Im looking for a permanent fix for the STOCK browser to have the UAsetting saved in desktop mode. If you do "about:useragent" you can pick desktop, but as soon as a new window opens or you close the browser, you have to do it again. Previously ive had roms that had the option in the menu and would save to whatever you changed it. Is there any Browser.apk that is fixed with a native setting in the menu?
I am running ACS ICS 5.5 with samurai 1.2.6 kernel.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Personally, I'd have to say the easiest option would be to download a different/better browser from the market. Dolphin, for example, will easily and permanently achieve what your asking. Open Dolphin, press the Menu soft button, go to More, go down to Settings, then under Dolphin Settings at the top, set User Agent (first option I believe) to whatever you want (desktop in your case here).
As for the stock browser, I don't think anyone has bothered to modify it yet, too many other browsers out there that do so much more with fewer issues. Guess it's just a preference, someone will probably get to it at some point but for now, I'd just go with a different browser.

Yea thats not really an option for me. i hate all the other browsers. there were modified ones from ec05 on the ACS roms, just hoping someone makes one for ie22.
Hello,
I've been a long time lurker and I finally flashed my first HTC Desire Z rom a few days ago.
The problem I've been having is that the user agent setting in all of my browsers don't work like they used to when I was still running stock Gingerbread (I'm running the latest G-Lite now).
I used to be able to get to any desktop site using Dolphin HD, and now I can't. But, Opera is still able to access the desktop version of ESPN.com. I know espn is one of those super picky sites regarding the user agent/mobile browser thing, but I used to be able to access the full site no problem. I've tried nearly every browser on the market (xScope, Skyfire, Boat Browser, Miren, stock browser about:debug thing, Firefox) and nothing works except Opera. I've played around with numerous user agent strings with no luck. What the hell is up with that?
Is it because of the super lightweight rom I chose? I know it's a minor problem, but I'd really love some help here. And, I really don't like Opera's bloatedness and Flash performance. Thanks!
Try maxthon browser. I find it's the best one out of them all. Should work fine.

Tried Maxthon. It's very nice and quick but it has the same problem as the others. What makes Opera so special over every other browser? I dunno, thanks anyway.
Hi everyone this is just a quick poll in regards to how your stock browser performs compared to Chrome (if you use it)
I'm not sure if this is just me or if everyone is experiencing this. I never really used the stock browser since right when I got my phone I installed Chrome, but lately its performance have been laggy on both my Transformer Prime and Galaxy Nexus..so I did a quick scrolling test.
1. browsed to www.engadget.com full desktop version
2. Wait for page to completely load
3. Scrolled up and down through the page.
I found Chrome even after the page was completely loaded continued to try the render images causing choppy scrolling while the stock was smooth.
Chrome belongs on the desktop, imo. Eye candy aside, it doesn't (imo) bring anything to the table, and is slower/fatter than stock.
I love stock not only cuz its smoother but it will open flawlessly any flash site lol..
Chrome looks good still need some work tho.. No flash support but hey keep in mind its still a beta..
So might get way better than stock or become a "safari like in apple" in the upcoming android versions
Galaxy Nexus AOKP m5 Franco kernel m3
Stock ftw.
...of the people, by the people, for the people...
I have noticed that the Chrome browser does seem to lag on the "heavy media" type sites...
Keep in mind though that it's based on the Google Chrome for Desktop code base, which in theory should be updated more frequently then the codebase for the stock browser...
Also, I believe it's been stated that it will never get Flash support (Officially...?)
Seems about the same to me. Admittedly I'm not a very heavy browser on my phone though. Few pages a day at most.
Chrome starts a bit slower but I find it's slightly faster going from one website to another. Stock browser remains the default as I want to keep Flash and full screen browsing.

Correct.
From Google: https://developers.google.com/chrome/mobile/docs/faq
From Adobe: http://blogs.adobe.com/flashplayer/2012/02/flash-chrome-for-android-beta.html
Chrome has lagged for me from day 1 since it released, while stock was always smooth. I've never understood all the people who see opposite. I just thought I lived in the twilight zone.
So your results are normal to me. Plus chrome runs a huge service that never closes and skews multitasking.
Plus stock has invert color option for all black web pages. And the quick controls on side of the screen. To me the stock browser pretty much destroys chrome in every way. I think chrome gets better html5 scores though.
I used to use the stock browser, but I recently switched over to Firefox Beta. Now, before you all say that Firefox is slow as hell, the current beta has a new UI that is actually pretty fast. Not as fast as stock is, but the fact that Firefox has addons more than makes up for that. Adblock Plus, and other addons are a must for me. Although I have AdAway to block ads globally, it does not get rid of the empty spaces inside webpages. Adblock Plus does this. I'm currently using FF as my main browser and stock as my backup browser.
I'm a big fan of Opera Mobile since WM6.1.
I like the start page with the thumbs/shortcuts. Stock doesn't have it.
I like that all the controls are at the bottom of the screen. Stock tab control is on the top which is not convenient to switch between tabs (and I'm using tabs a lot).
Go for Opera mobile!!
PS: I have no idea how slow/fast is Opera. Because I didn't compare it.
I have tried most of the browsers, they have beautiful features but they are not as fast as stock so i always return to stock after trying

Chrome has potential but it is a resource hog just like on the PC and double-tap zoom bugs out a lot, and doesn't even work at all on images.
Stock still wins, unless you need to download a large file... Opera handles that much better.

Chrome will never get flash because all new browsers are going to be using HTML5

I think they both have similar performance (minus one not having flash). But I think chrome does some things better than the stock browser.
It handles tabs much better vs stock without quick controls. It will also zoom in with a little popup window if you press on two links which are close together so you can select the right one. Also, when pinch zooming the browser doesn't wait until you lift your fingers to render the rest of the page.
Some people may also prefer the fact that the nav bar is persistent in chrome.

Why not use the quick control on stock browser? It has a real great tab control, just slide and hold. And the quick control appears on any part of the screen you want.
Ok, so Ive had a Galaxy S2 for nearly 6 months now... LOVE IT!
One of the first things that I did was root it, and it was worked flawlessly ever since. (Thanks to all the developers)
So yesterday, I was watching a video on my Laptop through my S2 Hotspot (I have a Tmobile Monthly 4G plan, Unlimited Data and Text with 100 Minutes) when suddenly the page redirected to the Tmobile Wifi hotspot upsell page.
So naturally, I did what any other Android fanboy would do, I rooted it further! (I installed the DarkSide ICS Rom for the S2, works really great)... But still, infortunately, the Tmovile Upsell Redirect page keeps coming up on the laptop, which is weird because the "tethering manager" app was removed through Titanium backup both before and after the upgrade, on both roots!
Im confused, how is this possible? How is Tmobile redirecting me if the Tethering Manager app is gone?
I even checked the APNs with APN manager... Nothing...
I used the LDE radio that the Developer said to use on his ROM page. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1623430
Anyone have any ideas? This is weird.
This only happens with chrome use firefox or ie.

OH MY GOD YOURE A GENIUS!
Opera works great!
Anyone know of a bypass or addon to change the browser identifier? Or maybe stop the phone from ever forwarding these browsers to begin with?
BTW I use Chrome.

I use chrome as well but i think tmobile is using chrome user agent strings to tell if your tethering. I honestly don't see the point in making me or anyone pay for it when your going to throttle me anyway. If chrome has something like firefox grease monkey scripts. You should be able to edit them. Look for an user agent extension. plenty in the chrome store.
Ok, Im using the User Agent switcher on Chrome, works great... I think I can live with it D:
THANKS! Its beautiful ;,]
Still, would be nice to know if theres a more general solution, like Android side of things instead of PC side... So maybe others could use the Wifi without having to switch User Agents?
Any thoughts?
But yea, this fix is perfect, thank you!
Not sure since t-mobile is blocking user agent strings through actual browser. There might be i haven't explored it really. Off the top of my head would be use a vpn. Since all packets of data are hidden and encrypted. I know android you can has plenty of vpn solutions. As for an app there is one i know that wont be detected. clockwork tether. but you need to be connected usb.
Really to be the negative nancy here...
I have been using TMO for years, and never had a tethering warning. I use tethering as a supplement when I"m on the road. Which is sparingly for specific tasks.
Now the OP may not be, but all you * that use the tether function constantly to use as a primary ISP is the reason TMO has become more anal about the mobile data. /soapbox
Keep that in mind when you see posts when you see a "I'm getting the TMO block prompt" posts.

Freeze every service that includes tether with Ti Backup, works like a charm after that for me. There are 3.
Yeah, they have a bunch of sneaky crap in the ROM that looks for the Wifi module in infrastructure mode, and if it finds it either (1) shuts it off or (2) notifies the head-end you're attached to, and then you get the famous upsell screen.
If you've got an ENTIRELY custom ROM (not a cooking job, but an actual BUILD) then those bits are not in there, but if you're running stock or something cooked from stock, they ARE in there.
T-Mobile ALSO looks for your browser user agent and will trip on that too. Firefox has the ability to run a custom user agent and you can stick a string in there that looks like an Android phone. Of course then sites on the net will serve their "mobile" versions, which may not be what you want.

What about a stock AOSP ROM (I have a Galaxy Nexus). There shouldn't be any of that crap from Google, right, just on a TMo-built ROM? Of course, that doesn't help with user-agent sniffing if I'm on TMo's network even if I don't have one of their phones/ROMs.

You can shut off the crap in their stock ROM but it won't help you with the agent-sniffing.....
So as the title says : do you prefer using Stock Browser or Chrome , and why ?
Thanks folx
Stock, why pop-up
I like the stock one so far
I really like lots of things about Chrome and much prefer the way it handles tabs over the stock browser - it's so slow changing between tabs on the built in one - but the performance of the stock is just so much better that I can't use Chrome. Is it the same for everyone? Scrolling in Chrome is just so stutter and choppy, especially noticeable when going slowly.
Stock- Of course. Always, browsing heavy sites, reading and all.
Chrome- Never (other than when I want to show off that pesky tab sliding view, but I don't show off)
Opera- For downloading.
Period.
Don't forget that flash works with the stock browser but not Chrome, also now I have adjusted Framework, the stock browser defaults to desktop view instead of having to tick that damn box everytime you open a new tab!
Well, like most others, I've obviously noticed the better speed in the stock browser, so it's always a temptation.
However, apparently unlike most of the others who've replied, I spend 90% of my browsing time in Chrome, due to the exceptionally useful (for me) integration between Chrome on my (two) Android devices (Nexus 7 tablet, Galaxy Note 2 smartphone) and my two laptops. The fact that my bookmarks are kept in perfect, almost instant synchronization between these devices, as well as the extremely useful feature to open any tab on one device instantly on another one, are just too useful to pass up. If I run into a web page that is just too unresponsive to use in Chrome, I will sometimes go ahead an open in in the stock browser. I wish there was an add-in or something in Chrome to allow you to choose another browser to open the current page in.
Anyway, now that Google is shipping Chrome as the default browser on JB, I'm hopeful that they will continue to improve its rendering speed and responsiveness.
Only thing i hate about stock browser is slow tab management.. and im a heavy tab user.. thats the only thing that irritates me with stock browser...
Handwritten from my Note 2
Chrome here because I can sync with all my desktop bookmarks.
stock, used to it and flash support
I prefer chromes interface but rarely use
My favorite browser is the stock AOSP browser. I really wish we could have that browser on stock firmware.

Prefer stock on my phone, but only use crome on pc.
Because stock support flash.
Just cause i have to be different.....Id pick Dolphin over both. Really good gesture control
I always try Chrome but I always revert back to the stock browser. Because of flash support and the pop-up feature. I hate the fact that flash is not supported in chrome. I think it should be until HTML5 really does replace flash. in the meantime stock broswer for the win.
Although I do prefer the way Chrome handles tabs.
only stock, why?
full screen
flash
a lot of smoother
also can import bookmarks from pc chrome (syncing gmail acc internet bookmarks)
save page for offline view
Boat browser ...shores up the shortcomings of both...
I'm currently on opera mobile due to one feature call the text wrapping. and stock browser, aosp browser doesn't seem to work properly even when enabled. anyone has recommendation of other browsers that has text wrapping working beside opera mobile?
What is that desktop default mod?
