Help me understand flashing to stock - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Okay I sold my phone, but the person wants nothing to do with Root or Custom Roms, so I have to return this phone to stock Sprint Settings. From what I gathered, I will be flashing Shipped Rom S: D710.0.5S.EG30 Gingerbread 2.3.4 because Official OTA S: D710.0.5S.EL29 Gingerbread 2.3.6 is Rooted from Here. I suppose I can use the Stock Shipped Rom and then let it update OTA. See if you can help me out too, I forgot the ## codes to Reset data and disactivate device and make it ready for new activation. Thanks

Cant help you with the codes but you shold be flashing the stock FF18 or EL29 for gingerbread. Used sfhubs one click package to flash either. Then use the auto-root package to return to stock.

Just download the Odin one click el29 stock and then apply the ics ota update. Completely stock.

Thanks! I got it, so install Official OTA S: D710.0.5S.EL29 Gingerbread 2.3.6 even though its rooted, then unroot with auto root package. Funny how you know these things, but when it matters, you completely forget about the procedures.

Will flashing CWM recovery affect getting an OTA?

My understanding is that recovery stays in a separate partition and whatever you do to it does not affect getting an OTA, is that right?
Also, what if my phone is rooted using the Zerg exploit or whatever method, can I still get an OTA?
So basically I think my questions is, what ultimately decides whether my phone can get an OTA, or not?
if you are on stock ROM, you will get it just fine
but you might loose ROOT after it finish the upgrade
if you are on Custom ROM, you wont get OTA
You can get the ota even on a custom ROM. As long as you have the stock recovery.

How would you have a custom ROM with stock recovery? I've never rooted a Samsung phone since this is my first and I'm waiting to root it, so unless Samsung is different I don't see how.

I'm sure within a couple days there will be a custom rom with the new features. that's an assumption but its always been like that on other phones I have had. Hopefully that's the case with this phone also.
I have stock rooted ROM with CWM recovery, is that okay? Or do I have to have a stock recovery?

you will get the notification for the ota, your phone will download it but when it boots into recovery to flash it and its not the stock recovery, it will just give an error and you will probably have to pull the battery to reboot. i did this on the nexus s. if i remember right i never got the ota notififcation again either after it failed.
I know there are methods out there that can flash the entire phone back to stock (kernel, ROM, recovery) but that involves wiping everything. Is there a way to flash back the stock recovery only since I'm already on stock ROM and kernel?
Big thanks...
I wonder where it puts the update after it downloads it. Would be nice to grab it and maybe install without reverting to stock...

It goes to data/cache if I remember right. And there will be rooted roms posted within hours of the ota so its really nothing to even worry about

There is a stock recovery posted in the dev section you can flash in Odin

Found that and it works. Thanks!
you can keep your phone more up to date by flashing roms as opposed to waiting for an OTA. galaxy s4g is still stuck on froyo. Epic 4g just got gingerbread.

What is the update supposed to do or fix?

Update is launching today!

The latest update for the Epic Touch is launching today(12/7). Some people are already getting the OTA.
The first member who gets the update please post it
Thanks
That's the best news I've heard since earlier....(facepalm)
The bummer is we already have it so until there's a .tar we will still have the modem issue

So if you are on a custom ROM, will the update push / prompt? Or do you have to go back to stock?
Does it matter if the custom ROM is EG30 or EK02 based?

Question: I'm rooted and on Calkulin's Rom. Should I accept OTA update when I receive it?
Does this Unroot or brick my phone?
Will I still get the update even if I did the qbking manual update? 100% stock not rooted.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I think the bottom line is, if you have anything but stock EG30 on your phone (ROM, kernel and modem) the update will download but the install will fail. I doubt it will brick your phone as the update probably does version checks before it starts the install process.
Same goes for people with the EG31 modem. You folks will have to wait for a TAR leak.

theres no proof of that eg31 was provided by a sprint tester so that would mean his phone wouldnt take the ota either? we will just have to wait and see! but you do have to be on a stock not rooted phone and currently the only way to get back to completely stocl is with the eg31 tar
So im guessing a factory restore odin of eg30 is in order.

Updating to official ICS from custom ICS

Okay, so I've searched and searched, but it's difficult to put into words my question:
I have a rooted Epic 4g touch running Calkulin's E4GT ICS rom v1.5 and Android Version 4.0.3. I don't use the root that much anymore, and the official Ice Cream Sandwich update is gonna be rolled out soon. Is it possible for me to update to the official Ice Cream Sandwich OTA update or do I have to unroot and do some other things before I can do that?
If worst comes to worst, I'll just stick with it being rooted. I just don't want to lose everything just to update to the official rom.
Thanks!
EL29 or no OTA update

The simple answer is, don't take the OTA but rather wait a day or so until one of the Devs have it rooted and ready to flash.

Simpler answer IMO: Download sfhub's FF18 Odin OC and apply, unless you're waiting for a debloated version to be done. (I believe these are even already available...)

That makes sense to do it that way. Just wondering though. Do you know what would happen if someone tried to do an OTA update in this kind of way? Where you are going from unofficial to official?

I believe if you're on anything other than stock EL29 the OTA would simply failed when you tried to apply it. Nothing major just a minor inconvenience.
I'm running sfhub's rooted FF18. Is there any benefit to flashing back to EL29 and then taking the OTA or will it be identical?

No one knows for sure if there are any differences between the leaked FF18 and OTA. Just stay where you are and wait for people to get OTA so then you can decide if there are any changes you wanna odin back to El29 or not.
But can you still have EL29 stock but with root and still get the Stock FF18 update?

That's what I thought, some guy on the sprint Facebook page showed a link to all the updates and it said fc09 at the top. So either sprint misprinted or this guy had the wrong phone all together. The build below it was el29 though? I'm going to go look at it again.

? Just being rooted will not stop the update. In fact most paths will let you take the update and brick your phone if you actually did things like removing system apps. Luckily thats usually a soft brick.
Are you on EL29, some other Gingerbread, one of the 4.0.3/4.0.4 leaks or FF18? There hasnt been a "New OTA" in a month. If your not on FF18 and you want FF18 just odin it.
Fh13 update possibly or just sending out ff18 again.? Hmmmm

it's FF18 update and im on el29. I read more about it and mentioned that adobe flash will not work on ICS build and seen battery drainage from users who updated their phones. I guess I'll wait till the patches roll out if needed. Also can't flash with clockwork recovery installed. It has to be stock recovery.

LOL Flash works fine on ICS, are you sure you were not reading about Jelly Bean? Which still works in just no new installs allowed.
Besides as of today Adobe is supposed to have pulled Flash for ALL phones on all android versions that dont already have it installed
http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/14/psa-adobe-halts-new-installs-of-flash-on-android-as-of-tomorrow/
You can flash FF18 OTA, in clockworkmod, or flash the tar in odin that we had 3 weeks prior to the OTA. I flashed a tar/one click earlier for testing and someone else flashed a zip for it in clockwork mod using a safe recovery.
Taking the OTA means you loose root anyways, not sure why people think they want the OTA. With no root exploit youd have to flash an prerooted one in odin.
I tried to flash it with the original update and looked like it was going to update but after the animation showing as a box with a arrow unpacking the update it threw me into the Android with the exclamation screen. Had to battery pull and safe to say that my phone is safe and not bricked.

Well once again its going to rape you of root and the only way to get root is the same way to get rooted FF18 from where you are. Mind you the update to FF18 is not without its issues. Swype for example you have to delete its data for it to work again. Best bet is to backup your stuff and wipe it.

Run.. your phone may explode at any moment.
Worse case you will have to re root the phone. Not a biggy tho.. Rooting this thing is exceptionally easy.

That's your JB OTA. You can accept and it will install (if you have a stock recovery), or fail (if a custom recovery). If on stock recovery, you will loose root, but can just root again. If on custom recovery, nothing will happen, but you'll continue to receive the notification until you either have a build.prop that matches the latest base, or flash a ROM based on the latest base. Which is my recommendation. Browse the options available in the Android Development thread, choose one of the LJ7 ROMs, flash, and be happy!
ROM - Odexed Blue JB "Holy Grail" LJ7
Baseband - LJ7
Kernel - Stock LJ7
