Rooted and Wifi Hotspot was fine... Then suddenly... POW! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Ok, so Ive had a Galaxy S2 for nearly 6 months now... LOVE IT!
One of the first things that I did was root it, and it was worked flawlessly ever since. (Thanks to all the developers)
So yesterday, I was watching a video on my Laptop through my S2 Hotspot (I have a Tmobile Monthly 4G plan, Unlimited Data and Text with 100 Minutes) when suddenly the page redirected to the Tmobile Wifi hotspot upsell page.
So naturally, I did what any other Android fanboy would do, I rooted it further! (I installed the DarkSide ICS Rom for the S2, works really great)... But still, infortunately, the Tmovile Upsell Redirect page keeps coming up on the laptop, which is weird because the "tethering manager" app was removed through Titanium backup both before and after the upgrade, on both roots!
Im confused, how is this possible? How is Tmobile redirecting me if the Tethering Manager app is gone?
I even checked the APNs with APN manager... Nothing...
I used the LDE radio that the Developer said to use on his ROM page. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1623430
Anyone have any ideas? This is weird.

This only happens with chrome use firefox or ie.

OH MY GOD YOURE A GENIUS!
Opera works great!
Anyone know of a bypass or addon to change the browser identifier? Or maybe stop the phone from ever forwarding these browsers to begin with?
BTW I use Chrome.

I use chrome as well but i think tmobile is using chrome user agent strings to tell if your tethering. I honestly don't see the point in making me or anyone pay for it when your going to throttle me anyway. If chrome has something like firefox grease monkey scripts. You should be able to edit them. Look for an user agent extension. plenty in the chrome store.

Ok, Im using the User Agent switcher on Chrome, works great... I think I can live with it D:
THANKS! Its beautiful ;,]
Still, would be nice to know if theres a more general solution, like Android side of things instead of PC side... So maybe others could use the Wifi without having to switch User Agents?
Any thoughts?
But yea, this fix is perfect, thank you!

Not sure since t-mobile is blocking user agent strings through actual browser. There might be i haven't explored it really. Off the top of my head would be use a vpn. Since all packets of data are hidden and encrypted. I know android you can has plenty of vpn solutions. As for an app there is one i know that wont be detected. clockwork tether. but you need to be connected usb.

Really to be the negative nancy here...
I have been using TMO for years, and never had a tethering warning. I use tethering as a supplement when I"m on the road. Which is sparingly for specific tasks.
Now the OP may not be, but all you * that use the tether function constantly to use as a primary ISP is the reason TMO has become more anal about the mobile data. /soapbox
Keep that in mind when you see posts when you see a "I'm getting the TMO block prompt" posts.

Freeze every service that includes tether with Ti Backup, works like a charm after that for me. There are 3.

Yeah, they have a bunch of sneaky crap in the ROM that looks for the Wifi module in infrastructure mode, and if it finds it either (1) shuts it off or (2) notifies the head-end you're attached to, and then you get the famous upsell screen.
If you've got an ENTIRELY custom ROM (not a cooking job, but an actual BUILD) then those bits are not in there, but if you're running stock or something cooked from stock, they ARE in there.
T-Mobile ALSO looks for your browser user agent and will trip on that too. Firefox has the ability to run a custom user agent and you can stick a string in there that looks like an Android phone. Of course then sites on the net will serve their "mobile" versions, which may not be what you want.

What about a stock AOSP ROM (I have a Galaxy Nexus). There shouldn't be any of that crap from Google, right, just on a TMo-built ROM? Of course, that doesn't help with user-agent sniffing if I'm on TMo's network even if I don't have one of their phones/ROMs.

Facebook S! Slow as hell & often "network connection error"

I really like the UI of Samsungs Facebook S! App over the web interface as well as the non Samung alternative.
Unfortunately I have been having problems loading the pages, as it takes very, very long or even fails completely due to a "network connection error" although I have HSDPA connection.
Am I the only one with this problem or do others share my demise?
BTW: The app is downloadable through the "Samsung Apps" app
Same. I kept getting network error but when I checked, the content was already successfully posted
Same here dude...even on my home wifi..i get this msg...had to stop using it...

for this reason i stopped using it, instead i'm using facebook from the market.
at least it has "Like" function. and fast.
This thing works on wifi only, too bad as it's a lot better than the facebook app from the marketplace.

I prefer the marketplace "Facebook for Android" - for some reason the Samsung one just bombards me with billions of f%&$£*% Farmville etc. updates, even though I've hidden them on the main site. If I ever find out how to get rid of the damn things on the Samsung one, I might try it again - I did prefer the look of it tbh.
Same problem on my side ...
The samsung app is slow and often doens't manage to connect to netword ( 3G or wifi)
I must confess that when you come from the iphone both application are pretty crap in comparison
But it is still much better that what I have on my wm6.5 phone
Guys, I recently flash a JG5 ROM, and Facebook S is not in the Samsung App is not in, Anyone know how to download this? I need this to sync my Facebook contact.
You don't want the samsung facebook app.
yeah same problem. Sometimes its fast most of the time its loads forever (i think its has lost connection)
Just have to wait for an update
Like the look of it though

All the FB apps on the Android are pants but then FB itself is one of the worst software implementations I have ever come across, both from a coding and from a user experience perspective. The Iphone app is the best do far but it's still pretty pants and I suspect that is down to really sloppy APIs.

Maybe i have setting problems. It works fast when i am on hsdpa but when i am on wifi i cant connect to facebook s! , it has the loading spinning thing and after 4 min wait nothing. The standard android facebook works on wifi.
If anyone knows the answer to no connection via wifi please help. I rather use this app.

what web browser to use

what web browser is everyone using the stock one on the g2 has a problem that i just noticed if you clear the history you lose all your book marks or is there a way to stop that?
I just re-discover Dolphin HD browser. I bought it about a year ago then Opera came out and I switched to it. I tried Fennec, but it's very slow right now to me. I'm really liking Dolphin HD!
Xscope is a great alternative. Much faster than the default browser, and instant page back/forward (like opera)

Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I've been using the Dolphin HD browser. I like having tabbed browsing for my browsing experience.
I have tried basically every browser out there and always come back to stock.
Dolphin is too busy for me. I hate that I can't scroll all the way to the right or left without the stupid bars popping up. The add ons are kind of cool but nothing I can't live without.
Opera was great before my city got 3G but now its just kind of blah. I like pictures and it scales the pictures all weird.
Skyfire was great before we got flash. Its way too buggy and crashed too much for a daily driver.
Fenac (Mozilla) is a great concept but just sucks. Its slow, scales images like Opera but without the speed boost. I really hope they fix it because syncing my tabs with my home pc would be awesome.
And then there is stock. Its not flashy, doesn't try to do anything special, it just works.

I had exactly the same thought process. The stock browser really is the best option.
I normally use the stock browser but I use Dolphin HD on occassions where I want to render pages in desktop mode. As far as I know of the stock android browser does not offer this feature.

Possibly buy why would you want to? Flash will slow your browsing experience down and also drain your battery faster. All of us Android guys know about conserving battery wherever possible.
Or are you trying to watch a site with a ton of...well...videos on your phone? Some of them of an adult nature? If so, they just allow it under the website settings and share which page it is. Everyone I go to hijacks me to brazzermobile and sucks.
And yeah...after my rant in favor of stock browser, I downloaded Dolphin to give it another try. Its not that bad once you disable the stupid righ/left option windows.
I don't understand why Google can't make Chrome integrate with their stock browser better. Why Google...why????
Speaking of those site lol. Is their any way to view the actual desktop version of a website without viewing the mobile version. I went into the settings on the Dolphin Hd browser and set it up in desktop mode, but when I go to the site it takes me to the mobile version not the desktop version. I havent tried about:debug and adjust the settings on the stock browser yet, does anyone know if this works?

The website knows that you are on an Android phone. With non-stock ROM's, you could have it spoof as something different. Stock we aren't that lucky.
Stock FTW. It is basically chrome-lite. Not flashy, doesn't do all kinds of crazy, but its fast and simply works. No need for another browser now that we have flash.

[Q] Looking for a fast aftermarket browser for evo/flash...

Is there an aftermarket browser that works very well with the evo and flash?
not really, most have issues with macromedia, adobe shouldnt be a problem, I use firefox but it still has pinch to zoom issues, I keep it because no other downloads as well, I've lost signal for 10 minutes on a mediafire download and it resumed while others would have dropped it

it just seems that the stock browser is slow. skyfire sucked on my hero and i didnt need or want all the social options integrated within it, in fact, the only browser that i ever used was opera mini. I dont NEED flash but its nice to have the option.
guess im just seeking something faster. thank you
perhaps a better question could be: which browsers actually support flash? thank you thank you
Dolphin is great in my opinion. Plus it gives you the option to run flash on the page instead of automatically running it. This saves on page load time.

I take it, then, that they've added Flash support to Opera for Android. When I first got my Evo (last fall) I tried it and it didn't work. I settled on Skyfire. One thing to understand about it is that it is not a raw browsing experience. The page is pulled through their proxy servers which "process" it and deliver the content to your phone. One of the cool options is to view in-page videos through the proxy which optimizes them on-the-fly for mobile devices. I've even watched streaming live sports that way and it works great.

now this is something I do know about - that of which you speak is Opera Mini - that does proxy websites - I am not using that - I am using Opera Mobile (two different Opera's - they make 2 kinds of mobile browsers (mini has always been free - mobile used to cost but I didn't have to pay so it seems to be free now to)
Opera Mobile is a full browser and operates as the desktop version would with no proxy servers involved in reconfiguring the websites then forwarding them - it just pulls the data straight to the device

Okay, so I made the jump from iPhone 4S to SGS3 T-999 at the beginning of September this year and my experience has been less than fun. Disregarding all the hardware issues, as far as software is concerned, I've been spending hours every day trying to find software that works reliably. Here's my rant of the biggest problems right now, if you have any ideas, I'd really appreciate hearing back! I was looking forward to digging into mods/hacks, etc on Android later down the road but with these basic functions that I depend on daily in my phone not there yet, I'm starting to wonder if I need to just switch back to iOS until Android is more developed. I actually used be on Android in the days of the S2 for about 2 months, but had to ultimately switch back to iOS because I simply didn't always have the time to download 20-30 clock apps to find one that works decently or test out mods and hacks for basic functions. Sure, it's fun to test try out mods and such but when your phone feels like it's broken, that's no good.
>Stock camera app doesn't allow taking pictures/video/flash at a certain level of battery. wtf, why samsung?! I have yet to find a camera app that does video/photo as well as the stock camera app.
>Image compression & resize tool for when e-mailing photos/images quickly...like in iOS would be great, or even something that actually works would be better. Note to Samsung--most people don't want or need to get an e-mail of your 8mp picture taken on your cell phone.
>Audiobook player that saves my spot
>Least buggy PDF reader with search, annotations and highlighting
>Tethering that works (no luck so far with fox fi and a few others, I'm using T-mobile MyMonthly 4G)
>File transfer over USB on my Mac (Latest version of lion, macbook pro 2.4ghz c2d pre-unibody)
>Find my iPhone equivalent with a web interface as opposed to just text message operation
>iOS clock app equivalent. I have downloaded probably more than 2 dozen timer/clock/alarm apps and none of them do it all while staying on in the background and not randomly closing. Also would be great if I didn't lose my timer if the app or phone has to be restarted/killed.
>Make a complete backup on my Mac instead of backing it up to my SD card and then having to copy that to my computer.
This list used be a lot longer...but with much sweat I have found some solutions or learned to cope, but not for everything that is vital^...

I don't understand what "basic" functions you are having issues with? Other than the camera not working after a certain %, it's not like a PDF reader with annotations and highlighting is a "basic" function.. nor are rely any of the other things on your list except maybe image compression.
That being said, I don't know a camera solution for Touchwiz but on AOSP there are no restrictions to when you can take a picture with regards to battery.
Repligo Reader is a great PDF reader. I don't know about search but I can highlight and annotate.
You need to download the app Android File Transfer to transfer via USB on your Mac.
If you're in Monthly4G, tethering is not included. This is an issue with your plan. If you want to tether, root your phone.
There are plenty of "find my android" apps out there, that work exceptionally well. I use Avast!.
AOSP also has a timer and stopwatch built in, so maybe you should try that.
You cannot backup your phone directly to your computer.
I am more than happy to help you, as I am sure most people here are, but I think you need to lower your expectations on "basic" features..

Yeah, I spent several hours trying to trouble shoot this and just decided it would be easier to use vmware and try to dig up a copy of windows xp i had lying around...ugh..
joshnichols189: Thank you for your help!
By basic, I guess I wasn't necessarily referring to all stock functions...but on the iPhone I found many apps on the App store that accomplished this task competently. Primarily I used Good reader, but there were others so it seemed like something that wouldn't be difficult to come across. I have found a few apps that provide such a function but end up missing others or are too buggy to use. I will have to check which apps specifically I tried with no success if that will help...will look into Repligo Reader, thanks!
As for tethering: I was able to get it to work on an S2 (i9100) running gingerbread using my MyMonthly4G plan using the native tethering feature. I've rooted my phone sucessfully but haven't gotten around looking into custom roms and such..still using stock (but rooted). If you or anyone here knows any especially good tethering solutions for rooted t-999 users running stock it'd be super helpful to hear.
I will have to do research on AOSP.

Be sure to try Repligo, I believe they have a free/lite version! I wasn't able to tether when I was on Monthly4G so maybe it is different now. If you are rooted you should look at the WiFi Tether for Root app. I believe you can find it easily with a Google search. Also be sure to look into AOSP, you might like it more but if not you can always revert!

Theres a full office suite on sale for .25 that may take care of your pdfs and then some. OfficeSuite pro.
For file transfers, you can use SGS3 Easy UMS. It only works for external sdcard though. Many people have been trying to do the same for internal but no luck yet as far as I know. Search for it on xda.
Also on file transfering, have you looked at a wireless transfer solution? I use SwiFTP and love it. Gives me access to the entire file system on my phone, including /system.
There are quite a few find my phone types like youre looking for that get good reviews. Check cerebrus. Haven't used it on this phone but liked it in the past.
My favorite alarm clock app is Alarm Clock Plus. Been using it for a few years now. No stopwatch or timer but hoping the dev adds em in the future.
For the backup, are you talking about a nandroid type backup or apps and data? Nandroid, no backing up straight to computer. Im pretty sure there are apps thatll backup your data and apps like that though. Never used any though. (And theres always adb!)
Tip: when people see a thread with this many questions and youre not experiencing a critical problem, it can look a bit overwhelming and seems like you may be demanding answers without really looking for them yourself. (Not saying thats your case and not trying to be an ass). Additionally at first read/glance it looks like it could be a lot of work to help you for what many might consider to be simple problems. In the future dont wait so long and ask everything at once. Ask your questions as they come and you cant find the answers yourself.
I saw your thread when it was first posted but didnt reply because I knew it would take much longer than I could spend at that moment.
One last thing, if people perceive you to be threatening to leave for the iphone if you dont get what you want, you are much less likely to find help now or in the future.
Like I said, im not trying to be an ass or belittle or anything like that. Just telling you what some (many?) people may think when they just glance over your thread.
Sorry for the little rant, but I am trying to help you.
Btw, if you're having such bad hw issues you may have a defective device. Majority of people have no problems.
Good luck!

[Q] Is there a good browser?

Stock browser: defaults to those useless mobile versions of websites for iphone 3 users or something, no integration with apps, bad flash support
Dolphin: tab functionality completely gone with updates, text doesn't wrap (with it enabled or not)
Firefox: no hyperlink support. Links do not work.
Opera: no text wrap, and it assumes my screen resolution is really small because
it
stacks
text
like
this
on
every
page.
Dolphin still the best choice, and there is no such thing as Textwrap anymore.

Honestly Dolphin is still the best. It does have the tabs. Im not sure if you are using an older version but the newer version does. , Text doesn't wrap on any browser with the Epic 4g Touch since ICS came out. ICS broke the text wrap. Im not sure if it is completely an ICS problem or a Crapple lawsuit problem. It does have flash support, and I have found that downloading Adobe Air from the market helps where it falls through the cracks once in a while. It also has the hyperlink and My personal favorite, a customizable start page. :good:

Stock jelly bean seems the best for me
+1 for the stock Chrome browser in Jellybean.
As far as the mobile versions of websites go, that's generally not up to the browser to decide (i.e. it is the website that is determining you are on a phone and pushing you to the mobile version).
I just got this phone yesterday, i am still using stock browser for now.
TY for the info on text wrap.
I've fallen back to Firefox, a new update has links working. The pages load badly though, as if the video processing is messed up. It appears in giant square chunks, not text then images. It is still much faster than the stock browser which waits a minute before it starts loading any site.
But I can't get them to work in Dolphin. If I click on a link, it makes the click noise and nothing happens. If I long-press, it brings up the menu of choices. But if I click an option, the menu just closes. I've reinstalled it a bunch of times, hoping an update has fixed it. It's pretty annoying. The only way I've figured out to get links to work is to long press the link for 5 seconds, then the menu pops up, wait 5-10 seconds or just put the phone down for a while, then long press for 5 seconds. That's 50/50.
My phone is dead stock. I haven't rooted because I moved to Phoenix, AZ and this is the land that Sprint forgot. There was no point in tethering, because there was no 3G or 4G in Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Apache Junction, Tempe, or Phoenix. I just complained to Sprint in hopes of getting to break my contract and they had me update my phone's ID, and I now actually get some data. I'm beginning to think the only fix to all the things that break is rooting. The ICS push broke half the functionality of my phone. I used to use this thing constantly.

Chrome is my goto. Synchs bookmarks seamlessly with my laptop, and is quite fast.

I've been using boat browser and I like it. It's sort of stock browser-ish but has working word-wrap when using pinch to zoom.
If on JB ROM, then Chrome. If on ICS or GB Rom, then ICS Browser+ (loved it and got paid version).

Naked browser is so fast, dependable, and smooth.....now it doesn't look like other browsers hint the name naked but that's why is faster and smoother than other browsers
