is defy water resistant? NO! - Defy General

So i tried to take few shots underwater but after that my defy didtn work. I sent it to service and tey said that motherboard is damaged by water and repair would cost 133USD! Yes, its my fault, but dont try your defy underwater... my was just 20cm under the water level... Now im looking for a new phone because repair is expansive i think and its better to buy new one. So any tips for new phone?
I kinda like Sony xperia S

LOL dude, my Defy (MB525) goes swimming with me when I have swimming practices, I have an arm belt for it and Defy goes to at least 1m depth for 1h.
I recommend Xperia Acro S

lucky you!

Mine has never had problems either.
Perhaps you did not plug the earplug hole properly, close the usb-cover or put on the back securely?
Or perhaps you have dropped your phone one time too many causing it to no longer be waterproof?

Dude, sorry for your Defy.
How old was it? I think its seal must have wore off over the period of time, as I can feel now that the USB cover is not fitting properly as when it was New. Also there are cracks around the panel screws on the side.

Exactly what happened to my girlfriends defy. Sea-water inc., nothing worked. Cleaned mainboard with pure alcohol and a bristle brush and everything is working fine again. Who sayd alcohol ain`t fixing any problems?

it was 6 months old, i properly closed the covers, but i think the usb cover didnt do his job properly...

It's water resistant, but....
Hi there!
Yes, the Defy is water resistant, but only if it's clean inside.
The tiny rubber linings have to be cleaned,
otherwise the dust can pile up between the linings and the cover, so the water can leak in.
As my diver friend used to say: Nothing is waterproof, while the sealing gets dirty.

i had two defys so far, both of them were waterproof, showered with them, put them into a river, etc...
sent from my jellybean defy...

The Defy is water resistant not water proof. Now there's the difference. Also salt water affects water resistant/proof devices even more.

Why on earth would you go swimming with your Defy attached...? The screen is totally useless when wet.

water makes touchscreen goes crazy..
but hey, i read somewhere Xperia Acro S touchscreen is good even it's wet..
i dont know hows that possible, maybe new hardware of capacitive touchscreen which ignore water electricity value.
on defy or another capacitive screen device, our touch gives a unique value of electricity so it would react to it..
and it seems water value and our skin touch value is near the same.

Defy+ has IP67 certificate that defines Defy+ as water proof, Defy is also water proof but it was released before Defy got that certificate.
I go swimming because i need a track of my pulse, and I practice swimming professionally for over 6 years now, I use some apps for data track like pulse and distance etc

Lol @ wet finger tracking. I'll tell my gf about this phone. Nice piece of hardware tough, I always liked Sony products but not the big "strap hole" (another peculiar Sony word) on this one unless it can open beer bottles. And I'm not that Active anyhow.Has the same IP67 (Test duration: 30 minutes Immersion at depth of 1m) water proof as our beloved Defy. Wonder how that wet finger tracking works and whether Quarx could make it a flashable zip.
@picture
Add a big lump of salt and do that test again.

Ah, you're right I was confused. The defintion is indeed water proof, but we're talking about water immersion. Only IP 8 has "continual water submersion in under water conditions".

Have you ever seen that particular certificate? I know how it should look like (worked in manufacturing and was responsible for test&cert) and I have not seen it... actually nobody has and to be honest, I don't believe that a device with such flimsy USB cover can get the IP67 stamp from a authorized certification body. There are so many Defys coming from manufacturing with a bent USB connector which prevents complete closure of the USB cover, I personally saw 3 pieces out of 7 or 8 that went through my hands having this problem, even my own Defy+ has that problem and I don't care since I don't swim with it. If your's "IP67 compliant", you're a lucky person. But don't count on the fact that if water gets in, you'll be safe for a replacement. Being waterproof is just the usual marketing BS

It was water resistant when it was new
Hi Guys,
My defy + was water resistant when it was new. I even put it under running tap water when my friends asked for proof of its water-resistive-nature. :good:
Now that it is about 4 months old with me and I had to open the USB flap daily twice to do charging or to connect to PC.
Opening the flap twice a day has made the flap loose and it would not fit the same way it fitted before(when it was brand new).
So i'm not sure if it is still water resistant. It is water resistant in the front and back speakers and the mic . and the battery cover is pretty much intact. Also the 3.5 mm audio jack is also good with its flap.
"My question is" -- how to make the USB flap to be more rigid than it is now and is there a handling way to open and close the flap so that It would not come loose. ???????
Cheers,
Vic

When I first got my Defy I was confident enough (still having return warranty) to stir some cocktails with it to prove to my workmates it was water-proof.
Recently I got it back from a complete overhaul & repair due to the speaker bug and button backlights not working, and in the process the rubber lining of the battery compartment was also exchanged. After a short kajak tour where I had confidently kept it in my pants pocket that had gotten fairly wet but never submerged into water I noticed I heard the other end only very silently, and when trying to charge it constantly toggled the connection, but I still did not think of anything bad. Only the next morning I noticed foggy spots underneath the screen, and when I took out the battery there were a few tiny drops of water inside!
Luckily, after drying it completely everything still seems to work, so I was either pretty lucky or the Defy (while obviously not 100% water-tight) is rather water-resistant

I went swimming for approx 1 hour having the defy in my back pocket (i really forgot it there, no joke!). But it's important to keep the interior clean. Dust particles can decrease the waterproofness.

[Q] Liquid Damage on phone?!

Hi guys.
So, last night I had a can in my pocket. Unfortunately, it was the same pocket that my phone was in Anyway, as I just walked past the gate, it caught it slightly, which caused the can to gash, and start pouring liquid.
I quickly took the phone out of the pocket and ripped the battery out... It was working when I took the battery out, and quickly shook it to try and get all liquid out of the phone. I don't think much got in to it, but there was some. I tried to wipe out as much of the liquid as possible, and the phone has currently been left standing in dry rice overnight.
My question is, was this the right thing to do? As far as I remember it is... But, I also wonder where the liquid indicators are, and what they look like? I know that there is one on the battery at the bottom. On my phone, it is all white... Is this what it looks like when apparantly no water damage has occured? What does it look like when water damage has occured?
Where else are the indicators?
Any info greatly received.
Feel such an idiot for putting them both in the same pocket Hopefully if worst comes to worst, my insurance will cover it. Only other problem is, I only claimed about 3 months ago!!! lol
Also, how long should I leave it in the rice?

Since it is soda the perfectly right thing whould actually have been to wash the phone in water to get all the suger liquid out of the phone.. But who would do that when they werent absolutely sure the phone actually got soda on the internal parts?
I would have done the same thing as you .. !
I would say you did exactly the right thing by powering off the phone (i.e. taking the battery out) as quickly as possible. Then leave the phone off until you're sure it's all dried out, then you can try to turn it on again.
The moisture indicators start off white and turn pink/red when exposed to water - at least, that's the colour they went on my Touch Pro 2 (whose indicators gradually turned that way over time, even though they hadn't got directly wet).

Thanks for the vote of confidence
Just been out to get some more rice, as unfortunately, last night I had rice for tea, and only just had enough to barely cover the phone. So, totally covered it now... Hopefully will suck up any last drop of moisture...
As for the indicators, I can see one on the inside under where the battery compartment is, but not sure whether there will be any inside the actual phone, but not opening it up to see...
Will give it until tonight at some point. How long do people think I should give it? A full 24 hours? Would less be ok, or should I give it more?!
I can't see any water indicators other than the one on the bottom of the battery. Which seems slightly odd to me, given that the battery is easily replaceable. Perhaps there are some more underneath the covers inside ?
As for how long to leave it, difficult to say because only you know how much liquid your phone was exposed to. I would err on the side of caution if I was you. You could also put the phone in an airing cupboard or similarly warm place to try and help.

Are they the only 2, as I don't think any liquid got near them...
Will put the tub in the airing cupboard tonight when I get home... Probably leave till the morning at least...
Those don't look like moisture indicators to me though, I think they're just covering the screws.
I only assumed, I don't know shizzle.
But it looks to me like they stay intact throughout his mod. So I don't think they are screw covers.
.... Just jabbed at mine a bit with a screwdriver, I still think it could be the moisture things, but I cant be sure.
Also, because it looks to be exactly the same type of thing as what's on the battery (albeilt circular, not rectangular), I assume they are the liquid detection things... I originally thought they were screw covers, but then realised that there was the void cover over one of the screws, as shown in the teardown... So, I imagine they are just the moisture detectors...
Someone could always try licking one hehe
ok cool, I assumed they were screw covers, looks like I'm wrong then.
OK, turned phone on. Working fine from what I've tested. Seemed a little sluggish, but dunno whether it's just me thinking it, or it actually is... But, one problem ... The screen appears to have got a little damaged...
Look at the dull/bright contrasts
Looks like it's time to read t&c's of insurance...

Give it a little time. That's what my wife's phone looked like after spending the night in a room that had some condensation problems (waterdrops literally hanging from the ceiling). It dried out just fine. Of course no dousing in her case, just very humid air that condensed so YMMV.
Dont feel bad, it happens to all of us. A friend of mine put his Vibrant in a bag that had his soda bottle in it. The soda bottle had a leak or something and after maybe 30 minutes, he pulled out his phone and it was drenched...now he owns a MT4G Best mistake he ever made
Anyway, Good luck, I always put my phone in rice after leaving in my pants pocket and sending it through the wash...several times this happend...It just kept ticking - but it was not a smart phone so...
Oh yeah it definitely happens to all of us as some point. I had a brand new HTC Dash (yes this was a while ago). Literally out of the box less than an hour.
I had it sitting in my shirt pocket and bent over in to an engine compartment.
Yes, the phone went flying.
Now this was a pretty clean, large, diesel engine compartment on a boat. Odds should have been on my side. They weren't though.... the phone found a tiny puddle of hydraulic fluid and soaked that stuff up really good before I managed to fish it out. To it's credit it kept on working just fine afterwards but the screen never quite got get rid of the lavalamp look the hydraulic oil caused.
The Dash in question was the replacement for a phone that drowned in the bilge of a dinghy. Boating is hard on phones I guess
lol, thanks for all the support guys...
Guess I'll give it a bit of time to see how things go. Don't think the screen will ever return to normality, as I imagine it's just the sugar that's giving that effect. Working ok though...
Question is, do I wait it out, until I get another issue at all? Or do I just go straight to insurance?! Decisions, decisions
I would be tempted to try disassembling it and cleaning the sceen. You have nothing to loose since you are already doing an insurance claim if it doesn't get better anyway.
i wonder if hair dryer would help at all?
any thoughts on this idea?

Attention: waterproof is not vapourproof

I am a hiker so I need a phone with waterproof feature, I had Moto Defy before and now Sony LT26W.
Sometimes I put the phone in my pocket when I was walking or climbing and it was always sweat drenched. Water did not break through the protection, but I think that the vapour couldn't be stopped because the water vapor molecule is much smaller than water droplet.
Now, both the two phones work not very well, always crash for no reason.

[Q] Anyone gone swimming or showered with the Moto360 ?

Anyone gone swimming or showered with the Moto360 ?
Sorry if the question sounds absurd but would like to hear if anyone has done so or done so regularly and if there are any issues. I practically wear my casio 24x7 ... so just wanted to know.
Thanks.
The moto 360 IS NOT RATED FOR SHOWER OR POOL. If you look up what the ip67 rating really is, the device cannot withstand forceful jets of water or extended submersion. It was designed to withstand dust and short immersion or gentle splashes - NOT hot shower jets or extended submersion in the pool. I have seen a lot of misunderstanding on what exactly the device is rated for and would hate to see people trash their watches assuming its "waterproof" because it is not.

Thanks. I just don't understand if it is really that much harder to make it fully waterproof when so many normal watches are water proof.
I wonder if the limitation is really around the wireless charging as most waterproof watches needs a steel back screwed on or due to the touch screen.
Well there are several spots that water could eventually infiltrate, if hot and or if a jet spray. The button, the back, the USB sticker, etc. Also, with a smart watch it is definitely more difficult to seal as opposed to a full steel case with screwed on back plate as you mentioned. To top it off, if I were Motorola I would stay conservative on what I had the device rated for to try to keep down issues of people seeing "waterproof" and going hog wild at the amusement park or cash wash with high pressure spray hitting the device.
Here's a video try:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khmC5EwdwqQ
And here's what Moto says:
Is my Moto 360 water resistant and water proof?
Moto 360 is water resistance, meaning it can sustain sweat and rain.
Water resistant in up to 1 meter of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. Exposure of leather band to water is not recommended.
Note: Moto 360 is IP67 rated.
That being said, I have not tried it.
I used mine in the shower its was fine however the water makes the screen flip out because it detected the water as the screen being touched which is normal however because the display can be waked by tapping it it was difficult to stop it from doing things while wet. So yes you should be fine in the shower. however if you decide to do anything ridiculous with yours don't come crying to me about water damage. I'm not liable for your actions. but mine was fine.
I drive a motorcycle, have been caught in some heavy rain with the M360, no issues thus far. Everything works fine.
I wouldn't recommend swimming in a pool or taking a shower with it on, there is no point really.
Well I mean I poured a bottle of water over mine to freak out my friends, but that is within the ip67 certification. Shower and pool really aren't.
Showered and washed dishes with it.
Like some people said- the screen flips out if you shower with it, as it senses every little drop of water as if it's been touched.
EDIT- btw, jets of water in the shower?? What kind of awesome jet shower head do you guys have?? Mine just spits water out with a very reasonable amount of pressure.
Btw I read on motos support site that they don't replace devices with water damage so I'd be very careful

I work in a hospital and have no problems washing my hands... But I do take off the watch to take a shower.
You can't wear it in the shower, because as others have stated the screen goes ape-sh*t...
Same goes with jacuzzi or probably pool...
My Gear 2 had the option of only waking the screen by pushing the button, but 360 doesn't have that option yet
Wore my gear 2 in the shower all the time and they are rated the same. I never had any issues... I got that thing wet all the time never had an issue. Wore it in the river for about 4 hours and was fine as well. That is until I got tackled and it went floating down the river haha
Also know someone who threw their Galaxy S5 in a hot tub for 30 minutes and it was fine!
I shower with mine all the time. I use WearLocker to lock the screen so it doesn't go crazy. No issues so far.
It is high time there was a consumer protection law requiring all manufacturers provide free repair for water damage of water resistant, waterproof or weather-sealed products, regardless of warranty status unless a) the device is clearly labeled with a maximum depth and the manufacturer can prove it was exceeded, or b) the manufacturer can prove the damage happened prior to immersion. As is, it borders on fraud to advertise a product as capable of withstanding one meter immersion for half an hour, and to then say water damage is not covered under warranty in any circumstances.

Just so you know, there is absolutely no such thing as a "waterproof" watch. There are only varying levels of resistance. Even watches that are rated to a depth of 100m can't have their buttons pushed while under water; they'll leak. Diving watches also have limits. Ever noticed how much larger electronic devices are when they are certified for diving? Do you really want that on your wrist? There's additional concerns with a device like this as well...as in the discharge of heat. You don't want the processor to overheat just because the whole thing has been insulated against water to a ridiculous degree. And it has a capacitive display. Not so great in water. Not really necessary to further waterproof the thing. (A little bit more would be nice...perhaps IP68?).

I strongly disagree. Companies should not have to pay for the lack of common sense on the users' part.

Glass back just cracked like that!!

Got My new edge+ yesterday. I was happy as a child playing with it all day. In the evening I was ready to go to sleep, the edge was a bit warm of using it, not hot but just warm. Didn't play games or so, just usual apps installing, browsing, YouTube, etc... I wanted to check something on my surface pro which was on the kitchen table. I layed my edge next to it on the table on its glass back, no cover. While I was busy on my surface I heard strange noises, like things cracking. At first I couldn't see where it came from, It lasted several minutes. After I was done I took my phone to put it on the charger and I felt something strange on the back. DAMN, the entire back cover was cracked, not just a bit but scattered! Just like that! I went crazy, really. It seems that the metal band just crashed the glass back cover. I suspect the the colder surface of the kitchen table shrinked the warm metal band of the edge and so crushing the glass somehow.... How on earth am I going to explain this in the store where I bought it? They will say I dropped it, but I didn't for sure. You can't see any dent or scratch proving that. I will see how it goes tomorrow, will keep you posted. I'll make some pictures as well and post them here. This Is clearly a manufacturers faulty construction. So beware of warm devices on a colder surface!!

Wow that's amazingly unlucky . I don't get glass backs on phones. 90% of the time it's covered by a case so what's the point. I'd rather have a strong plastic back.
There could have been a hairline crack there all along, it doesn't seem likely that a 'warm' phone on a 'cool' surface would cause it, there would need to be some more extremes of temperature I am certain, else this would be a commonly reported issue.
I wish you luck back at the retailer, I would definitely consider insurance and at least a minimal case to protect the back, there are some decent transparent ones that don't spoil the look too much

Man, that's really unfortunate. I can't imagine those temperature changes would cause that though, good luck at the store!

Nah, I really don't think so at this point. I am pretty sure this is an unfortunate incident.

Hairline might Be possible, i certainly didn't notice it. But how do you explain the crushing of the glass, that lasted for minutes? It wasn't a dry crack, it kept on cracking, I saw the splinters popping of even when I held the device in my hand. I really felt like it was being crushed. Also notice the edges of the glass, like there was a big pressure on it

Oh Lord have mercy! Here we go again, lets all panic and start some silly puerile post like that.
Oh, BTW if you place any phone in your back pocket and sit on it it will stand a very genuine chance of damage.
Lets keep things in perspective.

Glass, all glass, is to a degree unpredictable. I have seen Navy war ship port holes 18" Diameter and 1" thick bounce off a concrete floor and not break. I have also seen the very same portholes be left overnight only to find one smashed to pieces with no apparent reason at all in the morning?
Same thing can happen with 50 grand watches, sapphire glass is second in hardness only to diamond yet tap it in the 'right spot' and bingo? Come to mention it same thing with uncut diamonds!
Problem here will be trying to convince the sales outlet that it may not be a customer error. Now that may take some doing.

Yup! Pretty much what I was thinking. Glass is a very temperamental material and I think this guy was just unlucky. Mobile phone insurance is essential.

Same thing happened to me! But on the front of my screen ;-; I didn't drop it ever and just sent it in to Samsung 2 days ago for a warranty check. It's been delivered to UPS but haven't been given any feedback yet from Samsung. I hope mine gets fixed or I will be pissed!

As a suggestion, could it be a faulty battery? My previous iphone 4s had the same problem, the old battery started to expand and caused the back glass to crack.
Hope you they replace it for you mate
When people replace the screens they heat the glass back of the phone up to a pretty high level just to pull it off. I would say something other than heat caused the issue.
How did that happen??????!!!
wha? you are really??

next time, don't use any phone without a cover + screen protector. nuff said. You buy a high end $800 USD device and risk it like that, that's expected

More to the point, why do you buy a lovely looking shiny brand new phone then proceed to double the thickness, double the weight and make it look absolutely hideous?
I don't see why people do it - It's a phone - Use it, it WILL get scratches and it WILL get the odd knock if you're not careful. I always use mine naked and if you're careful and just use it normally you'll only ever pick up one or two scratches that you have to look in sunlight to see, over the two years of the contract.

Question Waterresistant?

Hi,
Got my F3 almost a week ago, but comming from a Sony XZ1c I'm used to a waterresistant phone. I know this isn't in the specs, but some things just keep me wondering....
see 2m30s: Jerry takes out the simtray of the F1 and there's no rubber sealing. The F3 clearly has one:
see 0m12s or look at your own if you're as lucky as I am Also the outside of the USB port seems to have some rubber around it (see 1m16s) but I can't see the inside.
Also GSMarena was curious (https://www.gsmarena.com/poco_f3-review-2248p2.php)
"We can say two things for sure - the Poco F3 has fewer ports than the X3 Pro - hence fewer potential water entries - and it seems the F3 has similar SIM and USB port insulations as the ones on the Poco X3 Pro. Long story short - we do believe the F3 is protected against splashes, but for some reason, the maker isn't advertising it as such."
In the Poco teardown video I can't get a clear look at the speaker ports and even using a magnifier I'm unable to see if there any kind os sealing on the inner end of the holes in de phone.
What is your opinion? Who's maybe more adventurous or experienced to see if the holes have been waterproofed?
Have a great weekend!

Personally I think it's water resistant but they've decided to not get it officially tested to lower costs so they could instead spend on an amoled and snap 870 5g. So my opinion is it is water resistant however we'll never know for sure

I agree, I have the same feeling as well.
Looking at the rubber sealing they for sure thought about water ingress protection, but did not go for official certification to safe cost.

Reminds me of the OnePlus One if i remember correctly they did the same.
It seems it will be like POCO F1 - unofficialy annouced to be splash resistant after some time of release. Personally I have no knowlage about it. I used poco f1 in the light rain or spilled some drops on it and I had never face an issue.
Thank you all!
I'never actually made made my old phone really wet, but knowing it can handle it gives a peace of mind
Too bad I don't know how they made the lower speaker holes....
I'd say most phones these days are splash resistant with a tempered glass screen protector and TPU case.
I bought my Mi Pad 4 in 2018 when there was little to no IP rating phones on the market and I've used it under snowy and rainy conditions during bus stops, it's still working perfectly with 94% battery charge.

Funny it can handle a splash after all after Jerry finds that "they made no effort to make it water resistant at all" or something like that. And a reassuring thought also

True, chances of it ever getting wet without any case at all are very very small. Using it without a case it'll probably slip right out of my hand in a day or 2
Sorry for obsessing guys
Finally managed to make a pic of the bottom speaker holes. They're not completely open after all but there seems to be a small grid of somekind.
Seems the holes in the grid are too small for water.
Now I'll try to leave the topic alone until it actually drops in the water
Ok, probably it really is since the K40 pro has what seems to be the exact same design and is IP53. I really don't beleive that internally there's something different with the ports so guess you're right:"they saved costs for and official rating and can use it now as a ksp for the pro
Well, I can say that I've already accidentally tested this myself. The other night I accidentally knocked over half a glass of water right on top of the screen, and left it for a minute or two before I noticed. I just wiped it off and haven't had a single problem.

ok that is good to know. So aparently the very tiny speaker grill on the top left front of the display (barely visible to the naked eye) has been protected too.
Thanks for testing
Xiaomi doesn't was to pay for certification to keep the prices low for consumers, but I'm pretty sure the phone has splash/dust proof equivalent to IP53 rating.
Someone was kind enough to try
PLZ deleted.. stupid XDA App...
All those dunk tests... don't try it.
Failure is always the last result
Thanks, i won't, unlocking a new phone is tense enough
fyi, I forgot to remove my phone from my pocket when I went in the swimming pool. For around 10min under maybe 50cm of water.
I press on/off button and worked great. But for 2min.
I made noob mistakes (trying to unlock it, pressing buttons, and blowing through holes) and after 2min, it died. Reboot and screen slowly turned off. I think the buttons are the worst part of the phone, I could literally drink the water that went into the phone from them. Crazy.
Anyway, my adventure with the F3 ends here Gonna make a last attempt in few days again (after drying it for 3 days into rice). Going back on my S10e.. which is waterproof ^^

Rice doesn't work! NO!
Pull the rear cover and disconnect the battery asap!!!
Place in a warm dry room with a fan on it. Allow to completely dry, more is better than less. At least 2 days.
For better water removal:
If it doesn't have a LCD display, you can flush with anhydrous (96-99% only!) isopropyl alcohol to absorb the water. Be careful if it can get in between the glass and display, avoid this as it may leave a water mark. Get as much as the isopropyl off then by using centrifugal force and gravity*. Proceed to the drying procedure above.
Isopropyl is flammable so don't get stupid with it.
Never use it or any solvent around a LCD display; it will poison the display.
Use your best judgement. If you are successful the device will function normally.
If not it's likely because you delayed in removing the battery.
If it was salt water... it's already dead.
*Dry, oil free low pressure (5-15 psi) compressed air can be used to more efficiently displace/dry the isopropyl alcohol. Get under the BGA chipsets on the mobo with it. Connectors and switches. Don't go too nuts but blowout as much as possible without driving it in between the display/glass.
