[Review] Official Samsung Galaxy Nexus desktop holder [Docomo SC05 卓上ホルダー] - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

[Review] Official Samsung Galaxy Nexus desktop holder [Docomo SC05 卓上ホルダー]
Two days ago, I ordered the SC-05D desktop holder from my local Docomo shop here in Tokyo. Oddly, the desktop holder shares a similar model number to the Galaxy Note (slightly different - SC-05D and SC05), but at ¥3870, I knew what I was getting! The shop didn't have any in stock, but I was called last night to be informed that I could collect the desktop holder at my earliest convenience, which was today's lunchtime.

What struck me at first was the overall size and weight of the box. I thought perhaps a charger was included, but the cause is simply down to the weight of this study docking station. It weighs more than the phone, which stops it sliding around the desk - in addition to the grippy material on the underside of the holder.
The back of the unit comprises a micro USB and Line Out (untested at the time of writing). The dock is connected to my laptop and the phone rests neatly inside the holder and automatically displayed the clock
Overall, I am very impressed with this device, and would recommend it to anyone.

Do you think that the phone would still fit in this dock if it had a case on? What about the slightly larger extended battery?
Thanks!

I don't think the extended battery will fit with this dock I'm afraid; though as I have this dock in my office, I won't be needing an extended battery

I have this dock and I also have the extended battery (official one ) and can confirm it fits in the dock just fine ( GSM Version )

The dock looks lovely, and upon reading your review I went to see how much they were...
I think I almost had a heart attack when I learned that it goes for £25 ish here, and was in the region of £50 when it came out, which begs the question, are they making these things of solid gold?
The other thing is, does the screen automatically turn off in clock mode? as I would get a bit worried about burn in if it was left like that all the time, as it seems you can't hit the power button while its dock. As well as the fact that I like to charge it by my bed, and the light on would wake me up.

Wait how much is it in US dollar??? And do you have a link???

you can buy this from google play store for $54+tax+shipping

The default dock clock goes to a screen saver after a certain amount of time which sees the time move around the screen so no fixed image.
The screen also dims after a certain time so making OK to use as a night time clock (which I do )

Has anyone an idea if it will be available even for his brother Galaxy SII? I will move to it when I will get a similar docking.....
Yup, there is going to be a desktop dock available for the SGS II.

It has just charging and audio out. Putting the phone in the dock turn it in night mode (that for me is "night display" of Gentle Alarm).
seems a bit pricey though - has anyone seen them cheaper ? or something similar ?
Is audio out coming from the usb port or is it streamed over bluetooth much like the Nexus?

Does anyone know how the phone knows it's in the dock? I know the Motorola Milestone (that I switched from to the S2) had magnets in it to detect the car dock or the desk dock. I fancy having a go at mocking up a dock that the phone will actually recognise until there's a bit more choice on the market to buy a "real" one..
Cheers,
KEv.

Yeah, now the OP's was Landscape and this one is portrait. I use(d) my HD2 in its portrait holder and it was ok but most photo's were in landscape so the screen was not really used (I used KSlide to turn it into a digital photo frame whilst on my desk).
A landscape one would be great!
has anyone found any of the official cradles for sale ?
all i can find are some pretty horrible examples on ebay ...

Lol yeah right! If you lay it on its side.... just like every other dock!
the side edges, that become the bottom edge when it's on it's side, are angled backwards/inwards... so if you put it on it's side it reclines slightly to give you a decent viewing angle. Not seen any other docks with that design... still, I'll have to have a long hard talk with myself before I allow myself to spend £40 on it!
Anyone know if the sticky universal stands, like the Desk Genie or Desk Magic Smart, work with the textured back and bottom-bump of the S2?
Official Charger?
It *looks* like this might also hold the phone in landscape. If you look at the close up of the dock "U" slot, it doesn't appear to directly plug into the phone i.e. a USB connector. If so, then it will probably hold the phone landscape

am i right in saying that this is just a stand rather than a charger ? it charges a spare battery rather than the phone itself ?
Sadly yes.
Yeah it looks kind of odd but maybe they have thought about the health of the battery?
Not good to have it always 100% so maybe a good solution in a office?
does anyone know if this would trigger the dock mode on the SGS2 ?
is there any other advantage to the official dock over the crappy ones you get on auction sites ?
bump... does anyone know if the cradle's or spare batteries sold on Ebay for about $20-30 will work (i.e. not ruin) the SGS2?

I got two batteries off ebay for about £6 (which I think is $9 monopoly dollars?). Why would they "ruin" the SGS2? I also got one of the slimline, up-right cradles and its been working fine.

I wouldn't recommend the dock as a stand-in dock, where you plug it in on the go, or quickly. The phone is only supported by the actual USB plug! So I'd be REALLY worried about the port getting loose over time, so I'd skip that. I had that happen to my SGSII. But on the other hand, you can lay it down and it was made for this, too! So there is no need to worry about the usb plug getting loose. I really like it for this. Just look at the last 2 pictures.
I hope you like it! It's a decent dock, I guess. It's more of a stand now. Haha.

Am tempted by this dock... but don't understand what you're saying here. I mean... in the images it looks like there's a rear-support for the phone to lean against. Do you have to faff with this or something, or does it remain up, so you can just drop the phone on and have it lean?
Alternatively, does anybody have suggestions for docks that work with cases? I got the iGadgitz case (link), which I'm totally pleased with... it doesn't turn your pockets inside-out when pulling it out.

Tap it to the right or to the left, and it'll put some kind of strain on the phone's port. That's what I don't like. I have a dock that DOES support the sides, and still ended up busting the port. I don't use the inbuilt charging feature. I just put it in the landscape orientation and use a normal microusb, and that also allows me to grab my phone while I'm waking up in the morning and unplug it correctly.

Ah, gotya. Yeah, my Streak sits in landscape, with a fat connector, so never realised the difference with the Note and a tiny connection.
And bugger... your port has already been wrecked? So it's a real issue. Bah.
Mmm... not exactly swamped with options that allow for cases though, but don't think I can risk it since I've gotta stick with this baby for 23.75 months yet
That said, this thing does last an entire day, unlike my Streak... so maybe I'll just get a spider-holder or something without charge/usb.
I use the dock daily. I just don't use the built in charger. I turn it on its side and use the regular charger. I think the angle's great.
But this does make me miss the blackberry dock. Blackberry's have metal connectors ONLY for docks that will never mess with any ports . Fantastic idea in my opinion. Oh well. This is a monster of a phone! hehe. Sold my 9900 for it
Awesome.
Thanks for the info, I've gone a head and ordered one.
I guess it'll be safe on my desk, as the odds on knocking it are near zero. As an alarm clock though, I totally get you... I'd wreck it in a single day.
Ah, charging all day at work... I'll probably save a million* in electric bills.
*Ok, maybe $0.01 per month, lol.

Case Containing Batteries

I have seen cases for other phones that contain a second battery to charge the phone's main one? Does this type of accessory exist for the Note?
they do,a lot of them exist on ebay and amazon. I think ecell sold the 3500, probably their other wares are good. I'd check some threads here if I was you. I think there is a review on some of them

I don't want an extravagant battery. Even just a case containing one the same size will do. I want it a case for the actual phone though - not a separate "carry battery" to charge my phone off. The thinner, the better also.

I own the first one in black. It works as advertised and makes the phone feel protected. THe Microusb port on the bottom of the device is a tight fit and faces backwards to the one on the phone. This means you have to pay attention plugging it in so as not to munge the plug. I have two batteries and this case that I take with me when I expect to need to use my device excessively.
I found this one, I am not sure if it is any good or not but I like that it has a kickstand and I like that it looks somewhat like an OEM case.

Right, I ordered this model yesterday
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120972372225?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
It came today.
From what I noticed so far:
- It looks great. Phone fits tightly inside, overall shape is longer and just slightly thicker than a usual protective case.
- Product description mentions some king of a stand. Don't bother about it. It's just a plastic coin-shaped object which you can slide in the hole at the back of the case (you have to keep it in your pocket separately).
- The case can't charge your phone if you're using it. Its output is only 500mA which is not enough for charge and use. The description at the back of the box states 1Amp but the instruction mentions only 500mA. Phone's battery slowly discharges even when the case is on (there is a button at the back to switch it on/off). Of course the overall combined both batteries life should be longer but if you are close to 0% of phone's battery life you are better of switching the phone off, letting the case to charge it and then switching it back on. I'll do some tests tomorrow if it's better to keep the case on from 100% phone's battery life or drain the phone and then switch it off, switch the case on, charge and switch the phone back on. I'll see what gives longer battery life.
- You can charge your phone without taking it out of the case. just be ready for some longer charging times because of those 500mA.
I don't know yet if both phone and case are being charged simultaneously or first phone and then, if the battery reaches 100% the case.
I'll add some photos later on today.
If you have any questions, throw them in.

Flip Cover with Backup Battery for Galaxy Note GT-N7000

Sounds interesting right? yes, its very much true. I bought this type of cover from local market. I must say the cover has a brilliant design. Also, the way in which it functions is simply superb. I am also sharing some snaps of the cover here. Such type of cover really comes handy in case you are travelling and it is not possible to get charging point.

Since my galaxy note is white in colour, I have a white flip cover. The small dots (5 of them) on lower left hand side is for speakers. The 5 bright dots slighly bigger in size at the lower center show the backup battery power level. This case itself contains a backup battery worth 3800 mAh inside.
The circular button on the lower right hand side is for charging the mobile. Press this button for 3 seconds and then it will start charging your mobile's internal battery using the power of the backup battery. If you want to stop charging, again press the button for 3 seconds.
When you use the external charger with wire, it charges mobile's internal battery as well as the backup battery simultaneously. The backup battery is sufficient enough to fully charge your galaxy note's internal battery once. This type of design comes very handy when you are traveling and you don't have any charging point anywhere.
See how Galaxy Note fits in the flip cover. The design is very nice and made keeping in mind the size of the phone. This flip cover acts as a protective case too.
This snap is extremely important. The mobile needs to be carefully placed inside the flip cover. See the silver colour charging pin in black circle. That needs to fit properly in the mobile's charging slot. Don't damage it.
The flip cover also has a stand from back side. This makes video viewing a brilliant experience. Overall, I liked this flip cover a lot and I can definitely suggest you all to buy it. Its really worth !!!
IMPORTANT POINT TO REMEMBER (my observation after use of this cover)-->
================================================================
Whenever the cover battery and phone battery are getting charged simultaneously, the preference is given to cover battery. Cover battery is worth 3800 mAh and Note's internal battery is around 2300mAh so overall charging time goes beyond 5 to 6 hours. Thats why I use this cover in case I am out of house for long time or I am travelling as it is not possible to get charging point. A day before going out, take the phone out of cover and charge the cover. This will be faster.

Probably worked like some cheap Chinese knock off charger and tried to fry his phone. That's the problem with these things - they often do have brilliant design but quality control and cutting corners in production simply sucks. Still, I want one *__*

Review - Dock and Power Battery

So i bought these 2 bad boys during the discount Motorola had on their store and thought it would be nice to share with you guys my thought of them.
Have used them for almost 4 days now and here are my comments:
The Dock
It's the first dock i ever get for a device so it's been a nice experience overall and i do enjoy having my phone there standing up waiting for me to ask something away. The design is pretty cool and to be honest the color set on my Moto X Dev Edition rides just nicely with the color scheme of it so no complains there.

It is a bit pricey for what you get, which basically is the dock, a wall plug and an usb cable (usb to microusb), have to add that the cable and wall plug was kinda crappy, it made this little noise which for what i know of electronics is a capacitor not working properly so i just replaced that with the OEM cable and plug.
The usb mount part gives you movemente freedom up untill 75 degrees aprox, so that's nice.
Now as for the features or the use of it, i move it from my PC to my night stand table and finally i see a use for the daydream function which kinda sucked for me since they released it. Of course i am pretty much lost on which application can benefit of this feature but as for now having the clock itself helps me out alot when i wake up at night to take a piss - you know.
To wrap it up, i like the dock but i still consider it pricey for a regular user so unless you have the money for it - find an alternate solution.
The Battery
You guys know how the Moto X gets a kick ass battery life, well i use my phone like alot, seriously i kill the battery in 6 hours cause i steam music on LTE, keep FB nonstop plus i have my wireless headset running 24/7. With Kit Kat i do have a bigger drain but meh i really don't care much about it since i can always charge it or use the battery.
It takes around 4 hours to charge completely and it has the ability to charge 2 devices at the same time or at least i believe it does since it has 2 output connections.
It also has an additional Micro USB port which is attached to the powerpack itself so if you don't carry cables with you, it is just the perfect companion. And for the 3000 mah capacity i seriously think this one is a no brainer. Again it is an expensive tool but i honestly believe it could save you when you are out of the city, on a trip or simply out of juice.
So far i have charged it twice and used it to charge my phone once, it still had around 50% capacity which is indicated with little LED dots in the front of it, just above the Motorola Logo. One minor detail, the plastic does tend to catch a lot of scratches, you can see them on the final pic.
In conclusion i would suggest you to grab the powerpack if you travel alot or if you just simply use the phone as much as i do.
Again, there are much more cheaper solutions but to be honest i don't trust chinese batteries, had a bad experience with one of them. Kinda blowed up on me so, noty.
Please feel free to ask anything about the dock or battery i will try to answer and provide feedback as needed.
sorry for the language, english ain't my first.

It's a cheap bumper case I got off Amazon, let me know if you want the link.
Agree with you on the battery but i had a $50 coupon i had to use on their store so that plus the discount made me buy those.

Yeah if you don't mind that'd be awesome
And I gotcha. I probably would've done the same

I have a Pebble watch added as a trusted device. Unfortunately, the phone relocks when docked. Major buzzkill of an amazing feature.

The Moto X one? Why/How much?
Are you saying the only reason you got the battery pack was because of the coupon you had? Just curious because I was thinking about getting one of those Anker ones. They seem to do more for the price.
But don't blame you if you basically got that battery pack for free.
On the dock, how much friction is required for insertion / removal of the phone on the USB connector?
