Advantages of rooting? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry for the noobish question but what are the actual advantages of rooting? What can i do with root on my phone that i can't do without? I don't specifically mean on the play but on other android devices also. I have only rooted and flashed Cyanogenmod 7 on an orange san francisco/ ZTE blade and that was with a step by step guide so don't know much about it. I know i can overclock and remove adds but other than that, what can rooting offer?
Thanks for any help. It's much appreciated

Administrative super user abilities, besides certain apps having the ability to delete system apps and such It allows you to use an app called Barnacle tether, it turns your play into a wifi hot spot.
But to answer your question as simple as possible....It allows you to install a different "genera" of apps if you will.

I can already turn my play into a WiFi hotspot?
Does rooting offer big advantages? Becuase there's no point of me rooting and then having no idea what to do after i'm rooted (i.e the advantages and which apps to get)
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using xda app-developers app

Ugh... rooting is probably the bread and butter of Android.. with it you can edit system apps to apply certain tweaks; you can freeze or uninstall system apps that are hogging CPU usage cycles, RAM usage, and precious battery life; install and use 'special' apps that only function when rooted (i.e. FaceNiff, WiFi Kill, etc.),; BACKUP game progress/settings and app settings; really, there a bunch of uses of rooting your phone.
PS, WiFi tether is NATIVE to Xperia PLAY.

You learn by asking, so what do you mean by native to the xperia play? Also, i've read about flashing ROMs and such and read about backing everything using ROM manager or titanium backup so you can quickly and easily resotre everything if you don't like the ROM. How can you do this? If i were to flash a custom ROM but didn't like it, how would i restore my phone exactly as it is now, on stock 2.3 gingerbread with all the apps and data? Also, is there a way i can see all the apps that work only with root so i can see what they do?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using xda app-developers app

As far as I know, CWM doesn't work with our phones. CWM is a recovery which allows us to backup a "frozen" state of our phone so we can restore it back in case we screw it up (i.e. bad custom ROM flash that bricks the phone).
I tried ROM Manager hours ago just to make a Nandroid backup, but the app said it can't install ClockWorkMod because our phone is not supported yet. So, as far as I know about Nandroid backups, I can't help you much. But there are other CWM-based recoveries that are probably compatible with R800i, but I haven't tried them yet.
As for Titanium Backup, it allows you to freeze/defrost/backup system and user apps, among other awesome features, though, this is the only reason I bought TB Pro version. It's other functions range from cleaning the Dalvik cache, integrating updates to system apps, converting system apps to user apps and vice versa, and many others.
As for seeing which apps work with root, that I don't know. Developers of apps that use root access usually state on their Google Play pages that they use root, though. Some other apps also have tags on their description that go as far as saying "THIS IS A ROOT APP ONLY."
EDIT: Turning your Xperia PLAY into a hotspot is easily set up within the settings.

Thanks for the help. Still unsure whether to root. I've lasted this long without it but i do need more internal storage. This can be done with root, no?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using xda app-developers app

Oh yes! Definitely!

Thanks. If you understand, i want all the advantages of rooting and don't want to miss out on anything! Which is why i wanted to know other benefits.

Go ahead and root with superoneclick. You got nothing to loose. Tho if I were you I'd you Flashtool to revert back to 2.3.3 (if you're not already on it) THEN use superoneclick.

Flashtool? why revert back to 2.3.3? Also, where can i install superoneclick?

(This may only apply to Verizon users) But 2.3.4 for us Verizon customers broke: Google Talk, Push notifications and connection to google services. (r800x)
Anyway if this isn't you download it here: http://shortfuse.org/?page_id=2
Also go to settings > applications > [x] allow unknown sources > development > [x] USB debugging.

Thanks!

Flash tool is the easiest way to flash ftf files and kernels for Xperia phones. Pick it up in my signature if you want. The drivers are included in flash tool of you need them
Edit: only flash non stock based kernels if your boot loader is unlocked.

ftf files are stock roms. Like Verizon 2.3.3 ftf for example.
Custom kernels allow you to flash custom roms. But in your situation if you just want root use superoneclick.

Yup, now If you want to unlock your bootloader let me know. That's a whole other process, but worth it if you have the time & money.

What would unlocking the bootloader do?

Allow you to flash custom kernels and roms. The Xperia Play isn't getting ICS, but with an unlocked bootloader you can get ICS on your phone. They're working on Jellybean as we speak.

Why don't you guys just disable all that bloatware. Using the built in apps manager under settings you can disable almost all bloatware.
This is a really slick option LG has put into their phone.
I disabled:
Android Keyboard ( I installed TouchPal-my favorite keyboard)
Android Live Wallpapers
at&t hot spots
at&t Navigator
At&t address book
Birds and cities
Bubbles
facebook
finance
google play books
google play movies
google play music
google +
news
polaris office
social+
talk
today+widget
twitter
voice dialer
voice search
weather
wi-fi share
world clock
If you so choose you can also disable others suchs as maps, smart share, city id etc, all without rooting and I've had no problems with reboots etc and have seen battery life increase.

What bloatware do you think is in your Nexus 7 anyway? Just disable them using the built-in mechanism, no need to remove anything.
Yea I've compiled aroma installers just for removing bloatware but this is usually carrier related garbage or touchwiz/motoblur/sense stuff. None of that exists here so I wouldn't even spend the time creating that. I don't think there is any bloatware here just maybe "unwanted" apps. which once rooted can be easily removed or just frozen/disabled.
where are bloatwares in a stock jellybean rom?simply deactivate what you don't want\like..no need to cancel..for example a rom like bamf has built-in the tool to deactivate system\apps.very usefull for a person in yours position..
As a matter of interest what apps/files can be frozen via titanium? Anyone got a list of which are safe to remove?

I'm interested in this too. My device isn't yet rooted. You can force stop apps from settings but I believe they start up again at reboot which is annoying. Maybe time to root my device!

NO! There is a Disable button on the same screen with the Force Close that disables apps since ICS.

[Q] T-999 T-Mobil Network Unlock

Hi There,
a year ago i bought a S3 from T-mobil in the USA. Now i want to use it with a different carrier and called for an unlock the support for an unlock code. After 6 Times calling and more than 3 months waiting i now try to find another to unlock the phone.
My problem here is not that i can't find information, it's that is so much information.
So i got a t-999 S3 on 4.1.2
I want to get botherd by those tecnical things as less as possible, and don't need the root if it's not nessesary.
ALso i don't need all those T-mobil apps that are pre installed.
1. Option:
(easyist Option?) downgrade to 4.1.1 with odin and unlock with the servicemenu (UMTS-Debug...)
(where can i find the "stock" 4.1.1 and where the upgrade and afterwards can i normally upgrade?)
everybody says easy as pie but I'm not so sure)
2.Option:
a) Rooting the device and put with odin CF-Root-SGS v6.4 on it (it sounds like a generic s3 version without tmobil cr*p so maybe without the lock and the apps (if yes can i normally update afterwards?)
b)rooting it like in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=QPeIZZVYHbY and installing an unlock app?
(like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761045)
c) rooting it with this wierd auto CF things
What do you thing is the best and cheapest way to to that.
(And maybe some help here ->noob)
Thank you for you time Gentleman
Downgrade modem

The best option since you want not root is to downgrade to 4.1.1 firmware which will also downgrade the modem, you will find the firmware in the development threads (stickied) after you downgrade you can do the service menu unlock.. As for the T-Mobile apps, they will stay there unless you root, or disable/hide them (no root needed for disabling or hiding)

There are some that will not let you disable them though, (usually the ones you want disabled the most!)
But I agree, if you really dont want to root, your best option is to flash the old firmware.

No. U must need a computer to root the phone. By rooting it means that u gain privileges or access to the root system. Google your queries to get answers. there is lot of websites that explain what is "root in a linux system".
And our devs work hard to find a way to root the device and they do it out of passion and for free! they make the process simple and u should thank them for all their hard work, better u could offer a small donation.

Why root 2013 nexus 7?

Look I've been around xda for a long time and am not stranger to root, hacking modding whatever. But this is the first nexus device I've own so the newest android OS is not a problem at least for now. And to boot this little guy is a beast with wings! So even performance is no problem. And also I made sure to buy one long after the reports of touch screen problems so I don't have no issues. So without any insults and cyber bullying kindly give your take on the matter. What the benefits at this point?

That said, even if for some reason some device came perfect I would still root because I can.

Simple. To make it simpler and better!
Xposed Framework definitely fun to play around with. Opens your eyes on new possibilities without flashing different ROMs, if you're like me and like a specific ROM / stock.
Mainly to satisfy the tweaking itch. For me, it's compulsive on Android devices nowadays. Some of the big reasons include:
AFWall+
AdAway
Greenify
Nandroid backups
Custom ROMs
Custom kernels
OpenPDroid
Backup of SMS/MMS & apps
Xposed
With KitKat....apps monitoring the battery (gsam battery, betterbatterystat, etc) need root now
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
App ops is the reason I rooted. It disappeared with 4.4.2 and can only be retrieved with root now.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
I built on @locusto03's list:
AFWall+ (privacy, security)
AdAway (ad IP list blocker)
Greenify (memory optimization, performance, battery savings)
Nandroid backups
Custom ROMs
Custom kernels (allow you to over/under clock, etc according to your performance and battery preferences, network speed preferences, GPU preferences, etc. One of my favorite performance tweaks allows users to under-charge the battery slightly, thereby extending its lifetime).
OpenPDroid (privacy tweak)
Backup of SMS/MMS & apps
Xposed (unlocks a veritable smorgasbord of nifty interface enhancements, etc)
+ Xprivacy
+ PimpMyRom (many performance tuning enhancements)
+ Multiboot (ability to boot into distinctly different environments/roms - you could make your stock rom your main and install a custom rom, as well. Just read the about it 1st).
+ dSploit (pen testing)
+ WifiKill (look it up)
+ SecDroid (added security)
+ Ability to remove bloatware (Titanium Backup)

Rick
I felt the same way. I went nearly a week without even unlocking my bootloader, which is unheard of for me. I am now running PA with franco kernel and I don't notice much difference from stock, though the minor enhancements are worth it. I'm excited to play with other kernels to see how much battery life I can squeeze out of this thing.

Zedomax. It's an older hack, but if you go through the steps very carefully, one at a time, and be sure to follow the instructions on the video to a T then it's good. I just used it yesterday on a 2013 Nexus 7.
