[Q] Rooting slowing phone down - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I need some help,
I have been using CleanGB v1.1.2 for a long time. Recently, I've been having a huge problem. Whenever I use ANY ROM, after about ten to twenty minutes, my phone just becomes *slow* as molasses. It's unnerving. It could be at the bootloader screen... it could be in the ROM itself... but if I'm using ANYthing but the stock ROM with everything unrooted, the phone just goes slow-as-*&#^-as-*&&& and I have to pull the battery out after ten to twenty minutes.
Any ideas?
My ROMs aren't corrupted. I've tested them all and I've tried installing and rooting from different computers with the same problem. I have tried CleanGB v.1.1.2 and People's 2.2.1 and Thunderhawk 5.1. All have the same problem after ten to twenty minutes.
EDIT - I should add that I have rooted (even as of today) other people's Epic 4Gs and none of them have had the same issue as mine, so I know there's something going on with my phone, in particular.
The only thing I can think may be doing this is that I use the CWM flash + the FC09 rom method to root my phone. Maybe I should be rooting it using Odin as I used to do back in the day.
When I go back *from* the root to the unroot, I always re-partition and time reset in Odin with a stock ROM. No problems after that.

Sadie, I root by odining cwm with auto reboot unchecked, pop battery out and in, 3 finger to cwm and flash ROM of choice. It definitely sounds like a strange issue.

Hey KG,
Yeah, I think I need to go back to performing the rooting procedure from ODIN. I just can't seem to find the links to that online. God, I've turned into an ultra-n00b again.
What do *you* think is the best way to root using ODIN? I think the problem is that I've been rooting using the easier, flash-to-CWM in Odin and then flash the rooted ROM from CWM. I think I need to do it all from ODIN and repartition at that level.
Epic Touch or S3 here I come! LOL!

This sounds like a rogue app sucking up your memory. Does it happen on stock with all your apps restored?

It happens with every Rom I use. When I flash my phone back to stock the problem goes away.

After you root have you updated superuser and it's binaries?

Is it happening with your new phone as well? I recommended flash the rom of your choice do not install any apps for a day or two. If all is fine install one app a day till you find which app. My guess would be a app that you use that needs root because it doesn't happen on stock. Just my 2 cents.

[Q] Phone loops in Samsung Logo, will not go into recovery!

My phone kept looping on the loading screen, so i pulled the battery and got in CWM. When i did a data wide so i can restore from a saved file the phone got stuck on wiping.
So i pulled the battery and the phone kept on looping the samsung logo and would not go back to CWM, got inside ODIN and tried the stock one click EL29 ODIN method, everything flashes but gets stuck on data.bin. i re-start the process to only be stuck in the same data.bin step. the ODIN one click pro does not stop responding it just gets stuck.
I tried the ODIN method where i load the stock none rooted tar file in pda mode, this method completely passes but when it restarts it goes back to loop mode.
I tried getting into recovery mode but it loops also (Holding Volume up and power)
I am currently trying a different ODIN oneclick TAR file, maybe this will work, i will update when it finishes.
I do not know what to do next, i have flashed all individual files in ODIN also.

Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
I did search all over xda and androidcentral, i was in ics 4.0.4. Thanks for the links i left the phone flashing, when i get home i will read those threads. If it all fails ill just go to sprint tech bench and get a refurbish replament.
You were on a ics ROM ?
Used a ics kernel to wipe data ?
Were using ROM manager?
Using touch cwm ?
Didn't read OP for the ROM either ?
Almost all ics roms will tell you not to use a ics kernel with cwm that is the cause of the bricks ...
If you can answer yes to any of the above you didn't read enough... There are a dozen threads about bricking phones on here that would have saved your phone....good luck at sprint getting it replaced

I work for Sprint....
This is my first time ever posting on any forums and i have been flashing since the EVO came out, i have flashed ICS to the EVO 4G and back to GB with no issues, this phone is the first to give me such issues.

Samsung screwed us by changing some partitions and until we get source to know what they did its best to follow the OP to a T because no one has bricked when using a GB kernel to wipe or flash ....just the ics ones
Yes I had og evo nexus s and 3d ....this one sucks to have to flash the way we do but its the better phone so you do what you have to

The no data tar will completely flash but won't boot on it but you can put it back to stock like that with sfhub el29 no data
Some one in the data thread I gave u did remap the data partition to his Sd card and rigged it .... That could work until you get replaced

Just odin the el26+cwm kernel and reboot into recovery and wipe and flash like normal. I had the bootloop before snd this worked for me.

This is where your /data partition got corrupted. The data wipe in ICS-based CWM.

ODIN OneClick is just serving as the messenger to tell you your /data partition is corrupted. You could have used CWM, ODIN, ODIN OneClick, etc. They would all tell you the same thing. The EMMC memory is actually damaged, it isn't just a partition data problem.
It is unfortunate to have the issue with ICS-based kernels and custom recovery, but that is why all the threads stress using GB-based kernels with custom recovery to do your flashing.
Lesson learned. At least you work for Sprint and can probably get things resolved with less hassle.
Yeah lesson learned. I just did the repair ticket on it and will have one on tuesday.
When the new one comes i will go straight to ICS build 31, and not even mess with anything else.
Its just amazing how we cant figure out a way to format/partition the currupted /data.

It isn't a format issue.
The hardware emmc memory is damaged.
JTAG bitblasting would have overwrote everything if it was fixable. That is failing in this case.
So basically you are asking why we can't reformat a hard drive that crashed and make it work.
You are doing what's right. I had to flash the one click Odin 3 times to get out of a boot loop after trying to restore a GB ROM MD5 from a ICS kernel. Learned the hard way. But if you can get to DL mode, you can usually fix it. After the third time i was able to get into standard Android recovery and do a factory data reset. Then flashed the rom again and it booted right up. I was lucky though. Hope it works out.
PHONE WONT BOOT AFTER USING ALPHA 6 ICS(darchstar)
I was using this rom since it came out and haven't had 1 problem. after just using it normally it froze. did a battery pull and tried to reboot but was stuck on logo with the cm9 animation. so i went to recovery mode i had an error. i tried doing a format and froze. so i did another battery pull and now my phone wont boot into recovery or download mode. all i get is a blue led light. any ideas?
I'd like to think that putting BIGGER red text in the OP's might help but apparently not...

Your /data partition is dead. Formatting/ wiping from ICS recovery is VERY BAD, it makes bricks.... time to use insurance/TEP... sfhubs post on this page applies to you as well...

[Q] flash2ICS from stock using Odin3v1.85, now stuck at S.G.S. II screen

Please, tell me I didn't brick my device on the first night by following instructions to the T...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1562042
1) installed Odin
2) connected phone to PC thru USB
3) rebooted PC and did a turn-off->battery-pull on device. Booted device into Odin mode, started Odin on windows in Admin mode.
4) Odin found device, loaded FC22 ROM + ROOT on PDA button.
5) flash reported as successful, phone went to reboot
6) 20+ minutes later, phone still on Samsung GALAXY S II screen.
7) pulled battery, turned on, see item 6 above, lol. -_-
I can still boot into Odin mode, but since I've proven that I don't know what I'm doing as far as flashing new ROMs goes,... can someone tell me what to do next?
At this point I'd just like a working phone again, whether new ROM or original... But I'd like to make sure I do it correctly and don't run into this again!
EDIT
Flashed "FD26 rooted nodata" over the FC22 I tried, and everything works fine now. Sorry to clutter teh forumz. -.-
First off, why flash a month+ old rom when you could have flashed the couple days old FE22? Anyways, did you perhaps leave the "force reset time" box checked in Odin? Only auto reboot should be checked. Either way, glad to see you got your phone working. Just make sure to be extra careful when touching ICS.

it could be that the rom didnt come with a ics kernel. gb kernels cant boot ics roms. therefore freez at boot logo. simply by flashing a suitable ics kernel would fix that issue.

epic soft brick becarefull

Ok so been flashing roms for a couple of months. Read and watched everything I could find. On bricking and. Followed all instructions. But one brain lapse and soft bricked my phone last night. Here's what happened. I flashed ff18 update zip and rooted phone. Then installed cwm safe version. No problems. Then went to Aokp rom. Had no problems there. Here is where I messed up. I have always. Odined back to el29 root before so I thought you could.do the same with ff18 root. Wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I did this it stuck on boot screen. After playing around with my usb jig finally was able to get to odin mode. Flashed el29 root. Stuck in boot loop. Then got into android. Recovery. Data wipe. And all good now. So lesson learned. Just putting this out there. So people don't make the same mistake. If this helps please hit the thanks button.
Hey agats recovery and kernel v 2.2 would have been the best that's got a patched eMMC,
thanks
Was running agat. The kernel was ff18 that the rom came with. I think it had more to with. When I tried to odin back to ff18 with root. I could be wrong. Everything I read on the new aokp rom it should have been safe.

As long as the Odin package contains the system and kernel you can Odin to and from anything. Because Odin will completely overwrite those two things, again as long as they are both included in the Odin tar. If it only has the system and not the kernel you could find yourself in big trouble.

Drunken or sleepy stuper click something other than pda?
In my experience the only thing that would prevent you from getting to recovery is partition corruption/misinformation.
I bet this was an isolated fluke, or you clicked repartition without pit, or you clicked phone instead of pda, or accidentally unplugged too soon... etc.
Not by any means pointing fingers at anyone btw, I am just listing the ways that I've seen stuff messed up in the past.
There is no option in odin one click ff18 with root. There is no problem with my cord or usb port ether. Rooted phone after and flashed new rom. Did not have anymore problems after that.

Oh sorry, didn't notice the "one click" part.
(I once had a soft brick and the only conclusion I could come to was the emmc/sdcard stuff confused Andy about what goes where, also... some apps (namely boot screen changer) that worked fine on presource kernels now not only not work right, but have even soft bricked some people. There id some type of partition change that somebody is neglecting to mention, methinks...)

Thats my thoughts. Never had a soft brick before. I try to fallow all instructions. I now not to do that again.

Help I think my Note 2 is on it's last leg

so I don't know how it happened
but over the past couple weeks I've had a lot of trouble with my phone
I didn't notice any issues until I flashed Skynote
it started out as just my computer not recognizing it when connected via USB
but problems have escalated further now
for some reason if I try flashing touchwiz roms 1/2 the time TWRP crashes while doing it and if it doesn't it constantly hangs up during flashing(it took me almost 1/2 hour to flash ultimate internation rom last night)
If I get a rom running the phone is constantly hanging when going through the settings menu.. or if an app is installing it will lock up totally for like 5 seconds
I've formatted thru twrp, I wipe the system every time. I've tried countless factory resets
nothing seems to be helping
anyone have any idea what might be going on?

I have faced similar issues twice after changing a rom. The only way back to stability was to odin a stock firmware on to the note II and then to re-root, re-install a custom recovery and reflash the rom.
You can use this thread to get the files to odin back to stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2275844

Try CWM recovery, not twrp....I never use twrp, , always hearing issues with people using that recovery method...Some phone's just don't like it..lol
And like Greg stated...most phones need a thorough cleaning every now and then to get the bugs out.
With TWRP its always good to have the latest version... it can really make a difference

It gave me a headache that I had to use the emergency firmware recovery in kies to revert to stock and reset my flash count. Do try flashing in CWM recovery instead and see what's the result.

Having issues with stock rom

I have my sisters s4 and it has given me nothing but problems. It was set to stock and it wasn't rooted or anything and I'm still having issues. It freezes and hangs on forever and the background screen turns black even though I don't have a black background on it. After a while it resets randomly. I tried everything I could to get it running. I flashed the stock rom through odin like a million times and it's still having issues. I don't know if it's the phone or the stock rom or what but I just wanna get it running. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
