I just got my replacement(after a hard brick trying JB) and I've got a few questions before I brick this one too:
1. Ive decided to odin EL29 EVERY TIME I want to flash a new rom, just to be safe. If I use CMW with EL29 and decide to try out CM9, Do I always need to flash a aokp kernel? Or is that built into the CM9 install?
2. If I like CM9, and want to make a nandroid backup of it, do I need to Odin back to EL29 first to back it up? Or is it safe to do it with the recovery that comes with CM9?
3. If the answer to #2 is yes, meaning I do have to odin back to EL29, how do I restore my backup? Let me explain:Lets say I flash CM9, make a nandroid of CM9, then decide to try out say a different rom, like a TW rom. Then I hate the TW rom and wanna restore my backup of CM9. Do I need to ODIN back to EL29 to restore the nandroid? I read in the "how not to brick my..." thread its bad to restore a ICS rom from a GB Kernel. Can someone please explain?
Ive really, really tried to search and read as much as possible before asking, but a lot of the threads are old and have contradicting information. Sorry for being so noobish but I dont wanna brick my new phone. I come from Evo, Evo3d, Hp Touchpad, etc, where there arent as many issues to flash customs roms. Ive rooted and flashed custom roms ever since the PPC6600, 100's of times and NEVER had a problem. Sorry, this just really confuses me for some reason!!!
You really don't need to Odin back to el29 but if you wanna play it safe and not brick just Odin the el26 kernel and flash from there thats all you can flash from internal and from external, I don't have anything against other devs ics kernel but I just like to keep it safe even if I'm on a jb from I use the kernel that's on that jb kernel to flash the el26 reboot recovery and start flashing or restoring backups I do use the ics or jb kernels to flash but not to flash roms.

A kernel is already included with CM9, so there's no need to flash anything else. However, if you'd like to use one of chris41g's custom kernels like RC10-CWM6 or RC11-TWRP, you're welcome to flash them during your ROM flash session or after the fact.

It's always safe to make a Nandroid backup, regardless of the kernel/recovery on your phone. Where a problem could potentially arise is on a Nandroid restore, because the restore function formats the EMMC. However, it should be perfectly safe to restore a Nandroid backup using the kernel/recovery included with CM9. The bottom line is, you want to make sure that if the kernel/recovery on your phone that your using to restore the backup is based on ICS, that it's been properly patched for EMMC lock safety.

If you want to be extra careful, and only use a GB based kernel/recovery like EL26 to restore your Nandroid backups, you would Mobile Odin the EL26 kernel+CWM, hold down the power button or pull the battery on the reboot, then boot into that recovery and restore your backup. Whatever kernel/recovery was in your backup will overwrite the EL26 kernel and that will be the new kernel/recovery on your phone when you reboot.
Thanks for the quick responses. Still kinda confused.
Do I have to use mobile Odin for what you explained in #3? And is mobile Odin as safe as pc Odin?
And, would it be safe to have the el26 kernel on my card and just flash that(with recovery, not odin) everytime I wanna do any flashing/wiping?
I feel so stupid!! Maybe someone could write down THEIR step by step "safe" procedure on flashing/wiping a new rom and backing up/restoring, and ill just follow that.
Here's the step by step safe method
1: get mobile Odin or mobile Odin pro
2: download the flash kernel from mobile Odin pro
2a: if using mobile Odin download the flash kernel for sph-d710 from chainfires mobile Odin thread
3: download el26+cwm kernel.tar to your PC
4: copy kernel to SD card and keep a copy on your PC in case of an oh sh!t moment
5: download a cm9 compatible kernel.zip(you will need this in recovery)
6: backup mobile Odin and it's data in titanium backup or similar app
7: open mobile Odin and choose the el26+cwm kernel.tar
8: flash kernel.tar with flash firmware option in mobile Odin
9: when the device reboots hold vol+ and power til you boot to recovery(or pull battery then boot to recovery)
10: flash cm9 kernel.zip in recovery
11: make nandroid backup
12: reboot to cm9
12a: if you forgot to flash the cm9 kernel before making the nandroid flash it now to boot cm9
12b: if kernel wasn't flashed before making nandroid, when u restore the nandroid flash the kernel before rebooting.
13: profit!
These steps work for any rom 4.0.3 and above with very minimal chance of bricking, since el26+cwm is considered immune to the brick bug

I think it's been proven via user experience that Mobile Odin is a safe as PC Odin. In fact, one could make the argument that its safer, as there's no way to kick out the cord during a flash, or stick the wrong file in the wrong slot. The only negative to it is it will not flash modem files on CDMA devices like ours.
Mobile Odin is generally preferred to temp flash a GB kernel because 1) it's easier and 2) it doesn't trigger the yellow triangle or increase the Odin flash count like PC Odin does when you flash a kernel that has not been signed by Samsung. So while being easier, MO makes life even easier by not having to fix those two issues later.
So with that said, yes it's a good idea to keep the EL26+CWM5.zip file on your sd card at all times. Mine is always there, hanging out and drinking beers with Calkulin's Format All zip.

Awesome man, thanks so much for clarifying!
So from here on out, if want to flash ANY other rom, aosp or TW, I'd:
Follow steps 7-9, then wipe(data, cache, dalvik) then flash the rom right?
And if I'm NOT making a nandroid backup, skip 10-12?
Also, should steps 7-9 be repeated if I'm restoring a backup?
I mobile odin the el26 kernel for testing the Jelly Bean roms but since I have not been returning to stock and only going between CM9 Nightlies I have been doing it from CWM 1 or more times a day. CM9 alpha 6 has a safe recovery and all the of the nightlies as well. There was a couple of mismerged versions of Chris41G's kernel that were safe to wipe from but unsafe to flash unsafe roms from.
CM9 Alpha 5 for example has an unsafe updater binary while Alpha 6 does not, I would never flash Alpha 5 from an ICS kernel unless that kernel is one that replaces updater binaries for flashing.
When in doubt EL26 CWM. The rest of the time just use a safe kernel and a known safe rom.

You will still need to flash an ics kernel in cwm to get it to boot after flashing el26 to use recovery unless you are freshly installing a rom cuz it will include a kernel in the rom zip. I just mOdin el26+cwm anytime I need to use recovery. But yeah you have to steps right. If you ever end up in a boot loop having the el26 tar on your PC is your go to to get back into recovery when you can't boot android to use mOdin

OK, think I'm getting a handle on all of this now. Will it ever get to a point where its just safe all the time to flash roms? It'd be cool if someone came up with an app that could scan the .zips to make sure they're safe. Or, why don't devs just always use .tar files to flash through Odin instead of zips through recovery? OR Is it a big pain to make .tar files?
P.s. I hope that didn't sound at all condescending to any of the wonderful devs. I'm just curious and obviously new to Samsung, and they're flashing procedures.
They do have tars available you have to flash them threw PC Odin. Zips are usually safe & handy on the go when your away from the computer with CWM & M. Odin just flash & go! Options are always good...

The emmc bug is a Samsung issue and, while trigged by the emmc_cap_erase code in ICS kernels during wipes, is actually located in the firmware for the emmc controller itself. As such its not likely we'll ever have a true "fix" for it as it would require Samsung to 1. Directly admit fault... and 2. Somehow patch the affected firmware... What we have now are basically known-good workarounds, essentially the "safe" kernels have the code that triggers the bug removed. These are more than sufficient, and a huge thanks to the kernel devs who've made ICS flashing possible and to sfhub/entropy512/garwynn and others who did the research on the emmc bug and figured out how it was triggered...
So that said the rom you are flashing shouldn't have a whole hell of a lot to do with whether it is safe or now, all that matters is how the kernel you are on handles the wipe when flashing, as that is the point at which the emmc bug is triggered.

I know this is a silly question, but Ive Googled and searched here on XDA and no luck.
Every AOSP based ROM says to flash EL26 kernel in order to flash the ROM (CM9, AOKP, CNA). I already have AOKP installed.
Traditionally, I just use Sfhubs EL26 one-click, then I will install CWM via Sfhubs Autoroot, boot into recovery, then I'll flash.
My question is, can I just flash the EL26 kernel (via Odin because I am on ICS ROMs) instead of that whole lengthy process I just described above? In other words, is it safe to have a Gingerbread/EL26 kernel on top of an ICS rom just so I can use CWM to flash another ICS ROM?
I understand my original, longer method is much safer. Just curious.
Also: what is the obsession with the EL26 kernel? It was never even an OTA build, why do all developers check for EL26?
Sorry for the noob questions. Thanks in advance.

You are safe flashing the EL26 CWM kernel through Odin. There's no need to return to an actual GB ROM with every flash. However, I'd suggest investing in Mobile Odin to make the process easier.
The reason everyone insists in EL26 is that it is the original custom recovery for our phones and us also the safest.
Good luck!
Mobile odin is the way to go, it's what I use it won't boot rom just into recovery and wipe and flash away. It's on the market and so is the link to the free one. You also need to install the flash apk if you use the fee one both are here on xda.

Please make sure you are using the recommended StockCWM-EL26.TAR file found here:
http://chris41g.devphone.org/index.php?dir=EpicTouch/Stock+Repack/EL26/
This kernel uses the STOCK cwm recovery. There has been a lot of concern about using any of the other repacked recoveries so this one has been deemed safe where ICS is involved.
Like the other user said, using ODIN (mobile or PC based) is far easier than using the one click root (which takes like 20-30 minutes each time).
You guys are all awesome. Really answered all my questions. Thanks to you all. !!!
What if I am on an ICS rom and I want to do a nandroid restore back to a gingerbread rom? Can I just flash the el26 kernal then go and do the restore? Also just to double check i put the kernal in the pda slot of odin correct?

That's what they say.
But I love my phone too much and I'm kinda paranoid about it so I do it the original way and use Sfhub one-click back to Gingerbread, then I restore the nandroid.
As far as which slot to use, I usually refer to this just to be safe if I can't remember:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1274337
Somewhere on that OP it tells you what the slots are used for too:
•PIT Button: This is for the partition structure when flashing an entire ROM
•BOOTLOADER Button: This is for uploading a new bootloader (we don't have, and have never used this - IGNORE!)
•PDA Button: This is for flashing kernels and ROMs (in .tar format)
•PHONE Button: This is for the phone's RADIO/MODEM ONLY!!!!!!
•CSC Button: Not sure - don't use.

As far as the mms issue have you tried the fix out there. Also I believe sfhub has a fix for your sdcard showing up when you connect to a pc as part of his 1-click. I am on Codename now and I do not have any of these issues you speak of fortunately. Actually everything I need the rom for works quite well
I have combed through the entire thread (☼[ROM] Frankenstein's Ego 4.5 (FE16 ICS)(S Voice Patch)☼ 5/21/2012) and i did NOT find my answer, in fact, i saw two posts discussing something similar, but it didn't seem to help my situation at all.
Anywho. I am LOVING this ROM, but I seem to have lost CWM? I rooted, flashed CWM, then i bought Mobile Odin to flash the EL26_StockCWM Kernel, did that successfully. I then watched QBKing77's video to install Ego (PS - i watch his videos EVERY TIME i'm doing something to my phone, they are AMAZING.) And ta da! I'm running the rom
But then I wanted to put the Rapps on and the S_Voice_Patch_v4, and I couldn't find anywhere in that thread on WHEN i'm supposed to do this (yes, as i said, i combed through the thread) so I thought, well let's flash through CWM. But I don't HAVE CWM anymore. Now I have Android system recovery? When I try to install zip from there, it errors out because of signatures. So what should I do? Should I flash back the EL26 Stock Kernel, flash the two patches, and then flash the FE16 kernel?
I'm so lost, please be kind!
I'm pretty syre I put this in the thread before but no worries we're here to help.
1. ODIN/mobile ODIN el26 w/CWM
2. Flash ROM in CWM
3. Flash Rapps
4. Flash S-voice Patch
5. Reboot and enjoy
All you have to do now though since you flashed the ROM is:
1. DL the FE16 + Kernel (Or whatever kernel you prefer)
2. ODIN/mobil ODIN el26 CWM
3. Flash Rapps
4. Flash s-voice patch
5. Flash kernel
6. Reboot and enjoy
You will always lose CWM on all ICS Kernels as I do not know of any that contain CWM. I know there is an ACS kernel out there with there recovery but that's it, no CWM. I hope this helps

Yea, you have to re-flash EL26 kernel then flash what you want then reflash the FE16 or 20 kernel and then reboot
CWM won't work most proper till we have kernel source

Flash that after you patch up everything in CWM then reboot don't worry about unzipping it
Okay, so I tried to Mobile Odin the EL26 Stock CWM and it said it flashed, but then it didn't reboot. I was going through the Odin thread where someone else had this problem, so they force stopped the app and rebooted manually, and it worked. Well, i did that, and now I'm stuck on the Samsung Galaxy boot up screen. I pulled the battery, and put it into recovery mode, and there was CWM, but it wouldn't install the files (said they were bad). tried to restart the phone again, and back to the Samsung Galaxy screen.
Did i f*** it all up?!

your probably either going to have to odin from pc, or redownload the rom/kernel files to your sd card and flash from sd thru cwm if it says the files are bad. What is the exact error cwm is giving you? as long as you make sure you are using el26 cwm to flash ics roms you will be fine and wont brick.

Well I'm already on the ICS rom. i was trying to load the patches (S Voice and Rapps). it says:
E:Can't open /sdcard/Rapps_RemovedAppsV4.zip (bad)
But the other issue is that my phone is stuck in the bootloop of the Samsung Galaxy screen. So even tho I'm on CWM right now, nothing else is working.
Sounds like bad downloads of the files getting that error in CWM. For some reason FE16 does not reboot when Mobile odin is run so for future reference just flash it and manually reboot into CWM. If both of you have CWM you are still good, just flash the FE16 Kernel and should boot back to ROM and you can retry after redownloading the files. If you cannot get to CWM you might have to PC Odin. Sorry this didn't work for you guys. hopefully we can get you up and running.

Hi all, I'm new here (well, not to XDA) as I just purchased this phone 2 days ago. I love it so far. It's such and upgrade from my LG Optimus that I almost considered not rooting or flashing ROM's. Of course, I caved in last night.
Anyway, I have a couple questions regarding Odin and the process around flashing different kernels/modems, etc. Any help would be great. I successfully flashed Blue Kuban without issues as I'm familiar with CWM and all that great stuff.
1. Is there a good tutorial that I can use to do more research on Odin? I see there's a mobile version and a PC version, so I'm not sure which to use.
2. I see in some ROM's, the install instructions state to first flash a specific kernel with Odin. Is this to prevent bricks from flashing from ICS to ICS ROM's?
3. Hypothetically, if I wanted to switch from Blue Kuban to CM9 (or any other ICS ROM), couldn't I just restore my stock GB back up and then flash CM9 (or any other ICS ROM)? If not, what is the most user friendly method you use?
Thanks all, really glad I chose this phone, it looks like there's awesome development for it! Any help is greatly appreciated!

1. OK for Odin, you can try searching for a tutorial on qbkings YouTube channel. Basically all you need to know is that the PDA slot is for kernels and such where as phone slot is for modems. Only have auto reboot checked in top right settings. Mobile Odin works the same way. You can flash kernels from there and can save you time and when you're away from a computer. It currently has problems flashing modems however. There is a paid and lite version which you can find here in xda if you search a bit.
2. Yes this is to prevent bricking which has been happening when wiping data/factory rest in custom recoveries repackaged in ICS kernels. This is why its recommended to go back to el26 because this is the last true source (we don't have ICS source yet) we had.
Whenever changing roms, you must Odin/mobile Odin the el26 cwm kernel and do any rom flashing, restoring, backing up from there. So if you want to switch to CM9 from the ICS version of Blue Kuban I'm assuming, Odin el26 cwm kernel and flash cm9+gapps there.
Anymore questions let me know

Awesome, great info and I'll definitely pick up the mobile version. So it looks like I only need to flash the kernel, not actually flast a GB Rom?
The only other thing I'm wondering is if you recommend using the Rogue CWM Recovery. I have it installed right now. Are all ROMS compatible with this recovery?
Thanks again for your quick and helpful answer!
I personally use the rouge 1.4.1 kernel to do all my flashing. Rouge recovery is built from tweaking the cwm recovery. In essence, they are the same thing. Rouge has less "no's" and the menus are better organized, so I use it.

Yea all you need is the kernel. If you're on an ICS rom when you flash the el26 cwm kernel, it won't boot your phone but you can go into recovery still.
I really wouldn't recommend any custom recovery at this time for ICS. I mean it takes maybe an extra minute odining the el26 cwm kernel or so instead of directly booting into rogue recovery. From there you can flash mods, tweaks, etc and then just reflash a compatible ICS kernel. What do you really need rogue for? Not worth the risk IMO.

Interesting. I'll have to read up more regarding Odin. So I could literally open Odin and plug my phone in and then flash the el26 kernel and flash whatever ROM I want from Odin as well? Sorry, a little confused there. Just not sure how I'd flash a ROM without a custom recovery.
Thanks again, I'll also check out some tutorials. I'm guessing it will feel like 2nd nature in a week, just learning the new process.
The recovery is built into the kernel for this device. I use odin, flash the el29 rouge kernel v1.4.1, when the phone resets after the flash, boot into recover using volume up and power, wipe, flash, whatever you want, make sure you reinstall ics rom or kernel if you are on ics and reboot.
Ah, so if I flash the EL26 Kernel, will that overwrite my Rogue Recovery?

Well download whatever rom+mods/etc and put the files on your phone. Then just odin/mobile Odin the el26 cwm kernel and flash whatever you want from there, ICS or GB without no chance of a brick.
On our phone and I think most Samsung's for that matter, the recovery isnt separate from any other partition like with HTC. It must be packed into the kernel. So whenever you flash a rom, whatever recovery is packed in with that kernel included with the rom is what you're getting. Most devs are packing in stock Android recovery to cut down on bricks and instead recommend always flashing from el26 cwm kernel.
So yea that's what makes mobile Odin so great. Have el26 on your storage and you can switch roms very fast, easy, and safe.
Anymore questions just ask.
Edit: are you on GB or ICS Blue Kuban and what rogue also?

Thanks, really good info. I'm on Blue Kuban ICS right now with Rogue CWM 5.0.2.7. Looks like Odin will be a very easy way once I get comfortable with it.
So basically, I'll put the kernel zip in the PDA slot in Odin and let it do its thing, then my phone will auto reboot into the kernel's recovery where I can flash the ROM? Or do I flash the kernel in Odin, and also flash the ROM in Odin as well?

Odin is just used to flash the safe el26 cwm kernel onto your phone. It will auto reboot and just hang at the Galaxy S II screen since the GB kernel can't boot an ICS rom so just power+volume up into it. Hold it for maybe up to 15 seconds but it'll come around. You then flash the rom in recovery from there. So put you rom files, etc on your phone before you Odin the kernel.

Kernels flashed through PDA slot in Odin will be in either .tar or tar.md5 format, .zips are for cwm recovery only. You can find the el26 cwm kernel in the kernel repository sticky in dev section, its the first kernel listed. No problem, glad to help.

I have been looking around for about an hour or two trying to find a solid tutorial on how to install a custom recovery to install new Roms. I flashed my phone onto Virgin Mobile on FH13. It seems to me that there is more than meets the eye to installing a recovery on this phone. I really don't want to mess anything up at all. Could anyone guide me the right way as to how I can get CWM on my phone? I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks!
Recovery is packed into the kernel on this phone. Flash a kernel tar through ODIN if you want, it will trigger the yellow triangle though. If your already rooted you could use Mobile ODIN. If you already have some form of custom recovery and are just trying to switch up you can flash the kernel zip in recovery.
rwilco has pretty much every kernel for every purpose but since your on stock you will either want a repacked stock or custom tw kernel - http://rwilco12.androidfilehost.com/?dir=Kernels/Recovery Kernels/ICS
If your unfamiliar then keep asking questions. Our phone has a bug in its eMMC firmware triggered during format operations on the stock kernel as of Android 4.0. The specifics are detailed but all you really need to know is grab a kernel with a safe recovery, or even going as far as AGAT's custom kernel which has more work around in place to prevent a factory reset or rom install from turning your phone into a super brick.

Also new to the e4gt, im currently rooted on fh13.
say i want to flash paranoidandroid, which kernel (which includes recovery?) would you recommend?
also this is either flashed from odin (pc) or can be done through mobile odin?
then once kernel is flashed, i can then reboot into recovery, wipe and flash rom/gapps?
sorry for all the questions, just want to make sure!

My phone already has root. Everything else is stock. 4.0.4, build FH13, with no custom recoveries.
I don't understand what you mean in your second paragraph with "repacked stock" or "custom tw kernel".
I am completely lost as to where I should be going. My plan is to install this rom: http://goo.im/devs/Shabbypenguin/E4GT-Nightlies
How would I go around to getting this on my phone?
Also, what about this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1810315
I am not sure which rom runs the fastest and most efficient. There are so many kernels for so many things, I have absolutely no idea which kernel to flash and how to flash it.
EDIT: So I have done some more reading up and I THINK I can starting to understand some of it. I assume the steps are to:
1. Install Mobile Odin Lite on my phone.
2. Flash the EL26 kernel on Odin Lite. Link to kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662295 (first kernel on the page)
3. This part I am kinda lost. Not sure if that kernel installed a new recovery or not. I assume I just reboot and go into recovery.
4. Nandroid a backup of my ICS stock that is on now? Can I even go back to this stock backup after putting on a new Rom? Which kernel would I need to install backup of stock?
5. Wipe data, dalvic, and install new Rom using instruction it came with. My problem is I want to run this Rom: http://goo.im/devs/Shabbypenguin/E4GT-Nightlies and it has no instructions. I assume you just wipe data and dalvic?
6. flash Rom, then flash Gapp? It doesn't have a link for any of the Gapps, so either I have to find a link to download Gapp or that rom already comes with it? Not sure.
7. Reboot into new Rom? Not sure if I missed a step or not.
Another question I have is with the kernels. Can I just leave it on the EL26 kernel for daily use of the phone? Say I want to install maybe cm10 next, do I just keep it on EL26?
Sorry for the spam of questions. I like to be 100% certain.
Best bet if your trying to install CM9 is to go to the EL26 CWM kernel as all of the AOSP rom instructions dictate. Using the EL26 kernel means your phone will only boot to Download and Recovery as it will only boot gingerbread roms.
Download the nightly you want to the device and then flash the EL26 CWM kernel in Mobile ODIN. After its all over with you might need to battery pull if you messed up booting into recovery and then boot into recovery (power + vol up). Install the rom. Install gapps. Wipe cache/dalvik but as I will recommend below you should just backup everything and a full wipe.
You can nandroid if you want but it will be making a copy of the ICS rom you have with the EL26 kernel on it so it is literally a restore to the point your starting from not where you were just before that. Its still a good idea if your afraid of losing things. I would use Super Backup from the market to backup your Contacts, Call Logs and MMS. Wipe cache and dalvik and all that. But realisticly you should backup your apps and data if you have Titanium Backup and start fresh just factory reset after your on CM9. Restore your apps with data (no system data) after that. A clean install will present the least of issues, even the Samsung updates from one rom to another are not without issues.
You can not boot anything but gingerbread with EL26 and once you install a rom you will be on the kernel with that rom. So you will have a Linux 3 android kernel with cwm 6 if you go with a CM9 nightly. From there you can flash the next nightly or the next beta etc. Older stuff will not flash from your new setup as AOSP roms have switched to a new device name in the build.prop.
As far as gapps here it is - http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip and don't forget to put this on the device ahead of time or you will have to mount usb and transfer using the pc in recovery.

Ah, I read it twice and now it makes more sense. I have a pretty good idea of what to do now.
Put rom and gapp on phone, install EL26, backup, full wipe, flash rom and gapp, rom will install new kernel for me, then just reboot.
Last question, I just want to make sure. What exactly is a full wipe on this phone. I have done plenty of full wipes on the evo 4g. I am just asking because I hear some people have problems when they do a full wipe.
I really appreciate your help. Thank you!
Sorry if I jumbled everything together in my post by the I was running out the door. But this Hurricanne has stopped that and I regret not taking my time.
Well what I mean is a factory reset which formats /Cache and /Data. When you install the rom its going to format /System prior to writing the new firmware/rom. /Data has all your user apps, their data and your information etc. This does not wipe the Internal SD or the External SD though at times a line saying it was does come up in CWM.
Just don't do a Factory reset on the stock kernel you are on now, its fine on EL26 its fine on the kernels that come with the CM9 nightlies. Super Backup apparently does app's now too. I have never used it since I have Titanium Backup Pro but figured its also worth mentioning.
A note on turning back. As I said before if you flash the EL26 CWM kernel you wont be able to boot the ICS rom installed on the phone. At that point to go back instead of forward you can flash the FH13 kernel in desktop ODIN or the zip in CWM and you will have the FH13 kernel instead of EL26 and be back where you were. But once you flash the EL26 CWM kernel your goal at that point is flashing your rom of choice in CWM and not things like booting the phone.
You should be "okay" coming from a dirty install just wiping cache. But you may never know if a problem your having is the rom or some left over data unless you go clean and factory reset. Its a choice and its also a choice you can make later as you can always reset later. I would back up anything important first before doing any of this. Not so much a worry about bricking, as just about any normal situation will be recoverable, but more so to the point of if you have to wipe the phone and start from scratch.

That clarified a lot, thanks.
So I did it all. I did a factory reset from the new kernel. did dalvic also. I installed the new rom and gapp. Problem is that once I reboot, it shows the Galaxy SII screen, then goes into a black screen. I can't turn it back on again, so I remove the battery and it can restart. Does the same thing though. I followed your instruction and http://e4gtcm.blogspot.com/p/cm9-install-guide.html
What did I do wrong? I am worried I messed up my phone completely.
EDIT: So I went back into recovery and it was now a new version of CWM. I did everything over again; factory reset, cache, dalvic, and it is doing the same thing. Boots up "Galaxy SII" screen, then a black screen. It seems to still be on in the black screen seeing that it doesn't "turn" on again. I can hold if for 15 second or so for it to reset and does the same thing. Why is there a black screen?
Sorry for not checking back. Your probably freaking right now lol but relax your at a good point everything is fine.
Either a bad download or the nightly you went with happens to be a baddy. I am still on 10/20 I was gonna flash 10/28 today but the weather is screwing with me. goo.im seems pretty slow today.
Download another, battery pull and hold vol up + power until it hits recovery then go into mounts and mount usb storage hook a usb cable to the pc and copy over another build. I would say try 10/20 just because it works pretty good but that won't stop another bad download in which case you have to try try again.
Worst case from here we can just odin you back to stock rooted FH13 or your choice of other. Your phone is fine from what you have told me so far. I can upload one of the builds I have if you think ti would help any.

Phew! I was pretty positive that I could still get back to something working, just my paranoid self was getting tense. I got 10/28. I guess I will do 10/20. Do you know what the other updates have? I would hate to install something that isn't working its most efficient.
Again, thank you so much. You were of great help! Good luck with the weather issue. Hope you're safe!
I stopped following chris's experimentals so i am not sure what the most recent focuses have been. The Nightlies have whatever code was commited. They are built automatically and can range from very stable to not booting at all. I dont have any of the links on me but someone can get it to you. Reading commits is not exactly 100% user friendly especially if your not a developer. But they often have clues. I would follow the CM9 Beta thread and the CM9 User Support Threads - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1874374 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1720771
I used to DL nightlies from work over 3g or 4g all the time and would get a bad dl and end up in situations where even my experienced self felt like I couldn't fix it till I got home and always got the phone running within an hour without the assistance of a near by pc.
I am uploading 10/20 to my server just in case its in Chicago so if your away from the weather it should be unaffected for the most part. Glad its not in NY anymore.

Good evening all. I hope this is the right forum to post my question about recovery for my e4g touch. I recently rooted my phone and my phone is currently on the fi27 build. Is there a recovery i can put on there now to go ahead and start flashing ruins, or will i have to wait for qbkng77 to post his video on you tube on putting cwm recovery on fi27 rooted e4g touch? Thanks in advance for the help!

I assume you do the same thing as I did. Get the EL26 kernel and flash it with Mobile Odin. I would wait on someone else to confirm that though.
Another really quick question. I want to overclock my phone. I tried using setcpu and the overclocker it came with. It only goes to a max of 1200 but I know it can go higher. I am guessing I need another kernel. What kernel can I use?

You either need a kernel with built in over clock support(you'd see the CPU slider go up to 1400-1600 automatically if it was). Or a kernel that supports over locking in tegrak, which you "load over clock module" with in tegrak.
Both Kuban kernel and some of Agats kernels have built in support, mine you need to use tegrak as I have not added built in yet
You can get them all in rwilco's (awesome) kernel repository stickied in development

I have some questions and need help fast if possible. I'm currently on CM10 beta 2 and only have a nandroid backup from being stock rooted. I know you can't simply restore a backup from jelly bean to ICS. I was playing with ROM Toolbox, and was installing some custom transitions. I did a backup of the stock transitions, but the zip backup file won't flash in recovery. Anyway I can't boot up and only get the Galaxy S II boot screen. I can however get into download and CM CWM based recovery. I've done quite a few searches, with no real answers for this issue. Any help will be greatly apreciated because I don't have my phone until I figure out exactly what to do. Do I have to download a stock ROM with cusom kernel to computer then transfer over file via usb using Odin and then use CWM to flash the stock ROM? I know not to do a factory wipe unless I'm on el26 or 29. I also know you can odin to them then flash, but all the odin kernels with CWM are from ICS and I can't find a solid method for my specific situation.

Thanks Blues.

Thanks Blues. But I need to flash el29 or six before flashing right? So I'm guessing I need to Odin to one? And I can do that from any ICS or JB right? So I just need the one click for PC Odin, then flash with Odin? Sorry, I just want to be 100% here.

Use the one click.exe full rom file that will flash the full el29 gb rom. Then from there you can flash cwm to flash cm10 or whatever rom you want.
But do I have to go el29 or 26? How do I get there from where I'm at now? Thanks again, and sorry I just want to be 100% here.
Edit: Okay, great. After flashing that I obviously could do my nandroid restore? Just because I lost some pictures or something happened when I flashed to JB because I only had a few pics and none of my SMS or call logs or anything came through.
Ok, just so the thread is not a complete waste, I did flash the stock ROM via PC ODIN. Went back to stock, was able to do a nandroid restore, and went ahead and flashed CWM recovery via Mobile ODIN. Went ahead and wiped factory in CWM recovery and flashed CM10. Thanks again Blues, next time I'll just post in your noob thread. . I'm not a noob but I just never had to PC ODIN when not being able to boot and wasn't sure how safe it was in my specific state.
P.S. Any other users are more than welcome to P.M. me if you have any questions. I probably won't visit here again
