Sometimes I wish sprint didnt suck. My data speeds here in Lincoln are absolutely terrible, and I get horrible coverege most where I go, even in my own house. Sprint should really get their stuff together if you ask me.
Looking forward to LTE here though, maybe that'll change things because its been like this for as long as I can remember.

LTE is expected by early 2013 but rumors floating around that it may arrive late 2012...hopefully the latter is true
Sent from my SPH-L710
All these are just bandaid fixes until they deploy Network Vision, so just an FYI that these have nothing to do with Network Vision at all.
Data speed upgrades are extra T1's for backhaul (yes, they are actually ordering additional T1's until Network Vision is deployed)
Voice upgrades are additional voice carriers
Data capacity upgrades are extra 3g data carriers
Everyone should understand that the sites listed and mapped on this sprint.com page are ongoing maintenance fixes and upgrades, which are proceeding on one track. But these improvements, sometimes called "band aid" fixes, will be eclipsed by Sprint's Network Vision project, which is going on concurrently and is scheduled to run into early 2014.
The NV project, which is mostly visible right now because it includes the LTE rollout in some areas, will refit almost every single Sprint tower. This huge project is not mapped at sprint.com. If you want to track those big-picture rollouts, go to S4GRU.com

I really have to ask....how is your data connection?
Mine works great on WiFi....so great. However, using AT&T's 3G network.....is horribly slow for me. At times, I can't really do anything at all.
I live in a major city (Vegas), and the area's I generally find myself in usually have a perfect signal....so its either the network itself....or the phone, that's at fault here. With the time I have spent customizing it, I am really hoping it's not the phone lol. I want to make sure this isn't me having this issue.
How is AT&T's data connection for everyone else?
Update: Through tethering the phone to a laptop and using the laptop to access speedtest.net, I got:

I agree that the ATT 3G speed has been very disappointing for me, in fact, even though I am showing a 3G connection, I get speeds of 600k to 800k only doing speed tests.
I'm out in West Los Angeles, which is an area pretty well served by ATT I'd imagine.
I had the issue with Fuze in Vegas. Perfect signal with H but no data flowing (sometimes it worked but mostly not). In all cases, switch to edge helped, so it must be an issue with AT&T hardware in Vegas. Do you connect via MediaNet? I though that may be using different wap access point would help (isp something instead of wap). But that would require more expensive plan, of course.
slow data connection
Ok, had to jump in to this "support group" I was a Tilt user who had to switch to iphone 3G after tilt was stolen (Fuze screen too small). Waited patiently for Tilt 2 all the while badmouthing the appletards who swore by the iphone. Got my Tilt 2 yesterday and realized my iphone screen and internet connection was much more responsive and reliable. WTF? I don't remember the tilt not connecting. Int the Tilt 2 opera freezes if I have both the 3g and wifi data streams running. I have had to turn off one or the other to get any data in opera, but it is still slow as molasses compared to the iphone. Anyone else having these issues. i hope its an opera/bloatware issue fixable with a cooked ROM. Waiting to see what happens when the cooks get some time with the tilt 2 before I take the plunge, but also considering going back to an iphone and getting the newer 3gs while I wait for the Leo.

I cant complain about my data speeds I get between 1.6 to 1.9 megabytes sec in north carolina.

Lucky you! I am really starting to think its my phone...
I live in the DC area and my Tilt 2 compared my Iphone 3gs is painfully slow. This is def. an issue of device priority.
I'm having this same problem. What's going on? My Bberry Bold was very fast.. and now both Opera AND IE on my Tilt 2 is slow.
I hope someone fixes this.
My Fuze was faster than my Tilt 2. I notice as the progress bar moves, it appears to just lag for quite a while about a quarter of the way along.
My guess is there's something up with the Tilt 2.
Is there a reason why? Will this be fixed as time goes by AT&T? Or are we stuck with an expensive, slow internet phone?

I would think so. I am sure if they didn't plan on fixing it and fast that they might have a class-action suit against them....for blocking access to something your paying for. It isn't just an expensive phone, but your being forced to pay monthly for a high-speed unlimited connection your not even getting...not cool.
Then again, look how long it took for a class-action to spring up for the no-MMS capability issues in the past with the iphone. They put it on the back burner until a year or so later when they finally decided to threaten suite against them.
Observations
While I was configuring the stock rom through one of the handy configuration editors found around the net, I've noticed 2 things:
1) The E(dge) icon is disabled, meaning that it will always show you as being on 3G, even if you are on a 2G(G) or 2.5G(E) Network
2) HSUPA support is disabled... Now this is not the HSDPA icon (which changes 3G into H), but the acutal HSUPA support (which AT&T may or may not support).
These are listed under the Data Connection area in version 3.3.3.0 of Julien Schapman's Advanced Configuration Tool...
I don't know that these will help in any way, but figured I'd bring it to the attention of the masses...
Well, after doing some additional testing and what not, I'm now consistently getting speed rests of 850k to 1.1M or so.
Its no HSUPA (which I have enabled), but is good enough to stream youtube and what not without issue.
I have Advanced Configuration Tools installed and did enable both edge icon and enabled HSUPA support but my speed hasn't changed
For some reason when doing speed test it shows up as fast, but actually time seems really slow. Is this due to the proxy that at&t uses?

I'm getting mixed results from this, actually. Sometimes it works pretty well. Sometimes it doesn't even load the web page I'm going to.
Is this the phones problem or a network thing?
Are there any steps I can take to make it work more consistently?
Everything seemed much quicker to me after I disabled AT&T's proxy. Of course, you can't access things like AppCenter or http://device.home/ but I never use those anyway. On the AT&T ROM there is a shortcut to disable the proxy in Start/Tools/Proxy Manager. However I found that this only works for IE. To disable it in Opera also, I had to edit \Windows\Opera\opera.ini and set the Use HTTP and Use HTTPS proxy settings to 0, then soft reset. You can change the settings in opera:config but for me they didn't stick unless I edited the ini file directly.
I switched back and forth between the stock AT&T radio and the HTC radio.... HTC radio is DEFINITELY working better for me.
Speed test results from stock ATT radio rom: 400k to 600k, I did 3 tests, all were in that range.
Speed test results from HTC radio rom: 750k to 1.1M... I did 4 tests, all were in that range.
I did them all from the same exact spot... my office at work, all within 2 hours of one another.
I also am getting 1-2 more sat's in GPS (google maps, getting 8-10 sats) using the HTC radio
Has anyone else noticed just how much slower sprint is lately? I mean, we all knew that they've began having major issues last year, but now, seems worse. I literally can't get above .15mbps on any of my three phones. That's in most of the Denver/Aurora area. Before it was slow, now it is just not usable.
The only excuse Sprint ever has is the network vision, but really? I'm pretty fed up with this dial up.
I'll atop ranting now, am still under contract with them .

Damn, I know in Atlanta it is rather bad as well.
Just hard to remain optimistic, specially knowing that the unlimited model, while nice, isn't going to help with speed. Just too many people can abuse the already suffering network. While limits suck, they really force people to watch their data use, or pay for higher usage.

I checked out tmobile prepaid, and prepaid just makes more sense seems like. Yea, you pay full retail price if you want a nice phone, but you don't need to pay any hidden upgrade fees, or weird surcharges sprint has, nor is it as expensive. And I can't speak for everyone, but I honestly don't see network vision doing anything but allowing sprint catch up to the point where most others are already at, except for years later. And if they keep this unlimited model going, I only see the network continuing on suffering. Sure, Lte would be nice and the fact that all new high end sprint phones are lte capable. Unless you're in major 6 markets though, yore stuck on crawling 3g till at least 2014, that's when they plan to roll out lte here in Colorado, not to mention it will only be the initial roll out, only among major highways, even spottier than wimax.

The thing I've noticed about CD a devices is that they don't drop calls nearly as often as GSM models do. I've noticed this with several devices amongst my family. I'm not saying cdma is immune to it, just that they tend to transfer from tower to tower better.
With that in mind, I'd probably go to Verizon if I switched... but I can't stand the amount of things they will charge you for. They charge to block numbers, GPS, etc. T-Mobile sounds ideal as far as pricing goes but if GSM drops calls often then I'm not too sure.
A few months ago i was on cricket with the og epic, i was tired of they crappy service so i was looking to switch. Sprint grabbed me with their truly unlimited data. Guess i should of researched speeds as well =/ but i have hopes for sprint, im stuck with them for 2 years and network vision should (hopefully) hit buffalo ny by then. if i dont get a significant increase in data quality i will most defiantly go with verizon. They may be a bit more expensive but hey, the phrase "you get what you pay for" may apply here

Really?! I prefer GSM over CDMA any day. Unless, we are talking about CDMA-Advanced. My reasoning is the whole data speed aspect. With GSM, your 3G speeds are much better due to HSPA and HSPA+ technology. On Sprint, have you ever seen speeds over 2.5mbps in an excellent coverage area with no network load? The max CDMA network that Sprint has can go is 3.2, which is theoretical. TMobile HSPA+21 network can reach 10-12mbps without many issues. HSPA+42, 19-25 in my area during off hours. Verizon CDMA, while much more consistent, isn't much faster than Sprint.
I understand your argument with dropped calls, but I actually have found the opposite to be true. I have less dropped calls while on the go on my T-Mo company phone (GNexus), vs any of the Sprint devices I have. And that is among same area. I am guessing our experiences differ due to coverage in respectable states.
Sprint was good here for a week or less when NV was apparently being worked on in my area.. now it is even worse than before! I'm not sure what they did to the nearest towers but everyone I know around complains lately that their signal inside their house is worse and not as reliable. I've been considering jumping ships to a different carrier, perhaps the T-Mobile prepaid plan... considering I only use like 40 mins a month and only need dependable fast data on the good. Sprint better hope LTE and NV starts working here in the L.A area

I used to hit around 1 Meg in the morning. From this speed it drops into nearly single digits throughout the day.
My 3g speeds have gotten cut in half in San Diego this month. I don't even know what its like using the 4G option on this phone which leaves me a little bitter at this point. In fact, listening to others talk about 4G in their areas feels like a series of short stories, wise tales, and mere fables. I'm probably gonna switch to T-mobile once the GS3 drops next month since they are finally getting a decent phone line up. I'm getting tired of the emasculating feeling of begging my girlfriend for data as she hits the WIFI tether Icon of her Verizon unlimited droid all the while knowing that the 4G option in my notification bar is simply a useless battery draining light.
Ans I thought I had it bad lol. The funny thing is that I can take my tmobile phone ans my sprint phone to the sprint store ans tmo would test at least 2x faster vs sprint on wimax, that's with full bars since they have signal boosters at their stores.

Sprint is becoming a victim of the iPhone own success the way AT&T did when the iPhone first came out. Sprint went from being 4th place in the networks to 1st almost overnight due to having unlimited data and high quality phones. Unfortunately they weren't prepared for it network wise.
I keep getting emails about them building/buying/renting new towers here in Los Angeles, but thus far I haven't seen any quality updates.
My recommendation is to call and complain. Most of the time they'll give you an Airrave for free to keep you as a customer.

I think that sprint lineup is far from being the first.
A lot of people buy in the whole unlimited data thing, that's just how Americans are. Why have limits when you can have unlimited? Those people don't think about speeds, they think that all data is same lol. Sadly, they also usually don't even get close to 2gb, which is the lowest tier cap by competitors.
Yay, I have unlimited. What is it good for when everything takes ages to do? Videos aren't even worth the effort over sprint mobile data. Having a tmo ans a sprint phone side by side, I can buffer a YouTube in 720p on tmo and watch 2 minutes of video before sprint would load same video in sq.

I can say that the 3G 100% better on the S3 than my OG Epic. It is also now 10x faster and 33% lower latency since Sprint either upgraded or fixed the tower(s) covering downtown Denver, CO.
Which is really good since I don't expect to see LTE for another 18-24 months!
Well try that thanks. Will upload some speeds when I get a chance later.

3g has degraded for me. At work I use to get about 1.5mpbs. Now I'm lucky to get .7mbps. I avg about .4mbps. This may have something to do with iphones sharing the same 3g. I really miss wimax as I used to get it almost everywhere I go. I live in the bay area.

Funnily enough, slower for me here in Long Island. I'm lucky to pull over 512k down and up here in my office. I was often getting higher then 1mbit but it's sprint so there was always fluctuation.
I never really had any complaints with Sprint speeds on 3G but after playing with this phone on my office wifi for most of today - I wish LTE was around already, this hardware really deserves better speeds.
it depends on what tower I'm connected to. at home (South Philadelphia, pa), it's nice and zippy. at work (Port Richmond, Philadelphia, pa) it's awful, but that seems to be the trend near my job. Verizon was almost as bad, everyone on t-mo and metro have issues, and at&t is terrible, as well. i don't know what the problem is, Sprint even has a dedicated tower only a block from my job.

I'm actually getting better speeds on my s3 than any other sprint phone EVER. I consistently get over 1mbps where on my iPhone and gs2(on 3g) I would never even get over 600kbps. It makes not having wimax or lte that bad
I am assuming it has to be Sprint because my wife just bought Evo 4G LTE and having the same problem .
I am just an old fashioned country doctor Jim.
As a reader of several forums, it is apparent to me that there is a pattern of such anomalies being reported by some end users of Sprint's LTE-capable phones in some areas. Remember that these new devices right now are connecting to the legacy EVDO and 3G network, which is in the process of being replaced completely on a localized basis in Sprint's Network Vision rollout.
Because these anecdotal reports are sporadic, and seem to affect more than one LTE device design, while most users report no such problems, I suspect that something is going on with the interaction of these devices with the under-construction network locally. Hopefully this is temporary. The phones are supposed to work fine with the legacy network, and with the under-construction changeover, but I suspect there are some issues.
Sprint has not owned up to any such problems. So we just don't know for sure. Personally, if I were one of those affected, I would not accept a two-year contract beyond the 14-day trial without concrete commitments from Sprint to fix this.

I wish I could get 3g speeds like that from Sprint, and that is why I am switching to Verizon.
Below are the screenshots of 3g speedtest.
Sprint on the left, Verizon on the right.
It is highly variable on location.I was driving home in traffic through Staten Island and the speeds varied from 2 mb down to .4 mb down and 1 mb up to a low of .2 up. Tried it at four locations. The worst is by far my home in Jersey, .4 down, .2 up. Thank God for Wi-Fi.
I am just an old fashioned country doctor Jim.
I got an EVO 4G LTE and returned it after 4 days. My wife got one at the same time. The MAX download speed I ever got was like 300k. Averaged about 50k.
My S3 on ATT LTE gets 20mbps.

Network vision upgrades are helping to disrupt service. Its all over the net, and in Sprint forums. I was able to attain 1.92 down and 1.1mb up on 3g in certain areas of the Bronx, NY, and Jamaica Queens in the last 30 days!

I beat that speed on 3g with my Sprint GS III in the Bronx, and my Photon in Jamaica queens NYC. To all of the people that switched to Verizon at a time when Network Vision is rearing it's head is a shame. Their lack of investigating the issues will cause them to pay more for the next 2 years while people like me will save lots and have unlimited data.

Hey, I just moved to US and bought a T-mobile Galaxy S III with Unlimited 4G.
I rooted the phone and used the APN trick (From WarlockW)
Everything went fine, and I was using the User Agent on Google Chrome (As a Android browser)
The speed was like 5-15 mbps , and now it is like 0.02-0.1 mbps. I know that I used alot of data (something around 14,5gb I guess)
The 4G signal is quite good, and still the same at it was when I got 5-15mbps
Does anybody else have this problem, and what should I do?
Thanks guys, looking forward to some feedbacks
I, too, have been getting "throttled" 4G speeds as of late.
I'm a heavy user (~20-40GB/mo), and I see my 4G get "throttled speed" where my 4G icon shows FULL 1/2 of the month.

A few hours ago signed my life away with T-Mo for two S3's, Are you saying 4G icon and your speeds are full speed for 1/2 the month?
Curious on you on a tethered plan or the new unlimited?

Im on TMO's new unlimited (no data cap) 4G plan. I switched over to TMO the month before they announced their new unlimited 4G. So to say, I was VERY excited.
The first month was fine (september). october, was a little sketchy. for a good week, my data dropped in speed significantly. This month, worst. I can't seem to stay on 4G speeds. Maybe its the rain in my area? Or the influx of new customers jumping into the unlimited plan overloading TMO's traffic? Who knows....
Im close to calling in and asking them why my data is so freakishly slow for the past 2 weeks now...
Definitely call them and complain. And tell them to reset it for you.

I was having the same problem so I called Tmobile. They checked for tickets in my area and within a 10 mile radius, they informed me of the network modernization happening in my area. Go to airportal.de and see if they was any 1900mhz HSPA discovered in your area.
Add me to the list of getting "throttled" watching YouTube on my phone and ran a speed test right before, 220kB/s which is awesome for I don't get 4g here. After about an hour of YouTube it started to buffer like every minute. Ran a speed test and only got 90kB/s and it had to have been me getting throttled. It's happened before and I called and complained they fixed it but now it's starting again. I'm getting really annoyed.

Correct, Tmo offers different plans the tether plan does NOT offer truly unlimited 4G speeds and vice versa if I'm not mistaken: D

I would say lately, I have been using my 4G less since it's getting colder outside, and I'm indoors with wifi. I haven't gotten throttled lately, but I feel that the network has been slower than my normal speeds too. I can't compare to what I had before since I didn't think to save a screenshot from before, but I wonder if having too many people using the service simultaneously also is dropping the speeds.

Hey guys, thought I'd give my input. I'm at 15GB usage this month, both my gf and I are getting 15mbps (par for the course around here).
Maybe they're just temporary dips in service?

I wish they were temporarily dips in service. But I haven't been getting anything CLOSE to 15mbps this month. Just ran a test just now and I got 0.09Mbps. This test was ran after I called customer service and them explaining why:
"Due to your location, it is best to be outside for better data service." [But I have full 4G bars inside the house. I never experienced this for the first month with you guys in my house.] "Im sorry to hear that sir, but like I said, due to the frequencies the towers are giving and the combination of your location being indoors, it is best to be outside for better service." [So to say, I should put my bed OUTSIDE while I browse my data hogging phone?] "I'll fill in a ticket for an engineer to contact you."
Total bee es.
Call and immediately ask to speak to a supervisor, tell them you have full signal but the actual speed is crap and it's not "faster and more dependable" as they claim and ask for a credit on your account for the month. This method landed me $20 off my bill. Good luck!

This is also what happened in my area. They don't throttle the truly unlimited.
For the ones getting throttled do you guys have the true unlimited 30 buck plan?
Also keep in mind during the day and rush hour periods, data will be slow because everyone is getting off work/school
they cannot legally throttle you if they are claiming it and advertising it to be unthrottled, class action law suits up the *** ...... furthermore, it is all coincidence, all of it. if you are on the unlimited 4g, your 4g is exactly that, unlimited, and unthrottled.
i burned through 80 GB of 20 MB/s data last month..... yes, 80......
so yeah, case clossssed

+1, see what plans you have. I just got the cheapest family plan they had which has 2gb of full speed 4g and after that unlimited edge/gprs speed. I really dont need unlimited 4g cause i have wifi at home and at work.

As a former 10 year sprint customer, I move to Verizon 2 years ago and got much better service and data speeds. However, sprint has a half price promotion for verizon customers and I am considering coming back to sprint.
Has sprint improved any the last 2 years and what speeds are you getting on your note 4. On Verizon in Lubbock Tx I get 16 down and 5 up on data.

You take your last bill from verizon or att and they give you the same service for half price. You have to turn in a Verizon phone.
Look on sprints web site and it gives all the details. Starts Friday.
In lubbock sprint is 1.5 up and down on what they call 4g. Not very good

Well since AT&T nor Verizon offer unlimited (data) plans...the deal probably won't be for unlimited plans. Right? You would most likely pay the same as a current subscriber for unlimited.
If you are in a Spark market and connected to a band 41 (2500 mhz) tower you can get over 40mb downloads. On the other lte bands typical download speeds are between 5 and 10 mb. That is assuming the market is fully launched. Those are the speeds I get in Denver.

First thing to do is do some homework and see what LTE/Spark services are like in your area where you will be using your phone most. I can say one thing for sure, and that is that Sprint has been doing a lot of upgrades lately and has done a lot since you left two years ago. Service is great in some places and so so in others. For example I live on the edge of tower range and I barely get decent data connection in my house BUT it does work well when i'm in the corner room of my house that's closest to that tower. I get pretty good data speeds and I have a metal roof!!!
Second thing to take into consideration is which is most important to you right now... price/value or known good service with a higher price tag and not unlimited. It's your decision. just do a little research on Sprint coverage in your area and make a choice. I feel like Sprint will stop offering unlimited data for smartphones soon. I'm not getting rid of my unlimited service/plan because from what I've seen and experienced with Sprint since 2008 is night and day difference. Last thing you need to take into account is the new Sprint Spark devices in favor of a regular LTE non Spark device. The data service will be better for a Spark device. So when getting opinions and testimonies and Speed tests from users, find out which device they have along with their location. Good luck.
Yes, 1/2 off on new members from Verizon or AT&T. All you have to do is take in your phone bill to the nearest Sprint dealer. Sprint has there new TDD-LTE with current download speeds at 60mbps. The same network tested in China and Japan at 150+ mbps. However, the new TDD-LTE network is now in the top 100 markets within the USA. But, I'm not sure if it's in your area yet. However, if you go here: s4gru(dot)com you will be able to determine if the TDD is within area.
But the way Sprint is going, I foresee them setting up a partnership with China mobile and the Network in Japan. This way they might have free roaming within those areas because those networks use a TDD Advanced chip set. Also the thing you might want to think about is the price per share with the top telecoms. Verizon price per share is around $45 and AT&T's price per share is around $35 give or take a dime. If Sprint current price per share is around $4.75 is putting in superior network, odds are really good that Sprint's price per share will go up to at least $25 to $30 in line with the others. But that's just my humble opinion.

Thanks for the info but I disagree on Sprint being a $30 stock anytime soon. They made a very stupid purchase of nextel and the wimax rollout was a disaster. They cannot get long term customers because service and phone access to data and voice is worse than ATT and Verizon. No customers, no upgrade money available. Maybe since the Japanese became investors they can survive. I left them 2 years ago after 10+ years of sub par but cheap service. The new plan would save me $75 per month but I am still not sure it is worth it.
Test done just now...
I'm going to the Sprint store tomorrow with my AT&T bill and see what they can do for me. Currently I'm with AT&T and have 2 phones in my plan. I've got an unlimited data plan with my phone and my wife has a 2gb plan with her phone. My contract is up so I can go with any carrier I want. The Sprint coverage looks good both at my job location and at home. I'm sure I've have some issues when I take trips up to Vermont.
However, this deal does seem a little too good to be true. Currently I'm paying around $155 for both phones a month. If they can beat that then I'll go with Sprint.

Not saying Sprint is a pos... But you may be disappointed if you get rid of your unlimited att.
Sprint is good in certain markets. I'm in nyc and for the most part it's ok. The other carriers have faster data speeds. I've been with Sprint for almost 10 years and I can say it's been a good ride.
