Has the quality of the camera improved with this update?
i've never had a photo quality issue with my nitro, regardless of roms, now refresh speed, diff story, it's improved but other than that the camera takes very high quality pictures as it always has across all roms i've used.

Hello, i bought a new Arc S. I found, that camera produces really low quality pictures. Is there any way to improve compression? I heard, that CM has a improved quality camera.
Thank you
Hello there
Unfortunately, there is currently no option available to improve the crappy quality of the camera output (compression).
Neither CM7 nor MIUI have any significant improvement in this area.
Are you sure you bought an arc because my arc takes good pics but it isn't an arc s but I find this hard to believe maybe your only taking pictures in the dark ?
Check your settings. Some phones have the camera set to poor quality from start.

I've bought an Xperia Arc S too about a month ago, but in my opinion the camera is fantastic! Maybe you have to set the camera in high quality. My camera was also standard at 2 MP 16:9. Now I'm using 6 MP 16:9 and the pictures are great, even in the dark.

Resolution is already set to 8Mpixels.
Which other settings could I check?

I'd recommend 6 MP, because it has a 16:9 instead of a 4:3 format.
Mine works awesome with 8MP...
Could you post a pic made by your cam?

I would also recommend you post the picture you have taken, x10 and arc are best known as their 8M camera, they should be able to take impressive picture compared to all the phone available back then and even able to compete among all phones on the market to date

I don't understand people who say Arc camera is crappy.
It's the best I've ever used in a mobile phone to date.
It can't be compared to my compact camera but it's a phone after all
and the results are more than decent for quick shots.
I don't say my arc is perfect but It's not really that bad in taking picture .
I'm ok with it ...
Using 6MP 16:9,
maybe Your lens is dirty ! clean it if it's needed.
arc is one of the best camera phones out there.if not the best.
Best camera 2011/2012, it won that price

The camera is great - no 2 opinions about that.
But after I downgraded from .62 to .42 with data&system wipe, because of the root, my phone started to take really low quality pics in low light - identical conditions, the same camera settings, but now pics appear with a great level of noise, nomatter how I adjust the settings. On videos also. This is my second time downgrading from 62, the first time without wipe - everything was OK, but now I think smthing must have gone wrong - lots of noise and heavy purple dots...
Any ideas how to fix that, cause I really miss the good low light pics - one of the reasons I bought it.

Maybe some users are expecting a miracle out of arc's camera (e.g. comparing the pictures against DSLRs' large sensor and lens)
Its great for casual shots and videos imo.
It even won an EISA award.
The camera is great, the software is horrible. MIUI and CM7 support to change the jpg compression, which the stock ROM doesn't. The jpg compression sadly ****s up everything and destroys the overall quality of the shots.
I find the quality of the arc's shots to be great, I don't understand why so many people complain. Yes the output file is pretty small for an 8MP resolution photo because its been compressed to ****, but I don't really notice this, even when plugging into my 42" TV it still looks great (until you start to zoom in) Take a range of shots, when shooting in darkness you will find a decent amount of noise but this is just the Exmor-r working wonders - without it, you'd find you'd just have a very dark picture.
Like many people already said, I'm totally happy with the picture's quality of my ARC, especially on 6MP 16:9. I love the colors, the tones, the clarity.. I'm sure that Sony (still SE for me ) will improve a little about JPEG compression in next ICS release..

Exactly. Only my old Nokia N95 comes close, but that also was a little sony carl zeiss optic if i recall correctly.
Arc S camera is crappy.
I know it, because i used a Samsung mobile for a long time before Arc S, to take more than 4K pcs photos, so i can compare them.
It makes a lot of color noise under low light conditions of scenes.
Even a bit better when the light is enough, but then it makes white burned photos
The objective is distorted (fish eye aka barell), and also makes color noises in its corners.
The video record of this mobile is blurred, shaked, in low light condition makes color noises too.
You have to use Noiseware, or similar software to remove unwanted color noises from photos which are dotted by Xperia Arc /s
I don't know what is the meaning of the Exmore r, because i can't find a reason, maybe it' s only a commercial thingy
Sorry for my bad english.
I read in several reviews that the camera quality isn't as good as expected/thought. Is this pure hardware related? Or is it possible that the photo quality can be improved by software updates?

The photos I have been taking have been miles better than my Atrix, Craptivate, or N1 could have. I think a BIG part of the issue is that many users are not comfortable with the instant shutter yet, and are used to the old smartphone camera game of anticipating your shots by pressing the shutter button a second earlier and then settling in for the shot so the timing is right. That is not necessary with this camera, so the image will snap when they are "settling in" or moving to follow the subject and will be blurry. Also, just remember to tap the subject in the screen to focus before you snap the pic. I have noticed much better low-light pics than any of my old devices...
As to the much beleaguered argument over 8MP vs. the ("only") 5MP of the GN's camera, that refers to image capture size, meaning that the 8MP image will be able to be cropped better than the 5MP one- that's it. So if you frame your photo's correctly (how you mean the image to look), it is a non-issue because there is no need to crop (IMO).
Thanks! But, do you think a ROM update can improve photo quality? Or is that impossible?

Not impossible, but any optimizations would be software only, so things like shutter lag, UI of the camera, and filters, etc.
I actually did a blog post on the camera quality. It wasn't scientific in any way, but I came to my own conclusion that any quality issues may be down to agressive ISO and / or JPG Compression and / or Noise reduction.
All of those are fixable in software - but make your own mind up: http://www.thegreenrobotblog.co.uk/2011/11/samsung-galaxy-nexus-camera-sample.html
I'm not 100% sure but after making some more shots I see that the photo quality of the new camera in low light is definitely better in JB compared to ICS.
Nexus' camera in low light in ICS was really terrible but now is not bad at all.
I see the file size of photos has increased as well.
What is your experience?

Haven't noticed the difference. Still looks like crap to me in low light.

I would agree with you. I think the entire camera process has been improved. It seems to focus faster, images seem to be sharper with less effort, and yes low-light looks better.

Hi everyone
I have a request if someone could help me out?
The shutter speed of the One X is 1/2500th of a second; This is really fast, or maybe too fast? Extremely high shutter speeds can negatively impact image quality and decrease the Signal to Noise raito in a picture since it will come out darker. I was wondering if anyone knows a way of decreasing the shutter time to perhaps 1/500th of a second? I'm fairly confident it would get rid of the noise in our One X pictures that remains there even when the ISO is set to 100 and the picture is taken in fairly good lighting. Thank you
The noise is just compression from the stock camera app, try LG camera, has a much better quality and detail to the picture.

interesting point. From my understanding, it is a problem of the very aggressive compression as stated by the fellow above.
Whatever happened to that camera mod that fixed the compression in the camera pictures?
Has anyone ever reviewed or compared the modded camera with the original and the competition(sgs3 and iphone)? I think it would finally do justice to the hox's camera

The shutter speed is NOT fixed on the One X (check the EXIF Data on your photos) and if it was, it certainly wouldn't be 1/2500th... 1/20th of a second would be more realistic.
The shutter speed itself has NO impact on signal to noise ratio. However, an indirect result of a fast shutter is that the 'gain' on the CCD is increased (commonly defined as ISO speed). The greater the gain, the more sensitive the CCD becomes, and thus increases in noise. This is why night time pictures are far noisier than bright daylight ones. ALL of this assumes a fixed aperture lens (which most camera phones are).
The real noise issue is twofold...
1) The lens is small, and although it's F/2. that's F/2 of a lousy size lens.... in essence, it's too small to capture enough light to be a decent camera. This then results in the gain of the CCD being very high and producing noise (a bit like the buzz/hiss of an amplifier turned up to max).
2) The compression using in HTC's JPG storage is quite aggressive, resulting in JPEG noise/artefacts. Whilst not noise from the camera per se, it just makes the images even worse.
ALL digital cameras suffer from noise, but the professional cameras have far better noise reduction, massive CCD's and dedication image processing DSP's that simply leave a humble One-X in its wake. The long and short of this is:
Camera phones for genuine photography are a very bad idea, and until there's some amazing technological breakthrough people are deluding themselves about the quality of image that can be obtained from them. That's not to say you can't get great photos, you can, but the image quality simply isn't there.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1765416&highlight=camera+mod
That fixes the JPEG compression issue, but video recording is still not a perfect 30 fps. Frames are dropped at a rate of about one a second, but it's still a huge improvement over stock.
I think it is possible to set shutter speed of the camera module, but HTC seems to have prioritized sharper shots at the expense of higher sensor noise. It is a reasonable compromise for these situations as it is not easy to hold a phone still for long periods of time. Perhaps HDR mode might be able to help, but that is only for still shots.
There is hardly any or no difference between LgCamera (or any of the camera apps) and the stock app, videos are smoother but pictures are very much the same.

There is, did you change the settings? If you have put them on max quality, then compare pics on a big screen, zoom in on the different areas and you will really notice the improvements especially on the little details of objects

Yep ive changed settings and took many pictures, they all turn out pretty much the same apart from certain focus differences.
Lgcamera and other programs have the same problem. The image appears really "grainy". It's not digital compression but rather the photos turning out like that. This in turn affects image quality. Even images taken in daylight are grainy; take a picture of the sky and you'll see what I mean. Zoom in a little and you see it. My Sensation XE had a better camera than my One X, mainly as the noise was practically non-existant and images came out very detailed. It seems BSI sensors perhaps generate more noise? Or it could be that heat can result in increased digital noise; ISO increasing results in more current to the sensor to pick up more light but the heat generated as a result produces noise. Since the One X heats up around the Camera area, it could be possible that the Tegra 3 chips are located there, providing constant heat that also unintentionally hesting up the sensor and resulting in increased noise levels in images?
If either if you are rooted, you should really install the HQ Camera mod. It modifies the settings of the stock app, and you can easily get 4MB pics with really good sharpness and colour. High ISO noise is less too. Really works wonders, and I'm really really really picky about my photos (retired portrait photographer)
Hi,
I have/had many Smartphones apart from the P930. Somehow the picture quality of the P930 is the worst. Both picture and video capturing. Is this normal or some problem with my P930?
Cheers,
sb
As i know the camera module was produced by sony and it has good quality. Quality depends from which rom are you using. My point of view is that camera on stock rom (2,3; 4.0; and miui v4) is much better than on custom (i mean CM and Other)
the pictures from the rom in my sig are great, it's based off stock ics but custom kernel etc
warning you need to be unbricked and rooted etc, which isn't easy if you are new at moding phones
I tested all ROMs, also Mattman's and the Stock ROMs. The picture quality is quite bad in my opinion. Also the autofocus is not very good. Do you think this is a bug in my smartphone?
Mine is actually quite nice. In fact, I've submitted a few pictures to a couple contests and placed.

How is your autofocus?
Can you post the samples?
I've got 'prosumer' level photography equipment, so my opinions are jaded. That said, when I first got my Nitro I HATED the camera! It was extremely slow to take a picture and the amount of time it took between taking 1 picture until it could take another seemed like FOREVER. Blur, subpar color rendition...So yeah, I wasn't happy with the camera.
But since putting CM10.1 on, the camera software is LEAPS and BOUNDS better. Shooting speed is MUCH faster, the time between shots is MUCH shorter. The color rendition is much better, the auto-focus works better (click on area to focus)...Even in lower light conditions I get decent shots now. I can easily and wholeheartedly recommend using the CM10.1 camera vs. stock (Well, Stock OS when it first came out, ICS Stock might be worlds better too).
...All of this is at 1.0x zoom. Start using the digital zoom and all bets are off. Grain and blur run rampant the more you zoom.
