Got official notification today on phone. Go to home page, then Settings, then System Update, then Update Samsung Software, download is 81.5 MB
I have not update yet since I am afraid of losing my root.
Make backup before updating. You can backup with CWM. Tar file is attached. Install CWM with Odin.

The update to ICS is a pushed completely RANDOM. There's no current way to PUSH it straight to your device. The update is to be completed and pushed to EVERY device that currently doesn't have the "update" to ICS by July 20th. The only way to push ICS to your Epic 4G Touch is to Root and put an ICS ROM on it. Other than that, if you currently don't have ICS and trying to update to it, unfortunately wait patiently. It'll come and come randomly to all Epic 4G touch's that don't have custom ROM's BY July 20th.
Hope that clears the air about this ICS Update. Any other questions just ask..
Why do people want the OTA update so bad? Just use the 1 click its already rooted http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229
Do what some guy said!
FYI my wife's phone is complete stock and she has yet to receive the update notification. Don't bother with update firmware in the menu, it won't help.

Stuck on LG2

Just replaced my phone (thank you warranty) but the new phone, still stock, won't update to LG8. Won't update manually either. Do I take it back to Sprint or call them? What else can I do?

there is no Odin tar for the update. The links posted for them are dead. Best way is to go stock with odin and let them just come to you. And if the phone is brand new are you sure you don't already have them? Maybe their being shipped out w/ the updates.
I too have a brand new Sprint S3 that was labelled "updated" but yet it is also stuck on LG2 and looks like the only way to update it is to find the update and download to the sd card.

No. Solid stock. Just went to Settings>Manage Applications>All and cleared data from Google Services Framework and WITHOUT rebooting or leaving Settings, went back up to Systems Update and checked for updates and Boom the update dropped and installed without a hitch and now I'm on LG8!

[Q] How To Update Rooted S3?

Take a look in the android dev sections to this forum. If you ever update once rooted, you should be flashing a new ROM (clean or dirty flashing) to receive the next update. Running stock ROM in between a Sammy update and while having the older ROM without the newest update will yield that result.

There are plenty of reasons for rooting but remaining stock (such as: tethering, Droid wall, Titanium Backup to allow me to backup and restore app data, removing bloat, etc).
I have flashed custom rooms in the past on my Evo but right now I am happy with my S3 at stock.

I was in the same boat at you. I put it off for a while but finally decided to update tonight. I followed the steps posted here.
You can update your baseband by flashing a properly packaged official baseband zip, or flash from recovery tool (my preference), like the one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29820376. There are also unofficial, or leaked basebands, available to flash from all-in-one zips, such as the one here: http://goo.im/devs/freeza/Galaxy-S-fre3-LIGFirmwareModemAIO.zip.
As far as the build version goes, that does not have to match your baseband (modem). Most of the ICS ROMs are LG8, although there are some LI3 ICS ROMs to choose from. There's also a leaked build of Jellybean, builds LIF & LIG, with a third leak LIH reportedly coming out tomorrow. Once rooted, you can update your build version by flashing the ROM of your choice, based upon the build of your choice.
One of the top developers, and probably the greatest asset to this community, is freeza. He explained the difference very well here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32095775
That's a long-winded response, but I hope it answered your original question, and helps you out.
Have fun!
Edit: Once you're rooted, you'll still receive OTA update notifications, which will continually annoy you until you choose to update and reboot. Once you reboot, the update will fail because of your custom recovery (you will NOT lose root) and the notification will go away....until the next OTA...

Excuse me for my stupidity but I'm new to android. I'm also using the sprint variant of the s3 and have it rooted with stock rom. However my build number is IMM76D.L710VPALF9. I'm assuming the last 3 are the update versions. What is the current version and how do I update to it?
Also, I'm rooted with Clockwork mod 5.5.0.4. How do I upgrade this to version 6.0.1.2? Will I have to unroot then root again?
Thanks for clearing anything you can up. Don't mean to pirate the OP but I figured I'd post in this thread rather than make a new one. Thanks again.

You can flash a new recovery using ODIN, or Mobile ODIN. I use Mobile ODIN. There's a thread on recoveries here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31894089
As far as the versions, see my previous post on this thread.

That is one of the reasons that I am rooted... so I can use WiFi Tether. I do not it much. Hardly any data at all. But when I am in a spot and need a wireless connection and I only have my phone it comes in handy.
Some other reasons:
- DroidWall: Lets me block individual apps from accessing the internet.
- AddFree: Block ads in some apps.
why would you do that?

In order to update OTA you must have a stock rom with all the original apps, plus the stock recovery.
Also, there should be an update to JB in the next few weeks.

I'm gonna guess and say the Jellybean update is gonna be 4.1.1 and not 4.1.2.
Man dont bother updating to li3. It sucks. Countless peoples auto corrects no longer work and theres barely any changes. They installed swype into the phones in the li3 but you cannot use it at all.. its glitchy

No doubt, I wish I hadnt updated to li3, The Swype keyboard is not nearly as good as the Swype Beta keyboard and the " Smilies" key doesnt work half the time! Wait for the next update!
Any idea on when the next update might come? I've just been hearing this month. It used to be all over my flipboard, now I hardly see anything about a s3 update. Didn't now if Samsung is pushing it further now like when it was rumored that we would get JB back in August.

[Q] AT&T Software update???

Samsung i317 running 4.1.2 (rooted)
Saw the news about possible updates and went to Software update.
Checked for updates...
A new software update from AT&T is available for your device...
Press Continue
Downloading 165.81MB
Downloads successfully (BTW- Where exactly does it download to?)
This software update will take... yada yada
-Continue
Your device will now restart, restarts...
AT&T logo Installing to ~25% then update failed comes up, device restarts
Log in and Install interrupted message appears saying, The software update could not be installed. (Done is the only choice)
I can use Titanium wipe the data for the system app AT&T Software update V4_1_1303_1_2 and get around the 24 hour embargo but no dice same error.
Not sure what I can do to break the loop?
Thanks!
Edit: Thought I was posting in Troubleshooting not general, sorry!

Can you post a screen shot of your "about phone"?
Be warned ....
Updates being pushed from ATT this time around are likely the pre-cursors to 4.3 which "will" contain knox and a locked bootloader...
If you take the 4.3 update once available ...you will lose the ability to root and more until the devs get it worked out...
That batch is likely the application updates to the rom and modem ???
But the next one is gonna lock you out...g

If it is 165 mb then it is the update from September. It has never been installed because you have a non-stock recovery. The only updates in the september updates were to apps and back end. There is no user difference due to the updated. It is not worth changing your recovery in my opinion.
