go buy a prepaid AT&T sim to find out. Can anyone out there advise?
Here's what T-Mobile sent me.
BEGIN
T-Mobile Phone #: 5********9
T-Mobile Sim Unlock Request
Sim Unlock Reference: 5*****6
IMEI: 3*************0
Thank you for taking the time to contact T-Mobile. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide the unlock code at this time. After review of the account we have determined that the device is not in use with the corresponding mobile number. T-Mobile policies and procedures state that the device must be in use on the mobile number requesting the unlock code. If this is a new device please allow 3-4 business days prior to submitting a new request to allow your usage to update in our system.
Thank you,

I checked the numbers twice, and they are correct. But, obviously, I'm using the number with the phone on t-mobile without a hitch ...
So I called T-mobile, and asked what's what. They said that they couldn't even see what my phone was on the system, and then suggested that I call Samsung. Samsung said that they couldn't verify ownership of the phone and said to call tmobile. So I'm wondering what's going on here. The tmobile rep did say that she doesn't think that I'd be able to use an AT&T sim even though I rooted my phone. How would they know though, isn't the normal android stuff unlocked?
Any thoughts?
"rooted" and "unlocked" are not same terms.
I have rooted my phone and requested Unlock code from t-mobile before my trip to russia. Their policies state that you have to be t-mobile's customer for at least 40 days.(though because of circumstances they gave it to me on 39th day)
In russia I bought local sim card, slip it in my S2, followed an instructions provided by t-mobile and had no problems to place/receive calls and use an Internet. Though speed was 3G.
First, Rooted it doesn't mean Unlocked! They are 2 different operations.
You can be Rooted but NOT Unlocked, you can be Unlocked but NOT Rooted
and you can be Rooted AND Unlocked.
That being said, I beleive you have to be on Stock ROM when you
request the unlock code. With a custom ROM they don't recognize
your phone.....
If you don't want to flash back to stock until you get the code, then I would
go to a local cell phone store (not a company, just a local that sells
phones for all major carriers) and ask them to unlock it for you.
It should take about 5 min. and should cost about $20.
You can also go in Romania and unlock it there for about $5.
I know nothing about Netherlands, but it should be the same.....
Good luck and have a nice vacation.
HI guys,
I got an Xperia Arc S that was sim locked, so I contacted orange support and they gave me the code for unlocking, but when I entered the code it said "Could not unlock network", then I checked and the phone was hard locked..
I didn't enter any codes before orange gave me this one, and I bought it new, still its hard locked..
Is there any way that I can somehow undo the hard lock, so I can enter the unlock code??
Also does unlocking bootloader removes sim lock or hard lock??
Thx in advance
P.S.
It's 12W19 so the SETool doesn't work
unlocking bootloader DOESN'T removes sim lock or hard lock.

OK, but can hard lock somehow be removed or something so I can enter the code?
Bump.
Have the same problem with a BRAND NEW Sony Ericsson MK16a Xperia Pro from Fido in Canada.
I had earlier attempted a testpoint and it failed (only then did I find out about the post-12W14 ones not working with testpoint). Mine is 12W21.
I bought an unlock code, but it kept failing. I checked the unlock attempts counter in the hidden menu, and it showed 10 attempts, and that number decreased to 7 (I tried 3 times).
Brought the phone to the shop where I bought the code. They claim my phone is hardlocked!
Tried buying the code from another provider. Code is exactly the same as the one that didn't work.
Any idea what to do?

Was it supposed to be unlocked in the first place? I'd just take it back to the place where I bought it.

What do you mean by "supposed to be unlocked"? It was locked to begin with and I assumed I could just buy a code and unlock it like any other phone.
Before trying to use a bought code, I had tried a testpoint unlock which did not work due to this being a new security model.
Unfortunately I can't take it back to Fido because I'm past their 15 day return policy.
There is a Youtube video of an identical problem to mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aCxH2e47gY
I just want to verify if the new security MCUs are blocking the ability to use network unlock codes.

I don't really know how phones are being sold in Canada, but here in Finland you can just go and buy an unlocked phone. If it then turns out to be locked, of course they will have to unlock it for you.
Or, you can go and buy a phone with a subscription, in which case it may be locked to the carrier in question. YOYO if you switch carriers and still want to use the same phone.
I'm having the same problem with a Fido Xperia U, had 10 attempts initially, now down to 4 after going through an ebay seller mister unlock and now cellunlocker.net, both provided me the same unlock code but it doesn't seems to work.
Mine's a brand new phone, everything stock, I even tried to reflash the firmware with the Sony PC Companion even though I had the latest firmware already.
Same as this guy:

All right, that makes at least 4 confirmed cases of new 2012 Fido Xperias not being unlockable with purchased codes. Let's bring this up with Fido and Sony and see what can be done.

wow, this really is serious eh... I managed to sell that xperia in the end (locked). F*** Sony honestly.
if someone finds a solution please let me know.
I whiling to pay up to 30 CAD to unlock my phone.
Phone was working perfect, and then all of a sudden I get the message "SIM network unlock PIN" when I switch it on. I bought the phone in a sealed box and was unlocked. When I boot using Vol-Down+Vol-Up+Power the phone tells me "carrier info - None" and "Lock State - Locked".
Needless to say, trying to contact Samsung is proving difficult, anybody here got any suggestions?
Doesn't Lock State refer to boot loader?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Did you installed any new ROM? Or update?
i think that except the GNex purchased from Google Play, the others have sim lock with the carriers.
So maybe you bought it sim unlocked, but it lock again with any update or rom change...
Anyways, you can unlock it by using the ****Docomo app, you can find it in this forum.
good luck!
That is a sign that the phone was locked by default, and the store from where you bought it unlocked the phone using an unlock PIN code. You could contact Samsung but I'm not sure if they will even try to help you, I would definitely recommend contacting the store from where you bought it and asking for the unlock PIN code. They must provide it to you, as they used the code to unlock the phone from the network it was locked on in order to send it to you (because you bought it as "unlocked").
I know this because the phones sold from the biggest online store from Romania had the same problem, and the store had to provide all customers with the unlock PINs in order to get their phones back working.
Good luck and keep us updated to see how you figured it out.
