One X Screen Clicking Noise - HTC One X

Hello everyone. Just got my HTC One X the other day from Carphone Warehouse and I love it as a phone but Ive noticed a couple of build issues in the past couple of days. The first is a minor one but the volume rocker seems to be a bit loose and rattles around slightly however I'm not bothered about this as much as I am with next issues. Half way down the left side of the screen seems to be a bit loose and makes a noticable clicking noise when pressed slightly harder than you normally would. Its something I can live with as it is however I just wondered if theres any possibility of this worsening/causing anymore problems?? Im still in my 28 days so I just wondered if anyone thinks its worth getting a replacement handset from CPW or if this is an issue across all the One X handsets.
Thanks.

If I were you, I'd cream my 28 days. Insist on a replacement. I know I would.

Yeh he's right. I have had three HTC one x and they all had problems the first two had yellow dots the first had a creaking body and the third is perfect accept the three buttons underneath the display the back light is weak the middle is okay the left and right is very low poor build quality next phone I get will be wp8 I'm also considering the Surface RT because it has office and a nice looking fresh UI and brilliant build quality with two out put speakers and a USB 2.0

Is it just me or does build quality suck?

I've just recieved my replacement for my first HTC desire which had a dead pixel near the top of the screen (wish i kept it, such a minor issue :S) - I got it replaced for a new HTC desire which arrived today, which hs dust under the screen right in the middle of it - a bigger problem.
2 Phones unlucky, and managed to convince TMobile CS to replacve it as opposed to repair, so, I'm getting yet another one tomorrow.
Has anyone recieved a faulty replaement for a faulty phone or is it just me? :S
First HTC phone, very very bad experience, feel like cancelling it :/ (then again miainly for Tmobiles partially ****e coverage)
Funny, mines the most solid phone I've ever had, and I'm a long time Nokia user.
I'm not denying its solid, but one most annoying issue on a phone like this is the screen, and to have a faulty screen twice sucks.
I'm also worried HTC are rushing out desires now, so build quality/batch testing is effected - another reason i regret just sending my old one off now grrrrr :S
I'm guessing you're an unlucky chap. My Desire is of excelent build quality, no dust whatsoever. The backside locks firmly to the body, covering the battery verry well.
Every product has stories of unlucky customers. For me the three HTCs ive had have been the best built and most reliable phones ive had.

Well, it seems you're using the wrong wording. A dead pixel has nothing to do with build quality...they don't make the screens they buy them from a third party. Dust under the screen, again a rare occurrence that happens to the best devices. You had some back luck, but the consensus seems to be that you're an isolated incident.
Still asleep - but yeah, you're right, typically I'd use build quality to assess how solid it feels and its qualty, it does feel solid, not plasticy. However Dust does describe something not working correctly in the bulding process, but yeah - isolated - doubt a whole batch would have such an issue.
Trying to remember what word to use to describe my scenario
They say third time lucky, hopefully that one will work, since HTC desire is the ultiamte phone atm, and if i'm going to invest in a phone now might aswell invest it into an android. Failing that, might sell it on ebay or equivelant
There are worse things than dust that could get under the screen.
Imagine if the person assembling it, sneezed! :O
oh shiiiiiiii lol!

It's not just you, I've had exactly the same problems but the other way around. The first phone I received had dust under the screen, replaced it and now have a dead pixel. I however prefered the first one because I couldn't notice it as much.
I'm getting my third as well but they are CONSTANTLY out of stock. Both times I've received the phone I've asked to have it replaced within a few hours of receiving it (after charging and noticing the problem) and both times they've been out of stock for about a week afterwards (vodafone uk). I mean its good if there is lots of demand for this device but I just want to get one for myself that is fine out the box!
Like you said 3rd time lucky i hope!
Unlucky about that
I waited 2 weeks to get my first replaced, failing that the third you can send of to HTC for repairs, or ebay it and end up with a cheap contact.
It's you. Build quality is very good.
I find the build quality is not the best.
On front screen above the back/search button. I can see key back light coming out of a tinny hole, where the bottom part, the so called chin connects to the screen body. Then on the top left and bottom right of the battery cover. It doesn't seem to fit as tight as on top right and bottom left. I'd say that poor build quality.
I guess the word yous are looking for are "poor QC"
and when someone mentioned sneezing, I remember some article about some poor dude finding squished bug inside a screen on a vaio laptop LOL.

what's the gap2 the left of optical for?

anyone else noticed this?
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
the gaps between the optical pad and the menu button (left) and the back button (right) are equal on my device.
Not sure I know what you mean
There seems to be a little gap between actual trackpad button and the edge of the hole it sits in. If I am thinking the same way you are, look at the pictures -

Now I don't think it is a factory defect because mine doesn't sit "right in the middle".

Thank goodness I am not the only one
Also...now that I am thinking about it, couldn't people living in the U.S. now get some sort of warranty help through HTC U.S.A.? Since U.S. Cellular is going to be carrying the Desire, it would only make sense that the United States division of HTC could possibly offer some sort of warranty help
(I remember reading through the white warranty booklet that came with my Desire, and it said that HTC offers a 2 year warranty)
No gap on my Desire.... :/
Obviously this is down to manufacturing tolerances, if you make sure you always push it slightly to the left when ever you "click" It'll probably be central after a couple of weeks
Mine is in the middle too. Tolerances....
my one got a gap too.
but I hardly ever use the optical trackpad other than taking picture so don't bother me much.
I think its bcoz of the chin design the button is a bit misaligned.
Got no gap here, i'd think its manufacturing tolerance to.
Mines got a slight gap on the left as well, seen two other Desires which have the same, no biggie really, it still works fine and is only ever really noticeable when in a dark place and the backlight is on.
my optical has now malfunctioned see my other post

Poor Build Quality

Am I the only one noticing problems with this phone? I'm already on my fifth brand new Inc2 in a month. Faulty speakers, loose and falling apart charging ports, vibration device not working, and now the light up home buttons on the bottom have bright white circles around them clearly visible through the black cover.
Am I expecting too much from these phones or is the quality just going to ****?

My speaker is quiet and I hate it. My charging port isn't loose but the housing around it is. My vibration is fine. And only my search key has the white circle.
Its going to ****.

My battery cover clicks a little bit, but it doesn't bother me much. Other than that its a great phone IMO.

Yup I have all that and more. I try to look past it all until the Incredible 3 comes out. I think Verizon likes killing phones by turning them global *cough* Droid 2 *cough* or maybe HTC suck at making a sequel for a phone. Then again this phone was meant to be incredible s not 2 that was Verizon's fault. Honesty I played with the Evo3D and it made this phone look like yesterday's garbage. This phone is 3 steps forward and two steps back from the original. Oh btw WTF why does our front facing camera suck more than a year old Evo I noticed this comparing my friends Evo while checking out the Evo3D

Damn dude, I must have gotten lucky. I'm still on my first DInc2 and its holding up better than any phone before it. feels solid, only a slight slight rattle in the usb port thats barely noticeable, and i have no such white circles around my capacitive buttons. I love this phone!
Speaker works fine.
Charging/USB port is slightly out of spec, but is not loose and works fine.
Vibrator is smooth, works fine.
Backlight on softkeys is a little wonky, but nothing annoying.
As I mentioned in another thread where you mention all these things, you somehow keep ending up with the short end of the stick. Most of these problems you have are not common. I've seen people that go through replacements a lot because of legit problems but they are pretty rare. I've seen it happen on all devices I've owned, and I still have my original first purchase devices in my desk drawer (I should really get rid of them).
Mine works perfectly, is built solid and is the best phone I have owned to date. I cant think of one thing that I would want to complain about, in regards to the phone.
Damn, you guys are lucky. I just keep getting the shaft when it comes to quality control.
I was very happy with the last Inc1 AMOLED refurb I got. Perfect. Then that stupid ass gingerbread radio had to go and kill it.

I'd also like to mention I'm not crazy or just coming up with ****. I love this phone and just want it working correctly like everyone else's Inc2 around me.
Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk
Loudspeaker on back ain't great but not bad either. Vibrate isn't as strong as I'd like it to be but that was true for my Eris too.
I couldn't be happier with my phone.
I'm on my second DINC2. The first one had a really annoying buzz on calls in the earpiece speaker. When I was at the store getting my replacement, I immediately noticed a difference in the vibrate feedback. The new one was a LOT stronger.
I probably would have never noticed the circles around the buttons. Mine only has the circles around the search and back button. I guess that it doesn't really bother me.

My Dare was my favorite phone before moving to Android. No replacements on that one.
Yeah the white circles are prominent and around the search and back buttons.
And honestly I wouldn't care about the white circles because the speakers and vibrate work but I have the opportunity to get a brand new Inc2 with potentially none of these problems. This might be my only chance before settling down with this phone for two years.
The vibrate was VERY strong on my last Inc2. So strong that it started to shake itself loose and rattle.
Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk
You must be cursed or someone at VZW must have it in for you.
Admittedly this is my first android handset (and is making me realize that what I've been loving about my nook color isn't having a tablet but simply having an android device) but it's also quite possibly the finest phone I've ever owned.
No complaints at all about the speakers - in fact it's got the best call quality out of the last several phones I've had. The external speaker isn't super loud, but it's loud enough for me - it's a phone not a boom box
The usb port has no play at all, if anything it's too tight.
The vibrator works and seems both more powerful and smoother than any other phone I've had.
Yes, I can see a bit of light leaking through the black mask around the soft keys...but only if I'm really looking for it. Not nearly enough to be distracting. The way they seem to "flash" as I tilt the phone and the light source reflects internally is far more annoying. But really that's the only thing I could come close to complaining about on this phone.
The only other thing I can think of to complain about is a complaint I have about every phone on the market today - the camera lens is too exposed with no protection! My last phone (a Samsung Omnia) the camera only lasted about 10 months before being nearly useless due to scratches on the lens. I can only think of two phones off the top of my phone that have really nailed this. A old LG flip phone my dad had back when they first started putting cams in phones that had a sliding lens cover. And my wife's Hero which has a clear cover over the lens that's part of the battery cover so if it gets scratched you can at least replace the cover. But since pretty much every phone on the market right now has a lens that protrudes I can't really consider it a complaint about the inc2 specifically.
I couldn't ask for a better phone than this one! No light leaks, tight usb port, loud speaker, and both battery covers are tight. I bought the extended battery and it protects the camera lens and flash lenses pretty damn good from scratches and cracks

Pretty much share the same experience.
I do however have a TPU case and a ZAGG screen protector if that adds anything to my build quality opinion.
I got 4 "like new" DI2's today as replacements for our fascinates. All but one of them have incredibly weak vibrate and haptic feedback, with haptic being barely noticeable at all on two of the devices. One has a pink tinted screen and another has faintly visible horizontal lines running down the display. Yet another device has two small scratches at the bottom of the screen. Every device has the circle backlight issue, but in different degrees. Definitely seems to be a great deal of variability in the manufacturing process.

Pressing the screen

When I press my HOX screen at some pressure at the bottom it gives some color inside. Whether this is a problem?
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Put some pressure on your monitor (Providing it's an LCD or similar). What do you see?
Why are you pressing a capacitive screen in the first place??
This is a problem, the glas should never touch the lcd.
And why press capacitive touchscreen? While playing games and caught up in the action? Since it is a tegra3 phone, chances are big
Just did a test . Whether the phone can withhold pressure inside the tight jeans and under the pillow while sleeping.

just noticed that mine now as well has that creak on the left hand side..basically when i press the left hand side i can feel it not being in the right place and it makes a noise when i push it down..right side is fine. spoken with my carrier and they said they can not replace it they need to send it to get worked on...and then once i send it they get a quotation of £20 and if i accept then they will try and fix it..i declned that and said you must be joking. spoke to HTC and they said they can not replace it but send it in for repairs..i do not mind that as long as they do not charge me..but they said the carrier should replace it if i am getting dust under the screen...here is hoping..dissappointed..as i really like this phone and already spend like few bucks getting cases for this phone S3 looks more and more appealing now...

And if you don't think it too is going to have its own set of anomalies and QC issues you're a tad naive. Go check out the GN forum, it's the last phone Samsung released. It's a great phone but far from perfect. As is the One X. And as will be the SGS3.

s2 came out never had any issues with that Barry mate. Look i do not want to turn this into a flame war..We both know how it was last week. Nah after clearing my head now i have two options.
One i am waiting an answer from HTC till tomorrow afternoon they said whether they will replace it for me or send it for repairs. If they say they will replace it i have a winner. If they say they will send it for repairs then i will go with my network provider. At least if they fix it i know i shall not have the issues as it will come back brand new.
And the good thing i am covered by warranty as it is the stupid flex issue that everyone is facing..Damn thing creaks like hell when you press on it

I had one of the first SGS2's sold in the UK. It was a train wreck. Here's a list of issues I can remember:
1) Devices overheating to the point they shut down
2) Huge color temperature variations in the displays
3) Wireless (both Wi-Fi and 3G) that was so screwed up Samsung was pushing out updates weekly
4) Fingerprints on the inside of the display
5) USB ports that released and got pushed up in to the phone
6) Flashing covering the camera lens from inside
7) Light showing through from the edges of the bezel
8) Bad headphone jacks
If you had one at launch you have either short or selective memory. After about two months all the QC issues went away and we all know how great a phone the SGS2 ended up being. I kept mine for eleven months; the longest I've ever kept a phone. The point being, no phone is immune from issues especially when they first come out.

If you think about it, the devices we're buying today are about 1000% more complicated than just two years ago. A lot more advanced crap is being pushed in to a smaller space. At the same time, what we're willing to pay at the high-end is kind of fixed so the manufacturers have to juggle all of that while putting out phones at twice the frequency. My biggest ***** with all of them is the obvious lack of testing that takes place. I can forgive some of the QC issues (provided they go away eventually) but the flickering thing is kind of hard to overlook. As was the GN 2G radio problem. Alas, I think it's going to get worse before it gets better. It'll be interesting to see how Samsung fares with the SGS3. People's expectations are so high I think it'll be hard to meet them.

Spot on mate spot on. What would you advise to do mate? I mean phone is fully functional and nothing wrong with it. It is just that gap on the left hand side which is not really visible unless you really look at it and then when you press hard on the left you can feel the phone creaking and trying to adjust the shell to get in place.

The repair, not really

Sent it off for repair because it had screen fitment problems out of the box (screen was loose but didn't ripple, no yellow spots), the casing was perfect and not damaged. When I got the device back from repair, screen was replaced and tightened, but it now ripples on normal touch, has 1 dead pixel, light bleed around the bezel (can be seen in the video, top part of the screen, also around capacitive touch buttons), yellow spot in lower right corner when the phone gets warm AND the casing was damaged in several places.
I'm sending this video to HTC and will demand either my money back or a new device, it is unlocked, but this cannot be caused by software, so they should accept the warranty. Video:
Did they tell you which repair center they sent it to?

In my opinion this is the repair shop faults.
Either way this is unacceptable. Very sloppy work.
I am very curious how HTC will resolve this.
My last resort is to send my HOX or any other future devices back to their so called repair or service centers. Your major problems will be resolved but additional cosmetic problems will surface such as this gentleman's screen. My first and only experience is purchasing an EVO 3D gsm version from a local yahoo auctions seller in HK. I didnt want to nitpick but the screen had leaks of light when viewing in datkness and it wasnt aligned properly. So i thought what the heck..send it in for repair or servicing...got it back in a week with less light bleed but some of my capacitive lights werent lighting up completely. As if they never checked after other problems were resolved. I ended up selling it for a good 150 dollar loss since i am extremely picky with these screens. Just last week i got the HOX and the darn thing seems to be perfect from the factory but guess what..that small yellow spot pops up when the phone heys to 36 or 37 degrees... Much more annoying than a single dead pixel. I am having an EXCHANGE for another unit but i doubt they will be perfect. For some people stating they have no problems at all...they arent looking hard enough. There is always something imperfect with all the htc phones i have bought. Since the hd2. But whatever...their outter appearance are simply the best looking and i just couldnt pass it up.

@Tw1tchy I just know it was serviced by HTC Germany.
I think I'll get this one replaced, and when I get the replacement, I will just going to sell it and be done with this One X story, too much risk and I don't want to send my phone 1000 km from Croatia to Germany every time I find a problem.

So, long story short.
I received my device which had screen flex and PUSHED the sevice senter to replace the LCD.
Got back the device today. The LCD Module (LCM) has been changed. But, they made some pinch on side of polycarbonate body, while replacing the LCD.
Also, the screen is more flexible in both left and right edges with loosely fixed screen on left center. Hope it becomes hard after some use and heat.
Just for information, i have replaced 3 devices and sent the fourth one to service center three times till now.
I have given up now & keeping the device. After owning HTC from HTC Hermes times, this is the first device i have seen this much quality control issues.
Earlier, I was confident enough to order HD2 and EVO3D from UK (Iam living in Dubai) when they release those.
Now, i lost that confidence with HTC. I still didn't unlock the device for the same reason. My first time with any HTC device without modding the ROM. HTC should be proud of themselves
I have light bleeding on my one x as well. Its quite annoying but you have to get used to it. I'm not risking sending my one away after I have already been without it for a month
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
