Cell tower handoff issues? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So I have the GSM Galaxy Nexus from the Play Store along with the $30/mo T-Mobile pre-paid sim plan. I generally get great reception and near full bars in HSPA+ in specific areas, and other times, the signal is 1 or no bars. I've noticed this a lot when I'm driving, it seems like my device is holding it's connection to towers further away when it should switch to a tower much closer. As soon as I toggle mobile data, I will then get full bars no sooner than a few seconds after toggling. Has anyone else seen this?

I have the same issue with T-Mobile when I am on the train every day. T-Mobile has a lot of dead spots unfortunately. If this is a hand-off issue I would like to hear if AT&T users are experiencing the same thing.

The reason I know its not a dead spot is that the previous day I was in that spot, I had 5 bars. The next day, I had 1. I immediately did a mobile data toggle and it then changed to 5 bars.

Network completely dropping randomly?

This is happening multiple times a day, randomly.
Ironically, I was at a vzw corporate store today getting a half off extended battery and incipio case, and it happened, i was driving home in the middle of a bluetooth call and it dropped, and while at work it drops every 10 minutes.
What the heck is going on? It even drops at my house, where i have "-93dBm" of 4G service... the notification bars will start at full 4G to none, grayed out.
This is extremely annoying and making my phone "work" a lot, thus killing the battery. It didn't make it through a 12 hour day today being in my pocket about 7/8ths of the time!!

I just exchanged my Nexus a couple of days ago, because of this exact issue. So far, I haven't had a single random network drop on the new Nexus.
(Tech support suggested going to a VZW store and having them swap the SIM card out, so I did. As soon as I made it back out to my car, the network dropped again. As I was walking into the Target across the street, it dropped again, so I turned around and went back to the VZW store. They swapped the phone out.)
YES. Had no problems until today (at least that I've noticed). Now its not getting any data. I get strong 4G at my house too. Right now its saying I have 3G but its not giving me any data connection despite what the icon says. Might have to take it back
I had no problem until today. This morning the network dropped out suddenly and hasn't come back. Plugging it in, pulling battering, switching all data settings (LTE/3G, roaming, etc) has no effect. I may be taking a trip down to the Verizon store over my lunch break...
There is an issue with Verizon 3G/4G data right now, it seems to be down nationwide.
I live in Arizona / Phoenix and am experiencing the same. I have no data (3g or 4g) and haven't since my commute into work today. It's frustrating. This isn't a Verizon 3G/4G data issue nationwide. My coworker next to me is using a Droid Bionic and has both 3G and 4G working fine. We just loaded up several sites on her phone. I'm starting to get peeved.

Yep another co-worker with a verizon phone also has data coverage while mine has been skipping out this morning.
That being said, this is not a scientific poll since 99% of the people posting here have GN phones. Are there any reports of problems in the other forums?
Though several articles, this one being one (http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/12/28/verizon-suffering-another-nationwide-4g-lte-outage/) are showing that there is, in fact, another nationwide 4g LTE outage. Maybe her Bionic just switches to 3G properly and my Nexus isn't? I changed it from LTE/CDMA to CDMA and powered off and on the radio. No luck.

Thanks for that. My data just came back up and it's 3G only now and seems solid. Perhaps Verizon has taken down their LTE network to prevent phones from trying to connect to it until they resolve the problem.
I'm getting a 3G icon when I turn off LTE/CDMA and put it at CDMA only. But actually trying to load anything with data (web, Facebook, YouTube) doesn't work. No connectivity.
Yeah, Droidlife reported on the outage for ALL 4G phones. My Thunderbolt is also affected. This is one of the reasons why my paranoid self is happy that I have two phones: one on T-Mo and one on Verizon.

I want to live somewhere where my big problem with the weather is that it's 68 degrees. Anyway, glad to hear it's a network issue and not my phone.
Random signal drops in Baltimore as well. Especially after a phone call. On second phone and still same issue.

Here in Rhode Island, I lost all signal for about 4 minutes, had 3g for about 5 minutes, then got 4g on and off for about 5-10 minutes.
As of now i'm solid 4g with no disconnect or 3g
its probably because of that 3.7+ MILLION devices activated for christmas
be glad we don't have RIM with a 3 day blackout
Yeah, and the problem with the GNex is that, unlike other phones, it doesn't seem to have a "no 4g, only 3g" capability, so when 4G goes down, we have no data whatsoever. Older phones that can switch LTE off are able to hook onto 3G.

Data Constantly Drops

Hi I have my Galaxy Note 2 on jellybomb v 12.1 and i can use it and it will constantly drop data connection for a good two to three minutes...it does this about 5-6 times an hour is extremely frustrating. It's no that I have bad service cause it will still show full bars but no data connection. It has done this on my current rom and 3 other versions of jellybomb. Only thing i can think that it can be is that the phone is switching between towers, cause when I look in Llama under the towers tab it connects to about 3 different ones in a minute, can it be that or just connected to a bad tower. I'm in Los Angeles area if that makes any difference.
It's probably the towers around your city.
That used to happen to me all the time here in Tucson Arizona.
I hopped on the Sprint User Forums and ranted about having my 3G connection but couldnt open anything internet related.
Sure enough the moderators are Sprint employees and they can tell you if they are working on the towers around yoir area.
He even pointed out the exact location and tower they were working on.

I get the same thing too. I'm on Why Not V1.0 and in Los Angeles.
I think it has to do with the later stages of 4G LTE upgrades. There are LOTS of people using the network. Hopefully this settles out when LTE gets solid.
Maybe this is a good opportunity to call and complain about the data...
BTW, I notice that it happens mostly while moving. Could be moving in and out of LTE vs. CDMA areas
I'm having the same issue

Connection/Speed Issue and Tower Question

I'm in the Los Angeles area where Sprint's 4G Network is just being built up. The service is terribly slow, even when on the 4G Network. My question/problem though is, I've noticed that when I go from one area to another, for instance if I'm at a shopping center and on tower that's 3G and then cross the street to another shopping center that has a tower that's 4G... my Data gets all screwed up. Somehow in the process of connecting to a new tower with a different speed, my Data always freezes up and you can't do anything for long periods of time. I'm talking anywhere from 5-10 minutes. I often have to put my phone into Airplane mode and reconnect to get anything moving.
Just wondering if this was a common occurrence? Or if this is just a result of Sprint's crappy network, or what.
On a related note, I've also noticed that even if I'm not going between towers, there are a lot of times when my phone says it has a strong Data Connection on either 3G or 4G, say 3 bars or so, and yet my Data hangs and I can't use the web. Any ideas what the cause might be?

The bars do not determine your signal strength. There's cases where people have no bars but data is still being transferred and get fantastic speeds. I recommend installing Speedtest and depending on your results you should call your network provider on the data issue

Yeah, I have Speedtest. The speeds in LA are awful. Usually range from 0.54 to 0.78 mbps DL on 3G. On 4G its about 8.7 - 9.13.
And thanks for the response, but I still don't understand what the connection issue is between Towers and I'm pretty sure calling Sprint to ask them what the deal is would be a waste of 3 hours.

I may not know what can cause this issue but I can try to help on making it a tad better. Check out my recent post on how to increase your data speed on the Note 2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2253340 and if your data does hang, try going into Settings, More Settings, Mobile networks, and just uncheck and check Mobile data. Hope this helps out.

signal fluctautes

Hi guys,
Lately I have been noticing that my S4 hasn't been holding a signal as well as before. Seems to be this way since LTE rollout in my neighborhood. I get about 1 bar of LTE indoors. It seems as though the phone is more sensitive and tends to drop to E or 0 bars of 4G when it is in my pocket. Once I take it out of my pocket, it flips back to LTE in about 5 seconds.
Is this normal?
I noticed the same thing when LTE came to my neighborhood, south of Houston last week. When it is on 4G, I get full bars most of the time. As soon as the little LTE showed, I barely got 2 bars. Most of the time it's one or no bar. I manually switched my network back to GSM/WCDMA (auto connect). Now that I know Houston's LTE signal has gone widespread, I'll check it when I'm out and about to see if the signal is like that everywhere. But, for now, I'd rather make sure my calls will come in. I use WIFI at home, anyway. Maybe an updated radio will come with system upgrades.
My LTE connection up here in kingwood has been crap for the last week or so too. Kinda annoying, when I got the phone I was pulling 3 bars in my apt now it drops to E.
I have notice the same thing im in fort worth and since LTE I missed lost of calls because my phone is ether on my pocket or in side mg house I het great speeds outside though like right next to a tower lol

same here, lte i barely get 2 bars. been like that since i got lte about a month ago. i assume its just because they are working on the towers and will take a bit to get the full benefits. Though even though i only get about 2 bars, i still get crazy speeds.
I have yet to see full bars on LTE. Everywhere I go I see two bars.

You guys do understand that the bars are relatively arbitrary and don't really tell you much, right? If you want to know what your signal really is you need to look in settings, about phone, phone status and see what the dB reading on the phone is.
Anything above -80 is really strong
Anything between -90 and -81 is all right
Anything between -99 and 91 is a little weak but probably okay.
Anything below -100 is where you start to get into the possible dropped call territory.
Anything below -110 and you are probably not going to get a signal for more than a few seconds at a time.
There are other ways to check this as well with apps that will show signal status in widgets or on the status bar. And with many custom ROMs you can switch the signal bars to a dB reading.
Sent from your phone. You should be careful where you leave that thing.
Thanks for that info.
When I was on the LTE, my db was 104-106. On regular 4G, it's on 87. That's why I've opted to stay on 4G for the time being.
I also get 1 bar of LTE when I'm indoors and then couple bars when I'm outside if I'm still in LTE area. Since Tampa isn't covered in LTE yet and some of my apps don't work at all with 1 bar of LTE, I just switched back to HSPA+ and changed the APN that better fits with HSPA+ speeds.
The HSPA+ speeds I get are just as fast as when I was with Verizon's LTE.

It might if there is a much stronger tower from another carrier near you. However if you utilize roaming it could cost you an arm and a leg.

Now that you mention it I think you are right about voice calling. Maybe it was the data use when roaming that had the potential to be expensive. You might want to check on that just to be sure. Nothing like a $400 unexpected cell phone bill to ruin your day.
Either way you will only see an impact on signal if say an AT&T tower is the only one available as the t mobile tower should get priority even with a weaker signal. At least that's how I think it works....I reserve the right to enjoy reading a post by someone who understands tower priority more than me giving a detailed explanation of how that all works.

Will I be charged for domestic data roaming?
No, T-Mobile does not charge for domestic data roaming. However, once your domestic data roaming allotment has been reached your data services will be unavailable until you return to a T-Mobile coverage area, your bill cycle starts over or you increase your data plan. If you have a Wi-Fi capable device, you may use Wi-Fi to access unlimited data.
How will domestic data roaming appear on my bill?
It will not appear on your bill as there are no additional charges associated with domestic data roaming.
How will I know that I am near my domestic data roaming allotment?
You will receive a free usage alert via text message to notify you once you use 80% of your monthly domestic data roaming allotment. You will receive another free usage alert via text message to notify you when you reach 100% of your domestic data roaming allotment. These text messages will contain a link that will allow you to view your real-time usage. You can also view your domestic data usage by using the MyAccount feature on your device once you have exceeded 80% of the monthly allotment (whether you are roaming or not).

I had the same thing happen at my house in south Denver. It took three different phone calls but I finally talked to a guy in tech support who said that many people have had the same thing happen after the change to LTE in one's area. There seems to be no real solution to it. At my house the signal dropped so low that we couldn't make calls anymore and they sent me a signal booster. With the signal booster in my upstairs window we can use our phones with voice and data without problems.
I've also noticed that you have to be pretty close to a tower to get the benefits of LTE. I've been playing around speed testing with different distances and it drops off pretty quick - between 1/4-1/2 mile is about as far as you can get at least in my neighborhood.
LTE signal fluctuation is an issue right now but I will say that I'm happy that we can still fall back to hsoa+ because if we were to go from LTE to 3g (like sprint does ) I would have been one angry person.

(Q) LTE

Is anyone experiencing LTE problems? I have great Spark signal in my area, but this phone seems to go to 3g all the time. My other phones are always on LTE, so obviously coverage is not the issue here. I will unroot thru Odin and see if it's a root problem.

Not a root problem. Weird part is it only seems to happen to me in areas where there is really strong 4g, like in my house. At work, I am on a weaker 4g signal all day long without issues.
Try updating your profile and prl. Also make sure you have CDMA/LTE selected under mobile network.

I have the same problem. It keeps dropping my signal to 3g..even when it's on 3g sometimes it loses the 3g signal and reconnects to 3g.. the areas I go always have band 41 ...my previous phone was the nexus 5 and the signal was great...never drops connection like this...I thought it was only my phone as I haven't seen someone with the same problem in the forums. I'm in nyc area
Hopefully there is fix soon, it's very annoying to have this data issues.
Its not just your phone mine does the same thing at my work. I switch between multiple different band 25 26 and 41 towers as well as 3G towers. It occurs while the phone just sits on my desk. Theres a couple other threads discussing this. To my knowledge no one has any usable suggestions to help with this.

My Note 4 does the exact same thing. I'm in a fully covered spark area, my old s4 always connected to lte with about 10 meg download. Awesome data offensive note 4 gets 3 to 5 meg download.. sometimes only getting 0.01 upload speed. That's the only thing that consistently bothers me about this phone. Oh yea it also constantly drops lte... to 3g. Feels like it's data is going through a dial up modem. I'm going to check the Sprint forums and see if I can find any good info.
Happened once in one place i was. Lower LTE signal and the phone kept dropping it and falling back to 3g, while my gf Lg G2 kept the LTE connection. I'm thinking they need to tweak the radio software in a future update.
Sent from my SM-N910P using Tapatalk
I've noticed that all the TriBand devices (Anything with Spark) switch to 3G for a bit then connect back to LTE/Spark. I haven't heard anything from work about this issue yet. I've also noticed its areas that have low Spark signal and high LTE signal.
My guess is it's a handoff problem. I will see all bars but LTE grayed out while riding the metro.
There is another thread touching on this too....I am having terrible LTE connection. My wife, who is an iPhone 6 user, gets 4 bars (or circles? lol) of LTE while I can sit next to her with 0-1 bars LTE or 3 bars 3G. I love this phone too much to complain alot about this but I am confident Sprint/Samsung will release an update to fix this.
The exact same problem occurred when the LG G2 got the spark update. It took 8 months for sprint to issues update that was specific to the LTE problem. I had to factory wipe before and after the update to get it to stick. The only difference is before the G2 was updated a toggle to airplane mode would bring the LTE back. That trick does not work on this phone. I will also add I drive alot at my job 6 hours plus a day. I go to the same spots to do paperwork in my truck. My Note 4 will not stay on LTE/Spark in locations where my G2 had a constant 10-15mbps connection.
