Battery life 1st impressions - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Does it take awhile for this battery to settle in? It's just been 2.5 hours since my first charge and I'm already down to 90%. All I did was send a few texts and receive a couple of short calls. Can't remember if I experienced this on other phones but after hearing about how great the S3's battery life is, I'm a little disappointed.

I think it's great. It's a lot better than my Epic 4g Touch, that's for sure.
And 10% per 2.5 hours is pretty good IMO.. That's 2.5 * 10 = 25 hours of battery. That's pretty sick lol.
Just remember to turn off wifi/bluetooth when not in use, and turn off LTE if it's not active in your area (so the phone doesn't keep searching for the 4G signal).

Yeah, wait for it to settle. This phone definitely has the best battery out of everything I've owned...and I've had a few phones, believe me lol

How is your signal? Have you been in an area with wifi? Radio signal has been the biggest issue for me...

I've been on wifi the whole time.

I sometimes get more than 2 days on a charge. I try not to use phone while charging, causes inefficient charging(supposedly).
this message brought to you by my GalaxyS3 running Phantom's Blazer v1.6

I must be doing something very wrong. I really got horrible battery life in my phone and I only got 4 apps installed: xda, rage of bahamut, Facebook, and power amp. The ones that can be on sync I turn it off. I'm currently running on CM10 but was on stock for about 3 weeks and blazer for about 2 weeks. All with similar battery life. 2 hrs of screen on time with 13 hrs on battery. On my epic touch I could do 5 hrs of screen on with 24hr battery and evo lte 7 hrs of screen on and 18+ on battery. I've already switched batteries so I know its not a defective one. I got no email syncing and brightness is always set on lowest unless I'm outside its at 50%. I will try to post a picture of better battery stats, CPU spy, and see if anyone can help me figure out what I can do to improve it. Really disliking battery life right now and hope it will get better

I personally just went 26 hours with 3 hours screen on time in CM10. That's way better than my Evo 4G could do, so I'm extremely happy with my battery life by comparison. This phone has been awesome for me.
Edit: That time includes leaving Wifi and mobile data enabled at all times, with data mode set to CDMA/LTE. I also left everything syncing like normal.

Coming from a EVO LTE so far my battery life been unimpressive. Loving the phone, but not digging the battery.

Not bad for me. Moderate to heavy usage.
Sent from Pluto.

seems much better than my og evo running anthrax

This phone is right on par with my iPhone 4's battery (which is a beast). If you think this battery is underwhelming, you obviously haven't had the original Evo 4G lol

[Q] bad battery??

I have been using the lte g.nexus for about two weeks now and i cannot stand the battery life let me explain
Im on screen timeout 15 sec auto brightness.
Operating on 3g mode only and my average batt time is abouy 4 hours of moderate to heavy use(no bluetooth r gps included) ive heard stories of batt conditioning when i got my g.nexus i charged it to green and immediately begin using it. I even let it drain to zero the first two charge cycles. I dont have any syncing apps doing auto sync except my google account and no one app seems to be sucking juice the screen is always using between 40%-60% in the usage stats is this normal i.never had this problem with my bionic.
that F'ing ridiculous that you are only getting a few hours on your g-nex especially since you have turned a lot of things off or to a minimum. i would either go to a verizon store to try to get a replacement or purchase an extended battery.

Not trying to hijack this thread but I'm starting to think my battery is bad too. I've been giving it time because this is only my 4th day with it, but its just atrocious.
Yesterday: charged to 100% and took off charger immediately around 4 pm. After a moderate amount of texting, 10 minute phone call, and my 4 Gmail accounts syncing in the background on 3g the whole time, the battery died around 11pm. The screen on time was maybe 1.5 hours.
I'm running Android Revolution rom with the included stock kernel. Everyone reports about how awesome the battery life is with that rom, but if 7 hours is good battery life then I don't know what to expect.

Im starting to wonder if the phone or either the battery is at fault because i see a lot of usera spread out across the net complaining of similar problems. Is there is a certain way to traim the batteru the first day or so because i love this phone but i refuse to buy an ext. Batt jus to make it thru a work shift.only on 3g ..anyone else having this problem or know of a fix?
I've heard some glitch about the camera sensor staying on in the background in a different thread. Search for it in xda

My battery was only worknig for a few hours with the extended battery when i looked at the battery usage it said 70% mediaserver. looked up online and it said if you have a picture or vid that is corrupted it can cause mediaserver to keep trying which i had a photo gallery widget on home screen. when i deleted img and deleted widget im now getting like 10x more battery life.
I am getting good battery life.
During my sleep or when my phone is idle or when I know I am not using it for a long period of time, I switch my phone to 2G.
Below is a screenshot of my battery usage during a long period of idle (overnight when I am sleeping)

I only switch it to 3G when I am actively using the Internet for surfing websites, Facebooking, Youtube, uploading photos or video.
Below is a screenshot of my usage from light to moderate to heavy.
I went into the bathroom with full charge and after I did my daily deed(s) I went down to 43% with brightness turned all the way down and only running xda app. wtf gives?

cell standby a hardware issue???

long time android user, and my GF just upgraded to her first smartphone to the galaxy nexus, same phone i have. and the battery sucked, she had 50% left and went to work and within 2 hours it was dead, so i unlocked/rooted. and installed aokp 3 milestone along with franco krenel to the latest milestone. same rom and kernel i have, and i get atleast 14+ hours on regular use nothing turned off.
her battery status looks like it usally the cell standby to blame, could this be a hardware issue? i completly wiped data/dalvik/battery and did new install, going to try again flashing back to complete stock. but could this be a hardware issue?

Turn off 4g.
have you checked if you both have the same radio? you can try that
also maybe check hows reception on her workplace
So... she had bad signal. Phone sat there trying to get 4G / hang on to a bad signal. Will drain the battery 100% to 0% in a few hours if you let it do that.
no i haven't tried turning 4g off yet, shouldn't have to i wouldn't think. she lives in seattle and i live 30miles further north of from her, and i don't have a problem with 4g conection. but i'll try that just to see if it gives a different result.
Well I can tell you right now, AOKP gets absolutely HORRID battery life. Try BAMF.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
Download juice defender and set it to balanced. You will see a HUGE difference with standby drain.
If you have a third of the time without signal, I would expect energy to drain a lot, as the radio will keep trying to find a signal and consume way more energy than if it is connected and in stand by.

Nothing wrong with AOKP battery
yea im useing AOKP and get great battery on my phone, but not hers, thats why i was wondering if it COULD be a hardware issue, or if this is always a software issue.

Ditto that. It's easy to blame a particular ROM for one's battery woes, but the truth of the matter is it's invariably something else causing the drain.

I believe there is/was a setting to turn off mobile data when screen is off

Constantly turning on/off mobile data when the screen is off will more than likely drain the battery more than leaving it on. Not to mention that you'll get no background sync or notifications.

No I think you have to turn it off if its right on that fringe area. Plus lte networks and radios are very immature ans have a lot of years to get fully optimized and tweaked to match current cell coverage performance. You're using a brand new network technology that has a long way to go. Beta testing.

Did I get a defective battery?

Just got my s3 like a week or so. I made a mistake and not charge it initially (thought it was a myth). I used my battery all the way to 17%. Now my battery only average up to 2 hours screen on. My sister who also got the phone as the same time has about right hour screen on time. Did I screw up or it's just my battery being defective
EDIT: attached is the battery stats

Well, when I'm in door, I use low brightness most of the time. Only when I'm outside I would use auto brightness. Since I'm in wifi zone most of the time, yes I do have wifi on. I mostly use my phone for twitter, web browsing, and youtube, nothing heavy like gaming or benchmark.
Hard to say if its defective but I've definitely seen a lot better battery. It might not hurt to try and get a new one.

you should calibrate your battery a couple times once you get the phone. do it a couple times and it will fix itself. also check all your syncing settings. this phone will deplete a battery in 5-6 hours if fully charged and phone brightness is up all the way while watching videos.
Calibrating batteries is a myth from the days of older battery technology. Draining your battery to 0 on purpose is actually killing your battery faster because you just used up one cycle.

There's a bug on stock that makes cell standby much higher than it really is. So I wouldn't worry too much about that.
Also, Google Chrome is a huge battery killer for some reason. Consider switching to a different browser?
Still having the original battery in my vibrant and getting 8-9 hour charges while killing the battery 100% and charging it up once a week does nothing? Same thing for my g2x. I get about 10-11 hours on the thing daily original battery as well. If anything and you're not rooted to delete battery stats, its a good thing to do a couple times. I don't think I have hurt the battery at all, and if anything they still last very long...

GSM vs CDMA - HUGE difference in battery life?

I recently switched from AT&T to Sprint and have the Galaxy Nexus on both services.
My signal for Sprint is better than AT&T at my house and I just ran my first battery test to find that with 2 hours of screen time I got roughly 4 hours of battery life on the Sprint phone verses the AT&T phone which I could easily get at least a day out of it...
Is there really that huge of a difference between the AT&T version versus the Sprint version in regards to battery life?
If this is the case, and the battery life on the Sprint version is this bad, I don't know what to do because there's no way I can only go 4 hours without having to plug it in.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Yep pretty big difference.
LTE on the GN is a separate radio, so you have two radios running at once. Battery killer bigtime.

True but you can disable the LTE radio in advances network settings. That being said, there's still a huge difference. I can only get 3 hours screen on and thats only if I unplug at 100% and use my phone nonstop til it dies. Realistically I get 2 hours screen on a day.
I have the Verizon gnex and I get about 1.25 hours of screen time and at least 10-13 hours of life. Of course I can't live without having certain accounts syncing so I just had to suck it up and live with it. I tried many roms and different methods of trying to get more screen time and lasting the whole day... just not going to happen. Seeing that sprint is also CDMA, the likelihood of getting a impressive battery life is slim.
If you haven't yet, try rooting and putting a custom ROM. I'm running cm10 and I really like it.

Ya just call their customer service. Theres a thread over at the accessories forum about it.
And if you turn off 4g while using at least half the battery on wifi, you might get 2 hr screen time. Thats my experience on big red

Hell, I'm lucky to get 2 hours in a charge
Yeah, the battery life for our phones is not the greatest, I've found a spare battery to be a must for longer days. I do get better battery life than what you're seeing though, an average of about 4 hours screen on per charge, with about 15-17 hours of standby using the standard 1750 mAh battery.

Yeah... it's crazy. It's the one hindrance of smartphones... 4G + 4hour + display time would be ideal. FCC should make a mandate about battery life... "Must exceed 5 hours with the display on full brightness with a low signal 4G"

I'm not sure you understand what the FCC does... Vote with your wallet if you want a change, go buy a phone like the RAZR Maxx with a huge battery, complaining here won't do anything.

Yup, the GSM guys get much better battery life.
My VZN Gnex has less than 2 hours screen time with mixed LTE and wifi on a good signal. That said, I'm still going to complain no matter how many people say to switch to 3G. I believe consumers buy products because they should be good, not so they can make sacrifices after purchasing a product. As of yet, the VZN crowd doesn't have much of a choice for Nexus devices, so Gnex it is.
Make do with what ya got and don't let some battery life stop you from enjoying your phone. Just charge your phone if you get the opportunity and don't let it bother you.
Other phones are worse, some r better. No one says u can switch to a phone with better stats. I'm not complaining cuz I come from a droid charge where ubhad to tweak the crap out of it to get 2hrs of screen on time.
