flashing ICS... hold down capacitive back button? - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

I understand how to flash a device as I've flashed the X10 a couple of times before but
I don't get how you are supposed to hold down the capacitive back button while flashing??
Like, I try it and it doesn't work...
Im trying to flash the ICS l28h firmware

U probably arent hitting the back button just rite. Try this method. Slide your finger up from the bottom of the phone across the white line and onto the button. Like a gesture swipe. Only stop and hold on the back button. Should work better. Hope that helps. Again I haven't actually flashed my ion yet so im unaware of the current procedure

Thank you, both of you

Flashing Ion
Vol down = flashmode
Vol up = fastboot mode (Works oonly with unlocked bootloader and .img)
Vol down is the one you want to use for the flashtool and ICS firmware.

random, what is fast boot mode?

Fastboot
It's a flash tool that allows you to flash .img files to individual partitions.

My memory fails me, once the flashing is over should I disconnect my phone and reboot, or wait for it to do it by itself... its been sitting there for awhile. I tried to press the power putton a few times and it didnt work

if it says flashing complete just unplug and power on nomally

To enter flashmode, you need to hold the Back button. For kernel installation via fastboot, you need to hold Menu button.
OP hasn't written, if he is attempting to flash firmware or install custom kernel in Flashtool.

There is easier way :
1.Turn off phone by long hold power button + volume up
2.Download Sony Updater Service program from http://software.sonymobile.com/emma/install_packs/Update_Service_Setup-2.13.4.20.exe
3. Install program and follow instructions.
Good luck

[Q] Xperia Arc S Lt18 died after flash boot.img

Hey buddies,
I have a big issue:
My Xperia arc S is rooted, I did the bootloader unlock with sucess, and, when I flashed the boot.img (I had sucess by ADB), after ask to "fastboot reboot' my device died :/
It can't be recognized anywhere (USB-PC, wall charger, vol up + usb but it doesn't enter in fastboot mode), it doesn't turn on anymore.. When I hold "power button + vol up + vol down + camera button it's vibrate, but nothing happened in display. I had just this feedback.
Any ideas?
Thank you!
Try using flashtool. Hold down "menu" key and plug your phone into the usb. You will get into fastboot mode and then flash custom kernel.
After flashing kernel get into CWM recovery. Once you get in there its easy to install the ROM you want.
Make sure you flash kernel according to the ROM you selected or else you will get bootloop.
CHEERS!!
same issue

No, you don't need to press power button.
Switch off your device(which is already in your case) then while holding down the "menu" button on your phone, plug the phone into your computer via USB cable. If blue LED lights up, means you have successfully placed your phone in fastboot mode.
If its not working then probably your device battery is empty. You will need to charge it bro. And this might be a big problem unless you have got one more arc/arc s.
Sounds like the chargemon has been corupted of wiped! That could explain the charging issue. Try vol down & plug in usb for flash mode(green led if good) connect to pc companion and repair phone, or flashtool and the rom of your choice. If not it may be a jtag job im afraid n thats pricey!!!

How to factory reset using hardware buttons if not able to boot up?

Hi, I'd appreciate someone can help me. :fingers-crossed:
I have an AT&T Sony Xperia Ion that is not able to boot-up for some reason. It's been stuck in the Sony boot-up animation ever since I powered it down yesterday. The phone is rooted and the bootloader is locked. It has a Generic Jelly Bean 4.1.2 ROM.
Can anyone help me perform a factory reset using the hardware buttons, through a fastboot setting, or if not possible, then how do I get the phone to delete all its data and start fresh?
I really would appreciate your help! Thank you!
it'll be corrupted data somewhere if its done it for no reason. so you'll have to flash the firmware again with flashtool wiping data and cache etc in the top right tick boxes

Hi Ben, do you know how will my phone be recognized by the computer if it's in a boot-loop? Is there a specific pattern I have to follow in order to have it set up for flashtool?
Thank you!
Ahem...first hit. And in a most unexpected place
Once it's powered off, you can flash a clean ftf using Flashtool. Flashtool will tell you to hold down the "back" button as you plug in the USB cable. Since the Ion's "back" button is a capacitive button, that won't achieve anything. On the Ion you need to hold down the "volume down" key instead.

Hey, thanks for the info, but I didn't really ask how to power it off. I've already done that. I wanted to do a factory reset and couldn't find any button combination to do so.
Thanks for the flashtool information. I will try it tonight and let you know how it goes.
you can just use flashtool to wipe data i guess. but there's no button combination that I've heard to do so

That is a method proven to not work on countless occasions. All that combo does is restart the phone; by no means does it reset anything. After the phone vibrates three times, the phone will either stay off or boot normally.

Power + Volume up (1 vibration) = Restart
Power + Volume up, held for some time(3 vibrations)=Shutdown
@bbonline - So after doing the latter, you can easily connect your phone in flash mode (green led)

Yes, and that's how you perform a factory reset on the Sony Xperia Ion if you've forgotten the pattern lock screen. You need to install something called "Flashtool". This program has the option to wipe data and cache when you flash the firmware. I used this method last night to successfully perform a factory data reset on the Xperia Ion.

Totally bricked [SOLVED]

OK guys so I got my xperia zl today, updated to 4.3 (.569), unlocked the boot loader, then tried flashing a CWM, now the phone is utterly and totally bricked, I tried the volume buttons + power button trick nothing, won't turn on at all, no fastboot, no flashmode, pc companion wont recognize it, the only thing I can get out of it is a single vibrate if I hold down the reset button at the back but even after that I get nothing, at all, the only thing that does anything is holding the reset button, any help would be greatly appreciated and if one of you magnificent people can get my phone working again I will send you money through paypal as a thank you,

This phone doesnt have any Volume +/- power button trick. It ONLY has the yellow reset button. Its a pain in the A*S!
Try a few things first.
1) When you hold down the yellow reset button, are you ONLY holding it down for a few seconds, and it vibrates ONCE?
Have you tried holding it down for 10 seconds, until it vibrates TWICE, indicating it has powered off completely, and THEN try connecting it?
2) If step 1 got your phone to power off completely try:
-Connecting your phone to your PC via USB with the volume DOWN button held and see if you get a GREEN L.E.D. If you do you have
successfully entered flash mode, in which case you can simply flash an FTF file with flashtool.
-Connecting your phone to your PC via USB with the volume UP button held and see if you get a BLUE L.E.D. If you do you have
successfully entered fastboot. From here, as long as you have ADB and your devices drivers installed on your computer, you can flash
a boot.img or "Kernel" with a fastboot command in a command window (fastboot flash boot boot.img). The easiest way to get a kernel or
boot.img with a baked in recovery is to download the latest Cyanogenmod, unzip and extract the boot.img, and flash it via fastboot.
Since you have an unlocked bootloader already, your device should be able to use an AOSP kernel.
From there you should be able to at least boot into recovery, and flash something from your SD card.
Id recommend just flashing the latest Cyanogenmod just to get your device up and running. From there you should be able to follow steps
get back to stock if thats what your looking for.
I hope at least one of these options work.
If not, like that last guy said, take it to a service center and get it checked out.
GOOOOD LUUUUCK!!

All ZL's are like that. Hold down till 1 vibration for reboot. Hold down till 3 vibrations for power off. The yellow reset button will not power on the device however. I figured I'd check just incase my power button decided to go for a sh*t.
