All,
I am new to the SGS3 and I am reading around about the LG2/4/8 updates. My question is which is newer, and whats the difference between them? Do they refer to just the baseband/modem version or the firmware as well? I have googled all over and no one seems to have started a thread on this yet. Common sense would tell me that LG8 is the latest but I have LG2 and I was current until last night when I started getting harassed by the stock OS to upgrade. I am rooted so I am not going to take the OTA but just looking for some info.

They refer to complete builds of the software for the phone.
Samsung radios are independent from the rest of the software.. but a new version of the modem is released with each build.
So if you never root, you'll have the latest software build along with the latest radio.

Thanks for the reply. Is it possible to use the modem radio from a LG2 and firmware fr a LG8? I have seen others document that they believe LG2 has best battery but the worst reception so if you r in a great reception area (city) and battery is your concern then you could mix them. I am not in that situation, reception is paramount for me but I was just wondering....
Yes you can. You can also use different kernels as well as long as it's the same operating system. Modems are independent of the Rom and can be mismatched
Sent from Galaxy SIII
I am familiar with kernels and HTC radios. I find it funny that android devices vary so much between manufacturers. I just wasn't sure if there may be incompatability Issues since they name the firmware release and the radio release the same you would assume that had to be matched.
Thank you for your response

Can these be flashed with Recovery 3.0 or should we downgrade to 2.5?
Flashed on CM7 N87 and all is good!
Updated Kernel
Tiamat 4.0.4, CM7 nightly, RA 2.3
Confirmed all is working after flashing the radio update. Though still 1x in my office building due to interference from the verizon/att tower in the back if the property. Sprint refuses to attach to it, lol
I may stand corrected here, but in order to get the full benefit of the new radios you should update your profile and prl. Yeah, it probably isn't needed necessarily considering the pain if your on an AOSP rom, but a good idea because with the profile update it helps the network recognize that you have the update.

The title sys it. I was curious if they had said anything in regards of a patch or fix for the Ics ota update. I went stock ota for a few days and went to sprint to see what they would say. The tech handed me the phone back and said root it.

not entirely sure what is wrong with the new OTA but I have also have problems with the new update and when I took it to sprint, the tech said the same thing "you should root it". I told them I should but it's not my fault of hardware or software issues and after some talk (I know the guys at the store), they helped me get a replacement. Hopefully the replacement doesn't have any problems too.

The story is coming from Samsung directly. You think sprint is going quick to get jb out to us when we were the last to get ics? I'll be very surprised if they update us at all.
Sent from behind you.
a fix for what? If you don't like the ota run one of the fine, bug free ff18 based roms like blue kuban or goodness. Try cm9 or aokp you don't like those. The only reason you have a "buggy" ics build is because you choose to. That said we didn't see all of these complaints when people were running the ff18 leak, the only thing that has changed is the people running it... furthermore why are you posting on xda asking for a patch? Go to sprint users or sprint forums if that's all you're concerned with and want to complain, they'll listen to you there, I thought this was the place where we solved our own problems... not that I think there's anything wrong with ff18.... now flame away instead of spending the time to search and figure out why you're having the issues you're having when plenty of people are running ff18/ff18 based builds without difficulty or issue

I've ran all ics ROMs my phone just don't get the bandwidth with any of the modems released. I went to ota so I could see if they had an answer for why I got **** download and upload speeds. I can't go in there rocking rujs blu Kuban saying hey my phone won't get a signal anywhere here's my phone and fix it. I miss the roms but I can't get any signal I tried different kernels modems scripts and even garbage off of the app market to improve my signal. Sprint is well aware of it. I posted on xda because people seen to get answers and everything else before people find out. Im not asking a question for devs to fix it im asking the community in the xda q&a section. And it's for our phone correct? So that's why im in the xda forum asking the question.

Just a theory, maybe the LAxxx version is for in place OTA upgrades and the LBxxx is the full ODIN/wipe version?
Be interesting to compare the actual files after release.
So we're the first US variant of the Galaxy S3 to get Jelly Bean? Sweet.
I believe the version changes once it hits Sprints hands. I think they have their own system for it

This ota seems to be the same as the latest leak. It might have a few tweaks but probably nothing major. If your already rooted and on rooted stock, just wait for the rooted stock version to update to, or go back to EL29 and unroot and then wait for the update.
Sprint rolls out OTA's in waves though, so your looking at a few weeks in waiting time possibly.

Anyways. I talked to a friend who works for sprint corporate in Overland Park and he confirmed this
This is exactly why Sprint's the bomb. They invest the most out of getting device support of any other carrier.
lol my bad. Didn't mean el29! I was helping another 2 other technicians to reflash software on a E4GT at the same time writing that.

Just a quick question, really. I know that FL16 has been put out for testing and whatnot, but does Samsung plan to do an OTA update to 4.2.1 for our phones in the future, or is 4.1.2 going to be it for us?
Thanks

OK, that's good to know. I'm guessing that if it doesn't happen any improvements that 4.2.1 has will eventually, if not already, be available to be loaded onto the phone in custom ROMs or through other methods?

Would like to know if anyone who flashes this notices problems like with the other stock ics versions. Those never ran quite right for me and had bad battery life. (I think I just vomited in my mouth for being yet one more person to bring up battery life)
All the OTA roms I've used so far have seemed more like alphas.
