Dropping network signal - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Anyone else having this issue? I live in an area with good coverage not sure if its the phones radio or not. This isn't an issue with just data either, the entire signal triangle on the nav bar goes blank. This only happens for a few seconds (5-15) at s time, but sometimes happens more often than I'd like.
Was wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

I am experiencing a similar issue but I am still trying to trouble shoot it. What ROM and kernel are you on?

I'm on cm10 euroskank with their kernal, but had had the issue on every rom I've been on, a bit less on this one though. I wasn't really stock for long enough to see if it was an issue, nor did I update any ota's. Was there an ota that fixed radios?
By the way it doesn't seem to be a signal thing, but something with the radio or sim card because it drops from full strength to nothing at all.

I'm on rooted stock, I don't have the signal bar actually droppi, but the data network seems to cut out. Things don't load sometimes.

Yea mine will totally drop signal and data and go blank triangle. Also seems to be switching from 3g to h, so I might be in a spot that's on the border of both. I'll see how signal is when I get back in nyc for school

Wifi does the same just as the lte radio, guess thats one of the causes of the Cell Radio Standby bug.

I feel like it's something with the S3 cause I had one on sprint and it was terrible.. it's better on at&t but I notice my brothers phone gets a better signal while right next to me

I am having a big problem with this (on CM10). Even if the signal meter is full and blue, it's like data isn't flowing when the phone screen is off. I will miss a bunch of notifications until I wake the phone up. Then they come rushing in. I hope this is fixed really soon.

Heres what mine looks like with the blank triangle on cm10. On stock or touchwiz it will be a circle with a line through it like a censor sign. Anyone getting that? Or do i have a bad phone?

I've had the same issues, completely stock and on AOKP. No matter what area I'm in I will have random data drop. I could have full signal but nothing loads. Once I turn airplane mode on then off again it works fine. The app Reset Connections also works.

This isn't a data drop though, it's the entire mobile network meaning I can't send texts, call, or anything. Has this happened to you?

Not sure if mine is related but I used to get the same thing (network dropping) accompanied by a soft reboot of Touchwiz. This happened on a stock rooted ROM with stock kernel.
Since I've switched to KT747 for Sammy kernel I think the issue has gone away or I just haven't seen it yet. I flashed to KT747 approx 5 days ago.

Thanks for the input, but I got it the worse on Aokp with kt kernel. I'm gonna get a new sim and see if it helps.
Appreciate the responses

I have been having the same problems to, no solution yet. I was on stock for a while before I rooted it. I had full 4g before I rooted the phone, then right after I rooted I started having problems the same as described here. I tried several different ROMs, and thinking it was an APN issue I tried several settings there. I haven’t been able to find anything yet, still searching and hoping for a solution.

I decided to flash back to stock before bringing it in to at&t and it has been happening less often. Did any of the OTA's effect signal or radio? I rooted basically right after I got it and flashed the ota killer, so i'm not sure if that had anything to do with it.
I'll keep you updated though.
edit: Spoke to soon, going to get a new phone tomorrow.

I may have figured out the problem, or at least a problem. After I rooted the phone it seems to have erased my IMEI#. The IMEI# now has all zeros. I found the thread on hear on how to fix the IMEI which I’ll do later tonight and see if that fixes my problems.

I have heard of having data issues from a bad imei#. I called at&t after returning the phone to stock and they asked me to check the imei# and that's when I found out it was all zeros. Can the imei# being zeroed out mess with data connection?

Mobile data stays on while WiFi is on

I just unlocked my T-Mo GS2 and it's working great so far. Only thing I miss from my HTC Desire was that Mobile Data used to automatically switch off whenever I'm connected to wifi networks.
This doesn't seem to be the case here. Data indicator stays on even though I'm connected to my home wifi.
Is there a setting option that I'm missing somewhere?
I notice this as well. Its sporadic though. Data does sometimes drop off but not always.

Yes, yes! I thought it was my router or something. Sometimes the device will try and use mobile data even if I have a very weak cell signal and a very strong wifi signal. It usually works right after connecting to wifi, but after being connect for a long period of time, it seems to try and switch back to mobile data despite my wifi sleep policy being set to 'Never'.

This issue has already been posted somewhere.... I think in the battery thread. The fix was to get the Llama app and set up a profile to switch wifi off when no wifi available, and to switch 4G off when connected via wifi.
Wifi Fixer app in Market seems to be working nicely so far too.

The system is going to turn on your data when it needs to check info or upload/download data that verifies your device or is of a sensitive nature to the system, such as purchase authorizations in the market. When our data connection is popping up while connected to wifi and you're not doing anything (like making a market purchase), there could be undesirable transmission of data going on. Not to say it's definitely malicious in nature, however like I said I do see data transmissions taking place for no apparent reason. Could be some app or widget I use has an auto update that does something to activate it, but as long as the app keeps transmission and activity levels minimal, it's unlikely to pop up on a security app that alerts based on excessive data usage.

OK, good to know that I'm not alone in this.
It seems that data isn't being used much while connected to wifi. About of 1mb of traffic through all the time that I was connected to wifi. That was a few hours of usage last evening, and then the whole night on idle.
The question is how is this affecting battery life when it just sits there doing nothing.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Mine has been doing that too, I figured out it was an app making it happen. For me it was the app "beat the traffic" because as soon as I uninstalled it, mobile data went away while on wifi.

Same problem, same cause - except mine was a background thread for "Media Hub", which of course is one of those DRM crazy apps that will not work over WiFi. Ran it to just check it out, but nothing worth seeing there so that won't happen again.
When both were running, it seemed each app choose its own path for connectivity, probably related to how the app was coded. For example streaming from web via Flash used WiFi, but most other apps used 4G.
Edit: Add T-Mobile's "My Account" application as one that causes this to happen.
This seems like a side effect of a tremendous amount of bloatware on this phone. Some of those magenta apps only work on the mobile network. Sometimes you will notice that wifi only will show and then all of a sudden you see both the 4g and wifi on at the same time. Hopefully root will take care of the problem.
If it was programmed correctly it would not allow those background apps to update on the 4g network but it seems the coding leaves it open to start up even when on wifi. This is an assumption but from my tests, it seems that's what's causing it.

I reported as a bug prior to discovering its not really a bug. If you go into task manager and open the ram tab and kill all it goes away. I havent had this issue for 3 days now. Its gotta be one of the tmobile apps causing it.

How far can you flash back?

Just as the topic specifies, how far can I safely flash back, build wise? I have a t889 running 4.1.2 uvbmd1.
Long story short at some point about a couple months back their was a leak for an ota it was apparently posted in a wrong thread, supposed to be for the t889 and I later that day discovered it was a different model, same phone. I discovered this when I attended to use triangle away and the app attempted to verify my phone model and it came back with 7100 or something like that. I'm sorry I can't recall exactly. It was then I flashed the correct update. Anyhow here I am today with a couple things that leave me wondering what's going on with my phone.
Battery is apparently taking way to long to charge. Never used to take this long.
And the most important sign that's raised my index of suspicion is the fact that my airplane mode shortcut is no longer an option to be used or applied on my phone. It's still on my wife's phone (same phone) but no longer on mine. See picture....
So in attempt to undo and possibly fix what flashing recent build won't and didn't do I'm curious how far back I can flash without bricking it completely???
Thank you for any assistance.

If you look you'll see no airplane mode switch when there should be. Plus now there's some mobile data switch... where did this come from? ....no it's not supposed to be there. My wife has the same model phone I do and she has the airplane mode switch and also no mobile data switch.
No ideas eh? I understand it's not a normal issue.

Thanks, saw that but couldn't seem to find an answer regarding how far back I can go build wise until there is risk of bricking.
For example
Verizon and moto would constantly lock or change bootloaders so much in New builds that if you flashed back farther than you should have build wise it would completely brick the device.
Want sure if there was a risk of this with Samsung.

Have you tried Odining the current build?

I Odin'd this build and the previous and its still there. That's kinda why I thought going back farther might help. Just don't know if it's safe.

Actually I didn't do it before, but here's where it gets weird. I did a factory reset from recovery yesterday and I kept root, status was normal afterwords.here's the weird part. The mobile data switch was gone, no ware to be found and airplane mode switch returned.
So my happy self decided too use titanium to restore user apps only. When I opened titanium it said my android user id had changed likely due to the reset. It asked me if I wanted to restore the previous so I said yes. It rebooted than I restored user apps only, I checked the box that said exclude system apps. Everything went smoothly.
Sometime after this, it was than that I noticed the stupid mobile data switch was back, airplane mode switch was gone, and the long charging was back as well. Sigh..... so here I am as frustrated as ever....

[Q] I no longer get data. No 4g lte nor 3g.

So, I was super excited when I saw the new paranoid android update. I immediately download it, wipe dalvik cache and cache. Flash it, then did the same with the google apps. But afterwards, I wasn't getting data. I thought it was normal at first. Others said it took a little while for them to get data connection back. So I waited. That was at 4 am. Its now 4:30 pm. And I still have no data. I've tried reflashing both the rom and the Google apps but it has not worked. But while doing that, I accidently rushed and end up wiping my data. Had to restore some of it all the way back to June 16. Because like an idiot, I didn't back it up. But even after that, no data. Its just grey bars. I can make calls and stuff. But no internet connection whatsoever. No H at the top. Doesn't tell me I have 3g nor 4g. And when it did, It was still grey with no connection. I searched the forums, but I couldn't find an answer or someone with the same exact problem. And even when I connect to wifi, I still cannot access the play store. If I try to install something, it gives me an error. ("Easy tether Lite" could not be downloaded due to an error (error retrieving information from server. [RPC:S-5:AEC-0]) ).

Can you explain that for me? I don't know a whole lot about APNs and stuff.
Here is everything I tried.
Resetting my RTN and updating my profile and PRL.
Rebooting (Obviously lol)
Toggling the network modes. I am currently on "LTE". I also do not know what Evod and wcdma are.
Clearing google play services framework cache and data.
Removing my google account and putting it back on my phone.
Reinstalling the ROM
Reinstalling the kernel.
Installing a different kernel.
Trying to go back to 4.2.2 but failed. It just stayed at the booting animation for 30 minutes.
Going into airplane mode and out of it.
Here is what it's doing after all that.
I can't make calls, send messages, nor can I go on the internet. Basically no service, but it has 2 blue bars of cellular network.
It doesn't even show a H, 3g or 4g icon up there. And when it did, it was all grey bars and when they were blue, I still couldn't go on the web.
But now they just have 2 bars, no data icon.
It's been 2 days now, and I am in urgent need of fast help. I am willing to give my delicious cookie recipe to anyone who can provide me with that. (Dead serious).

Toggle airplane mode when data stops working. Only thing I can do to get data working for me personally.
Also, try to avoid that sprint diagnostics trick about resetting things. You're really more likely to cause additional problems then fix anything.

Edit: and please people, stop advising to reset things in sprint diagnostics app, it doesn't fix anything...

It brought back the icon for the 4g signal but it still doesn't work.
Do you know what's causing this?

Are you able to make calls/texts now?
Give it a reboot, then try navigating to google.com in browser to see if data works.
If not, toggle airplane mode again
Do you have strong 4g coverage in your area?

Still no data, and when I try to make a call. It says my account couldn't be validated.
But I believe my services are on.

Now your problem is the provisioning... Thanks to that reset in sprint diagnostics app...
You may be able to provision via WiFi and if not you'll need to make a call to sprint.
If you do need to call sprint to re-provision, just play dumb. "Can't make calls or use mobile data, haaalp me pleeeez", they don't need to know any more info.

I googled provision via wifi. But I couldn't find anything helpful.
How do I go about doing this?

No internet, maybe blocked by T-Mobile on my Note 3

Hello everyone,
Since 2 days now, my 4G/LTE/EDGE symbols have been constantly appearing and dissapearing. I am in the NF1 firmware and rooted. It was working great but now it is like goin on/off like every 5 seconds. I think my data got blocked by T-Mobile but I'm really not sure.
You can see the video I recorded about the issue here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Vy0A4LQD_E
Anyone had this happened to them before?

That's not normal, Never ran nf1 myself went straight to nf4. NF4 is basically a fix for issues that occurred with NF1, maybe update

It was working fine for one week, but I think they blocked my access to it. I'm trying to communicate and check what is the problem.
Phone calls and messages works great however, is only the data that is not working.

You think you went over your allotted data limit? If that was so then the symbol would switch to 4G instead of 4Glte, Maybe you are right that you've passed your limit and maybe you should check settings/more networks/mobile networks and ensure that network mode is set to LTE/WCDMA/GSM and check that mobile data is enabled.........and my last guess could be that maybe your sim is loose or failing?

I think it is a bug in the system. I used 2056.47GB according to the My T-Mobile website (tethering non stop), but on the use tab it tells me I used 2048GB of Unlimited. Maybe that stopped my data. I guess on the 17th it will reset and I'll have internet again since calls and messages works correctly. Also, there's no alert on my account and neither a message sent, so my guess is their system just limit the data to 2048GB somehow.
2 terabyte wow. I use net10 on att towers and have massive data connection issues as of the past 2 days and i just put a new monthly on it.

I called them and they said the data was not blocked and that it was not possible to block because it is unlimited, which I think is clearly a system bug or a hard or soft limit of 2048GB
I find it really hard to believe that you managed to use 2TB of data, even if you're tethering. I'm not saying you're lieing, but I think there's something wrong on the backend here that's not reporting appropriately.
There's obviously some kind of issue occuring when you authenticate on the T-Mobile network. My suggestion is either ODIN the phone back to stock and try again, or go into a Store and see if they can tell you anything about your account that's throwing flags at them.
I hope they did block you.

Yeah I think they did that throttling thing because of me
Well, I'm hoping the 17th I get the internet again, of course more carefully. I was just looking at the "how much unlimited data means" limit and I seem to have found it.
If not, the reps said it could be the SIM Card and I have to go to the store then.

How can you even call TMO with a straight face? 2 TB is abusing it, dude.
Can you try a few things?
1) Turn the phone off then back on see how long you have data for.
2) Force the data band of the phone and see how long data works for.
3) Put your SIM into a different device and see how long you have data for.
And of course if you can try all these things on a few different towers just to be sure.
Also can you try cooking an egg on your phone? That thing must be running pretty HOT.

All of that was what the reps said me to do, but data doesn't work.
Here is the bug I suspect, which makes me believe data is turned off at 2048GB:
In this image, the data reported 2048GB, but it let me use a little more. It just stayed at 2048GB

Here you can see that it is reporting what I really used before data was turned off:
I know I may have abused but still they didn't really said nothing about it, and they said blocking can't be done on the phone call. They said to visit the store for a phone/SIM checkup.
You can try to reset your NV values and modem. Below is a link to the thread with instructions.

I have just confirmed myself that this is indeed a system limitation by T-Mobile. Today my cycle reset and I got my data back.
So, in conclusion, T-Mobile unlimited plan indeed have the 2048GB limit.
I hope people aren't complaining about a 2 terabytes limit. I felt like I was abusing when going through 10 gigs a month.

OMG...2TB of mobile data, that's insane!! Even I have The 105Mbps Comcast plan and I can only manage to use 170GB a month(streaming Netflix and downloading torrents everyday)

Wifi+ never switches off?

Having my Mate 20x for 3 months now and being generally happy with it, I recently encountered an annoying bug.
It seems that whenever I connect to a WiFi, that doesn't have Internet capability currently, the phone uses my mobile data to connect, download or sync. Like as if Wifi+ was enable (which isn't the case).
As I'm a permanent traveler, currently in Africa, connecting to WiFi that temporarily don't work, happens quite often, especially after a blackout or something.
Anyway, my Wifi+ is switched off, I restarted and switched it also a few times, but my mobile data is still being used when WiFi doesn't work properly.
I have the EVR-L29 still on the 9.0.0.208 version. The 9.0.0.300 update has popped, but I'm afraid to download it, due to newly introduced crashed and since I basically don't have any other problem with the phone and awesome battery life. Having had Mate 8 and Mate 10 before, I had a few times, that updating too early made it less than worthwhile and since I'm not rooted and despite using Android since Froyo, I'm meanwhile beyond the flashing and downgrading days of old.
What would you guys recommend to remedy the problem?
Thanks!

I think this is an unfortunate feature if emui on this device. I recently asked the question of why is 4G still showing on my status bar when I'm connected to WiFi. On other devices that I've owned connecting to WiFi would visibly remove the mobile data connection. It would be appear that in your case connecting to WiFi truly doesn't disable mobile data.
How about if you turn WiFi+ off, and try connecting to the dead access point, what happens then? Does it still use mobile data ? I just looked at WiFi + and it states that it connects automatically to mobile data and or WiFi to stay online. So perhaps it's doing as intended?

Yes, my Wifi+ is always off. I never used that feature. But I noticed also as you mentioned, that the mobile data counter is still on, even when connected to WiFi. And when the WiFi status has that 'exlamation mark' meaning it's not connected to the Internet, that counter is still running, thus taking data from mobile data.

On the attached screenshot it shows mobile data field as present with WiFi on with my device. On other devices that field Mobile Data would show "disconnected". I wish I could help further , I'm new to emui.

I knowwwww... But I'm reluctant to set up everything manually again... Might probably go through all those updates once I have a stable and fast WiFi again somewhere.

I don't think there is. It seems an emui feature.
Like I mentioned earlier, other Android devices I've used in the past automatically shut down/ disable mobile data when WiFi is connected. Seems like with this device you don't truly know if you're on mobile data or wifi.?

Interesting tid bit I just came across and thought I'd share with you. So for the first time on this device I ran optimize battery under the battery settings menu.
It suggested I turn off mobile data :silly: very confusing if you ask me.
Seems like Emui has a major status bar flaw in it in this respect. When I turn mobile data off via the pull down quick toggle and also turn WiFi off. It still shows 4G LTE on status bar. I guess this is the issue!
Aida64 app shows that mobile data is disconnected when on WiFi. Still doesn't answer why 4G icon persists when mobile data and wifi is off though.
In Developer Options>~Networking~Mobile data always on~toggle
Tried that?
