What are the differences between ASOP and modified stock ROM?
Thanks!!!
Aosp stands for android open source project. It is a rom built from the android source code. It is more of a pure android experience versus the heavily modified android roms that the manufacturers create.

Aosp (cm9 by ktoonsez/650) has amazing battery life and seems to work just fine. Cm10 IMO is trash...right now there are just far to many issues. Stock modified ROM you will lose battery faster and lose easy theming/easy customization options. As in center clock...battery icon and widget buttons to name a few. Cm aokp has power saving options too that help a ton.

I'm purrrdy sure aokp is built off cm so calling it trash is a bit much, considering they have the same exact bugs. Aosp means its pure android, how Google intended...no themes or Ui overlays like sense/touchwiz.
Aokp is cool BC there's ton of customization options and tends to give better battery life/performance since it leaves a much smaller footprint on the android os (isn't hogging resources with ridiculous themes and bloatware)
Stock sg3 is cool BC of the motion features and pure stability
ASOP rom will not have
Samsungs Media codecs (no hardware media playback no mkv, xvid support ect.),
wont have cool motion sense features,
no samsungs widgets,
no feature rich contacts ect (google vanila one sucks)
some apps will be missing.
some other features i don't recall probably.
What ASOP will have
less bloat
arguably more customization
basically useless naked OS.

The term is alpha or beta, they don't come close to claiming it's stable yet. CM9 is pretty stable though.

I was running CM9 then moved to CM10, and now im back to pure stock, i just debloated it myself.
To be honest, stock has more functionality to it. and AOSP, you have to build the functionality to your likes which makes it far more user customizeable.
I prefer Samsung rom because visually they look better, have pretty good battery life in my case, and they just everything working in them, as opposed to AOSP that has some kinks in them but still usable.
My two cents.
I do like aosp better normally, but Sammy did a good job with ics, with some theming of course. And my battery is a thousand times better on stock then aokp.

Consider AOSP a fresh installation of Windows 7 done yourself, and the Stock Modified roms similar to an out of box experience with a new HP purchased at bestbuy - full of ****ty, half assed, bloatware.
Most stock roms come in at around 600mb these days... AOSP roms are under 200mb, with google apps.

Don't know if you read my post right I was saying aokp based on cm9 by ktoonsez and 650 is great. Pretty sure cm9 and cm10 don't have the same bugs actually. That wouldn't make much sense at all. Also aokp cm9 by ktoonsez can get 40 hours easy with 3 hours screen on time. Double the Sammy roms so sorry you lose. Also might I add that you should return aosp/aokp and look into the options yourself.

Dude you realize there is things in stock kernels that isn't open sourced yet by Qualcomm, something with dalvik if I remember correctly. This give stock based roms the edge for battery life...
Either way its all in how you use the phone, so showing screenies of battery life is pretty useless.
Just because you like aokp doesn't mean it is the best. Smh.

Your right I didn't read your post after "cm10 is trash" and after some verification, aokp is most certainly built off of cm, haven't you noticed task updates right after cm to include all the bug fixes they've merged? Which isnt to say task doesn't do his own bug fixing, just purely that for the most part, yes, any bugs in cm will be present in aokp. The aosp with better battery life is of course "in theory" because the underlying principles that pure aosp uses less resources and is more optimizes...admittedly this isn't always the case but is true nonetheless.
Damn. I lost the retard game. Its OK, I've got 2 life's left.

Lol your so lost. Cm10 vs cm9 is what we r talking about. Cm10 is buggy RIGHT NOW. It randomly reboots which IMO is trash. Cm9, aokp or aosp based on cm9 has power saving settings which saves a ton of battery. Sammy ROMs do not have this and neither does cm10 nor does aokp or aosp based on cm10. This is fact so stop arguing. You lose once again. READ

My screenshot is old. I use a stock modded ROM by smartguy. Tell the other guy his screens are useless. If someone doesn't post a ss they are full of crap if they do post them they are irrelevant. Amazing.

Debloating my stock rom and JuiceDefender have significantly helped battery life, but it still doesn't compare to the amazing battery life I was getting with CM9, both w/similar usage patterns.
I preferred AOSP ROMs over Sense w/my previous HTC phone, but the stock ROM is a much better experience on the S3 compared to what any of the AOSP ROMs currently offer, IMO. Maybe that will change when AOKP JB and CM10 are more polished. But they still won't have the voice, motion & other features that make the S3 a special device. Those features might not be important to some, but if that's the case, maybe a Galaxy Nexus, where you can have a JB now, is a "better" phone.

The only points I was arguing was that any bugs present in cm are going to be present in aokp, and that aosp should "in theory" should perform and give better battery life, purely on principle. Go troll in the aokp thread with your battery screen shots and ego. I may have lost your retard game, but your still a loser

Honestly i have a feeling ur not on sammy roms a lot or ur just ignorant and new to all this so u dont know what ur talking about... first off sammy roms most of the time have an edge on battery life... and aosp while not having horrible battery still doesnt match... sammy has powersaving to and of ur talking about voltage options then ur dumb i would use voltage control over any aokp or cm included options...

Hey guys as I am almost done with this Rom, before I finish and release i would like to know what you guys want to see in it? The DARKSIDE really cares about user feedback its the only way development gets better. Let me know. Which launcher do you want to use, ADW (stock in cm7), Launcher2 (AOSP,and my favorite), or Touchwiz (SGS2 stock). Did you want some stock apps sammy included because you have grown to use it. Like I said let me know, but know just cause you ask doesn't mean I will deliver, I also gotta look at what's best for the rom. Thanks again. Lets turn this development section around and bring it back.
Welcome to the DARKSIDE!!!

I'd say anything that can be downloaded from the market you could prolly leave out. As for sammy Apps, if you can get them to Work, include them, as long as they're unistallable by the user(I personally don't use them). Did you get the audio bug worked out?

I personally do not like the adw launcher like on CM7. I prefer stock or TW. I have grown accustomed to these two and are the smoothest I have used. Adw has cool features, but I would like this phone as close to stock as possible. If people want adw it's in the market. Or you can add a flashable zip for each?
Either way do what you have to, to make this ROM the best possible and smooth and I am happy.

Hello, you seem new to this. The difference between CM7 and Juggernaut, BeastMOD, Domination, Bombardier, and Android Zombie (AKA TouchWIZ ROMs, I like to call them Touch****) ... the difference is that CM7 is made from the stock gingerbread builds, and then the kernels/System files are ported to the device. TouchWIZ on the other hand is full of bloat, which makes it run slow, and isn't as tweaked and optimized as CM7. CM7 would always be far better than Touch****.
Safe Flashing!

I ran CM !0 for a few days but I used a Mac and MTP doesn't work so its a bit of a deal breaker for me, but in all fairness its Extremely stable to be an Alpha build. My first android phone was the G1 and then on to the Nexus One so i'm a sucker for AOSP based android roms and for Cyanogen Mod in general so ill be running it when the MTP gets sorted out on my Mac.
I tried Wanams rom, I remember him from my SGS2, Hes a great Dev & its really stable as well.
The best all around so far for me is AndroidUser00110001's Rom linked below. I've found the wifi disconnect problem that i was having with the other TW Roms is gone and it has had the best over all balance of performance and stability.

Also, son of a *****, godaddy didn't auto-renew my domain. Guess I will need a new one.

Definitely AOKP. Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean versions are awesome. I've yet to find any bugs that keep it from being a daily driver. In fact I've found none. But I haven't used it that in depth much, we shall see.
But I put my vote in for AOKP. By far the best, and I only flash for AOSP based ROMs anyways. :good:

Thank You!
Not to be rude or anything but all one has to do is look at some of the popular ROMs in the development sections to get a pretty good idea. The popular ones tend to always be near the top, provide great documentation and support, and provide pictures and videos to get you a great idea of the experience. Just spend 30 minutes looking over the various options, and flash a few to see which one you want to stick with. Flashing ROMs is so easy nowadays that it really is just a matter of how much time you are willing to spend playing around with them. I'm waiting for Jellybean ROMs before I really make the jump and satisfied with the performance of stock (with Nova launcher) until those JB ROMs become pretty stable and can be used everyday.
You really can't go wrong with any rom currently out. I've tried them all out and they won't disappoint. I'm currently running Freeza's rom and though it's touchwiz based, he really changed it up.

Hey thanks for the recommendations. I just got the phone yesterday and so far im enjoying the stock experience and yes im even enjoying touch wiz. Which of these roms offer the best battery life? That's what I'm looking for currently on the touch wiz rom.

For me they have all basically been the same in regards to battery life. At a minimum I can pull 16 hrs on battery with 4+ hrs of screen on time with each rom. I'm not really into playing games on my phone so that helps. However, battery life is really user dependent because we all use/set up our devices differently...so what may end up being good for me may not be the best battery life for someone else. Definitely give each one a try though and see which works best for you
I'm definitely going to try them all, but god damn are all TW roms almost 1gb in size? I thought sense roms with big @ half the size.

Not all of them but if they're full of addons, such as FreeGS3 by Clark, then it can get big. Freeza's rom is probably the smallest coming in at about 498MB

Clark44 rom is so big because he includes Aroma installer which lets you pick and choose what mods you would like to include, therefore all mods and tweaks are downloaded. Hth

Devs should start making Bare Bone versions.Just out of Blazer 1.7 i removed over 40 uneded apk files! That slimed the rom by almost 200mb,but its still too large when cm is only 200mb.
Removing all this junk improves speed and battery life greatly.

No offense but a question like that is not going to get u an answer.. word has it all 4 main tw roms are basically running the same mods and it comes down to looks right now.. plus it kinda depends on your own set up..
I switched to odexed blue because I like blue.. I would make a nandroid and try a couple of them.. flash a different Rom and try em for a day or two each.. see what works best for you. That's the beauty of xda.. you have options..

I don't think that's necessarily true. I've seen a few people post that FreeGS3 is noticeably smoother and less laggy than Blazer. Not knocking Blazer since it may have some other features that people prefer.
For my previous phone (EVO 3D), I tried several Sense ROMs and there was a significance difference in performance among them. Is it such a stretch to assume that a similar variance would be present in custom TW ROMs?

Well I wouldn't know as I've only tried stock, freeza's fre3 and blue odex since coming over from the og epic.. I guess my "word has it" comment came from reading http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29890564 <-- that
I guess my point is obviously people like all these roms, or they prob wouldn't always be the top four threads all day long...
It really depends on your own preferences as they all appear to be stable and running well..
Again my advice, pick one and flash it.. if u feel like trying something else then try that too.. If somethIng goes wrong restore your backvup.. again.. the beauty of xda.

I get your point but the beauty of XDA is also in the ability to solicit opinions to make an informed decision. I don't think my question was that out of line. It's not as open ended as simply asking what the "best" ROM is.
Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone has thoroughly tested both Cyanogenmod 10 and AOKP with Jelly Bean. If you have, what are the performance differences, as well as the default theming, and most importantly, battery life. I'm currently on Bugless Beast which has no modifications, so I'm not really interested in which has more features, because I'm sure they're both full of them. Currently I get around 2 hours of screen on time (CDMA Nexus), which I consider good, so If you've experienced more than that on either of these roms, please let me know. I plan on switching to one of them when I receive some good reviews. Thanks

1) Make a backup of your current ROM
2) Flash either AOKP or CM10
3) Try said ROM out for ~1 week
4) Make backup of that ROM
5) Flash next ROM and try it out

This is not meant to be rude, but just the dead honest truth.
Seriously, if you're not into customizing, stock. Stock ROM, stock kernel, just stock. Unless you have Verizon since there's no JB update I don't think
If you really want either of them, here's my "short comparison"
AOKP: AOKP is probably one of the most customizable ROM out there. It has all the settings that I personally care for and use a lot. On top of that, faux kernel helps this ROM run like a boss! Not a smoothest ROM though to be honest. Also not all the features from ICS is in JB yet, so keep that in mind.
CM10: This also has a lot of customization, but not as customizable as AOKP. (That's only by few features though). CM is known for how stable it is. I personally had no issue with CM when running it on my GSM phone. However, there isn't stable version yet.

I never tried CM9, but if it's anything like CM10 M1, AOKP Jelly Bean latest build has a bit more features. But I could personally care less for. You should just backup your ROM and try AOKP if you ask me. If you don't like it, you can simply restore.

Yeah, but CM is a bit more stable in my taste. But nothing to write a book about AOKP is very stable, like you said.
You can't judge a rom if it isn't labeled as "stable" by the dev.
I am using AOKP since the
early ICS builds and i am using their JB versions now. They have tons of customization (and much more to come) and although they are considered nightlies (actually they are weeklies or so ) they are pretty stable and fast.
I have always used franco kernel with it and it is just great.
I currently use AOKP build 4 with franco r281, a black wallpaper, black theme and auto brightness. I get 4 hours of on screen time using the extended 2000mah battery. Besides the on screen time the rom is very battery friendly, with no random wakelocks.

I love Paranoid Android. In PA3.99 RC2 (Android 4.3.1), there are a lot of feature and customization. In PA4.0-BETA (Android 4.4.2), there are a few extra feature but nothing relevant at the moment. Devs are working in recode features, but they say that want to reduce kanging. You can try CyanogenMod or AOKP (the last has a lot of customization) por any derive from that. You have to try them and then decide what you prefer.

I am currently on the CM-Remix rom 1/11 release and have been on it for a few days, so far I like a lot of the customization features. I would suggest reading what other users have experienced in the thread and determine which one you want to try. This has been the only 4.4 rom that I have used for more than a few hours. I am weird about customization so I tend to find one with lots of features and stick with it for a while. (trying to curb my flashing addiction.)

CM-Remix has a lot of cool features, probably would be my favorite but I can't get the wakelocks figured out even after reflashing etc. For me, slimkat is a second in features but most better in terms of wakelocks (for me). Translates into almost double the bat life for me

I understand very well that such questions may annoy people, but my question is actually more specific. I'm not looking for the best rom with the most features. I just want to upgrade to 4.4. But I'm afraid to do so, as I use my alarm a lot (to wake up for exams in time). If the phone randomly reboots and the alarm is gone for some reason that would be very silly. So I'm looking for a phone that has the smallest chance of such situation (alrm gone) happening.
So CM11 nightly has the smallest chance of that happening?
Thanks in advance.

From my own experience, CM11 doesn't have the smallest *chance* of that happening - because that NEVER happened to me at all. GNex is my part-time alarm clock and it always wakes me up at the right time. But yeah, because we install different apps and use different settings, YMMV
