hi, I'll been looking through the forum for hours and was unable to really understand how to execute my issues. Therefore i have to create this threat to asking for help out of no choice ( I rooted my phone 2 month ago using zergrush method and recently I wanted to upgrade my busybox and I uninstall it before reinstall a newer version, but when I am uninstalling busybox, It stopped half way and say there's some program that stop it from uninstall fully, and then my root access couldn be granted to my busybox anymore and it couldn be install back to my xperia play again. so do my Titanium backup couldn get the root access from SU. but others root access software remain ok. I reformatted my SD card and phone hoping to get rid of the error but my system apps(screen locker, silence mode) is GONE! and the root remain in my phone but my preinstalled data gone. I decided to do a flash to reset everything but Im scared and unsure. any pros please do advise whjat should I be doing on this issues? thanks in advance.
These are the steps I took 10 times so far:
1.Do a clean flash of 2.3.2
2.Root your phone with Gingerbreak
3.OTA to 2.3.4
All Fixed!
4.Restore all your apps with titanium(if you didnt delete backups)
5.Install CWM for locked bootloaders
6.Do a Nand Backup if your phone is working correctly and save it to your PC
BTW just download busybox installer from the market and you dont have to uninstall it before update, just launch the app!

Or you could flash the proper Cwm for unlocked bootloader if it is unlocked. Don't think you need to be unlocked to flash official roms

So, i want to try Jelly Sandwitch 5.0. It seems nice to me and everybody tells that this is a very fast ROM.
I have unlocked bootloader.
This is how i tryied to instal JS 5:
- root my phone with DoomLord method (downgrade kernel, root then replace the kernel with the .587 one).
- install cwm with x-parts
- reboot and enter the recovery menu
- wipe cache, data, dalvik
- install from zip
Jellybean have an installer that let me choose different option like the launcher, keyboard, some apps and some other options.
I've tryied 3 times using different option like install link2sd, wipe data, and so on, but everytime it ends up just showing me the sony logo, then i have to reinstall everything, root, cwm, etc.
I can't post in the Jelly Sandwich thread on the developer forum so i ask here if i'm doing something wrong.
Also, can you suggest me a rom good as JS5?
Thank you in advance (and sorry for my english)

Try flashing doom kernel ver.5 . Many users have the boot loop issue with stock kernel.
With doom kernel it works (for me too).
First flash doomkernel, than wipe cache, dalvik cache, data, and format /system
Reflash the rom and it will works.
The only kernel that works on my Arc with Jelly Sandwich 5 is XArc.
I tried other kernels but always get bootloops or crash just after typing my pin number.
XArc is great but don't provide HDMI.
JS 5 is probably the worst JS version. Maybe you should try an older version.

if you have an unlocked bootloader and installed a custom kernel, I don't think you need x-parts to install CMW as the kernel contains it?

I have an unlocked bootloader but not a custom kernel with cwm in it. Do you have a link for a guide about installing cwm without x-parts?
I tried it also and i got bootloop. Then i repaired phone and gave up...
After unlocking bootloader, find a custom kernel for your version of android ie: Ginger bread/ICS, DoomLord is a popular choice.
Keep in mind there is a version that can't be rooted, from memory its .62, in this case you have to down grade to .42
Flash the kernel:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
You will have root and custom recovery installed.

hi..
i have a stock rooted and bloated xplay (not much time to fiddle) w/c i bought a year ago.. so i was thinking of changing roms and i plan on using the phone for gaming.. i have read some thread about pros/cons of custom and stock-based. others say that the stock rom is still the best for gaming (debloated of course).. so my question is..
should i go for a custom rom..? or stick with stock..?
if i'll stick with stock.., what's the best baseband(?) ..? currently mine's on .42...
what are the apps w/c are safe to delete..?
as for overclocking.., what is the best kernel that you'd recommend..?
thanks...
Xperia NXT lite with doomkernel
i was looking into that actually...
but some cons have given me second thoughts.. like wifi issues and unsupported touchpads (other roms).. that's why i'm asking about stocks..
this will also be my first time flashing custom roms.. kinda scary.. wehehehe...

I think you should stick with the stock. This is the most.stable & supports full touchpad.
Custom roms are not as stable as stock...
I think you can just use v6 supercharger or supremacy script to make your rom fast...
[ you have to do it manually with smanager]
Press thanks if I helped..

thanks.. maybe i'll try them both...
i just want to ask for the list of bloatwares.. : )
thanks
First of all, you have to give MORE info about the phone: locked/unlocked bootloader, phone model.....
I advice you to get a stock-based rom, instead of sticking with the stock one, because those are inproved with some tweaks that cannot be flashed on your current stock, and have built-in apps and are already debloated.
If this is your first rom flash, just follow this steps:
BEFORE DOING ANYTHING, get the stock firmware that fits your region and stock android version if you want to go back from here or anywhere else
- root with any method, I recommend SuperOneClick
- install ClockWorkMod via RecoverX
- install TitaniumBackup from the market, and backup all user apps you want have in your new rom (be careful, some roms and kernels doesn't go well with backup restoration. Check the rom's thread for backup issues)
- reboot into CWM recovery and do a nandroid backup. It will save everything and you can restore your phone to its initial state, to the point you can not tell if it has had any changes
- flash the rom following the instructions given by rom builder
- flash any addons you want after rebooting at least one time, every addon separately (1 reboot after every addon)
- if you want better performance, get supercharger v6 or supremacy script as said before
Now, the stock firmware you got at first is to repair your phone if a nandroid backup restore doesn't do it.
If youwant to go back to stock, just restore the nandroid backup. If you want to take it to the carrier to fix it for whaterever reason, you also have to unroot and delete any app that uses root permissions, like TitaniumBackup. Then, when you see your Play is exactly as it was before doing anything of this, you can take it there safely
And finally, the best baseband is -36 cause it has the more balanced stats between signal reception on gsm/wifi and battery consumption, but some roms use -64. If you're adviced to flash a stock firmware before the custom rom flashing process, thats for installing the needed baseband and some other components. Happy flashing!!!!

All custom kernels support overclock and all are good at it. Just flash the kernel according to your rom cook's advice
And if you were wondering, custom roms doesn't have any problems/bugs if they are finished. You should expect bugs if there is only the first or second release of that rom, but if it's finished you'll be fine by following the steps exactly as directed.
You can try The JokaWild ROM 'S.B .69 Tweaked ROM' FINAL (v3) and DiXperia 2 'Everlasting' | Performance. Stability. Experience. if you want a stable, fast rom. Those have given me good results, but if you want to know which is the best rom you have to try them all cause they don't run exactly they same on all phones, even if it's the same model. Maybe NXT or Aurora rom could be better for you....

While you're dispensing advice, may I ask which upgraded kernel is best to use with R800i_4.0.2.A.0.62_(1253-4437)? That's what I have on my device.
Is there any benefit to actually installing cwm with RecoveryX as opposed to just loading it with fastboot when needed? That is, will I be more likely able to launch it in a crisis if it is installed on the device?

RecoverX is the easiest way to get CWM. Think about it as a quick 3-step process that you will do only one time. You don't lose anything
Additionally, I don't know what process are you talking about, since flashing a clockworkmod.img, installing the CWM app from the market and RecoverX have permanent effects all of them. The only exception is when you change kernel and it has a built-in recovery, you get the kernel's recovery instead of the original one. I recommend RecoverX because it supports the widest range of phone models and firmwares (I have an r800a, but it was not listed as a supported device in the CWM app, so...)
And again, it's always better to have a custom stock-based rom than just the 4.0.2.A.0.62 stock one

Well, I took your advice, and I installed doomkernel and jokawild
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1176502

I only wish I had known sooner what was in the addon packages for jokawild, that could be documented a lot better. basically that's where all the apps went.
now I will probably reflash and do it right
no cifs in doomkernel
JIC anyone is wondering
CIFS and NFS were taken out and then he moved on to the ray or something

So, have you had a happy flashing? I hope so.....
About the addons you don't have to reflash everyting to install them, just flash one by one, separated by a reboot (you can reboot directly into CWM instead of loading to homescreen everytime, that woluld take ages to flash all of them ).
If you were wondering about root, it's not necesary to flash the root addon since doomkernel is already prerooted, so you get superuser since the first boot with it
I have had a pretty happy flashing, in that nothing went horribly wrong
I do think I more or less know what I'm doing now. Heh heh.
As you can see from my sig I am now running lupus v6 and it's been very stable, smooth, etc. And I added the cifs and ntfs modules. I didn't reboot between everything which is probably why I had to load the wifi modules over again, so I'm very glad they were provided. But everything is working great now, thanks.

I don't know you, but I can access my pc files from my Play with "ES file explorer" without even installing CIFSmanager. The changelog in DK's thread says he removed it, but at least for me it works .
To access from the phone to pc you have to put the folder you want as a "shared folder" and give "total control" permissions to "all". For accessing from the pc to phone just do the same with the folder on your sdcard connected to pc and, go to tools/connect to network device and select that folder. Now you can view your files and do streaming by opening the folder on ES file explorer in LAN section and from "My PC", where it appears as a hard disk with drive letter
e.g. music on "Xperia PLAY R800a" (H:/)
Hope this helped. I'm on DooMKernel v14 with jokawild but this has worked on other ROMs

I rarely use command prompt to perform operation cause I prefer to use flashtool instead, and the only time I installed CWM was through RecoverX, so I haven't experienced the difference.....
Yeah I've used the smb built into ES but I prefer to use the smb functionality built into the Linux kernel to using libsmb, which is what's happening when you use es file explorer, or pretty much anything else with built in smb browsing. I also don't care for ES file explorer's interface. Of course, open manager doesn't have smb support...
I have figured out the mtp/msc stuff some time ago.
anyway, pretty much all the kernels have a recovery, some of them have too many recoverys in my opinion so it doesn't really matter. but if you use fastboot boot boot.img then it boots without installing. I don't know if this works for anything but recovery, like if you could boot a kernel this way, probably not. I like command-line stuff. I do use flashtool's gui for ftfs though, of course.
a little off topic..
what should be the sequence..?
from stock..,
nandroid BU, flash pre-req stock ROM, unlock bootloader, flash custom ROM,..?
- or -
nandroid BU, unlock boot loader, flash pre-req, then custom ROM..?
will i lose root access when i unlock the boot loader.?

you have the sequence right, I don't know if nandroid backs up the kernel. I would guess no, but I could be wrong, and hope I am.
you don't care anyway. you can reflash back to a stock kernel. just make very very sure you never flash a cdma to a gsm or a gsm to a cdma. a, at, i are all gsm... if you do that you need testpoint reflash as far as I know.
you should also do a titanium backup, that gets you all the apks on your system now, handy for restoring any games on your current rom that aren't on your new rom.
Well, you can unlock your downloader at any time, by IMEI method through Sony webpage or through alejandrissimo's testpoint method. It is permanent, so it doesn't matter if you change Rom or kernel, it will remain unlocked forever , and if for whatever reason you have to take your phone to carrier for warranty, it will appear locked for Sony (I already did it, and they didn't void my warranty)
Just follow the steps I gave you, it's not that complicated. You can flash first the Rom or first the kernel, it doesn't affect anything, except when you change android version (GB to ICS or something), then flash the kernel first and then the new Rom.
Flashing a rom doesn't change the kernel, so if you're on DoomKernel and "A" Rom, you can switch to "B" Rom and stick to DK, IF IT'S ON THE SAME ANDROID VERSION.
Also you can change kernel while keeping the same rom
And respecting to nandroid backup, it saves everything but kernel, baseband and some sections of internal memory that you should not worry about. That's why you're able to restore a backup with the same or other kernel without any worry

I have searched high and low, used many programs and the extent of my vocabulary on google to try and find a solution.
I figured it would be a good idea to ask rather than lifelong searching.
I just recently bought the Xperia Play because I am somewhat an avid gamer and love this phone.
After a while it gets annoying to be able to put only 4 apps on my SD card and a message popping up saying internal memory full, with 20+ gigs left on the SD card, Knowing in later android updates, most apps are allowed on the SD card, as well as holding home and killing recent apps.
I am looking to ROM my phone or unlock the bootloader, whatever is best.
My bootloader is locked, running 2.3.4 firmware on a Canadian rogers (under virgin on unlocked carrier/sim) R800a
If there are anymore specs needed, I would be happy to provide.
The build number is 4.0.2.A.0.42 if this helps.

Rooting. 42 is easy. You can use zerg rush method or with superoneclick.
Then install links2sd from market, uninstall unused system apps and move your apps to sd.
If you don't care about warranty, you can unlock your bootloader, install kernel that have 600MB instead of deafault 380MB data partition and install any rom you like.

Thank you very much for the reply.
I'm ready to superoneclick but shouldn't I install Clockwork Recovery Mod?
I do not care about warranty as I bought the phone second hand anyways.

Kernel and clockwork recovery is in same file, so once you flash kernel, you have recovery too.
My advice, since you don't care about warranty, is to do next:
-Root your phone first (so you can make backup with titanium backup or mybackuproot)
-Backup your apps and data (calls, sms...)
-Unlock your bootloader
-Find some rom from developer forum
-enter flashtool in flashboot mode, flash .79firmware (no need to boot into that firmware, just power off when it's finished)
-enter flashtool in fastboot mode, flash kernel that mached your rom (i recommend lupus gb v12 if your downloaded rom is gb, lupus ics/gb v7 (stock or cm version) for ics/gb roms or lupus jb v8 480p for jb roms.
-Enter recovery (power on, then keep pressing volume down/up or back button) (for lupus kernel is volume down)
-Flash your rom with "install zip from sd card"
Remember, jb roms won't boot on ics kernel, so if you got bootloop, most probably your rom does not match flashed kernel. Look in rom desription what kernel is compatible with it.
Sent from my R800i using xda app-developers app
I figured out a way to put CWM on it and that works fine, tested recovery on reboot.
I'm following up until the bootloader.
Now how will I unlock my bootloader?
My rooting status says bootloader unlock allowed: No

I'm glad i helped :highfive:
I can't recommend any rom, because there are so many good ones. And which ones...? GB, ICS, JB, CM7/9/10, MIUI, AOSP, Hybrid...
You better check roms here and find what you like.
So, I went with the Aurora Play ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2124442
And the turbo kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2187172
Step 1: put ROM on SD
2: Flash Kernel
3: Reboot into recovery
4: Wipe everything
5: Install ROM
I wouldn't say im in a boot loop but I can access recovery and it's not loading into the ROM
Would not installing, [Firmware] [GSM] R800i 4.0.2.A.0.58 or R800i_4.0.2.A.0.62_phoenixvendor.ftf have mattered?
Like the .79 firmware you mentioned, I did not do that.

Latest firmware only matters if you want bigger data partition (600MB vs 380MB stock)
Did you set type of rom in turbo kernel? As i recall, there is an option in recovery to choose wich type of rom you are installing. And since you want Aurora play, you should choose stock-GB (it's been a long time since i used turbo kernel, i can't recall where exactly that option is)
Ok, I found that option and set it to GB stock ROM on slot 1. Still nothing though.
It boots up says Sony Turbo and then goes blank. The LED/backlight of the phone is still on though.
Should I choose something else other than Turbo?
EDIT: There are 2 options to set as stock GB, set both as stock and booted up just fine.
Now running Aurora Play, Thanks for all your help!
Guys i really need help, I'm using an xperia play and i had just unlocked the bootloader and then flashed a the trueancestors ics rom and the LuPuS_zeus_Stock-gB+iCsv7-full kernel. Now it turns out that i didnt like the rom so i put it back to stock, still with the lupus kernel. Everything was working however i wanted to have the doomkernel v14. So i flashed the doomkernel and it was working however the wifi had erroros so i changed back to the lupus kernel. Again everything was working fine now. I then found out how to fix the wifi problem on doomkernelv14 so refrlashed that kernel. Before i reflashed the kernel i deleted the trueancestors isc rom as i didnt like it so i thought it would be ok. After the flash i tried to reboot the device, and it was stuck on the bootloader for doomkernel, not in a bootloop just stuck at doomkernel bootloader. I tried to fix this by going to recovery (clockwork mod) and then did a factory reset, wiped the cache and data and the dalvik cache as i saw these online for instructions on how to fix this problem. Still i had the same problem, stuck at bootloader. So i tried somthing different and reinstalled the trueancestors ics rom, and tried to reboot the xperia play, again stuck at bootloader. Im sorry if this was a bit long but I AM LITTRALLY BEGGING FOR SOME HELP! Please make a suggestion as to how i can fix this ASAP. Can it be fixed?Thank you for you Advice it is very much aprecciated. Ive posted this somewhere else in which i couldnt find but i really need help on this, please can anyone help. :crying:

Im sorry if this was a bit long but I AM LITTRALLY BEGGING FOR SOME HELP! Please make a suggestion as to how i can fix this ASAP. Can it be fixed?Thank you for you Advice it is very much aprecciated. Ive posted this somewhere else in which i couldnt find but i really need help on this, please can anyone help. :crying:

When switching kernels with different partition layout you have to delete data and system partition in fastboot mode.
I'm lazy to type again so here is a link where it is explained already:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1849536&page=100
You can prevent future problems by wiping data and system partittion from CWM and THEN flash new kernel that have different partittion layout

I havent tried this yet, becuase i need my dad to allow flash tool to work (Parental controls ffs -.-") however i saw the thread and i saw this part saying enter these commands "fastboot erase userdata and fastboot erase system i undestand how to get the command thing open but how do u enter these in, and what i mean is do you just open the command thing and just paste these in or do u have to right click somthing open comand promt here and all the stuff then enter them? Also these steps u listed, everything is fine its just my lack off knowladge for some of these things which i do apologize for
" Fully working steps, that is 100% working:
1.flash ftf with unlocked vendor partition (.62 or .79)
2.flash lupus gb kernel
3.erase system and data from fastboot
4.enter recovery and flash your rom "
Where do you get the unlocked vender partition, and which one is better .62 or .79 and if u could send me a link as your helping me i think ur choice of links for this is more reliable than mine, and again this is greatly appreciated.
" Fully working steps, that is 100% working:
1.flash ftf with unlocked vendor partition (.62 or .79)
2.flash lupus gb kernel
Download file name R800i_4.0.2.A.0.79.ftf from Xperia Play Index - ROM'S, FIRMWARE, KERNEL'S, GUIDE'S, THEMES, MOD'S second post have firmware files
Guide how to use flashtool you can find at [GUIDE][18th Dec][4Noobs] Flashing A FTF File Using Flashtool
Flashing .79 or .62 firmware is necessary if you are planning to use lupus gb or icd/gb kernel - and you only need to do it once.
Flashing kernel is same, but when pressed on lighting icon, choose "fastboot"
3.erase system and data from fastboot
Ok, i made a zip for you. Download it from attachment, unpack to anywhere you like and double-click file named "start". Power off phone, press search and while keeping it pressed, plug in usb. I don't think you need admin rights for that, but:
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ROM PLACED ON YOUR SD CARD! Just in case, because that program will erase everything from your phone.
You should be able to enter recovery and/or flash your rom/restore your backup.
4.enter recovery and flash your rom "
Also, read some sticky threads, they are there for a reason
Again im really sorry to bother you with this, but what if i dont want to flash the rom, becuase i didnt like it in the first place so i went back to stock, however this method of returning to stock was to flash the R800i_4.0.2.A.0.62_(1253-4437).ftf file. Now what it did was return it to stock rom (AFTER i tried the rom i didnt like) and unrooted the phone, i dont know if it returns the phone to stock firmware, and if the method of the system data wipe thing with the command prompt deleted everything, what can i flash? Little more explaination as to why im asking. Before this boot stuck thing hapenned i had used that same ftf file to return it to stock and unrooted. I re-rooted the phone and then flashed the lupus kernel. Everything was fine. I wanted to flash the doomkernel because like a dum nut i wanted to show off that i could overclock to 2ghz ( if i wanted to) as if alrdy stated before and did so. I think you can only flash zip files from your SD card so the ftf file wont be able to be flashed while on the device. So what do i flash? Should i just flash the rom i dont like and try return it to stock, then flash the ftf .79 firmware again after re-rooting the phone, then flash the doomkernelv14. In short i want to stay with the normal gingerbread 2.3.4 with doomkernelv14. Again i havent tried this yet and also sorry for these long rambly posts, i just want to give you as much info as possible in order for you to help me. Thank you so much for your solution btw much appriciated.:good:
And almost forgot i also want it back to rooted but i can do that myself, i just thought i'd specifiy it just incase its worth anything.

Remember, kernel must much rom. Gb stock kernel for gb sony based rom, you'll get stuck agan in kernel logo if if you flash kernel that don't match rom/firmware
Just read in kernel thread for info on wich roms it works

Everythings fine at the moment and i dont want to make any more dumb mistakes so im just going to ask if wiping the data and system partitions in CWM still deleted everything. I just recently got all of my apps back and all that good stuff, i just want to know if they will get erased if i do this. My deepest appologies for bothering you with something so minor and selfish.
Sorry another selfish request (Damit) but when ever i flash the doomkernel v14 my wifi gets error, i was wondering if u knew how to fix this, if u dont and have the free time or feel like it, direct me to somone who does?

Yes, if you wipe data and system then EVERYTHING is deleted. All your apps (data) and even android OS itself (system). You'll have to either flash new rom or restore backup after wiping system
Doomkernel need wifi modules to be installed from CWM recovery to have working wifi
I'll attach it
Im wondering about my battery life, because it seems to be draining faster. Im using no frills cpu with the lupus kernel alowing me to overclock to 1.6 ghz. I set my higest on 1613 mhz and lowest on 249mhz using the smartassv2 governer. any idea to whats going on ?
ok...i screw up my xperia play... dunno what to do.
hi guys, been a noob after i fed up with my xperia x8 now i having a xperia play f or 2 years and try to install a custom kernel and roms but i end up brick my phone. it just stuck at logo "xperia free play". it still can enter cwm recovery mode but when i use the method press the arrow thing then plug in the usb cable to pc , it seems my pc did detect my phone but cant show up my memory card in 'my computer' window. The i try to use fastboot & flashtool both can detect my phone after plug in. Here is what i do before brick:
first thing i did on my phone was to upgrade the stock kernel 4.0.2.a.0.42, then i unlock the bootloader, root it, and start download the custom rom without download the requirement kernel. after that, i install CWM using fast boot, put the custom rom to sd card, wipe user data, bla bla bla, then install the custom rom, the next thing i see is the problem i talking about earlier. So i try to using the service update from SCE but it just say im using a modified kernel hence i unable recover it using that method. so, i try to use flash tool x10 (i cant get any working download it keep saying error 404 link, this is the best i have now) when i press the flash it come out red words with error usb ...the thing is my phone cant get detected by my computer.... What to do or it is over? (p/s : i download the flash tool & adb package winrar file & the custom rom i mention is close 2 perfection)
I know is a bit long but I really need help on my phone, i still have a x8 here from my mom and mine is xperia play brick for 3 days now i still cant find a way to solve it. PLEASE HELLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPP. THANK YOU FOR THOSE RESPONSE~!

Man i was doing so well before, but im now stuck in a bootloop. I cant enter the recovery menu as the phone just keeps bootlooping. Also with lupus kernel the menu doesnt come up. I just erased the user data and system with ur zip from before and flashed aurora play with lupus v12.5 kernel It worked like everything else. i got more curious so i did the same thing erased user and system data then flashed gin2jellybean with the same kernel.( i followed ur intructions from before on how to flash roms n stuff) Everything worked again. I wanted a new kernel so i flashed extreme kernel r3. phone got stuck in a bootloop. So i erased user data and system data, then flashed and ftf stock rom and then flashed extreme kernel r3. everything was working. I went into titanium backup and uninstalled some system apps and accidently deleted the one that let you see the running services to see available ram. So i cleared data and and system data reflashed ftf stock rom in flashmode ofc, and extreme kernel in fastboot. I got a bootloop, so i tried all the different kernels that i could and i cant get into the menu for recovery. Can you please help me once again, i'll thank every post.

For most part, you are doing it right, but, to solve problem with recovery, you should use "eraser" AFTER you change kernel

Naturaly, it will drain more battery BECAUSE it's overclocked.

I think you should repeat the fastboot process once again, so:
fastboot erase userdata
and fastboot erase system
then just flash the kernel you prefer.
I had exactly the same problem with my play bootlooping after flashing some kernels. and this solved the problem for me :victory:
sorry for my bad English, :crying:
