Using NFC to unlock device - NFC Hacking

Hi there,
I'm relatively new to the Andriod scene and am still experimenting. I've looked around but can't seem to find a straight-forward answer to my question. I have the Nexus 7 (unlocked and rooted but still stock JB ROM) and tagsfordriod tags. My goal is to use the tagfordriod keychain dongle to enter my device PIN and/or unlock the screen. I've installed both NFC Task Launcher and Tasker. I don't think Task Launcher can do it by itself but can't seem to find any good scripts for Tasker to unlock the device either.
Suggestions?.. and thnx.

By default, I think the NFC reader only reads when the screen is unlocked

It works and it's battery drain free (nfc activated for 10s at most)

Thanks, that's really cool. People who write tutorials and how-tos contribute a lot to our community.

I'm glad you liked it !
I was starting to think no one was interested in it since I had no replies ^^
Let everyone know on the post if it worked for you so others might see it and use it

Wishlist / can this be fixed without days/weeks of research or will I have to switch?

Okay, so I made the jump from iPhone 4S to SGS3 T-999 at the beginning of September this year and my experience has been less than fun. Disregarding all the hardware issues, as far as software is concerned, I've been spending hours every day trying to find software that works reliably. Here's my rant of the biggest problems right now, if you have any ideas, I'd really appreciate hearing back! I was looking forward to digging into mods/hacks, etc on Android later down the road but with these basic functions that I depend on daily in my phone not there yet, I'm starting to wonder if I need to just switch back to iOS until Android is more developed. I actually used be on Android in the days of the S2 for about 2 months, but had to ultimately switch back to iOS because I simply didn't always have the time to download 20-30 clock apps to find one that works decently or test out mods and hacks for basic functions. Sure, it's fun to test try out mods and such but when your phone feels like it's broken, that's no good.
>Stock camera app doesn't allow taking pictures/video/flash at a certain level of battery. wtf, why samsung?! I have yet to find a camera app that does video/photo as well as the stock camera app.
>Image compression & resize tool for when e-mailing photos/images quickly...like in iOS would be great, or even something that actually works would be better. Note to Samsung--most people don't want or need to get an e-mail of your 8mp picture taken on your cell phone.
>Audiobook player that saves my spot
>Least buggy PDF reader with search, annotations and highlighting
>Tethering that works (no luck so far with fox fi and a few others, I'm using T-mobile MyMonthly 4G)
>File transfer over USB on my Mac (Latest version of lion, macbook pro 2.4ghz c2d pre-unibody)
>Find my iPhone equivalent with a web interface as opposed to just text message operation
>iOS clock app equivalent. I have downloaded probably more than 2 dozen timer/clock/alarm apps and none of them do it all while staying on in the background and not randomly closing. Also would be great if I didn't lose my timer if the app or phone has to be restarted/killed.
>Make a complete backup on my Mac instead of backing it up to my SD card and then having to copy that to my computer.
This list used be a lot longer...but with much sweat I have found some solutions or learned to cope, but not for everything that is vital^...

I don't understand what "basic" functions you are having issues with? Other than the camera not working after a certain %, it's not like a PDF reader with annotations and highlighting is a "basic" function.. nor are rely any of the other things on your list except maybe image compression.
That being said, I don't know a camera solution for Touchwiz but on AOSP there are no restrictions to when you can take a picture with regards to battery.
Repligo Reader is a great PDF reader. I don't know about search but I can highlight and annotate.
You need to download the app Android File Transfer to transfer via USB on your Mac.
If you're in Monthly4G, tethering is not included. This is an issue with your plan. If you want to tether, root your phone.
There are plenty of "find my android" apps out there, that work exceptionally well. I use Avast!.
AOSP also has a timer and stopwatch built in, so maybe you should try that.
You cannot backup your phone directly to your computer.
I am more than happy to help you, as I am sure most people here are, but I think you need to lower your expectations on "basic" features..

Don't be so sure. I spent an hour trying to get that to work when I first got my phone, gave up and used Airdroid but for the big stuff I have to use my PC.

Yeah, I spent several hours trying to trouble shoot this and just decided it would be easier to use vmware and try to dig up a copy of windows xp i had lying around...ugh..
joshnichols189: Thank you for your help!
By basic, I guess I wasn't necessarily referring to all stock functions...but on the iPhone I found many apps on the App store that accomplished this task competently. Primarily I used Good reader, but there were others so it seemed like something that wouldn't be difficult to come across. I have found a few apps that provide such a function but end up missing others or are too buggy to use. I will have to check which apps specifically I tried with no success if that will help...will look into Repligo Reader, thanks!
As for tethering: I was able to get it to work on an S2 (i9100) running gingerbread using my MyMonthly4G plan using the native tethering feature. I've rooted my phone sucessfully but haven't gotten around looking into custom roms and such..still using stock (but rooted). If you or anyone here knows any especially good tethering solutions for rooted t-999 users running stock it'd be super helpful to hear.
I will have to do research on AOSP.

Be sure to try Repligo, I believe they have a free/lite version! I wasn't able to tether when I was on Monthly4G so maybe it is different now. If you are rooted you should look at the WiFi Tether for Root app. I believe you can find it easily with a Google search. Also be sure to look into AOSP, you might like it more but if not you can always revert!

Just download wifi tether from play store and that will definitely tether anything you want.

The camera would need to be modded. Someone will likely do this at some point.
Theres a full office suite on sale for .25 that may take care of your pdfs and then some. OfficeSuite pro.
For file transfers, you can use SGS3 Easy UMS. It only works for external sdcard though. Many people have been trying to do the same for internal but no luck yet as far as I know. Search for it on xda.
Also on file transfering, have you looked at a wireless transfer solution? I use SwiFTP and love it. Gives me access to the entire file system on my phone, including /system.
There are quite a few find my phone types like youre looking for that get good reviews. Check cerebrus. Haven't used it on this phone but liked it in the past.
My favorite alarm clock app is Alarm Clock Plus. Been using it for a few years now. No stopwatch or timer but hoping the dev adds em in the future.
For the backup, are you talking about a nandroid type backup or apps and data? Nandroid, no backing up straight to computer. Im pretty sure there are apps thatll backup your data and apps like that though. Never used any though. (And theres always adb!)
Tip: when people see a thread with this many questions and youre not experiencing a critical problem, it can look a bit overwhelming and seems like you may be demanding answers without really looking for them yourself. (Not saying thats your case and not trying to be an ass). Additionally at first read/glance it looks like it could be a lot of work to help you for what many might consider to be simple problems. In the future dont wait so long and ask everything at once. Ask your questions as they come and you cant find the answers yourself.
I saw your thread when it was first posted but didnt reply because I knew it would take much longer than I could spend at that moment.
One last thing, if people perceive you to be threatening to leave for the iphone if you dont get what you want, you are much less likely to find help now or in the future.
Like I said, im not trying to be an ass or belittle or anything like that. Just telling you what some (many?) people may think when they just glance over your thread.
Sorry for the little rant, but I am trying to help you.
Btw, if you're having such bad hw issues you may have a defective device. Majority of people have no problems.
Good luck!

[Q] Question regarding NFC tags

Hi guys. I bought some NFC tags and installed "NFC Aufgaben Planer" to program then. To me it seems this whole thing is very unreliable.
I can program the tags and a sound will be played if I move the phone over it, but sometimes I have to do that 5 or 6 times until the programmed commands get carried out. What are your experiences with this? Does it work flawlessly for you? What do you think could be the problem? The tags themselves? I highly doubt it's the N7100's hardware, such a high quality device...

Are there any more programs that enable the use of the tags, possibly a problem with the program if the tag is being "picked up" but the action is not being carried out??
Sent from my GT-I9305 using xda premium
It could be that program isn't writing the data properly, or the tags are small in data size compared to what you're attempting to write (doubtful). Have you tried any other apps? I've had good luck with "NFC Task Launcher"

I would love to help you, but help yourself first: ask a better question

I have a tag on my cross trainer which starts Sportstracker Pro and Spotify as soon as I place my Note 2 against the tag.
It has always worked absolutely flawlessly.
I use NFC Task Launcher.

Guys, thanks for the replies so far. I have uninstalled and reinstalled NFC Task Launcher and it seems to work better now. Have to observe a bit more.
After a few days: It really fixed my problem. Reinstalling the NFC task launcher and now the tags get executed like it is supposed to be! Thanks everybody for participating in the solution.

[Q] Tuns of newbie questions!

So for Christmas I got a nexus 7 32GB tab, now ive been browsing the site for a couple weeks now reading about rooting, roms and kernals.
I saw the thread in general about one click rooting ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2381698 )
and have decided that is most likely the way ill go, how its shown in the first video.
Now for roms ive been thinking that paranoid android may be the best for me, as from what ive read and understood it doesn't have all those google apps the nexus comes with unless you install the google package? can anyone comfirm this? just want to make sure I didn't read it like a tard.
Now lets say that rom is a good one and I should be good to go, what kernals or kernals should I get?
if the kernel I download I don't like is it easy to switch them out for another or do I have to reset and reroot the tablet and reinstall the roms and kernel? same goes for the rom as well, are they easy to swtich for another? can you have more then one rom on a tablet?
and last of all so say I install paranoid, and decide on a kernel and it all goes well, and is looking good, how do I download apps? do I need the google apps to do this?
super new to this and any help would be much appreciated!

A lot of good questions. Before you start flashing roms and/or kernels you should read as much of each specific thread as you can stand. You need to have an idea of what kind of problems if any users are experiencing, that way you can hopefully make an informed decision. I personally would never read just the first couple posts and start flashing. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely some good roms and kernels out there and there is nothing wrong with experimenting. And yes, some roms do require gapps. And you do need at least some of the google apps (gapps) to be able to use the Play Store. They will tell you if they are not included in that specific thread.
As far as kernels go you need to be careful. Read, read, read! If you start playing with overclocking and voltages you can easily create problems for yourself. Do you know what to do if you get stuck in a boot loop? Or start getting random reboots? Not trying to talk you out of doing anything, hell I use custom kernels myself. it's just that it's not that hard to end up with a really nice paperweight! Sometimes going from one kernel to another you will need to dirty flash your rom or flash the system image to get a clean start with a new kernel. Good luck!
Firstly, use
Since the Nexus 7 is pure stock already, if you have no reason for a custom ROM, you probably don't need it. Just use Closed Framework with Gravitybox module, you can get some customization. Also consider candy shop with zip themed, you can customize your navigation buttons and stuff.
As for kernels, use either elementalx or franco kernels. Those are probably the two most popular.

very much appreciate the quick replies.
Not really trying to mess with voltages or cpu stuff or overclocking. Really just wanted to make it a bit more customizable. which is what I thought the paranoid android ROM would be used for.
Wouldn't mind perhaps better battery life, which is what kernals are used for as well from my understanding?
Ive literally read every forum ( nexus 7, nexus 7 2013, android forum as well ), the top forum stickies and also gone through the pages in the sub forums and such for search of questions I may have.
But from what im gathering I think I just need to delete(is that possible or is it just disabling apps?) and maybe download some more aps for customization like clocks and weather widgets(not sure if that's exactly what a widget is), instead of all this rooting and unrooting stuff.
like when I click the circle with 6 dots in it to show me all the apps on my tablet, I honestly don't want half of them even on my tab
Bascially what I just want is a minimalistic screen where I don't have tuns of icons everywhere as I wont use 3/4th of it such as gmail, keep, people, play newsstand, hangouts, and apps that the stock tablet comes with.
edit: also any way without unrooting to install and snes emulator or play pc or ps1 games? digging some super Mario or diablo clone hack and slashj

You can disable most everything, I have a lot of the google apps disabled that I have no plans on using and all of the apps you mention can be disabled. There are things you can do when rooted to help battery life but there are also things you can do without being rooted. Like turning off wifi always scanning, or always on while sleeping. Adjusting sync. Disabling apps. If rooted you can use Greenify to hibernate apps without disabling them. The paid version of Greenify allows you to hibernate system apps but you have to have Xposed Framework installed to get the paid version to work and Xposed only works with dalvik and not art. Lots of options! Sorry, I haven't used any emulators. Do a search of the whole q/a thread, you'll find something I'm sure.

Really confused about this phone

I just got this phone today (I live in Thailand if that matters). I have the 64GB version. I have had Sony, Samsung, Motorola phones in the past and that is what I am used to. So first thing:
How do I change the home launcher? I don't see any setting for it in the settings menu. I can open up Themer (which I downloaded) and it will open up but as soon as I go to any other app, it will go back to the original homescreen.
Why is there no app drawer?
Why is the phone asking me to accept terms (which says **** like honor the Chinese constitution) and connect to the internet just to view photos in my album? I can't think of any reason that a photo album would need to connect to the internet unless it's going to upload my photos somewhere which I obviously don't want. So I seemingly cannot even view photos on this phone unless I can download something else to take care of it.
I looked at the rooting section for this phone and it seems that all of them currently have issues. Is there no way to just get plain ole vanilla android on this phone? I have never rooted a phone before and the thought is a bit scary to me because it seems like most of the instructions are written for people who already know how to do that type of thing. I went to the Cyanogenmod website and they didn't have one for this phone. Are there no alternatives? I will gladly pay for something like this. I don't want all this Mi stuff on my phone.
Sorry if I sound... whatever, I am just a bit flustered with all of this. The hardware seems nice but the software is utter ****. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Where did you purchase this Phone? From Chinese website? Does it have Google Playstore? If yes then
1) If you just want to change the Home Launcher then install your desired Launcher from Playstore and goto settings-> Installed Apps-> Defaults and set the Downloaded Launcher from there.
2) The Default Launcher on the phone is MIUI Launcher which doesn't have app drawer like iPhone and some other chinese UI.
3) There is unofficial CyanogenMod and some other custom ROMs but there are some problems with each of them like Video recording not working, if working then Audio not being recorded in them. 3G network issues and so on. The process of flashing a custom rom or rooting is little bit tedious and I'd not suggest you in this stage.
Better is to download a desired launcher from Playstore (if you have it) else sideloading and hiding the apps which you don't want to see.
Also note on official Miui ROM you're able to uninstall a bunch of stock apps too.
I'd recommend read up to unlock boot loader. It's a minor project getting this device where you want it, but the awesome battery life and screen size makes your effort worth the time.
Pls also visit official Miui forums there's a wealth of info there. ? ?

OMG, thank you so much for the home launcher tip. That solved the biggest issue I had. My Xperia Z2 had a home launcher setting in the main settings menu. I never would have guessed to look there. Thank you so much. I switched all the default apps to what I wanted and this is already a million times better. And yes, I bought it from a reputable retailer here in Bangkok so I think it's legit. Had Play store on it and everything.

Thanks, I will look into it. Cheers.
I've had the same feeling since my first Mi phone, the Redmi Note 3G. They make some really great & quality hardware capable of very good performances & end up great value for money if you know your way around. But like you felt MIUI is complete horse arse' output these days. It used to be great around version 4 or even upto 5 but then its been downhill since. My suggestion is unlock, install twrp, then you have 2 options
If you
1. want VoLTE then install sMIUI 8.0.1.0 from xiaomi.eu
2. can get by without VoLTE(either not using it at all or by using it through a MiFi modem which some carriers provide in many places/countries now) then install RR5.7.3(thanks to people like @ajsmsg78) which I found to be the most stable with the least issues so far for everyday use. Please thank the devs.
Not that the other like CM13, Mokee, etc are bad but there are issues here & there which prevent me from using it as a daily driver. I'd suggest you take a nandroid backup of all these when you try them each.
If you need more help, drop me a PM. I can help anytime with an hours notice AFAIK.
CAUTION: Read the unlocking & custom ROM/recovery guides 10-20 times so that you've almost memorised every detail if you are a newbie otherwise, especially for phones which have a non-removable battery, you'll end up regretting something later & end up kicking yourself. DO NOT SKIMP ON READING IT AGAIN & AGAIN OR SKIP STEPS else YOU"LL PAY FOR IT LATER.
To unlock the bootloader, you must ask permission from xiaomi. This takes a few days to process. You can read how to do this on en.miui.com forum. Once you have unlocked the bootloader, things will be much easier.
If the "reputable" dealer in Bangkok is Lazada, then you have probably got a patched ROM from China. You can check this by version number.

chill bro here is the link : en(dot)miui.com/thread-327459-1-(dot)html
replace (dot) with the symbol(.)
a word of advice stemming frm my experience, when u enter the phone number in application be sure to enter the same number which ur going to use in the device, and even after recieving the approval sms u might have to give it a few tries before it actually unlocks,(i had to wait 3 days for the approval sms, after recieving the sms tried for 3 days until it actually unlocked, ur mileage may vary)all the best, hope u get unlocked soon
I Googled "xiaomi mi max Unlock bootloader" and got this within 10 seconds :-

Take care that you are logged into xiaomi account and the phone number as mentioned above, if you use phone number as your user name.
That's the only possible error. My permission from xiaomi took only 4 days. Once you unlock the bootloader, things are very easy. Remember to unpack all the zip files!
It took me 2 weeks to get an unlock code the Redmi Note 3 which uses similar internals to the Mi Max. Once I got unlock permission, I had no problems unlocking the phone using the MiFlash Unlock program in Windows. I've unlocked it a few times when I was switching back and forth between MIUI and CM.
And you're right, MIUI is a donkey's behind when it comes to slowing the phone down and doing weird things in the background. I'd recommend rooting the phone, running OS Monitor to check outbound traffic and installing Afwall to stop MIUI from phoning home. I replaced most of the stock system apps with open source equivalents and I allowed Internet access for only a few apps. Bad enough that Google slurps your data, it's even worse to have eyes in China tracking your every online move too.

A little advise please

my partner has aquired a Note 8.0 n5120 and she loves it... I have rooted it and flashed cwm recovery and so far all is working well.
but she wants a newer Android version... So my question is simple what do I do next? Whats the best way to proceed etc and do all roms have 4g function as she wants to keep it?
Looking forward to yor replies

You won't find one bug free. I suggest installing the ported Neo S3 UI and Tab4 TouchWiz. They are cleaner and have better look and hidden options.
I also edited my system.db file and my settings list to tab list.
You can look for Tab4 keyboard and use Xposed with Wanam xposed to tweak and customize the tablet.
If battery life Is a problem... you can try my mod using disable service. It will add up to 4 hrs more battery time and make the tablet smoother.
For myself I am happy with 4.4.2 and see no benefit going to any other android version. Though i use my tablet as a tool not a do everything device like a phone. Meaning it don't sync with Google, yet you can sync with Samsung. If you do use Google apps, they are not as connected, so things are controlled by the user not what google does in background.
