My buddy was telling me about how there is a site that allows people to hire others, and they give them a "free place to live, and food" in exchange for their manual labor on their farm, or whatever they own. Does anyone know what he is talking about?
Honestly, no clue. Why don't you ask your buddy about it?
Well..he drinks a bit, ha. And i don't know if it's real or not, so i figured i would ask the masses. He said he found it on the internet, but forgets it now..
At that point I'd personally just dismiss it, but just me.
What he's describing is feudalism.
Eh, i usually would. But i want to move around for the next couple of years, and this would be perfect.
Ranchers do this in Texas and Wyoming quite a bit. Room and board for labor on the ranch.
It's HARD work and LONG hours and not for alot of people but it's a job and a place to stay.
I dunno.....kinda sounds shady.....

Does..but would be awesome.
I heard about this too, it's kindof like a craigslisttype thing, but just for odd jobs.... you post what you need done, and what your willing to pay, then people can respond and do the work. I never caught the site name, but it does exist....
Why do you ask? And here of all places?

I would love to move around and just experience the world..do random stuff, ya know? And i am on a variety of forums, but this is probably the most tech savvy, and would have greater results.
Sounds like slavery to me. Working for the minimist of wages, grits and tattered clothes.

I am looking at the house sitting thing..seems rather neat. But i would still have to make some sort of money to pay for bills and such, ya know?
I have heard of couch surfers, but see above.
kind of like an au pair? I don't want anyone from this site near my kids, especially apple users
What he was talking about was a sort of farm like thing, where people hire you in, let you live at their house, you do work, and get paid some. But you wouldn't get paid that much because you are getting free food and board.
Lol seems like someone read up on indentured servants and thought maybe this will catch on again.

OP, if you want to travel, live with random people, have room and board provided, AND get paid for it... Join the Armed Services.
I have smart tools, most handy thing out of that is the compass basically.
So im asking, what are the best survival apps?
Im no conspiracy nut, but it doesn't take a genius to realize the earth is going through stuff it never has before.
Survival apps meaning:
Any guides (i already have the US army & Navy guides)
Any tools that utilizes the Epic's tech (i.e compass, solar wind activity)
If we do not already, someone needs to start coding some serious apps.
Also, if anyone knows of any good ad-hoc programs for when cell towers go down.
Having a nice shiny phone wont mean **** when the cell towers go down.
Take this seriously, please.
When the towers go down and all that madness starts happening, how do you plan on charging your shiny phone?
Edit: As snide a response as this is, I'm being serious. There's better ways to be prepared.
In all seriousness, anything a smartphone can do (assuming network infrastructure is kaput) is better done with a purpose built tool. If TSHTF, you really think a day or two of battery life is gonna cut it?
Better to get a standalone analog compass, a good set of maps, and a decent Yaesu HT ham radio. No reason to reinvent the wheel.
(Unless you want to play Angry Birds)

**** hits the fan, you have a phone for 2-3 MAX, what apps are you gonna have that will help you?
You think i assume our Epics are gonna be solar charged or something?
So again, 2-3 days max...what apps are going to be the most helpful?
EDIT: If you're going to state the obvious (phone dying) then dont bother posting, im fully aware of
that as its the big pink elephant in the room.

It's okay. I'm thank-worthy. As much as I love technology and the cool things it can do... I wouldn't really bother. You're a lot better off learning basic things like first aid and having the head knowledge than being reliant on anything. Also, it's awfully optimistic to hope for more than 24 hours max if you ask me.

Lol, you're an interesting fellow -- interesting is the nicest word I can think of at the moment.
I have everything else covered, dry meals, water filters, i have enough first aid kits to aid a village. I have much more aid that i wont list as it comes from ex-military friends, trust me when I say I have everything else covered.
So again, when TSHTF, what are the most useful apps?
I cant even believe im trying to explain to you the importance of having survival apps on your phone, feel like im taking crazy pills or something.
EDIT: and no, you are not thank worthy -- not even close. Please abandon the thread if you continue to think small small-mindedly, on the other hand
if you want to contribute, please do.
They have solar chargers for laptops which will hold over 10 full cellphone charges and require something like 10 hours of sunlight to get those 10 full charges. With them, you could charge your cell phone as fast as you could with a normal power adapter from the wall.
I think they also have $50 range solar chargers which would hold about 3-4 cell phone charges, and get your cell phone charged fully in 3-4 hours from sunlight or from the built-in battery.
I'll take a stab at a serious reply for ya...
Other than a compass, obviously... A GPS program with pre-downloaded maps might come in handy, something like Gaia GPS, perhaps, where you can get maps with hiking trails listed. I figure if something happens to take out the satellites, you probably wouldn't be around to worry about much else!

So, let me get this straight. You shoot people to get directions?
Gotta love 'em rednecks.
Thanks Nabbed & Dalmus, will definitely look into both of those.
As for the others, the ignorance is amazing.
Ill list some of my own if anyone didnt already know about them:
BrightestFlashlight
U.S. Army Survival Guide
U.S. Navy Seal Training Guide (which i downloaded & loaded onto my phone w/ a pdf reader)
Boskoi (utilizes google maps (albeit if its still up) to show you ALL edible sources around you, nuts, fruits, berries, even fungi.
ICE: In Case of Emergence (shows you First & Local responders (police stations, hospitals) and also gives you information on allergies, specific medical conditions,
how to treat someone who is unconscious, ect.
Also remember, if you have some steel wool & enough tinder you can start a fire with your own battery.
Small-minded thinking gets you nowhere, open-minded with a dash of doubt is most important.
Not just outright "Oh you think you're phone will save you?"

The right approach would be to think, wow we really do need some handy apps.
I'd code everything myself and not ask a single question but I obviously dont have that knowledge so instead I have to take a gamble, post on here -- & get nothing but ignorant responses.

I'm not sure how my post was ignorant at all, I was kind of thinking the same about this entire thread. This belongs somewhere, yes, but not here. At least take it over to the themes and apps section... And no I don't think we need apps of this kind. If I was worried about something happening, I'd get actual tools designed (and much better) to solve these problems than my cell phone.

It's called a map and compass for directions. Gun to hold onto my shiny cell phone that I will wear around my neck as a trophy because that's all it will be good for.
If your really looking for a serious note on this and I am still confused why you'd rely on a cell phone when things go down but I'd get all the guides, local maps, points in interest I.e. police stations, military bases, hospitals and load them into PDF files then save them on your phone so you can have all the info ready. No cell reception required.

You'd be much better served with a glock. If you want to shoot bandits in the case of a national emergency, a handgun trumps the rifle.
Also, you seem to be confused, friend. If you are going up against a totalitarian government, then a rifle is a good choice. A handgun is much better in the case of riots. Your confusion seems to stem from the misinterpretation of the Second Amendment. You see, you can fight against injustice with a rifle, but a handgun is much more useful in case of civil disobedience.
I have to repeat these obvious truths 3 times over because rednecks really don't think for themselves.

I'll make it even simpler, a pistol for CQB/CQD and a rifle for anything past that. Take your smugness somewhere else, it doesn't really add much here.

Yea but this guy, Kim Dotcom(lmao), is under critical fire my friend! I don't think he'll be out anytime soon...He's been charged with a felony once before, on which he banked $42 million, BUT under German law, it was swept under the rug. And my guess is that the US government will not be as forgiven for the current charges that have been brought up against him...two of them being RACKETEERING and MONEY LAUNDERING??? WTF...but not only that, Megaupload has had endorsements from high profile celeb's which will bring this case into the limelight, so pretty soon everyone is gonna be talking about it, at which point the government will definitely not want to loss this one...http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2012/01/19/feds-shut-down-file-sharing-website/

I'm still not so sure about that. A number of them were scared into dropping support once they realized that had no idea what was actually going on in the bill or on the internet for that matter. The public backlash was pretty tangible. If things get more serious protests would likely get more intense and the backlash would likely be epic.
Do I think that means that SOPA/PIPA have been defeated? Tough question. Chances are bills called "SOPA" and/or "PIPA" will likely never get passed...but I think it's not unlikely that they will be dismantled into pieces and stuffed into "feed the poor orphans" bills, "job creation" bills and "unemployment extension" bills....what kind of heartless prick would vote against unemployment benefit extension, jobs creation and feeding poor orphans?
...only honest politicians. Good luck finding one of those let alone enough to keep something named like that from passing.
Well, as you all know the government only works for the rich. So, when the rich think there precious profits might be damaged they will arrest you. That is exactly what happened with pirate bay. They forced a foreign government to arrest people who hadnt committed a crime in their own country.
For the record I use megaupload all the time to download roms. I think we all do. They are far from pirated so hopefully they will see the site has a great legitimate purpose.

Just wondering if any of you sprint workers here can tell me some things about the tech positin. What to expect and what is usually done there. I got an interview tomorrow with them for a tech position, so i just wanted to find out the benefits of working for sprint. Any help will be greatly appreciated . Thank you.
Benefits of working at Sprint? That would be amazing customers like us here on XDA, what more could you hope for? lol
Good luck on your interview.
First off, #1 benefit is a $0 phone plan.
As far as the position goes, having experience rooting, flashing and just general understanding of Android will be the biggest thing. Followed by customer service (you can't be one of those closet nerds who can't talk to people) and lastly, third main task is handling inventory.
Honesty, most of the job is hard resetting Android phones since no one takes the time to understand their own phone. Also, learning the basics of Blackberries will help you a lot if you have no understanding of them going into it.

So your going to work in a corporate store? or a 3rd party reatiler (often mistaken for retail stores), or deep in the bowls of sprint with fancy switches or tower sites?
Techie
I started as a tech in a preferred retailer, I am now the store manager. Some of the previous comments were on point, You will be dealing with mainly android phones, likely EVO 4G's. Knowing the in's and outs of an android device is the best route. Having a general understanding of Blackberries is helpful. The hardest devices are the iden/nextel devices. They are a pain in the ass to work on. Having solid customer service and the ability to understand and empathize with your customer is key. You will get alot of angry people who say something like, " I have been with sprint for so many years, and I have 4 lines and my bill is $200/month, give me what I want!" The inital response is to say, "You and 40 million others too" Point being is that you have to be thick skinned and not take it personal. The best advice I can give, is to BACK UP CONTACTS prior to doing any work on the phone. Android makes it easy, export them to the SD. Blackberry, run a backup on desktop manager, other devices, make a backup using the cellbrite. The goal of a repair center is to repair first, triage second, and exchange as a last resort. Learning how to actually open up a phone and replace parts and assess whats liquid damage and whats fixable just comes with experience and it isn't generally something you can learn about ahead of time. Please PM me is you have some specific quesitons, I've dealt with the good, the bad and the ugly in my location. It's a tough job, but can be really fun if your a geek. It's the ultimate geek job.
Best advice I can give is to learn how to not take crap from anyone. Customers will do anything and everything to get something for free. The customer is not always right.
Memorize anything you can about Sprint phones. Settings, hard reset buttons, tweaks, etc. The more you can do from memory without having to look it up, the better off you'll be.
Yes. And I cannot emphasize enough that you will be dealing with some of the angriest people you might ever encounter. Nothing equals the rage of some random corporate big head who might face a day without their mobile device. They are out for blood. No matter how courteous and understanding you could possibly be.
Make sure to have thick skin and learn the eccentricities of passive aggressive conversation.
Many inconsiderate, ignorant, and inept employees in your prospective position, have soured the public towards cellular employees.
A bad experience on the phone or at another location will mightily influence the attitudes of customers that you serve face to face. So you might spend 90% of your time fixing the wrongs of some idiot who doesn't care. (Usually from call centers, but other customer facing locations as well.)
It can be a very amazing position. Frequently gratifying by helping a less technically knowledgable person through the varying issues they encounter. But many bad apples are to be prepared for.

Your going to scare him off! Good techs are hard to come by. While the above is correct, you may get yelled at for something that happened at another sprint store, but because your shirt says Sprint, you are the person getting it. Don't take it personal and do the best you can to help them. While I've dealt with plenty of upset people, I've also dealt with tons of people have thrive on the knowledge that I have of the android operating system, and really enjoy learning about something new. Other customers just want to learn the basics and be on their way. Find out the customers needs and address those needs.
I had an interview for sprint customer service rep today actually. Would have gotten the job but I didn't like the schedule. they gave me 2pm to 3am. Reapplying in a few months Because the job pays very good money and seems fun IMO.

Thank you so much man I really appreciate that I'll definitely pm . Thank you all for replying so fast. I'm really excited about his job because I've been working on the customer service jobs all my life. Right now I'm working at a dealership so I know what to expect from a few customers. And as far as android system goes
I'm really comfortable with it. I know how to root and flash and the basics so thats covered for me. Ya'll should of seen the faces of some of the employees there when i pulled out my E4GT with the ics rom it was pricesless lol. Wow the benefits sound really freaking awesome!! I think is a retail store. And is a tech position like helping people out with their phone probs. The only thing worrying me is blackbarry since I heavent had any of those phones. Good thing there is always room for learning . Ones again thank you all
Nextel blackberries are the worst, but whoever trains you will teach what you need to know. You won't get thrown to wolves upon hiring. There are alot of training courses. You won't deal to much with root, only when you see a rooted phone that won't activate. Good Luck let us know how it goes.
tomaro is my final in training, or my initial 90 days. in fact, my manager made me a new name tag without the in training
whoever mentioned knowing the basics of blackberry has it right. i know EVERYTHING about android, and an sufficient amount about iOS, but let me tell you, my first 20 tickets were all blackberries with problems like JVM errors and no gps lock...those being so hard i mainly just exchanged -_- then again, even with the easiest question "how do i turn wifi on" threw me off. its like i didt even know blackberies exsisted before i was hired at sprint. lmfao but thankfully one of my coworkers is a major RIM guy so hes since taught me the ropes
one more thing on the blackberry front...is it just me or do they taking FOREVER to boot??? it gets akward after the first 5 minutes and im shouting from behind the glass....half way there, imma fix it, dont worry! lol
however. whoever said you wont get thrown to the wolves is trippin, yo. they stripped me naked, powdered me with sea salt and threw me into the fire. i dont ****in know how to change an evo speaker!
bETTER FIGURE IT OUT QUICK, WE TOLD HER YOUD bE DONE IN 15 MINUTES (youtube the rescue)
i have since learned the ropes and have really proven myself. my manager is hiring me on for 2$ more than i asked for, plus commission on the NASCcalander, and awesome benefits. ive drastically brought up our overall csats, and my personal csat and ready now is always at 100%. my first months AE budget was blown out of the water, but the past two months have been well below what they expected.
all in in all id say you need to know how to work blackberry desktop manager, the hard key reset for the entire line up, and youd better pick up a soldering gun 'cas those evo charging ports dont last a lick.

I wanna job at a sprint store
In all seriousness I really do
But I need a high school deploma or a GED
Man I still have to wait till June to graduate and I'm willing to bet I can troubleshoot phones better than most sprint employees that don't come here

Every EVO port I see is so totally ****ed theres no chance of saving it.
If the anchor legs break off you can forget about trying to fix it.
Im not sure why anyone thinks the Nextels are hard to fix? 90% or the time its swapping a front flip assembly or doing a master reset on the sim card.
Been a tech for 2 years now, its not a bad job like he said if you can spot the bull**** and keep the tough skin mentality...tons of people with the "Customer service said...." and then having to explain the TRUTH, get alot of the people who said they were told by CARE to bring their phone that fell into the toilet into me and I would replace it on the spot....not so much, call Asurrion....alot of that and replacing EVO speakers lol....its not bad at all....

Yea it's crazy how bad people destroy EVO charging ports. And screens. People with EVOs seem to take no care with their device.

I know someone at my work is picking up my phone when I am away and was wondering if there is an App that could record when my phone is being picked up. Hopefully it could even silently take a picture of the person doing it!
Ideally I would return to my work station and have the information I need.. I don't use a PC at my job so that is why I am looking for an App that can do this. Something like Cerberus without the theft aspect, lol.
I have searched and can't find anything... Please don't comment about screen locks and PIN Codes. I know about keeping people out. I want to see who/when people are trying to sneak in.
Thank you
I used Gotya facetrap,it has a option to take a picture whenever the screen turns on or whenever someone enter the wrong passcode or pattern

Thank you for your post. I just watched the video for this App and I am impressed. The App is VERY close to what I am looking for.
The thing I want (ideally) the App to do (besides what this one does) is have the ability to take a photo or video/time & date stamp an unauthorized user who is trying to access my phone without attempting to "unlock" it.
If my phone is locked they will most likely only try once, I am sure, and then stop their pattern of "sneaky behavior"..
I want to know who is trying access my phone whether it is locked or unlocked.

That app have a function which will take screen shot whenever they turn on the screen, they don't even have to attempt to enter your password/pattern for it to take a picture & you can have it email you a picture of the culprit with a time stamp/date of when the pic was taken,it even have the option to turn on a system tray notification on pull down bar which will also have time stamp.

That's what I was wondering.... Why not do like the rest of us and keep it secured on your person. I understand if you want on using this in the event your phone is lost/stolen. But you wanna know who picks it up... As in like a nosy girlfriend haha.... That's about the only thing I'd use this for

Yeah, he's just asking for it. It'll only be a matter of time before someone picks it up and instead of putting it back down puts it in their own pocket. I recommend you put it in your pocket! Happy New Years!
Rather than quote and reply to the non helpful comments I will put things into perspective for people. LOl.. I know you want to know.
I need to get evidence that a coworker (a bully to say the least) is entering my private work area, touching my personal property and trying to access my personal information, without my permission. If my phone is in my pocket I can't do that hence the need for an App like this.
[Btw. If you were a women and a coworker was going through your pocketbook while you were away from your cube would you just carry your pocketbook around the office with you all the time? Imagine all the women doing that and the atmosphere it would create.]
I like to solve problems not ignore or run from them. This coworker IS crossing the line.. My workplace is a mess because nobody will take any action against this coworker..
I am trying to solve a serious problem at my place of employment. The person I suspect/know who is doing this causes all kinds of other "nonsense" at work. They create a very negative working environment every single day. They have been there a long time and feel they can do whatever they want with impunity.
Everyone wants this person to stop their negative behavior but they don't know how to deal with it because the person has been there so long.. it's a small company. No Human resource Dept,ect.. People are "afraid" of this coworker. They don't want to get fired. Politics you know?
I hoping to catch them, confront them and put some fear in them so that they stop ALL their Nonsense.. I "will have the goods on them" and be empowered to make a change in their negative behavior. They cannot defend their "touching" of MY property.. I have already openly mentioned to people that I think someone is touching my stuff while I'm away from my desk. Did it stop? No. It started to happen even more, lol..
This "person" is so insidious if you bring your phone with you to the bathroom they complain to everyone that you are in the bathroom on your phone. Unbelievable I tell you!..
Someone has to stand up to this "person" and a picture is worth more than my word against theirs.. Like all Bully's this person is a coward and will be afraid when confronted with evidence of wrong doing..
The person is 54yrs old with no real marketable job skills. They lose their job and they are screwed. Hopefully they can change or be humbled by the realization that they CAN'T do what ever they want to people.
Happy New Year Everyone!
P.S.
Trust is the glue that binds all relationships. If I needed this app because I didn't trust my girlfriend I would get another girlfriend.

I have never heard of an app to do that. Ur better off getting a clock radio camera and record it. Or just confront the bully. It about the only way to resolve this issue
Sent from my SGH-T889
I completely understand your reasoning for needing this app but kind of like BACARDILIMON said, I'd go with a fiber optics type route. That way you can get a video of the perp coming into your workspace and get a little more proof of what they are doing other than the fact that you have a picture of their face on your phone. Plus, the cameras are a bit safer because if something of yours were to walk away, you would have prove as to who did it and exactly when.
Anyways, good luck with your CSI work
I second the covert camera idea. This is clearly the way to go. I wouldn't even hang it over the person's head. Just take it to the boss and discuss the hostile work environment the co-worker is creating for everybody.
Don't sit on it either. Evidence is best when fresh. Give it a couple weeks and it gets to be stale and brings up questions of your motives.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement

If you read the thread you would know that there is an App that DOES what I was hoping for in my OP. Lord_Kaizer gave us the name of that App (GotYa!) and a link to that App. GotYa! It works Great..
I actually have audio and video of this person harassing me/coworkers, sleeping on the job and other "nonsense".. However I started to think about the possible Legal Issues concerning the audio and video recording of someone without their knowledge. I'm not a Lawyer but I am sure it can't be Legal.
I don't want to get fired. This person has some power and latitude on the job. This is a serious matter that I'm about to "take on" for the benefit of me and my fellow coworkers. I HAVE to be Smart about this..
This App will provide me with picture after picture day after day of this "not nice" person attempting to access my personal property without my knowledge or permission.
A LINE HAS BEEN CROSSED. GotYa! LOL.. They can't weasel out of this one!
The pictures will have a time and date attached to them. The App will email the pictures to me in real time (time and date again) to ensure a "chain". The person can't say that I just took pictures of them and edited times and dates, bla bla bla.. you can't edit the times and dates on emails.
Anyways, you are right about the only way to resolve the issue is to confront the bully. My physical evidence WILL Negate any he said she said "Brush Off".. this is how the Owner has handled "matters" in the past. The Owner isn't stupid though and WILL call his lawyers for advise...
I have a Legitimate anti-theft app on my phone that enabled me to discover that a coworker is attempting to what? read, access/steal my personal information? I have a $700 Smart Phone. My whole life is in here.
Why are they regularly "going into" my Personal phone. I have a reasonable expectation that this behavior isn't happening to me on the job. Surely this behavior is against "The Rules".. I will show that this is a pattern of behavior and not some random event.
This is a very serious Matter. My job will be on the line when I expose this A....e

I let your first non-helpful post slide because I saw you have a 153 thanks and figured that you are a helpful and productive member of Our Community.
I used your second non-helpful post as a reason to enlighten Community Members as to why I need the GotYa! App and hopefully show how technology can be used to Empower people and not be victims..
Have you watched the Youtube video for this App?? The man in the video was robbed at an ATM, at gun point, and was able to get the criminal caught for the crime because he had this App installed..
Now that I have read your 3rd non-helpful post I see that you are just Trolling my Thread.
