I'm rooted, and working on it. So far, I am unable to remove the system app. I have been successful in changing its permissions, and renaming it. Now I just simply get "Application Not Installed", I no longer get the error that your screen shot shows. I am gonna try and use Android Commander to push the file, and see what that does, as it will allow the install of a system app. Gotta wait til next break tho. I'll keep you posted.

Solved. You need root. Grabbed an app from the playstore called mount /system. Open app, set system to rw on boot. Reboot. Install Google Now. Hope this helps, thank me if it does.

Well, you may be happy to know that I now have it working properly. I had to add a step tho. Titanium Backup. When I get home from work tonight, I'll post up screen shots and all that good stuff.
Summary of install:
Mount /system RW
Using Titanium Backup, uninstall Google Search
Install the two previously mentioned APK's
Enjoy!
Installing over top of what was already there was hit and miss if it would work or not. this method here, works perfectly, and is not glitchy at all. runs quite smooth now actually.

Did you do the flash method or download the APK?
For the apk method, just delete GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk from system/app and download Google Search from the market.

will probably save all my pics and what not.. and do a full wipe gain root and give this a go this weekend.. when i do i'll make a simplified tut explaining the process and mayb add a video of it working... *gonna be a busy weekend so might no see it till monday cheers

Sorry I'm late with these. But I used the apk method. Two apk files total.

has everything been working so far ?

I installed it the way tribal indicated and it seems to be working fine. Although, the back button doesn't exit Google Now. Pretty nifty. The notification for weather got a bit annoying since I already have the weather posted on my status bar via fancy widget, but the Google Now notification was easily removed. I'll keep you all updated with what I think of it.

Freezing the app won't work, unfortunately. Fort this, to remove the app, in Titanium Backup, just select it and uninstall it. You can always reinstall it later, it just won't be installed as a system app. It would be installed as a regular app.
Sidenote: There is another way of doing this. It's a bit more in depth, but gives you ALL of the Google Now perks. Including the new sexy voice. hahaha. If anyone wants those instructions, I'm willing to type up a guide for it.

Wish there was a way to install it without having to be rooting that I didn't have all the Gingerbread junk on my phone. I'm getting force closes. Or wish there was a way to just root ics.

Google Play Update 4.0.25 [4/9/2013]

Update 4/9/2013 : Check post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40116168
-------------------------------------
Old update: Just thought I would share this. A new update to google play will be pushed out soon looks like with new features. It will let us remove apps from "My Apps". Much needed feature. Grab the apk from android police
Qbking77's review and how to:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCWKTeFIjfg
Source:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/1...bility-to-remove-apps-from-the-all-apps-list/
What's New
The most notable and immediately apparent new feature is the long overdue ability to remove apps you've previously downloaded from the All Apps list. If you like to try a lot of apps, that list is likely very cluttered. With the new Google Play, you can trim it to your heart's content.
Update #1: You can multi-select by long-pressing any app in the list and then tapping more apps, then delete them all in one go (added 2 new screenshots demonstrating it).
Update #2: The new Play Store now keeps track of your location in lists, including My Apps and All Apps, so when you click into an app and back, it drops you into the same spot. I had variable luck with this, and it didn't seem to work in All Apps at first, but I just reproduced it on both the EVO LTE and the Nexus 7. Brilliant.
Update #3: The notification icon that shows up when you have app updates has changed, and notifications are now expandable. I've added more screenshots showing the differences.
Update #4: The notification icon after installing an app now shows the app icon instead of something generic.
The size of the Play Store APK actually went down, so Google must have trimmed some extra fat. We're still digging through everything - in the meantime, check out the screenshots and grab the new version from our mirrors.

way to trick apps to think the phone is a tablet?

it's there a way to trick apps to think this phone is a tablet?
like "log me in ignition" has a way better interface in tablets than on phones which would work on this phone well... I'm just wondering if there is a way to make the app think this is a tablet?

Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
you can change the build.prop lines that say ro.sf.lcd_density to whatever you you want. 160 is wayyy too small and the status bar will FC on you. I'm trying 240 right now. Everything seems good so far, but this may cause issues with apps or the Play Store down the road.
You must be rooted to change these values. Also, there are 2 places that you have to change this value. Why? No idea. There shouldn't need to be more than 1 entry for LCD density in the build.prop. so change both, save, and reboot.

Yes, that's part of it. Apps read off that, Play Store uses the "fingerprint" in build.prop as well
I'd like to revisit this question. I used Titanium Backup to get a copy of the apk from my tablet. Any suggestions on how to get the Note II to take the apk? Is there a setting on the phone that I can change or do I need to modify the apk?
Thanks
Viper,
I've been attempting to do the 240dpi mod and never really succeeded. If you'd be kind enough to sort of write a step-by-step instruction you'd definitely help a brotha out!

The DPI change really turns this phone from great to amazing.
Here is a walkthrough on how to change the dpi: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1993530
Keep in mind that it will mess some of your stock apps up since they aren't made for the resolution. You can either install other programs to use in place of the stock ones or you can flash these resized stock ones: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2001143
Good luck on it and be sure to nandroid backup before you do anything. Also be sure to hit the "thanks" button to the OP's on those links. Without them, our phones wouldn't nearly look as good =)

Is there a way to do this without root because uh, I don't want to sound like a noob but I have a zoppo zp998 and its a Chinese phone, and other is no help out there to root it because not many people know what they are. I can't work out how to do it myself because in recovery mode everything is written in Chinese. The screen is 5.5" and I think this tricking it into thinking it's a tablet would be a great way to get full use out of the screen, problem it is I also can't flash a ROM or boot a tablet kernel because of the whole Chinese thing..

Did the modified Google Wallet APK stop working for anyone else?

Long story short, I've been running the latest version of Mack's ROM, which is awesome, along with the modified APK of Google Wallet that we all know still isn't officially supported. With that said, this Apk has been running for me without a hitch. I even used it yesterday. As of right now, out of the blue, it's giving me the dreaded "your device is not supported at this time" message. As far as I know, I didn't change the ROM or anything else other wiping the Dalvik cache\ cache, and installing a new battery. Anybody else having an issue?
Mine also stopped working...

So apparently it's not just me. I've always used the aforementioned apk, and after a reboot it suddenly stopped working. I'm thinking maybe Google patched the workaround. Either way, I hope there's another way or our Note 2 becomes officially supported.
Fr what it's worth, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times. Nothing has worked.

By the way, as I've stated before, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the APK. This means it hasn't reinitialized, meaning it probably won't work for me again. Correct?
This is my current screen, which most likely is identical to everyone else's.
Just flashed the newest version of Macks All Star and re-setup google wallet. Setup for wallet went as normal when changing ROM's no issues or hiccups. Going out later and will see if it works, give you an update when I return.

You don't think this is the same as being permanently blocked, right? I say this only because I didn't wipe the wallet. I felt that there was no need to because I didn't switch ROMs.
It works just fine for me on my note 2 running Macks All Star 3.3, used it at Jersey Mike's Subs and Starbucks. As others have said always reset google wallet when ever making changes to your phone and I always revert back to original android ID thru titanium backup.

Google has began the rollout of the new Play Store version 4.0.25. However, it's only available for 4.2 devices, so we will not get it automatically, but it is available for download via the link attached. I was able to install and run just fine on my LGOG 4.1 device, so we should be good for this.
Great design, loving it so far
good looks man, im diggin the new design.
Reminds me of the android marketplace.
That was a fresh change. But, I don't like it.
1. Not as much content.
2. Not so smooth on the scrolling.
3. Will they ever bring back the option to see your purchased apps.
It seems like they made it more plain. Thanks for the apk though. It works perfect and was way easy to install.
Edit: spelling

The smoothness seems about the same to me, but I can see why you would say its not as smooth, there are times where it tends to lag a bit.
I do like the simplicity of it now, but I don't really see any new features, just refreshed design is about it. I like it though, simple and clean.

Not quite following you here. Do you mean only the apps that you had to pay money for?

Yeah, it literally just updated 1 minute before I posted. But what's funny, it hasn't updated on my GNex10 yet. But that maybe because I use AOKP and not stock on my tablet.

I'm using a blacked out version of 4.0.25. Picked it up here:

Also, this thread has tons of various themed gapps.

The icons seem bigger and crisper in this version, this is just a subjective opinion but I think that this version looks more sleek and has a 'newer' feel than the old app store. I haven't experienced any noticeable increase in lag either, or if there is it's not by a fantastic margin. Installed flawlessly on Lifeless14.
i didnt like it because of the bland look but after installing the black version with purple text its awesome

WARNING
This will clear your messages.
Back them up before flashing.
Flash this at your own risk - it is working on my phone, but that doesn't mean it is guaranteed to work on yours.
I am not responsible if your phone explodes, implodes, melts, bricks or anything else.
This mod is for deodexed TouchWiz 4.1.2 ROMs built from T-Mobile UVDMD5 firmware.
I don't recommend flashing it on anything else.

What is this mod?
This mod replaces the stock TouchWiz messaging app with the CM10.1 (AOSP) messaging app.
Why would I want that?
Maybe you want Group Messaging, Emoji, Quick Reply or just a cleaner (in my opinion) messaging app.
Ok, sounds good. How do I install it?
Download the attached zip file and flash it in TWRP or CWM, then reboot. It's that easy.
Can I use a different Mms.apk? I want it inverted!
You sure can! I'm currently using a nice inverted on I found on RootzWiki, but any 4.2.2 Mms.apk should work. Just rename it to SecMms.apk and put it in the /system/app folder.
It deleted my messages! Why?!?!
That's why I told you to back them up earlier. You did read that, right?
I don't like it.
Flash the attached uninstaller. Not everyone likes the same things, it's OK.
How can I make this mod myself?
Loserskater over on the AT&T forums made a nice guide on how to do this, you can find it here, and maybe give him a thanks while you're over there :good:
Thanks to loserskater for coming up with the method that made this possible!
Awesome man you guys are so quick with the mods we have the best community! Aosp mms is the only way to go, giving it a go now.
Edit :works perfect

Nope, just flash and go. You will lose previous texts though. Back them up with your choice of app.

MMS caused a crash of the phone as well, needed a hardboot (long press power button). If needed i can pull crash log for you, if its in there, since it just hangs and does nothing for a minute. Going to pull the apk and install it old school way to test.

thanks so much for this.
is there any way you can release the aosp mms program that have "custom theme options" where you can change the backround color etc?? and will work with this rom??
thanks!
I apologize for the poor quality control, I got carried away with the new features and apparently forgot to check MMS
OP updated with an uninstaller, and I am working now to find a solution for the FCs.
