Works like a charm -- and much faster than the other one! Only trouble: Though my device is rooted, I cannot fully access the filesystem with it (e.g. list contents below /data). Is it anyhow possible doing that? Any steps to be done from the user's side -- or any update to your code?

Ubuntu on N1, Desire next?

It's a chroot. I don't know if it's me, but this isn't fascinating since Debian could be chrooted already (right?) - its the native boot we really want. This still runs the Android kernel.

I think it would be very facinating.. Android kernel running or not, I'd still be happy to be able to have a full worthy Ubuntu desktop enviroment to play around in. Think of all the apps you can then run! Millions!
But this is an ubuntu x11 session opened via VNC!! this isn't ubuntu on android!
Why would you need ubuntu on a phone? I don't get it...

Why not just try to use the guide for N1? It should work I think... will try when I have some spare time.
I thought using the N1 guide would work, but i kept getting "bootubuntu not found" (or something similar) when trying to launch bootubuntu. Also I thought Ubuntu would be running on the phone itself, using vnc to access X11, in effect giving the more or less full Linux experience from the phone alone, or have I misunderstood?
N1 guide doesn't work
The N1 guide doesn't work on the Desire because the ubuntu.sh trys to install files onto the devices system partition. But this fails because we don't have write permission to the system partition unless the device is in recovery. I booted into recovery, mounted the /system partition & pushed the files to /system/bin using adb. I then changed the files permission using. I can now run bootubuntu but it fails, I think it's trying to mount ubuntu.img somewhere on the system partition. I think the bootubuntu script needs edited but i hav en't had a chance to do it yet.
You can mount on the system partition regardless of write permissions.
If this is the same as the debian one the mount point is /data/local/mnt
/

G-Slate root

There's no G-Slate forum yet, so this goes here.
How to root your T-Mobile G-Slate
This process works under Linux. The hard part under Windows would be mounting a file as an ext4 filesystem, but if you can do that you win.
You need:
The four files in the gslate_root.zip archive attached to this post.
To root:
Put those four files in a directory and open a terminal to there.
Shut down your G-Slate and plug it into your computer via USB.
Hold down both volume buttons and press the power button. The G-Slate will not appear to turn on, but it'll go into APX mode.
Running "lsusb" should show an entry "0955:7820 NVidia Corp."
Run the command "sudo su" to get a root shell. Running "ls" should still show the four files.
./nvflash --bl bootloader.bin --getpartitiontable ptable.txt
./nvflash -r --read 8 system-orig.img
Wait while 400 meg of data copies.
cp system-orig.img system.img
mkdir system
mount -o loop system.img system
cp su system/bin
chmod 4755 system/bin/su
cp Superuser.apk system/app
umount system
./nvflash -r --download 8 system.img
Wait while it copies back.
./nvflash -r --sync
Press the reset button under the sim cover to reboot.
There's your rooted G-Slate. Making that process "one click" is going to suck.
Troubleshooting:
You may need to install the package libstdc++6 or lib32stdc++6 to get nvflash to run.
You may need to use "sudo" on the nvflash commands.
If you want to try to make this work on Windows, the nvflash.exe binary and the APX USB drivers are are available from nvidia.com
This is unbelievable! Can't wait to give it a shot.
EDIT: For future reference, DO NOT use Virtual Box to try and root your device. There are issues getting the drivers to work properly. Lsusb will not work. The following methods have been tested and work:
1. Wubi install of Ubuntu Linux
2. VMware install of Ubuntu Linux
3. Dual-boot install of ""
4. Dedicated Linux box (duh)
And remember: If at first you don't succeed, try try again. Then visit our IRC channel.
Trying this on Windows 7 is gonna be a trip. Never workt with ext4 before.
Install Ubuntu and you can dual boot into Windows or Ubuntu. That's what I do.

This method is confirmed working. Thank you so much for the hard work Chandon. It wasn't very hard to complete on Linux. I can't believe my G-Slate is rooted!!!! Hell yes! Oh and the device is not wiped during the process either just to let everyone know!

Would it be possible to pull the recovery partition off now?
Why I ask. I am in a bit of a pickle. My slate will get to the first LG boot screen and then freeze. It does not even go to the boot animation. I can still get into fastboot and APX mode and it is seen by my computer.
How did i get here. While poking around in fastboot I am pretty sure i wiped they recovery partition D'OH.
I was able to complete the steps listed (for root) with out issue but still cannot get past the boot screen since this is only modifying the system partition.
I am thinking that if that could be pulled from the device i could flash it to mine and bring my slate back to life?
Am I way off on this one?

Attached are all the reasonably small partitions that I could pull off my device with nvflash. This should be everything except /system, /cache, and /data.
I suggest backing everything up before flashing any of these, on the off chance that there's some difference between devices.

Any chance you know off hand which one of those partitions is the recovery?
I suggest doing a Wubi install [1], where Ubuntu pretends to be a Windows app (which you can then uninstall like any other app later). Alternatively you could try using VirtualBox [2], but that's less guaranteed to work.
The only reason I wouldn't do this with a Live CD is that you'd risk losing your backup of the stock /system partition when you reboot. It would also make losing power in the middle of the flash really annoying.

i prefer Ubuntu just cause you can install it in windows then simply restart and boot into Linux or Windows. This way you don't need to worry about not having Linux again.

I'm sure that /system is 8 and the kernel is 13, but don't know about anything else. You might be able to figure it out by reading the ptable.txt file generated by the --getpartitiontable command - it's pretty clear except for the part where it uses 3 letter partition names.

No kidding. Since the linux method failed miserably for me, I've decided to press forward with trying to do it on Windows. Problem is, I have yet to find any way to mount an ext4 filesystem on Windows. There are several options out there that will allow you to read ext4 filesystems on Windows, but not write. Any suggestions?

[Q] Cyanogenmod 7 and Linux

Hi all,
I have just received my Defy and I'd like to flash Cyanogenmod 7, I've flashed numerous roms to numerous phones in the past but I was always using Windows. I now use Linux (latest ubuntu derivative).
Is there a guide anywhere for flashing from a linux machine? My google-fu is pretty much pulling up a blank on the subject!

There's just two things to know:
1) You don't use RSD Lite to flash sbf files, you use this instead: http://blog.opticaldelusion.org/2011/02/sbfflash-updates.html
2) To root the phone you don't use SuperOneClick. Instead, get this DefyRoot pack: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076138. Extract the pack, run the script using sudo.

I got the SDK and extracted to a directory of my choice, how on earth do I use it though, executing android in a terminal does not work, the rest is simple, can't believe I'm stuck on this part lol
I sorted that, I ran android and downloaded the development tools, I now have adb. I need to research more now, ran adb via terminal, then tried to run the rootdefy.sh but it told me adb wasn't started! see this is going to be a learning curve in Linux
You don't need the SDK, the RootDefy pack has everything necessary. I never installed the SDK.
ADB starts automatically if it isn't running yet. Did you run the script as sudo, like I told you? If not, there can be various problems. It's not necessary to run it with sudo if there's an udev rule for the phone. The script attempts to write one, but I'm not sure if it still works with the latest udev versions.
So let's do it manually:
- unplug the phone
- create a /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules file containing this:

- now reload udev:

- just to be sure, kill all previous adb instances:

- now plug the phone in and run the script again; with or without sudo, it shouldn't make a difference anymore

I didn't have a GN until this week so my only LIMITED experience was with my nephew's GN and I was not able to connect it to my Ubuntu 11.10, 11.04, 10.10 or Mint 12. I got my own this week and started the search. Here is how you do it courtesy of Shannon VanWagner

1-

2- download libmtp tar.gz from http://sourceforge.net/projects/libmtp/files/libmtp/
3-cd to the directory you downloaded to: Download in this case, case sensitive

4- extract the tar package

please make sure you check the file version, this file changes as it is updated and change it accordingly per the above website
5- cd to the newly created folder that has the extracted file:

7- while in the same directory in the terminal, copy the rules from there to the udev folder:

9- open up gMTP, go to edit/prefrences and check the box for Always Show Download Path. This way when you are downloading from the phone to your computer, you are asked to choose a location. Use the Add button to upload from your Linux Box to the phone. Delete does, well, Delete a file.

I'm just wondering, why people still using USB cable for file transfers? There's gazillion threads here about broken USB ports and all of them are reall. I had my self that problem on SGS2 and since then i started to use Wifi Explorer. It's just safer and easier.
Don't take this as thread spoiling, i'm really thankful to everyone who shares info. l'm just trying to warn you, because USB port problem does exist even if you're extremely careful as i am.

I love Wifi Explorer as well but you do run a much greater risk of a corrupted file over wifi as opposed to usb.
I didn't have to do step 2. All I did was install libusb-dev and install gMTP and it worked.
That said I hate what google did here! I can no longer play music via usb on my car deck because of this

Thanks for the suggestion. I do use that especially since Amazon App store had it as the Free Paid app of the day a few months back. But you still need your wired connection for important files like radios, kernels, and roms. hate corrupted radios
Then i must be lucky, had no corrupted transfers yet (or at least i didn't notice that)

gMTP is in the Ubuntu software center. I guess you can get it that way too.

a little info may help. What version of Ubuntu are you running? Any errors?
You may also want to look in to mtpfs which is a FUSE filesystem providing access to MTP devices. It's easy to use and with correct permissions you can mount the device as a user.
I've been using it and there is a long pause mounting the device for some reason but read / write speeds are very good. When the phone is connected you simply mount it with:
mtpfs [mount point]

Make a directory to mount it at (~/phone or something). Connect your phone in MTP mode then type:
mtpfs ~/phone
It's user space so you don't need to use su or sudo. You do however need to have FUSE support in your kernel. You may need some of the other dependencies but if you install mtpfs in mint it should pull those in (I'm using Mint 12).

Basic information
PC: Windows 7, pro. USB 2.0 port. ADB Driver "Drivers-AllwinnerA10-32bits\32Bit_Win_7_Vista_XP" from 2011. ADB Platform-Tool, Android Debug Bridge version 1.0.31. Logged in as normal User, not Admin. The development kit is not installed, I just downloaded the Platform-Tool, unzipped it and started "adb" - I just want to make a f***ing backup :crying:

ALLWINNER A13 9". Android Version 4.2.2. USB Debugging enabled. Detail Info's:

Problem:
I do not get a connection from the PC to the tablet. Also no RSA Key question comes up at the tablet. The adb tool just throws an error :"device not found". I tried several things, log in as Admin, "adb wait-for-device", plugging and unplugging ... nothing helped. The adb tool works fine, I tested it with a Samsung Galaxy S2. I'm not quite sure about the adb USB driver on windows, but there is no exclamation mark nor other problems reported. So this should be fine.
Anyone any hint, tip or solution? Would be great - gathering for hours with this problem - searching forum 'n stuff....

Try with uberizer or MTKDroid tools. Just connect and select adb terminal.

I think since in Android 4.2.2 the RSA Key authentication was introduced, something is wrong with the connection. Because I would expect the RSA Key question on the tablet, but the tablet does not show this dialog.
By the way, I recognized that the USB driver for the ADB interface is titled "Drivers-AllwinnerA10" but the tablet has a A13 core. But I do not find another driver at the moment and the vendor ID -VID_10D6&PID_0C02&REV_0202&MI_01- fits (otherwise, windows wouldn't install it anyway). Does it make sense to search for another driver?
hi from messing with various drivers and android devices i have found that installing PDA net for windows (theirs and android version too but not needed) once pdanet installs let the drivers for your phone be installed, if by any chance you have drivers already installed what you can do is go to device manager, click on your device uninstall the drivers, unplug your phone and then open pdaNET a window will come up waiting for you to connect your phone and the driver installation process will begin.
The program downloads the correct driver for mostly any model phone you have and works flawlessly with ADB, if by any chance this helped just give me a thanks !

Thanks for the tip. It really installed an USB driver as you said (I've deinstalled the other driver before). But sadly the result is the same. I can't access the ADB interface - same error "Device not found".
At this point I want to say thanks to all viewers of this thread, it seems really to be not an easy task. I'm still open minded in any direction and would be happy for any suggestion what I might try.
Even a hint, how I could reduce the possibilities for the root of my problem. I'm still not quite sure, if the driver is the problem or even if the tablet itself has some kind of software defect on this kernel version - By the way, does anyone have the same kernel version (posted at the beginning - 3.4.0+ [email protected] --- repeated for your convenience) of Jelly Bean (4.2.2)? Do you have experience with the ADB interface then?

I have nearly an identical tablet except mine has the PnP code of Vendor 10D6/Device 0C01 and it shows as P706 on the USB description.
I installed PDAnet, that actually was able to upload the Android version of PDAnet to the tablet, so I think that's a definite for the driver working. But I'm also having trouble getting ADB to list the device and I'm using the latest ADB from the SDK. Since ADB tries to setup a network server, I'm wondering if the ADB driver on windows has to be tethered as a NIC somehow?, just a theory.
I'm using a fresh install of XP and can do a complete rollback, so I'm certain it's not the OS.
There's also another quirk about this tablet. I wanted to do a backup of the firmware from this device. Techknow's utilities use ADB to issue several shell commands to copy "partitions" to the SD card, I thought I might as well try to do that manually only to find what would've been copied as /dev/block/nanda, nandb, etc. is named /dev/block/acta, actb, etc. instead. But lack of "root" means I can't read any of those partitions or even copy su into /sbin.
Uberizer isn't any good since as far as I can see that also uses ADB. Any known issues with versions of ADB? or even any other tools which do similar to ADB?, or even a way to "root" these devices just by Terminal and SD?

Ah, okey, soz I got the USB thing a bit mixed up. My tablet does have the same code, I assume the 0C01 is when it's in recovery mode (power on with volume + pressed)
I also realised the driver that was working wasn't one from PDAnet.
I've updated the working 32-bit driver with the version of ADB I'm using and included it in the attachment. Maybe you can try that and see if you have any progress.
I'll keep posted on this thread.

Copy .android from the attachment into your %USERPROFILE% directory (i.e. C:\Document and Settings\<user> on XP or C:\Users\<user> on Windows 7)
You can check what the user directory is by DIR %USERPROFILE% in the "DOS" command line (%USERPROFILE% is case sensitive).
ADB should list your device when you do adb devices in the "DOS" command line.
Basically, adb_usb.ini with a custom identifier was missing.

Right, I've made up a pack to automate putting SU on the device and setting up permissions on SU and BUSYBOX.
!!! This is only for the VID_10D6&PID_0C02 device, your mileage may very with other devices. !!!
DRIVER directory should contain the USB driver you need, otherwise try installing PDAnet and tell it to replace the driver.
Install USB driver, run SUME.BAT
to hopefully backup all the needed stock firmware to SD;
adb shell
su
cat /dev/block/acta > /mnt/sd-ext/acta.img
cat /dev/block/actb > /mnt/sd-ext/misc.img
cat /dev/block/actc > /mnt/sd-ext/system.img
exit
exit
adb kill-server

Yes, that was it! I copied the adb_usb.ini file into the .android user directory (which only contains these ascii chars "0x10D6" - no CR no LF or anything else) and it worked out !!!

There was no RSA-Key question at all on the tablet!!!
as I did the full backup with "adb backup -apk -shared -all" I was asked on the tablet to confirm this
So obviously something strange is going on here. Since it is claimed everywhere the with Android 4.2.2 the ADB interface should be generally RSA-Key protected. Okay, might be that I misunderstood something here :silly:
At least this problem is solved and I appreciated every comment in this thread. One question would be final to answer:
Who should have brought the adb_usb.ini to my PC. The ADB driver ? The ADB Platform-Tool package? So, whom to blame here - NO - just kidding :laugh:
I did briefly try the platform-tools (since I didn't mind the OS being trashed), they didn't add any adb_usb.ini and there isn't any real indication the file was needed/didn't exist, they could've simply put a note on the ADB utility when it didn't find any devices.
I'm not sure what ADB backup does. As far as I know the mounted partition images are differently named to various backup tutorials, so I get the feeling ADB backup just simply copies the user data and not much else. I recommend doing the backup I mentioned as well, it'll at least capture a copy of the boot partition, which if the device doesn't have that you'll probably need to revert to using live suite or some other firmware utility to restore it. Getting the firmware for that is another story, read a fair amount of posts here and other places on the net that don't sound fun.
I personally still can't get superuser to behave for using su on the terminal/term.apk (I want to remove useless "system" apps and make sure the device isn't talking back to anyone, i.e. google), but I'll keep tinkering.
My main aim for getting one of these tablets was to boot other firmware from the SD slot, but it looks as if the u-boot process is locked to internal NAND. So might have to modify it by adding "fatload mmc" to the script.

Quick Update;
Right the permissions thing turned out to be an issue with Superuser, dunno why. So replace the su binary from SuperSU (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053) into my SUME pack and install the Superuser.apk by;
adb root
adb shell mount -o rw,remount /system
adb push Superuser.apk /system/app
as for stripping back the Applications, I've got it down to this as bare bones
adb pull /system/app backup\system\app
to backup system applications before you do anything
I found if you do delete any applications and then android gets stuck at the logo, just adb push them back and it'll boot without reboot when you've got the chain right.

A few odds and sods missing will make settings close, but it's trivial stuff. Personally don't like the sound of Fused Location, but it won't boot without it and I haven't seen any dodgey traffic from it (yet).
I recommend installing Droidwall with adb push /system/app, before installing games.
And modifying /etc/hosts with 127.0.0.1 to certain you know whos and advertisers.
Some of my personal choice replacement applications (so far);
Total Commander over ES file explorer.
Opera Classic over the inbuilt browser (although I'm still trying to remove the default search engine).

More update;
Discovered some new things;
BACKUP FILES WITH "ADB PULL" BEFORE MODIFYING ANY FILES!!!
I think performancepolicy.apk needs to be added to the bare bones application list, afaics from looking inside the package it sets system performance stuff, so likely throttling to preserve battery power.
bin_cfg.xml in /misc which can be modified by
adb shell mount -o rw,remount /misc
then adb pull, edit and push the file back
the line in there for "backlight_brightness" 780;1020;780 can be changed to 240;1020;240 which dims the backlight substantially saving battery power. not sure if 240 is the absolute minimum, but 120 seems to be too low afaics. interestingly information on the settings is in the files named _userview.xml
build.prop in /system which can be modified by
adb shell mount -o rw,remount /system
then adb pull, edit and push the file back
and then chmod 644 /system/build.prop
the lines in there for ro.wifi.signal.level.# can all be set to 0, this theoretically cuts the wifi power usage to less than 1mW, again saving battery. if android doesn't boot fully on reboot it's because chmod hasn't been set, you should be able to adb back in and correct.
please be careful modifying either file as both seem to have safety limits imposed on certain device components (i.e. battery temprature), messing with those can make the tablet stop working.
