Stuck on LG2 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Just replaced my phone (thank you warranty) but the new phone, still stock, won't update to LG8. Won't update manually either. Do I take it back to Sprint or call them? What else can I do?

What method did you use to update manually, CWM?

there is no Odin tar for the update. The links posted for them are dead. Best way is to go stock with odin and let them just come to you. And if the phone is brand new are you sure you don't already have them? Maybe their being shipped out w/ the updates.

I too have a brand new Sprint S3 that was labelled "updated" but yet it is also stuck on LG2 and looks like the only way to update it is to find the update and download to the sd card.

No. Solid stock. Just went to Settings>Manage Applications>All and cleared data from Google Services Framework and WITHOUT rebooting or leaving Settings, went back up to Systems Update and checked for updates and Boom the update dropped and installed without a hitch and now I'm on LG8!

[Q] Stock ROM 4.0.2 won't update

I have an unlocked Nexus on stock rom 4.0.2. I haven't been using for a couple of weeks. Finally I decided it's time to sell it. So I charged it up and reset to factory settings. On restart it told me that there is an update available.
Sweet! Let's do it. The phone restarts, goes into update mode and then somewhere in the middle it fails. After a minute it restarts and works ok, but the OS is still 4.0.2
This happened about a week ago. Since that time it has asked me to update 3-4 times and has failed every one of them.
Anyone can suggest me how to deal with this? I just want to upgrade it to 4.0.4 via normal way.
why bother updating when your anyways selling it
and why ru selling it by the way ?? is it buggy, faulty or something ??
i dont have my nexus with me yet but i'll can advice clearing that setting (and data if available) from settings and try checking update >> apply update
or simply screw all that manually flash 4.0.4
You have an update for which variant on which carrier???
This could be a download issues that happens. It should eventually work. But I don't know which carrier your on and also there could be OTA traffic.
If you changed kernel /radios/Stock recovery for cwm/twrp /Stock system apps the ota wont work..
If you want to flash yakju or takju(Stock factory images) follow efrant's guide

The only thing I did to that phone after unboxing it is rooting it. Nothing else has been changed.

Not sure what do you mean by that. The update just pops up saying there is a new version available. The phone was bought in Czech Republic, it is not locked to any carrier.
It won't update if you don't have stock recovery.

If you "rooted" by flashing the root files using CWM, then you need to flash back the stock recovery for the update to work.

[Q] Will updating to JB - when it's out - unroot/brick my phone?

Hi Everyone!
So my question today is pretty simple, when JB is out for my SGH-I747m, and I update it OTA, will it remove the root I have installed (superuser), and or brick my phone because I have CWM recovery and BusyBox installed?
Thanks!
Michael
Most likely it wont install if you are not completely stock

It will not update unless you remove root(OTA Rootkeeper) and if you froze or removed the bloatware it may not work as well. It sounds like with the update that just came through this week it has to be pretty close to stock, with stock recovery to work OTA. Im sure there will be ways to flash it once these guys get ahold of the official files with CWM or Odin.

I got the app and it seems very interesting! Can't wait for an update to test it out!
Hopefully JB will come quick through the Carrier in October to our devices!!!

[Q] How To Update Rooted S3?

Take a look in the android dev sections to this forum. If you ever update once rooted, you should be flashing a new ROM (clean or dirty flashing) to receive the next update. Running stock ROM in between a Sammy update and while having the older ROM without the newest update will yield that result.

Wonderful question. I would LOVE to unroot my phone :good:
lol, well if you want to read up on installing a custom ROM, then that is your ticket to experiencing the world of rooted phone glory. If not, I recommend looking up the unroot method...

There are plenty of reasons for rooting but remaining stock (such as: tethering, Droid wall, Titanium Backup to allow me to backup and restore app data, removing bloat, etc).
I have flashed custom rooms in the past on my Evo but right now I am happy with my S3 at stock.

I was in the same boat at you. I put it off for a while but finally decided to update tonight. I followed the steps posted here.
You can update your baseband by flashing a properly packaged official baseband zip, or flash from recovery tool (my preference), like the one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29820376. There are also unofficial, or leaked basebands, available to flash from all-in-one zips, such as the one here: http://goo.im/devs/freeza/Galaxy-S-fre3-LIGFirmwareModemAIO.zip.
As far as the build version goes, that does not have to match your baseband (modem). Most of the ICS ROMs are LG8, although there are some LI3 ICS ROMs to choose from. There's also a leaked build of Jellybean, builds LIF & LIG, with a third leak LIH reportedly coming out tomorrow. Once rooted, you can update your build version by flashing the ROM of your choice, based upon the build of your choice.
One of the top developers, and probably the greatest asset to this community, is freeza. He explained the difference very well here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32095775
That's a long-winded response, but I hope it answered your original question, and helps you out.
Have fun!
Edit: Once you're rooted, you'll still receive OTA update notifications, which will continually annoy you until you choose to update and reboot. Once you reboot, the update will fail because of your custom recovery (you will NOT lose root) and the notification will go away....until the next OTA...

Excuse me for my stupidity but I'm new to android. I'm also using the sprint variant of the s3 and have it rooted with stock rom. However my build number is IMM76D.L710VPALF9. I'm assuming the last 3 are the update versions. What is the current version and how do I update to it?
Also, I'm rooted with Clockwork mod 5.5.0.4. How do I upgrade this to version 6.0.1.2? Will I have to unroot then root again?
Thanks for clearing anything you can up. Don't mean to pirate the OP but I figured I'd post in this thread rather than make a new one. Thanks again.

You can flash a new recovery using ODIN, or Mobile ODIN. I use Mobile ODIN. There's a thread on recoveries here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31894089
As far as the versions, see my previous post on this thread.

That is one of the reasons that I am rooted... so I can use WiFi Tether. I do not it much. Hardly any data at all. But when I am in a spot and need a wireless connection and I only have my phone it comes in handy.
Some other reasons:
- DroidWall: Lets me block individual apps from accessing the internet.
- AddFree: Block ads in some apps.
why would you do that?

Got official notification today on phone. Go to home page, then Settings, then System Update, then Update Samsung Software, download is 81.5 MB
I have not update yet since I am afraid of losing my root.
Make backup before updating. You can backup with CWM. Tar file is attached. Install CWM with Odin.

[Q] How to get 4.4 on rooted S3

I rooted my S3 when Towel Root came out, worked great! Now the TMO 4.4KK is out and I would like to get it, when I try to get it right from the device it says the device has been modified. How to I get the update? thanks
In order to receive OTA updates you need to unroot first. You should be able to unroot by simply going SuperSU settings, hitting 'Full unroot' and reboot. I'm not sure if Towelroot method will work with the new firmware, try heading to the Towelroot thread for compatibility.
Note, on my old S3 with 4.1.2 rooted using Towlroot v3, I can simply disable SuperSU, reboot and my Device Status shows as normal, but I don't do OTA updates on that phone...
