ICS Camera Apps for Epic 4G? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all - if you're on ICS (I'm using CyanogenMod 9 RC1), you may have noticed that the Camera app doesn't work very well. I've installed the Camera17 app which appears better, but I still need to do some testing.
Low-light situations are key
Flash and autofocus
Video Recording
Front-facing camera (not sure how to enable appropriately in Camera17 from AOKP (I think).
Any others that you are using? Are they good for the above, and posting to Facebook/Dropbox, etc. ?

What's with all the noob questions in General lately?

I think Sprint might of made the Epic a freebie judging by all the noob's if that is the case it is going to worst. (this is a joke not sure if sprint did that or not)
To the OP try CM9 RC2

Try out Camera ICS..
I've abandoned the stock ICS camera app for this and am much happier with that one.

I think that due to the Epic's prince falling to around $100 (off contract), you can now get Sprint's best slider with ICS/JB, so a bunch or new people are jumping on the device

Yeah and with Sprint and Best Buy offering $60 or less, more are being sold on ebay and Craigslist for under $100. Looks like a new wave of users will be rolling in.

Busted camera is a hallmark of anything CM on the Epic, its how you know you've got the best stuff . I expect mine to work properly about 50% of the time. Running AOKP.
Trollalalala.
And thanks for the Camera ICS tip above, I'll check that out.

Not a n00b, just f'd up. Had the epic for almost two years now.
As to rc2, I'm leery of the issues from the release and don't have the leisure to reflash and fix them currently, but I'm going on a vacation and want the camera functioning .

You could always flash a TW ROM...maybe a real People's kind of ROM
Otherwise maybe try hdr camera app.

Funny thing is that after I cracked my first epic, I got a refurb which started having some issues on clean GB. Odd issues like the home soft key not working, and then Bluetooth not working.
I flashed tpr and was still having radio issues, so I did the full reset with rc1, and it's been mostly solid.
I'll prolly give tpr another shot one of these days, but I got a little shy of some of the extra flashing for bits of troubleshooting I was reading in the thread. Thanks for stepping into the dev realm tho, I love setting where the ROM is going....

ics camera vs gb camera

Hey guys I dont know if its just me or if anyone else might feel the same . Anyways does else feel that our phones take better picks while running gb roms or is it just me. I feel like my pics aren't as crisp on ics roms just curious any feed back would be appreciated.

I'm in no way a photographer or anything like that. But I definitely have to agree with you on this. I'm on CM9 and the pics doesn't seem to be as crisp as the pics on the GB roms.
You are correct, though there is someone out there bound to argue the oppisite. I myself have been through many differnt ICS (of all builds) and GB ROMs...
and can attest that this is the very reason that I am currently back on GB, running flawlessly, the incompatable apps, the camera not functioning as crisp, and notifications bugs finally did me in. My battery life is so much better with [EL29 base] anyways.
thanks guys i though maybe i was trippin lol...would be nice tk see a camera mod...hint hint any devs

Are you guys talking about AOSP ICS? Never ran ICS on this phone yet but I noticed it with the galaxy s. I was never thought much of it because I saw it as a port from the nexus side. So software is not optimized for the hardware. Plus our ICS AOSP ports came from a galaxy nexus that has only 5 megapixel. Correct me if I'm wrong. It's just how I saw it.

no you can only compare TW GB to TW ICS. not AOSP. ofc its gonna look different, Samsung tweaks their software for their hardware specifically

Both gb and ics cameras were about the same. But with ASOP or AKOP(or whatever the other one is lol) there is a very noticeable difference in picture quality. Focusing also seems to be different

LOL...yeah well it was our (girlfriend and I)'s anniversary, was our first date all over again.
I thought way back when I first got my phone there was a 12mp option and now all I see is up to 8mp. I will have to check my save pictures on my hard drive. The pics are definitely not as good as with GB in my opinion.

Please explain to me how you expect 8MP camera to take 12MP pictures... The hardware simply is not there. And as far as this thread goes saying that there is a difference between GB/ICS/JB picture quality, it has always been the same.

Anyone having AOKP camera issues?

I'm experiencing an issue with all recent versions (34 on) where stock camera doesn't work. All I get is a gray screen. I've tried clearing data to no avail. I've also installed camera fx which gets the camera working, but the orientation is broken. Don't understand this bug, but it has transcended 2 different Epic's.

I had that problem. You need to use a new kernel. There is a shadow kernel or samurai available that will fix it.
It's been my experience that the camera generally doesn't work on CM or CM based roms. It escapes me why the kernel developers manage to get the camera working but the cm team doesn't.

I ended up flashing a nandroid of previous working version then flashed milestone 5.2 and the new gapps and the camera works! I didn't clear anything just flashed right over it. I've noticed the camera has been flakey on the CM9 builds, like the flash and focus which are know bugs. I haven't read anyone with this issues I was experiencing. I've been lurking these forums since November of 2010 when I got my Epic, and have been really successful rooting and roming because of it. However I just started to post in the forums so I apologize for posting here. Thanks for all the help.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
Flaky is right. Even when the camera "works" on CM9 builds it doesn't work properly. Saying it is sluggish is too kind. Focus is a problem. And try using the camera after taking a video- (hint, it hardly works at all.)
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Honestly the camera is the only issue the keeps the CM9 builds from being daily drivers. Otherwise I love the them. A lot of people complain about battery life, but honestly I think having the roms running them is worth it. I even bought a 3500mA battery off amazon for 8 bucks to circumvent the extra battery drain, which also happens to be the best 8 bucks I've spent in a long time. Once the Devs get the camera bugs ironed out I won't see a need to go back to the gingerbread builds.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
Broken camera is a Hallmark of CM.
I really loved ICS otherwise, and managed to overlooked the ridiculous battery drain, which I believe has a little to do with shotty sprint service over the past two weeks. Constant loss of signal.
A 3500mah, really? I should have done some better research. I just bought a pair of 1800's off eBay for $10. Kinda disappointed to hear that there is a 3500 that works. And for $8.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Yup 8 bucks shipped with Prime membership! Sprint has been upgrading the towers in my area for 8 weeks now and from what I've been told that won't be done until the end of June. The service is so bad now that it's unbearable. Dropped calls, crippling data speeds, sms not going out and or being received. I've complained to Sprint and have been told that the my account will receive a credit once the LTE rollout is complete. I'm not going to hold my breath, but if they don't I might start shopping around for a new carrier as my contract will be up.

[Bounty] TouchWiz camera apk on CM10/AOSP/AOKP

I've seen posts like this for various projects of other devices so I figured I would give it a shot here.
If someone can get the Touchwiz camera apk (with the necessary touchwiz framework files) working on CM10 or AOSP, I will give them $20. The camera apk is literally the one thing preventing me from switching to CM10 or other AOSP/AOKP roms.
Everyone else is free to pitch in as well. Together, perhaps we can raise a worthwile & tempting bounty to encourage a skilled developer to get this working. If no one can do it, then we're not losing any money. If someone can pull it off, then it will be worth every penny. The Galaxy S II camera was ported to AOSP on the Fascinate so I believe this could be possible with the GS3.
Current bounty: $20.00
How about multi-view on CM 10/AOKP?

Put me down for another 20 US dollars, the stock Samsung camera is why I always go back to a TW ROM, but I would love to use AOKP.
Its probably possible to do but very very difficult as it needs tw framework. As anything is possible on android put me down for $20 as well. Stock cm/aokp camera is good and could never steer me away from cm/aokp roms but sammy cam would be an awesome addition!

You will NOT believe this, but for months now I have been wanting to write a similar post like you did.
If not for the Touchwiz Camera and Gallery I would have switched to AOSP/AOPK/CM10 a long time ago too
The Touchwiz camera and Gallery are so much nicer, and have a lot more features and options and look
so much more professional the differences are like day and night!
One of the main selling points of our S3 phone is the excellent camera and gallery app!!!
Everytime I try AOSP/AOKP/CM10 the camera and gallery looks as if they are a home made BETA or a downgrade!!!
Good luck in your endeavor!!!
(I have been told it cannot be done but I don't believe it. )

there is a video from a past android bbq where steve kondik (cyanogen) makes a presentation about cyanogenmod. You can find it somewhere on the internet. I advise you watch that to learn why the TW camera isn't functional with aosp.
If you want to learn to code, then you can check out the project called cornerstone, which is an open source multiview that was created for ics

[Q] Yet another what's the best rom thread: ICS and stable?

Greetings everyone,
I would like to start off by apologizing for bothering you folks with yet another "what's the best ROM for having X and doing Y" thread, although I felt that after searching I had a rather specific criteria, which I'm hoping someone may be able to address.
I have been using Virtuous Affinity for awhile now, and frankly I'm starting to feel old It seems like ICS has been out forever while I'm still on gingerbread. I am a little unclear on what the official status is of ICS support though; I thought I remembered hearing some talk about HTC potentially having an ICS based update in the works, although past that I know nothing. Browsing around, I'm a little discouraged by some of the known issues ICS roms may have; no camera support, broken audio/bluetooth, things like that.
What I would optimally like to have is a fully functioning ICS ROM. Stable, good performance, nice on the battery, etc. etc. UI wise, I have become accustomed to HTC's Sense UI, but even then I'm very foggy on what the differences are between their major versions (I've been hearing of 2.0 and 3.0). To be honest though, I wouldn't mind trying a new UI. I've liked the one Samsung puts on their Galaxy SIII.
Above all, stability is my goal. I'm not too comfortable with the trailblazing "nightly" builds and testing ROMs; having a working phone is pretty important to me. Now you might say, "Well, why even root to begin with?" Okay, I like to experiment a little bit
But I digress. What is there in the wonderful and magical world of ROMs?
P.S. I think it would be really useful if there was a sticky going something like "State of the ROM", which pulls together a list of ROMs and highlights their features and issues in an easy to compare manner (so a step up from the currently stickied ROM compilation thread)

Thanks for the suggestions, guys! I suppose I might want to give Evervolv a shot (Wifi is fixed I hope?) although I'm a little unclear about installing it. Most OPs post a tutorial for flashing ROMs, and while I would feel a little more comfortable flashing Evervolv on my own, it seems like there a new hoops you have to jump through for flashing ICS/JB roms. Could anyone guide me through the steps?
If you are rooted and have installed a custom recovery, go ahead and download the ROM of your choice, then install it from the recovery using install zip from SD card, then install the correct Google apps whether 4.2 gapps or 4.1 gapps
After that you restart and wait for the room to boot.
I highly recommend installing crossbreeder after the first boot, and then you are done!!!

Why would you start by apologizing. You are acknowledging that this is redundant. Read the threads that are already there. You aren't asking anything new. And even if you were, you could ask in an existing thread. And if the rom doesn't give specific instructions it means you flash it the same way as any other. Read the op in the thread for each rom and try usually state what works and doesn't.

Yes, I am aware that the general form of the question has been asked, although I wanted to see how the community felt about the priorities I put forth in looking for a ROM (hence why I later suggested that a sticky stacking the ROMs against each other with their features and flops would be useful). I realize now that a lot of the ICS roms don't exactly meet what I was looking for anyways, and that I would have to take some relatively larger risks. Alas, I am going forth with trying one of the suggested ones.
And I believe asking in another thread would be considered hijacking by most forums? I see it's not explicitly mentioned in the rules, although I would expect people to keep questions to their own threads as a matter of courtesy.
I sometimes forget people can't hear the tone my tone of voice when I type. I meant laying down the law in a good way.
To the OP. Perhaps you would like to work on your suggested project of comparing the roms and once then we can all add our input to your list?

I didn't take it negatively. And your suggestion is spot on with what I was about to reply. Something my pastor says when people come to him with new ministry ideas, "that sounds great, I'm putting you in charge of that committee." Usually people want stuff done but want someone else to do it.
People don't generally make those threads because like this one they get redundant. The features are listed in the rom thread. Questions pertaining to the rom are asked in that thread. If someone wants to make a thread like you suggest that's fine, but what happens is someone comes in and instead of reading the rom thread they start asking questions in the new thread that have been answered already and the op constantly has to refer people to go read that thread.

evervolv
The latest evervolv jellybean build has been working great for me. Wifi sometimes doesn't seem to toggle on and off as well as it should, but it works well enough.
Solution has been found for best ROM...its called TRIAL AND ERROR

The camera on aosp isn't as good as sense in my opinion anyway. I just never find myself using the sense launcher and therefore the sense widgets anyway, so I generally stick to aosp.

What about speed? I love JB and ICS, but can't deal with lag, need working Wifi and Tethering, and no longer have tons of time to flash over and over. Got a newborn, in school full time and still working full time. :silly:

Haha, I guess my brain hit critical mass with all that's going on, and I had to get back to my roots been running cm7/miui gingerbread nand backups for reliability with the new baby, but I'm an addict and need to run something new, and I can't afford a new device

Chilly's PAC build has been running great and fast. I installed crossbreeder and it got even better. The dev is also did a file swap on his phone.
sent from my incredibly paranoid inc2

Just bought this phone, used, off of Ebay. Few questions.

So, I decided to buy this phone to replace my crappy Motorola Xprt. Mainly because my xprt literally has 0 dev support, and is too small for my hands. Didn't need anything too fancy, so I bought the EVO 4G for 49 bucks.
Few questions I have though:
1. What is the best (iyo) ICS/JB rom for this device?
2. Is there paranoid android for this device? And if so, is it stable?
3. (Weird and oddly specific question) I had an unstable version of cm9 on my xprt, but I had a problem with viewing videos on instagram and vine.. actually they wouldn't play at all. Can anyone on a jb/ics rom confirm if they're able to video videos on one of those apps?
4. Videos in general, do they work alright?
Thanks!

Unfortunately, outside of Evervolv's 4.2.2 & 4.3 ROMs, Jellybean development on XDA for our phones has hit a lull. However, there are still a few newer (and very good) ROMs on the website below. As regards Paranoid Android, we don't have a pure, current version. The site below does have PacMan, Illusion and other variants that incorporate most, if not all of PA's features... Including Halo.

I purchased my evo off eBay in June and the mini USB broke last week and phone didn't charge so took it to sprint and they gave me a whole new phone. Just saying so if you have the dreaded USB issue know you'll get a refurbished preowned phone in mint condition

For the most part, any of Wambo's JB ROMs for the EVO will run incredibly well. In my opinion, after flashing all of them I would recommend CM10.1 as being the most smooth and stable.

I'm an absolute scrub when it comes to Android discussions (I only just rooted my phone last night ), but out of the few ROMs I've tried, I think Kendall's JellyBread is the best. It's very sleek, very clean and runs amazingly well. You can check out her thread here if you're interested:

Good luck in your endeavors. For $47 you have an excellent phone on your hands.
What about Reloaded .500? I have been on that for awhile...I might change but then it seems like every ROM has something that doesnt work be it FFC, video, 4g etc...If you read closely PACman rom has no working USB Tether/Camcorder/FFC/4G
Eh the things that don't work don't really bother me. I don't have 4g on the phone I have now, nor do I plan to pay for it. Don't have a ffc either and it really isn't important. I can use videocam illusion for recording video and usb tether is useless to me anyway.
