How to invoke the search key shortcut? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello Everybody
I use Voice Speed Dial up extensively.
I find it very convenient to invoke the application in Google Nexus S using search key.
How to do the same in newer generation mobile phone which has just 3 keys?

Kinda' obnoxious that they removed search, in my opinion.
Most (all?) of the custom roms allow you to add new things to the nav bar.
But if you're on JellyBean...just swiping up from the nav bar opens GNow. Search bar included.

assign soft key action...

ok, i'm not getting a response in q&a, so, sorry if this is in the wrong section...
anyone know if it's possible to assign a shortcut to the softkey action
(ie. the softkeys are different in word to those on the today screen, can i assign a shortcut to that action)
i use a bluetooth keyboard which can be configured to any shortcut. it would be real handy to be able to just hit a couple of keys rather than reach for the devices tiny screen everytime i want to activate the menu.
cheers
or even just to have the pop up menu in word would be real handy
cheers
anyone!???

Predictive text doesn't work on all apps using keyboard

for me anyway it doesn't work (green letter suggestions) on google search widget, on internet, or on market search. Does work on email, 3Banana app and messaging.
Is that how others find it?
Keyboard
That seems to be the default behaviour of the stock keyboard. Try searching and installing the HTC_ime keyboard as it has more configurable options including the one you want!

Install this:

You have option to enable that predictive text on search input, etc.
It is the same as the stock keyboard, but much more features
I have installed it, but can't get it to "select" eg "long press on any text input field" as the install instructions thread says to do.
As in hold my finger on the input box? Does nothing.
As in hold a key? That just toggles it.

[Q] Remap Search Softkey To Camera ??

Remap Search Softkey To Camera .... is there one specifically available for the Evo?? It would be great to have a designated camera button
Edit the file /system/usr/keylayout/supersonic-keypad.kl. The first 8 lines (without a # preceding them) define the action assigned to each key, and its behavior.
Just find the line that calls on the SEARCH action, change it to the CAMERA action, then reboot. (I gave it a quick try, and while the search button does launch the camera, it only does so on long-press.)
Some info about this can be found here.
Additionally, CM7 ROMs allow you to define custom actions for the search key, on tap and on long-press.
Also found this....costs 99cents but rather pay than taking the chance of messing up something

Apps make a great alternative to modifying files directly, especially considering it's easier to reinstall a few apps that make changes for you than it is to remember how to perform all your mods after an update or ROM change.

[Q] Dedicated Voice Search Button or "App"

In previous versions of Android I used Google Voice Actions within numerous other apps. I.E. Using a shortcut to start accepting speech actions immediately in Widgetlocker. It seems that in ICS on the Galaxy Nexus there is no dedicated "app" to immediately launch voice action input. There is only the Google Search app which defaults to entering text. I have looked in the Market and couldn't find a 3rd party solution.
Anybody experiencing a similar scenario or have an idea of a workaround?

I share your frustration with this issue. I'm waiting on a solution as well.
Yes, I put in a request for this in the Themes and Apps section.
Soft key support with short press = search and long press = voice search would be ideal.

Click to collapse
I'll +1 that suggestion.

Gboard shortcuts don't work

One function I use a lot is the keyboard shortcuts.
However, the shortcuts created on the Gboard do not work.
For example, create a shortcut by typing "gm" to appear in the top bar the phrase "good morning".
The shortcut phrase does not appear.
Any sollution ?
