how do i switch from twrp to tcwm? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

can i flash the newest tcwm with extsdcard support over twrp2? or do i have to use odin to install it? if i did, would it overwrite twrp or do i have to delete it first? how do you delete the recovery? i like twrp but i want to try out tcmw to see if it fixes my extsdcard mounting issues.

You can do it from Rom manager.

I personally don't like ROM manager. If you are rooted I would say flash a custom recovery and back up ROMs from there. If you ever brick your phone you can still access recovery while you can't access ROM manager.
About the not being able to back up ROMs, check the backup location or your settings. The rom might not also include that feature. CWM recovery is the way to go for all of that.
OK thanks will try soon.

ROM manager does not play nice with our phones. Look for sfhub's auto root sticky, in there you will find an option to add CWM. Backup from there

TWRP vs. CWM?

Can someone explain to me the pros and cons of switching to TWRP? I want to move to TWRP because it's new and shiny but I'm afraid about the part of the backups not being compatible with each other. Is there anything I need to know before I make the jump?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
... if your going to use twrp and not switch back... its not really any different other than backups not being cross compatible... but so what if your stick to twrp.

Isn't TWRP only compatible with some roms though?

Nope you can inject twrp after flashing any rom or kernel to retain the recovery...

It's not compatible with some programs like rom manager and titanium backup, but can be "injected" into all ROM setups. I stick with CWM because I love the way I can name my own nandroids from rom manager. That's a deal breaker for me if I can't.
I use TWRP on my Kindle because that was the method at the time. Like mentioned before you cannot rename your backups which can get really confusing. I see no need to use TWRP over CWM, and personally wouldn't use it if you had CWM already installed. It would be like taking a giant step backwards IMPO.

I use TWRP mainly because it's easier to navigate.
Epic Ice Cream Sandwich
You can go into /sdcard/TWRP/backups/(ur serial number) and there will be a file folder that contains your backup all you have to do is rename it

Twrp is interactive, newer, a little easier to use as it is more straightforward.
Sent using FTL technology from the resurrection ship.
If you rename a TWRP backup file TWRP will no longer have the ability to locate it. Or at least this was the case on my Kindle using the method described above.

it worked perfectly for me this morning

Installing a recovery

This may be a dumb question but to install a recovery from goomanager... You have to be rooted right?
I'm stock now and trying to install a custom recovery and then flash roms... Are there any custom recoveries you can install from Odin?

You need root to install custom recoveries also to flash ROMs. You have your choice between twrp and cwm. I know twrp has Odin flashable files on their site. Easy as pie.

Is this the way by flashing a whole new stock rom with root injected? Trying to avoid that if possible.

Bah there a simple way hut trips then flash counter ( which does matter because we can clear the flash counter)
Its just say casual rooting I think. Its intended at&t development section. Its a one click deal basically. You need to be rooted to do anything with odin

Upgrading recovery

I'm currently on cwm non touch recovery an want to upgrade. I'm not sure which one I should upgrade but I see a lot of devs suggest twrp touch recovery so I guess that one. Do I just download the recovery an flash it on cwm? An when I do have it installed how do I flash ROMs do I just select the ROM an the recovery will clear caches? Or do I have to flash another zip before like with cwm I flashed the super wipes?

To flash TWRP you to get Goo Manager from the play store.
Open it up and click on "flash rom"... it will ask you if you want it to find you one. Select that option.
It will then say it will DL TWRP. Once it is done with the DL it will flash TWRP to your phone.
And bam....your in the latest TWRP

Thanks!!!!! I did it already. When I'm going to flash a new ROM what do I have to do? On cwm der was the superwipe zip I had to flash before is it the same on twrp?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
Dont use super wipe. Not good with TWRP.
Do a full backup first of your current rom. Do a complete wipe. When you hit the wipe option it will tell you all that it will wipe.
Next hit install from the main menu...choose you zip for your rom. Let it do its thing then reboot system.
All done

Ok so I don't need to remove it, and recovery mode is now controlled by twrp? I'm making a fresh backup now anyway, better safe than sorry.

does anyone know why twrp will never install roms from goomanager and rom manager

I'm having problems with twrp downloading my zip files for my roms: it doesn't work in rom manager and goomanager: and sometimes when i'm in twrp and use the install option:
TWRP doesn't install roms automatically if you want something like that you would have to use CWM
